It is fantastic that the sport has now come to be more inclusive and that Black girls also have the opportunity to excel. Women like Dominique Dawes, Gabby Douglas, and Simone Biles have really helped to give young Black girls role models to look up to and see that they too can achieve excellence.

Unfortunately she probably won’t. D1 college gymnatics though does feature a lot of skills used in Olympic routines. She’s a little old for the Olympics, as she would’ve had to start training elite awhile back and started training for the Olympics also earlier. But college is awesome too

I'll give it a go. Everyone can see she's what our society labels as a "black person". When you "call it out", what is implied is that it's "more relevant" or more meaningful because she's a black girl. Why would this matter? What do I care? It matters and I care because every time something is Black girl magic, or "the first black" it actually feels like it diminishes the effort or reduces down to mere race what the person has achieved, when really, the "magic" is all just the person in question, rather than "black girl magic" as a generalization. No question, she worked hard to get to this place, and maybe, just maybe she felt or in fact had to work harder to get there because she's black. But unless you talked with her and she told you this, you have no evidence other than assumptions based on...what? Also, unless I missed it, she never once "took ownership" of it as a black achievement or black girl magic. You and others put those labels on her. If you just called it "magical", no reasonable person would disagree, AND, then, instead of it coming across as a dividing line, all the real people in the world who can see that she "happens to be black" can appreciate her and her hard work rather than having their attention be focused on her "color/race". If we want to stop marginalizing people because of their "race", we need to first stop highlighting them because of their race, even in positive circumstances.

Also, sticking the Biles is great, but doing a hard move in your Gym, with your friends is a far cry from an International meet, where you must have a complete great floor exercise, and a great vault, and great bars and beam routines, under enormous pressure and maybe a not so friendly European or Asian crowd.

To all the butthurt Karens out there whining that race should be left out of the praise in comments: representation matters, can you comprehend how isolating it might feel to not find or see others who are like you in what you are doing? We all do this in every area of our lives, not just race. Eg if you suffer from a rare disease, you seek out others with the same illness. If you are having a specific problem, you find a support group. If your first language is foreign, you seek out others in the community who speak it too. We are designed to seek common ground, no matter how much we deny it that is programmed into being human. Would you belittle a wheelchair user who was praising another person in the disabled community for a great achievement? No, cause that would make you an asshat. So stop doing that when it relates to race or culture. Go home, Karen.
