For cheap transportation, this car is fantastic! Glad to see that there is a car on the market that doesn't punish you for purchasing down market. Most people commenting on this video do not realize that from a value perspective, this car is a steal. All other direct competitors (at least new cars) come with a lot of compromises, from standard equipment to bad seats to horrible driving dynamics. The iA (Mazda 2) is a perfect blend of driving enjoyment and frugality. I can also bet that most people making negative comments about this car either A) Don't make enough money to afford this car, so they put it down to make themselves feel better, or B) Make a lot more money than what this car is marketed towards, so they put this car down for absolutely no reason other than "they wouldn't buy it". I personally would not buy this car... I already have a Mazda 3 hatchback. BUT, if I was looking for cheap transportation, this car would be at the top of my list.
Some people might not like the front grill. I personally think that it is a fine mix between Lexus and Mazda into one little light weight cheap 4 door sedan car. Americans be grateful that we still get the Mazda2 in the U.S. Nuff said.
Mark Wassef I am ungrateful. I want the badass hatch backs of the European Market. With more damn stick shifts. Americans are lazy. I want stick shifts. I do like this car though too.
You could always reverse the badge engineering changes done by Toyota. The Mazda dealer would be more than happy to order you a Euro Mazda2 front bumper and headlights to change the face to the way it was originally designed. Also replace the badges on the rear trunk, steering wheel and engine valve cover plastic if you want it to be more uniform to the front.
Why would anyone looking for a sub compact $16,000 car be expecting leather seats or heated seats? "Class competitive" -- you bet it is. Sometimes you talk too fast that you don't make much sense.
You need to realize this guy is a car snob. Also, I would have liked a leather steering wheel too :-/ Anyhow, I've owned a Miata and it was my first car. Great vehicle and a lot of car/quality for the money. Overall, a descent review :-)
Excellent, fun, well equipped car with 2 years free maintenance for 16k before discounts. Plus automatic emergency braking as a safety feature. I got mine for $14,004 at Del Toyota!
djkenny: not with 2k miles. You can probably get a 2016 LE model with 30k miles or so for around 13-14k where I live (NYC). Then it is most likely fleet or accident or something bad...
I bought one in January. I love this vehicle (my first car). It gets great gas mileage and it's a decent ride. I am little ashamed of how easy the interior gets dirty. The cheap plastics scratch easy, and the seats get uncomfortable after riding in them for more than an hour. Overall the car is great, especially when you get the GPS sd card.
After factory and dealer discounts, drove away with one of these for $14,500. Considered a Fit but a similarly equipped one was about $20,000 and the Honda dealer would not deal.
Nice review but I have one critical comment. If you feel, this car is "slow", that can only be because, you are comparing it to other cars, which are needlessly overpowered. The highest legal speed in the US is 80 MPH. This car will do like 120 MPH, and it accelerate more than fast enough to keep up with the traffic flow. So why should it have more power?
Sofyan, why you never talk about the audio system on the vehicles? brand, number of speakers, power and a small test reaction, that would be nice to have in your reviews
JC4 we feel it's a bit difficult to talk about a cars audio system and show it in a video. Also, to demonstrate it would involve music copyright infringement issues. We do occasionally talk about it if we feel the audio system is either very good or really crappy. This car had an audio quality that matched its price.
i think if you just mention how many speakers there are in standard and optional packages it tells us a lot about the audio system. honestly when i was getting my mazda 6 i was trying to find how many speakers it had standard and i looked at your videos to see if you talked about it. sadly i couldnt figure it out until i went to the dealer :(
Do we think this engine will be as reliable as the old Toyota 1.5s? I have an 04 Scion xB with 230k on it and its still running strong so I'm hoping Mazda engines are just as robust.
Those cars do well for small commute, not sloppy hills and in town driving. If you’re in a budget and gas savings are what you’re looking for and solid reliability and resale value (especially a Toyota) go for it. You can pimp it a little change the stereo and speakers slowly. Non-heated or cooling seats? Get it as an accessory on eBay or Amazon. Get the wind and rain deflectors for $30 too. You cam pimp it for less than $300 or less. All the extra accessories can be bought for cheaper as opposed to higher specs models.
Good point about looking up to a compact car such as the Mazda 3, but there is an ~$5k difference, according to a popular online purchasing site, so I can really see the lure of this ~$15k car with a fun nature and 6 speed manual. If my company car program goes away this fall as it's rumored to, I'd definitely have to consider this for commuting duties. Cheap to buy, own and put gas in with some fun too.
Is it better that it's 95% Mazda? What if you buy it, wanting the Toyota specs, not knowing they just slapped their badge on it? I don't know anything about Mazda, because I'm comfortable with Toyota. How does this compare to the older Yaris sedan?
The Toyota Yaris, while great basic transportation, was never competitive versus cars like the Fit, Fiesta, or the Sonic. I think the Yaris iA is a much more competitive car despite it being a rebadged Mazda and was a smart move for Toyota.
Very nice, in-depth review, thanks! I've owned an '07 & '09 Yaris and I wanted to see how the new model compared (I've loved both of my old ones, still have the '09 and it runs great).
I have the 2016 Scion iA and it was getting 42mpg when new. Now at 20k i'm getting 39. Air filter is clean. I'm thinking it's cheap oil from the free included oil changes. I could be wrong, i'll know when i do my own oil change next time. Great little car and i would buy again. Handling, braking top notch in this price range. Yes slow off the line, sport mode helps. With the mileage , it's a trade off. good review.
I have a 2017 model with the 6 speed manual i got brand new in late 2017. I used it for uber and doordash pretty much regularly as a side gig, its got 55k miles on it, i just change the oil every 7k and Just recently went to wider tires. Its Been a great little car, with it being 6spd manual its fun to drive for such a low hp number, but it weighs barely 2300lbs It could have a little more power but its a great daily driver/commuter.... i drive it hard and so far its been great! Oh and i paid 13k for it brand new since the manual one had been sitting forever and they wanted to get rid of it.... cant beat it with a stick for that price
Rare Breed i would not buy a car right now unless you really have to, pretty soon alot of people will start selling their extra cars they dont need and consolidate their expenses, but if you absolutely have to buy a car right now sounds about right. I would offer 7k and see what happens. I like the car personally.... no issues yet
Rare Breed the prices of cars will drop is what i was getting at. Lots of people will sell their extra cars soon because the economy is crashing so if you got cash and can hold off buying right now i would wait. You’re probably gonna be able to buy the car for 5k in a few more months.... as far as refinancing, you can only do that with the interest rate not the price of the car.
I find it interesting that Push to Start is standard on the Yaris iA, because it is not standard on the Toyota Corolla. It only comes with the optional package on the lower trim levels
It is a subcompact car, you’re bashing it way too much. The purpose of this car is for three points that people look for 1. Reliability 2. Gas mileage And lastly 3. Pricing.
Im hoping to get one to replace my 99 civic. It seems like an updated version of that car. A simple, slightly sporty, fuel-sipper that's widely available to the public.
I have a coworker who has this and he loves it as a daily driver. He traded an old Chevy aveo for this. He says it’s a little uncomfortable on long trips but he loves it just driving around town.
I'm so glad we get the genuine Mazda2 here in Australia. It's SO much better looking than that. What was Mazda thinking when they let Toyota get their hands on it? We also get the real Toyota Yaris here although it's nowhere near as good looking as the Mazda2, nor as good a vehicle.

