The guy on the Rickenbacker is Maurice Gibb. He and Robin are actually twin brothers. Barry is the oldest. Yes they were born in Douglas-Isle of Man & raised in Redcliffe, Australia. They started singing together in 1958.

The Gibb brothers were born in The Isle Of Man then moved to Australia when they were 12 and 8 years old. They then moved back to the UK in 1967. They listened to the Mills Brothers in their early childhood and learned to do the three part harmonies from primarily them. The bass player is Maurice, he was a great bass player and an multi instrumentalist. They had always been drawn to R&B and soul and admired R&B groups like The Stylistics. ❤❤❤

The brothers had no musical education. They apparently surprised themselves when they just started singing in harmony one day after listening to a record with harmony at ages 6 and 9. Barry and then the 3 of them were writing songs as children. Robin said in an interview that he and Barry never played instruments for fun, only when they were writing songs. Maurice was the multi-instrumentalist and tech guy of the group, but he was also the one who often filled in the harmony after Barry and Robin had chosen their parts. Often he did the high parts, espesially in their early years. They were 3 amazingly talented individuals, who were even a greater as a sum of their parts. By their accounts, they were composers first, singers/performers second. They never learned to read music. The instrumental arrangments and breaks came as part of the composition which they would work through with their instumentaists or they would sometimes sing the parts to the instrumentalists they had working with them. (There is a story of Maurice doing this for the horn section on a song, for instance.) So they did not have flashy guitar solos etc. The song itself and the vocals were the stars of each piece.

They are both gone now along with younger brother Andy, who had a solo career, leaving oldest brother Barry as last man standing. My heart goes out to him. The Brothers Gibb were from the UK. They only lived in Australia for 8 years. The BeeGees were: the tallest and oldest brother (with the big hair and beard), Barry Gibb, born September 1, 1946, the only surviving Gibb brother. Robin Gibb (with the long hair, no beard), born December 22, 1949-passed away May 20, 2012, and Robin's fraternal twin brother Maurice (the balding brother with the beard, pronounced "Morris") Gibb, born December 22, 1949-passed away January 12, 2003. They also had another, younger, brother Andy Gibb, born March 5, 1958-passed away March 10, 1988.
The three oldest brothers were born on the Isle of Man (UK). Oldest brother Barry got seriously burned when he accidentally pulled boiling tea over himself at 18 months old. He was in coma for a while, nearly died and was in hospital for many months. Because of this, he did not learn to talk until after the twins were born. Later the family moved to Manchester and from there they emigrated to Australia in 1958, right after Andy was born.
All 4 brothers are just natural musical talents. All of them dropped out of high school in their early teens and none of them could read or write music. All their compositions were created completely organically.
Their musical career, which they had started as little kids, didn't lead to international success so they moved back to the UK in 1966. Then they had a string of big hits, until they temporarily broke up around 1970 for 15 months. Started back up, looking for a new sound which they first found in 1974 with the transitional album "Mr. Natural". After that "Main Course" was the first album that moved them into a new direction: more rhythm&blues, dance music like with great hits like Nights on Broadway and Jive Talkin' (and was also actually the first album on which their logo was introduced).
From 1976 on they went all out with falsetto driven dance music which lead to their biggest commercial success as they provided classic songs for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (1977 Stayin' Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever amongst them). You should react to the 1979 live version of Stayin' Alive, too ruclips.net/video/7niXSh7vWRI/видео.html Other great songs to analyze: great album tracks from the 1979 Spirits Having Flown album, the title song: ruclips.net/video/WH_j90fCIk4/видео.html, the outrageously beautiful song Reaching Out ruclips.net/video/vfHUS5Mf00Q/видео.html. 'Jive talking' was a phrase used in the 70s in the black community. It meant, "You're bullsh--- me!'" We used that phrase a lot when I was in high school and college (1972 - 1976) Maurice (bass player) said a man from India told him what it meant. Barry said every evening when he drove over a certain bridge, he would hear the sound of the tires on the bridge that is played at the beginning. So sad, that the black community did not embrace their talents. Some radio stations would get so many requests for their songs, that on the weekends they had something called a 'Bee Gees Free Weekend.' NO requests for their songs. In the summer of 2021, a radio station in the Philadelphia area had a Bee Gees summer with their songs. My only disappointment was they played the same songs.

