This is a great video! I wonder if they demolished this store if HyVee or another grocery chain could build a new store. Eagle's was a great grocery chain though.
I worked at Eagle Foods store #237 (Hanover Park, IL) and later at store #247 (Hoffman Estates, IL) from 1970 until 1983. It was a great job! Worked 5 years as night crew chief re-stocking the store, and then on day shift as asst. produce manager. Eagle was clean, no frills store (no in store bakery or deli) but with a great meat dept and produce was excellent. Filled in at the 2 Elgin stores on Liberty St and McLean Blvd from time to time. I believe the Montgomery store, near Aurora, was the highest volume store, but both Elgin stores rocked.
The great days of the small grocery brands and independent stores. This store is not in too bad of shape considering how long it has been closed. You can picture what a nice store it must have been back in the day. Lots of character in the structure and fond memories for the people who worked and shopped there. Great video thank you for the history!
I worked at this store starting in 1994 as a UT (utility clerk/bagger) and moved up to cashier and the customer service desk. I used to sit on that bench in front of the store shown in the video and smoke cigarettes on my breaks. In December 1998, Eagle moved from this location up the road to an old Jewel-Osco store. I left Eagle when I moved away for college in 1999, and as other have pointed out, Eagle went out of business and the new location became a Sullivan's in the early 2000s. Eagle was my first real job. I have a lot of great memories of the people who worked there and the colorful customers, especially at the location shown in this video. It's hard to believe the store has sat empty for so long, but there's also a ton of empty buildings in Freeport. When I peered in the windows several years ago, it was full of dead birds and looked like it hadn't been touched since Eagle moved out in 1998. Good to see it's been cleaned up, and hopefully someone develops it instead of leaving it to rot.
I worked for Eagle in 93/94 and then during the last years of 2000 til closing in Sept.03. Ive found myself obsessed at times with Eagle. Ive bought Eagle memorabilia off Ebay and am keeping my eyes peeled for more. I enjoy visiting the store in Dubuque. Many great memories working for the 'big bird'.
@@jaybobred6552 Nice to meet a fellow Eagle nut. We started shopping at Eagle in the early 90s. The original Country Market opened in my home town. I also have bought Eagle memorabilia from Ebay. I have an Eagle Discount Supermarket trucker hat and a Eagle Food Center tie tack from the 1960s. My eyes are always peeled for Eagle stuff.
Wow didn't realize there were any Eagle buildings left. I grew up in SW Rockford and we had an Eagle Foods near my house. It unfortunately burned downed in the 80's.
I lived about three blocks from this store while in high school in Freeport. This building was a conversion and rebuild. Prior to the Eagles it was a Piggly Wiggly, and had been since the early 60’s. Lincoln Mall opened in the mid 60’s and Eagles took over and converted in the mid 60’s around the time the Mall was built. The mall was built and anchored by Sears to the east and JCPenney to the West - closest to Eagles. I worked at that McDonald’s across the street and in some of your video - also rebuilt at least twice - when I was in High School. There is a second site in Freeport which also was an Eagle store. It is located on the south side of town at South Street and West Street. It too has been closed and abandoned for years. Unlike the one in your video which was the Piggle Wiggly, the South Street store was built as an eagle.
Thank you for the information. I don't know if you've explored my channel further, but I have video of the South eagle and the mall. Thank you for watching.
@@mallaholicretailadventures I just saw it on your list today. I appreciate it. As I mentioned I grew up in Freeport and similar to many small midwestern towns, the history of Freeport is long and storied. I enjoy your channel!!
The old in/out signs remind me of the Eagle on the west side of St. Charles(built in the 70s). My parents and I shopped there in the 80s and 90s. I worked there in 94. Good memories. Thanks for this video.
my home town ... there is another eagle store as well here that is abandoned 1700 block of s west ave .. this store moved from this store to a new location then it was bought out by sullivan's 2002 w galena ave !
There was one in Carol Stream, but someone bought it and kept it as a neighborhood grocery. There is a Jewel and there was a Dominick's about a mile away.
Those stores were bought by private entities from Eagle after the company went bankrupt and closed in the early 2000s. The private investors bought the signage and the right to continue to use the Eagle name, but the Dubuque and Clinton stores were not officially Eagle stores after the Milan, Ill.,-based company went out of business.
Good catch! The store was initially built as a Piggle Wiggly grocery store and had that quonset hut style roofline before it was modernized and converted to an Eagle.
There was an Eagle s tore in Bolingbrook on the corner of Boughton and Weber Road. There is a Best Buy in there now. I worked for a short time in Freeport in the late 90's. The east side of Freeport was not very good. The high school name is the Freeport Pretzels. Freeport is in a nice part of the state. It's not too far from Galena.
Yeah it's a little more hilly there. Our high school my senior year played the pretzels in the regional but they twisted us like a pretzel. 😆 😆 I remember seeing an old a and w drive in there in back then.
Makes no sense why they would spend time and money stripping the place out but leave the roof leaking and growing mold. Who wants to buy a mold damaged building? Am I missing something?
There used to be an abandoned eagle foods in my hometown of galesburg il which must have closed in 2003 but was turned into b.g foods till it closed again but I have no idea when that happened then in 2010 Dunham sports and world buffet bought the building and its now those but I still see an f&m bank label scar by the world buffet sign and some other label scars everywhere else
@@mallaholicretailadventures Produce was on the far right side of the store (if looking at the store from the street as you are in this video). The deli and bakery were on the left front side, frozen food aisles on the far left side. The dairy department was in the left rear corner and the meat counter was in the center rear. Shopping carts were just inside the entrance on the right side. I used to know the aisles and what products could be found in each.
We had an Eagle Food Center in Tilton, ILL