I'd rather get the normal Yaris over this if I had to choose, it has a Toyota engine and it just looks better. But honestly I don't get the appeal of having to have a brand new car if you can only afford the entry level car. For $16k you can get a really nice Camry, it won't be brand new obviously but you'd have lots more room and way more features if the original owner spec'd it out. And before you say "But a used car won't have a warranty", you can buy a car from CarMax and buy a warranty from them. But honestly, it's a Toyota, as long as you do the maintenance on time then it won't have issues.
think there's any hope of putting some after market parts into this to get some more power? any recommendations? I'm gonna be buying one next week and wanna make it a little more fun over time
The car is overall a good commuter. Uphill it's a nightmare at low speeds. The bluetooth it's old and it has lag, so watching videos makes it worthless for the passengers. Overall a good car I'm satisfied with it.
Sofyan, honestly, I think Toyota needs to fix the options list and the trim lines because it's only offered in one trim, and consumers want more features for the money.
It's 99% Mazda 2. The only thing that's Toyota in this car is the badging. EDIT: Yes you can get an armrest, dealer add-on. As for the infotainment system it's Lynx based. There are dozens of add-ons you can get for it without the dealer.
In Asia this is known as the Toyota Vios, but with a different body. I wish Toyota would develop a Yaris/Vios sedan hybrid just like the 2020 Corolla/Altis.
Just try to find replacement tires for that car: the tire size is carried by VERY FEW tire makers these days. P185/60R16 I love it ! To me it is like the old 2004-2008 Corolla design reborn in a Mazda: A small, 'NARROW' car, that has a nice low starting price. The only thing I don't like about it is the horrible front grill. I would buy a can of spray paint that matches the car's color, and paint that bar in the middle of the grill the same color as the car itself , that would help enormously.
Really hate these 16s on econoboxes. Cheap tires (name brands) is what drives these models to be affordable when it comes to maintenance. New set of 4s are huge expenses so really makes a tremendous impact on the wallet when you have affordable tire sizes.
Honestly, I would choose this car over a Corolla any day. There is so many of those at my school. Considering this or a Ford Fiesta for my first car. 😋
I'm guessing the Yaris is Dead.. I miss the 2006-2007 Yaris ! The Canadian version of the 2006 - 2011 Yaris has more features than the American version!!
Seriously think it was a fatal mistake on Mazda's part on NOT marketing their 2's in the states. Same applies with BMW's 1 series & Mercedes' A Class! Have people who can't afford a typical one of their cars or SUVs (just yet) buy their "entry level" cars, and introduce them to a SHIT. LOAD. of standard brand features & options also available on the bigger cars & SUVs. Get people wanting to not only desire purchasing the better, more powerful & more luxurious cars in their lineup, but have the entry level people DREAM, STRIVE and BUST. ASS. to eventually upgrade themselves into VERY. LOYAL. CUSTOMERS. WHY THE FUCK DON'T THESE CAR COMPANIES SEE THIS???
reliability, standard equipment, cheap price = easy win