The song was originally called "Drive Talking" in its early stage. The song's rhythm was modelled after the sound their car made crossing the Julia Tuttle Causeway each day from Biscayne Bay to Criteria Studios in Miami. The scratchy guitar intro was done by Barry and the funky bass line by Maurice. The pulsing synthesiser bass line, which featured in the final recording, was one of the earliest uses of "synth bass" on a pop recording. It was overdubbed by keyboardist Blue Weaver. "Usually Maurice would play bass guitar, but he was away from the studio that night. And when Maurice came back, we let him hear it and suggested he re-record the bass line on his bass guitar". "I really liked the synth bass lines", Maurice said. "I overdubbed certain sections to add bass extra emphasis".
According to Maurice, while hearing this rhythmic sound, "Barry didn't notice that he's going 'Ji-Ji Jive Talkin' ', thinking of the dance, 'You dance with your eyes'.."We played it to [producer] Arif [Mardin], and he went 'Do you know what "Jive Talkin'" means?' And we said 'Well yeah, it's, ya know, you're dancing.'] And he says 'No, it's a black expression for bullshitting.' And we went 'Oh, really?!? Jive talkin', you're telling me lies...' and changed it."

Born on the Isle of Mann, moved to Manchester, then to Australia to keep the boys out of reform school and hoping for work for their father. They moved a LOT. Barry said they were “that family, leaving in the night with their suitcases.” Poor, but had family, talent, humor, and big, big dreams. Worked professionally for 7 years as the family of 7’s only income, before returning to England where they were signed to a five year contract with the same record company as the Beatles. Instantly had money. Barry was 20 and the twins barely 17. Barry is the dominant song writer, but prefers to write in a team. Robin preferred writing lyrics and singing, while Maurice (“Mo”) dominated on the instrumental side. Made the perfect songwriting team. They were quick studies on all things related to music, including production, but always ready to learn from others. When their European career stalled, they moved to Miami, absorbed the vibe and reinvented themselves for a new decade. Jive Talkin was their comeback song, which they had to go through all over again in the 80’s. They hold the record for having #1’s in the most decades, and Barry is still working. As long as he lived, Mo stayed up on the newest thing coming out and was going to be one of the first to own one. They are all said to have perfect pitch, and no one could have worked harder and more passionately. I think they are fan favorites because of their massive catalog with so much variety and depth. You can’t go wrong with the BeeGees. Please react to MORE THAN A WOMAN - the video that popped up at the end of Jive Talkin.

They were British, and spent 9 years as kids in Australia (you can even see their videos from the late 1950s and early 1960s right here on RUclips--they were kids and already harmonizing and writing songs and performing!) They moved back to England after that. Eventually they lived in Miami, with Robin also living in England. Barry still lives in Miami. They spanned 4 decades of writing hit songs again and again, through a variety of genres, they can do it all! And such poetic lyrics!! You have a lot of Bee Gees songs yet to go!! Here are a few to write down for later: More Than A Woman, Fanny Be Tender, Alone, One, Stayin' Alive, You Should Be Dancin', Love You Inside and Out, Love So Right, How Do You Mend A Broken Heart, Night Fever, Run To Me, Words, and that's just breaking the surface. I could go on and on listing songs. And there are no bad Bee Gee songs. So anything you pick you will love. Have fun exploring their incredible catalog of songs over the years, and we'll have fun with you by watching along! Thanks, and God bless!

