The textures look fantastic, but the removal of the bloom actually bothers me a bit. I never thought of it as being an issue. If you mixed the high quality textures with the bloom and native lighting, I feel as though I would like that more.
I think they used a lot of bloom to mask the poor texture work in the original game, so without it it looks a little flat. Though I agree there was too much. This looks great, but comes out a little grainy (though I accept it might just be what we're used to)
The texture work in the original game was fine I think. The bloom was probably added to make the game look more comparable to more advanced games of the time such as half-life 2 or something. most of the textures were around 256 x 256 or 128x128 (although they were very mipmap heavy, low res far away, normal up close) hard to notice on an old CRT
i dont like the bloom in mkwii because its wayyyy too strong, but turning it off altogether makes you notice how flat the shading is. There's barely any vertex lighting and the lack of pre-baked ambient occlusion makes most sections of a track have the exact same flat light level with no contrast
While your claim is opinionated, your reasoning is false. The reason why the characters look so flat in this version is not because of bloom removal, it’s because of the removal of the intense sheen on the characters. The bloom effect itself only blurs pixels of a certain brightness NOT Shade or highlight the characters. I prefer the more intense specular highlights in the original because it gives the game more dimension ^^.
ngl I’m a sucker for the bloom. It gives the game such a specific and iconic look. There’s something to be said about stylization and a game reflecting the era it was made in.

The bloom and shine effects are gone and it feels like the game suffered a downgrade in the lighting department. The textures do look cool tho. But still, this is no remaster, I still prefer the original look just because of the lighting. I think the characters look better with their glossy finishes mixed with this upgraded environment. These upgraded character textures look a bit dark and don’t stand out well from the background. It seems as if lighting doesn’t affect them so they’re always dark.
I want to mention that as of 5.0-18238, the Dolphin Emulator user folder is no longer in the Documents folder by default for Windows, though Dolphin will continue to use it from there if it is found. The best way to find it now is in the menu bar (File > Open User Folder). This also makes finding the user folder easy for users on Mac and Linux.

The problem isn't so much the bloom effect as it is people ignorantly recording crappy Wii footage on their old CRT TV's, making the console's visuals look bad. Honestly, just spend 5 bucks on an HDMI converter and connect the console to a modern TV. It makes a WORLD of a difference in visual clarity! When I finally bought a 4KHD TV, my Wii looked like crap until I gave it a proper hookup. Yes, the bloom effect is a slight annoyance, but MKWii looks better than Double Dash overall. I honestly think this is a huge downgrade. The bloom isn't bad, it's needed to get the right look and feel. When you show the comparisons, the image goes from soft and bright, to dry and bland-looking. In my opinion of course, the bloom shouldn't be removed, it takes away the look and feel of the game and turns it into something like, as others have already pointed out, an upscaled gamecube game, it looks too dry.
i really don’t see this as improving mario kart wii. in some regards, sure things look a little bit better, but overall this feels more like a downgrade than any actual upgrade. it almost looks like mario kart DS got ported to the wii, which sounds weird to say, but there’s kind of a reason the bloom and lighting effects are there. all the models have flat texturing, and without the lighting and shadows, the appeal is almost gone entirely. on another note, most of the games assets in terms of characters were basically taken right from mario kart double dash, a game that, while it looks great on the gamecube, looks terrible with mario kart wii's art style by itself, and even double dash with its higher saturation still uses lighting effects a ton to get its art direction the way it is. overall, i think this isn’t as much of an upgrade, as it basically removes a lot of mario kart wii's appeal by making the game flatter and making the art direction less attractive by removing the lighting effects. some textures do look nice, and credit to the original pack designers for their work, but overall i can’t see this as an improvement to the original and i would prefer that over a lot of this.
I remember as a little kid coming from an Xbox 360 when I got my first Wii I was surprised how bad the graphics were. I thought the Wii is going to have some mind blowing graphics but the reality was this low resolution mid graphics paired with that weird bloom which looked awful. However I was greatly surprised by the fidelity of the Wii U finally supporting HD graphics.

Hey. I am using the texture page from your web page in combination with the hud remaster from Game Restorers, and I noticed an effect I do not like. The edges look glitched. It is only slightly visible, like chromatic aberration. But I hate that effect. You can see it very well on the course "N64 Sherbet Land" when you look at the edges of the penguins while drifting. Do you know what that could be, and how to disable it? Besides that, I love the pack. The effect also shows up when I disable or even delete the pack from Game Restorers, so it is because of yours. Greetings from Germany! Edit: I found the issue on my own and I was able to fix it. Apperantly the creator doesnt give a shit, so if someone is experiencing similar or other issues youre more than welcome to ask for help.
Id like to commend you on your efforts on creating such a masterpiece for what is undoubtedly one of the BEST games of all time. Do you know how I can play this with my other PC friends? We do not have MK Wii, although we have the Dolphin Emulator Edition via ISO. Please let me know if you have a solution to playing online with other friends on Discord with PC version.
ngl, I think this loses a lot of the artistic cohesion that the game had. The textures are no doubt, an upgrade. And the bloom did not look that great in the original game. But looking at these models with super detailed textures and flat lighting, everything just clashes imo. No shade on the actual modding side of things. And the creators of the HD textures really did do a great job. I just don't feel like it fits Wii much at all. Edit: I'm also really not a fan of the blocky opponent nametags. It's really distracting.

it almost looks like mario kart DS got ported to the wii, which sounds weird to say, but there’s kind of a reason the bloom and lighting effects are there. all the models have flat texturing, and without the lighting and shadows, the appeal is almost gone entirely.
on another note, most of the games assets in terms of characters were basically taken right from mario kart double dash, a game that, while it looks great on the gamecube, looks terrible with mario kart wii's art style by itself, and even double dash with its higher saturation still uses lighting effects a ton to get its art direction the way it is.
overall, i think this isn’t as much of an upgrade, as it basically removes a lot of mario kart wii's appeal by making the game flatter and making the art direction less attractive by removing the lighting effects. some textures do look nice, and credit to the original pack designers for their work, but overall i can’t see this as an improvement to the original and i would prefer that over a lot of this.
I absolutely ADORE this mod, but everything looks so flat I don’t why it looks like that it might be because of the bloom being missing idk
Your channel just showed up in my recommendations and I got curious - You got yourself a new subscriber - Very good video - Keep up the good work :)
yeah same
He didn't make the texture pack. He just applied somebody else's to Dolphin emulator and uploaded their texture pack to his website while taking the credit for it.
@@AnnaBerry590 he already addressed the situation
@@kafiaahmed469 Doesn't matter if people are still mistaking it as his work. He's obligated to actually do something other pinning the comment of the person that called him out.
@@REALMARCHINADER sorry that was my brother, he is not that smart and a mario kart wii fanboy
You made it look worse.
fantastic!! great work
It kinda looks... worst... The higher quality textures for the tracks and and karts don't mix with the low-poly and darkened models of the characters.
Why did Nintendo not just hire this guy to import these graphics for the Mario kart wii tracks
could be good but i dont think they will uodate wii games anymore
@@Sryloth not updating the games but instead of stealing from a mobile game they could have stolen some of them from the earlier games
Awesome work!
Without the bloom, the game looks very Mario Kart DS-ish
What should be next? Remastering SSX Tricky! Xbox/PS2 version.
ngl, I think this loses a lot of the artistic cohesion that the game had.