Fake. Toyota didn't make any kind of originality. Hiace, fake Yaris, and the Supra are ruined cars. The real yaris is made from Thailand.
So its a Toyota Scion Mazda Mazda 2 Yaris iA

Toyota Scion Mazda Mazda 2 Yaris iA

rubberdukk2424 it won't be long before we start seeing all that "extra" stuff, even in this class :)
He was disappointed that there was no leather wrapped steering wheel...LOL
buildmorefarms100 my Mazda 2 has leather wrap steering wheel but the dashboard doesn't have leather trim, instead we get a textured piano finish.

I just picked up the same car for my daughter’s first car. Not bad for a 5 year old car. It’s solid yet affordable for a first car.
I like the fact of this car having a 6 speed stick transmission
Duke Of Prunes Otherwise you gotta order a car with it right?
I was actually thinking about buying one of these. How much do these run for?
Someguyto Actually a bargain. Only $15k with a manual transmission and you get a brand new, well built, and fuel efficient vehicle.

I am seriously looking into buying one. Question is should I trade my 94 Honda civic in for one or should I keep it?

EDIT: Yes you can get an armrest, dealer add-on. As for the infotainment system it's Lynx based. There are dozens of add-ons you can get for it without the dealer.

Royhan the front is very different

Cool nice Mazda...
the look and design looks like a hybrid of ford fiesta and hyundai elantra
In Asia this is known as the Toyota Vios, but with a different body. I wish Toyota would develop a Yaris/Vios sedan hybrid just like the 2020 Corolla/Altis.
I love Yaris ! I want one
I like the grill.
It's kinda cute. Fits the car, I think.
Cause tbh nobody is going to get a Yaris iA to look cool. lmao
Put twin 12's in there and it ups the cool factor exponentially. They'll hear you coming before they see that sleek ass grill
@@di7645what's twin 12s?
Just try to find replacement tires for that car: the tire size is carried by VERY FEW tire makers these days. P185/60R16
I love it !
Simon Heller don’t get a Ford
A Karl English Production see i’m stuck between the two. This or the Fiesta. Love them both in consideration of style.
It's fine but I kind of wish Mazda would make their less ugly version available.
Can you add Satellite Radio via a transmitter and plug it in? You hit the key fob for trunk access.
armrest is an option on toyotas website when you build & price this car
I've had this car in 2010 if you are good economical car... This is it... You can argue the price down quite significantly.
The other toyota yaris years that are not IA are 4 speed automatics or standard transmissions.
You should drive a Canadian 2006-2007 LE/RS Yaris Manual!! NOW THAT was a very good Yaris version to me!!!!!!
They should've left the Mazda front end alone, it's much better looking then this Toyota-version front end.
This is honestly a modern version of my 2000 Civic lol. I would spend the extra money and go for a Corolla
low speed braking??? What other type of driver assistance comes in cars now a days? I still have yet to see anyone using the autonomous parking yet.
Sofuyan, where do you take these songs? Share, please.
For the money there isnt a better equipped or more fun to drive car out there in this class.
It's a shame you don't get the hybrid Yaris there. I think it's far more interesting than this rebadged Mazda.
I'm guessing the Yaris is Dead.. I miss the 2006-2007 Yaris ! The Canadian version of the 2006 - 2011 Yaris has more features than the American version!!
Basic Yaris DOES NOT have a CVT. It has an antiquated 4 speed.
If the old top gear/grand tour review this car I'm sure they will definitely drop a piano on it 😂
How do you get the chirp to second gear? I have a manual iA and can never get it to chirp.
Perfect autocross vehicle!!😁👍🏼
The reviewer should add crash test results to his videos. I'd like to know how the Yaris compares to other small cars in this segment.
It Offers A Lot Of The Price .
The new iA is Toyota's spiritual successor to its old AE86
Thanks. But of course there are some cheap parts. I expect that for the price and overall package.