I was a young child in the 70's when people would use the phrase "jive turkey" as an insult. I grew up in the hood, so my family spent a lot of time hanging out with other families and us kids would just run wild. At one point the boy next door called me a jive turkey. I have no idea where I heard this comeback, but I spoke out, up, and with authority, "Eat me pilgrim!" My momma's hand came flying out of nowhere and with the precision of a sharp shooter made perfect and direct contact with my behind! I had no idea why I got that whooping until I was about 16! 😅😅

The emigrated from England to Australia. One of the main factors in starting fresh somewhere else was because Robin Gibb was getting a little too well known to the local cops as a little firebug around town! 😂

New fan of yours just discovered you and you quickly became one of my faves. Love what you have to say. Hey… give you props that you never say anything like “this white boy can sing” … While I do realize how musically talented black musicians and vocalists are, I sorta love you recognize white musicians too… and never ever mention color of skin. I wish everyone saw people as just people and not even mention the color of their skin at all. Just a thought I was thinking watching your videos! I think you do a great job!

Bass player is Maurice, they call him Mo. He's super talented. Gets the least recognition.

I want a Rickenbacher bass and a 350 or 550. I have a Hofner bass that I switched from right to left handed (the strings). I added that a couple years ago to my 2 Marting sigma acoustics, a Mexican stratocaster, trumpet, saxophone, harmonicas and keyboard. THese guys are Aussies and they got started around the same time the Beatles got famous. (1963) They were famous child singers down under.

Maurice (pronounced Morris) Gibb played the bass, and he often did. He also played a lot of other instruments, including the keyboard. :)

Most BeeGees songs have a surprise in it. Mo was the king of Bass. They were born on the Isle of Mann but were raised right here in Queensland Australia. Try listening to Fanny be tender. It's a true masterpiece.

Hey Aussie here.......Just saying we have 'Soul' here in Australia mate lol. Bee Gee's were born in the UK and raised in Australia. Then the world discovered them...lol They have written so many #1 hits but too many to mention. they also wrote hits for Barbara Streisand, Dion Warwick, Diana Ross, Celine Dion. Dolly Parton + many more. The sound track for the movie Saturday Night Fever. Glad you're discovering Aussie talent. Recommend John Farnham, and Jimmy Barnes duet of "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" if you want to see a little Aussie style 'Soul' lol ruclips.net/video/8gzH9qk8cOc/видео.html Also check out The Teskey Brothers cover of 'Rain' Josh Teskey channelling a little Otis Redding... Sorry but I felt like I should challenge you sir lol. Love from Australia Liked and Subscribed

The Bee Gees had a lot of hits. They also wrote or produced a number of hits for other artists. Best song... "I Just Want To Be Your Everything" by Andy Gibb (their younger brother), "Guilty" by Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb, "Emotion" by Samantha Sang

Regarding their origins, actually, they were born on the Isle of Man, and grew up in Manchester, England till Barry was around 11 and the twins were around 9 or so. They were pretty rowdy, and were getting into juvie trouble, so the constable told their mom one day that maybe they should take the boys somewhere they could run around and cut loose before they get in some REAL trouble, so the family moved to Australia. That's when they started playing clubs and making tv appearances. In 1966, they had their first Australian #1, Spicks and Specks, and they were ready to move on to bigger and better things, so they moved back to England and signed up with manager/producer Robert Stigwood. The rest is history. Maurice (pronounced Morris) is on base, fraternal twin Robin is in the middle, and Barry, the big brother by 3 years, is singing lead.

You should be dancin, should be next. Sound track for Stayin Alive. (John Travilta disco flick) their younger brother Andy, who sings as the 4th BeeGee in this song, although, too young to be in the original band, sometimes played with them, but, also had his own very successful solo career, in which Barry wrote most of his songs, and played background vocals in most of them. Here’s the here’s the link to You should be dancin. ruclips.net/video/_JoZS6LgqYI/видео.html
