The old farmer dude I work for part-time oils the chains at the end of the day. He claims it's better to oil them when the chains are warmed up; says the oil can get into the gaps better.
He has an old contraption that is a pressure tank on wheels with a short hose and nozzle. We dump used oil into it, put the bung in tight enough so it's sealed, and then pressurize it with compressed air. Works great. If we remember to close the valve to the hose, it will usually hold enough pressure to last for two oilings.

Nice... gotta love it when a plan comes together. Also nice when you're lucky enough to have breakdowns that turn out to not be so bad, like the tire in the driveway or that chain We have plenty of breakdowns that turn out the other way, for sure... good things work in our favor once in awhile...

I have to say at first I thought you were crazy for abandoning that JD picker for that NI uni. But now I think your a genius and I am so jealous. 4 rows at a time and pick anywhere in the field.👍👍

First to watch, good morning Boehm farm fans. Yeah those 426 motors are cold blooded, we got those in our Allis 7060s, I took the head off the one 7060 and had it worked on along with the injectors, made it start a lot better.

I didn't like having to get so close to the chains on my New Idea picker so I started using a siphon blow gun with the air compressor. Hell of a lot cheaper than chain lube in a can.

Some of my manual say used used motor oil and then there’s the chain lube and the spray on chain lube never got a good answer from engineers or mechanics on what’s the best to use? It seems like opinion always wonder how they advise you from the factory on how to oil chains, like I know you’re not supposed to do it according to them when the tractor is turning everything but I don’t know how else you do it?

well chainsaw bar oil has a thickener to make the oil sticky so it stays on the chain and doesn't get slung off so easily. not all bar oils are made the same, best stuff is the Stihl bar and chain lube. Stihl makes the best 2 cycle oil as well for the engine- doesn't smoke as much or foul the plug anywhere near as much as the cheap stuff...
Used motor oil works well for chain lube, particularly where it's gonna get slung off anyway... it's cheap and a good way to use it up. For tight or rusty chains old automatic transmission fluid works well... thinner so it gets in there easier and seeps into tight links. Slings off easier though.
If a chain is subject to a lot of dirt and grit, dry lube isn't a bad idea... oil draws dirt and filth like a magnet and can cause chains to wear MORE if they're getting really dirty and dirt is working down into the links, pins, and rollers... dry lube puts some graphite (or other dry lubricating compounds) in there to provide lubrication without drawing excess dust and dirt...
Chain lube in a can is meh-- lot of expense, not much oomf... every one I've seen is a poor grade of lubricant in a thin carrier to make it sprayable... (other than dry lube). Seems like the stuff just disappears within a couple minutes of applying it.

Yes, you can use used oil for bar oil and it is cheaper. However, you will need to replace the bar and chains more often because used oil will sling off as opposed to the "clingy, sticky" bar oil that won't so much. May cost you more in the long run.

@@boehmfarm4276 Looks like you're getting a lot of stalk and leaves coming through the head... what do you stalk rollers look like?? Worn out I bet. Might consider new stalk rollers or at least running some weld beads along the ridges with a 6013 rod to build them up so they're more aggressive... the more leaves and stalks you spit out the bottom of the head the less that the husking bed and cleaning system will have to deal with... just sayin!