I worked at the Eagle Food Center warehouse in Milan, IL, and my last month working there was in September, 2003. I worked there for 24 years.

The Eagle Food grocery store in Milan, IL, down the street from the warehouse, is a Walgreens now. Same building with facial changes.
Great find! I have been obsessed with Eagle since I was a kid. I’ve never seen the green & red version of the “in / out” door sign.

You're welcome. I enjoyed the nostalgia of this.
I have fond memories of the Eagle grocery store in Westmont back in the day. Another great video!
There used to be a Piggly Wiggly in this spot. On the right side was a restaurant first called the Sugar n Spice, then the Wine n Dine.

The location on far west Galena (that’s now the Sullivan’s) originally was the Jewel.
I remember the one in Ottawa, IL. that's now a Kroger.
Country club hills Illinois have abandoned eagles
There was one in Carol Stream, but someone bought it and kept it as a neighborhood grocery. There is a Jewel and there was a Dominick's about a mile away.
I had an eagle in my town and it’s now county market
Apparently there are two STILL open There is one in Dubuque Iowa and in Clinton Iowa.
Yeah I know, eventually I will be getting over to that one. It would be cool to see. I think Clinton is gone though.
Sadly the store in Clinton closed less than 1 yr after reopening in late '03

That arched ceiling inside looks like it woulda been a Safeway. Guessing prob not, that Eagle's is original there, but it does look like it imo.

Nice use to work at a computer store RGB computers near there! Pretzel capital of the USA
There was another eagle foods on the other side of Freeport that is still abandoned as of 2 years ago

The building looks different now mas roofing bought it and is fixing it up
Speaking of abandoned food stores, can you visit the abndoned shopko on pioneer pkwy in Peoria.
I don't know when I'll get back down there again but I'll keep it in mind
My mom lives by thier

There was one in mchenry Illinois
Yeah they were everywhere up here.
A construction company purchased the building and are redoing a lot of it. Unsure what their end goal is though.
Beem closed since 2003 and they were supposed to be remodeled since 2017 and looks like nothing been done
I know eagles is used to shop there
Are u gonna do any video in Aurora or Naperville’s
I have quite a few videos on my channel.

Interesting barrel roof on the left side.
Yeah. I wonder if that was produce.

Why open a store where itll just be looted.
Yeah. When coming through town, didn't look good.

This was a Piggly Wiggly location a few lifetimes ago.
