Hi!..What an enjoyable and relaxed interview with my forever friend Rodney Mills. ..I've never heard all of the details and information contained in this well done interview session. ..I was in The Bushmen band with Rodney from 1964-1968 and it was pure joy. ..Sound was always Rodney's "ear candy" and we were fortunate to have him build us the best sound system in the Southeast during the sixties. ..Not only did our group play for teen functions and dances across the Southeast in every imaginable type of venue but we also did concerts with the following: The Rolling Stones,Otis Redding,Roy Orbison,Del Shannon,Paul Revere & The Raiders,Fats Domino,Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels,The Outsiders,B.J. Thomas,The Kingsmen,Billy Joe Royal,Ronny & The Daytonas,Bobby Vinton,Johnny & The Hurricanes,Brian Hyland,The Shangri -Las,Ace Cannon,The Diamonds,Roger Miller,The Newbeats,The Tams,The Box Tops,Bobby Boris Pickett,The Hombres,The American Breed,Tommy Roe, etc. ..It was a fantastic time to be involved with the sixties music scene. ..Happy to say that Rodney and his incredible wife Mary are still our best friends and there's no doubt that they totally enjoy every day here on planet earth to the max. .."Thanks For The Memories"!!..

Great to finally put a face to the man who's name I read on my favorite albums as a teenage. I wore out .38 Special and Johnny Van Zant as a teenage with a guitar in my hand.
Once again this music shaped me as a musician and lead to me having a career as a musician. Amazing music and this man was an Integral part of it all.

What a great interview. I recently had the privilege of meeting Rodney and his lovely wife Mary, through a mutual friend. After I sat in at my friend's gig, he introduced and I sat with them for an hour or so listening to some of those stories. Rodney told me to let them know if I ever booked a gig in Jacksonville (my hometown though I don't live there these days). So I immediately went home and booked a gig in Jax for November 8th, and he and his wife have reservations. I am absolutely honored, and thrilled. He is absolutely a legend.

You are lucky to have survived that plane ride because you were in trouble when you passed out because of your heart condition.
I did the same thing but I had drove to the hospital and when I walked up to the er window my heart stopped. They said it stopped three times that morning. So they went back in and reopened two stints I had had previously and the next Monday I had 4xbypass surgery that’s been two years ago. Praise the Lord every morning.

Love your channel, most of what you say technically goes over my head constantly but I love your passion. I’m 67 so no hope for me, but brought up in Liverpool and still have a cavern membership card ( underage when I got it) always loved music of most genres, I’ve not been so excited about a new artist for many years as I have about Ren, independent, no auto tune, most of his videos are one take live, can’t define him by genre, listen to ‘ Hi Ren’ 91/2 minutes in one take, Jenny and Screech 13 minute trilogy, like watching a movie where the story only comes total together in the last line and his rap is like Eminem on steroids, so there is stuff out there, you just have to find it

Thank you Rodney and Craig for the interview. I very much enjoyed it. I’ve been into music all my life. I was living in Doraville in the mid seventies and was very much familiar with music scene. Especially in the south during that era. I lived not far from studio one and hung out at a local club named CW Shaw’s. The owner Chuck Rinaldo was friends with the ARS gang. The music scene was wide open. So much good music around Atlanta. And what a adventure for Rodney Mills getting to meet and work with all those musical giants

I listened to you again tonight. I don't want to name drop. In my small time in music I couldn't believe how the musicians were so poor. Mostly on meth or something. I would come to the bar and offer $100 bucks if they let me sing. They would all nearly fight over it. Even the owner of the bar would get angry. I was always amazed that whatever song I could come up with, they would jump right behind it and make me sound like a hero.

I met Rodney and the guys in .38 Special when they were recording at Studio One. All were super nice guys. Rodney allowed me into the studio where so many great hits were recorded. I remember playing pinball there with Jeff and Don from 38. I walked in the studio one night and Jeff was in the control room playing the lead to Fantasy Girl. Great memories never to be forgotten. Rodney is just like you see here. He is the most down to earth, nicest guy you will ever meet. Rodneys work is extraordinary! He is a musical genius. Really enjoyed this it just kind of came on my radar after rewatching a Skynyrd doc. For a me there are those handful of songs that thankfully never get old it doesn't matter how many times you listen and "Brandy" is one of those for me. Interesting that I just saw Ozark or finish watching it rather and that song is in it. It made me think of "Dancing in the Moonlight"by King Harvest.

Rodney and I were on the phone one time when they had a studio a few blocks from Colony Square. Can't remember its name At the time, I did not know he was in the Bushmen. As to ARS, I'm the agent that booked them into the Great SE Music Hall. I was a partner with A. Diggs. Sonny Limbo wanted to do an album on one of my groups. I found talent, but none of them had integrity. After 5 years, I bailed. No nonsense.

Rodney made the guitars speak, especially with ARS and Skynyrd. Tom Dowd for some reason maybe subconsciously, did not want to do a great job for Skynyrd, the live album aside. Gimme Back My Bullets was flat sounding. Maybe Dowd thought they were not as good as his pride and joy the Allman Brothers? Do not know. Still if you listen ARS’ A Rock’n’Roll Alternative, Skynyrd’s Second Helping and Street Survivors, sonically those guitar tones surpass anything Tom Dowd did with anyone! I LOVE the ABB, Derek and the Dominos Layla, the Cream stuff Dowd did etc. But if you compared these classics with headphones, Rodney’s stuff is better. For proof listen to ARS’ take on the Cream cover “ Outside Woman Blues” on A Rock and Roll Alternative. Barry Bailee’s tone and playing are superb.

Rodney Mills definitely knows how to capture great guitar tone but you've got to give Tom Dowd credit for The Allman Brothers Band " Live At Fillmore East". As with Skynyrd's "One More From The Road", Dowd's ability to capture a bands live sound was unparalleled.
