Holy shit, I didn't think of this before reading this comment, he does say "Glad I caught you" or something when he sees her along the lake. He was there to off himself but he saw her and decided to give life one last chance. Even though he knew it wouldn't work because he says "Didn't think so." Fuck.
@@thevideocommenter3061 I do think that he was there to off himself, but the last sliver of hope really is realizing Padraic is not as nice as he thought. That's when he truly lost all hope and goes directly to the lake, because as Padraic is telling Colm off at the bar after his donkey died, the policeman walks in and threatens Padraic telling to not let his son sleep at his house. But Dominic isn't at Padraic's house.
She had a good reason for rejecting him if you’ve seen the rest of the movie, and she was very polite about it, considering how he had treated her before she really didn’t need to be that nice to him
In the entire movie, with the most amazing cast, every one, this was the scene that shattered me. He is so vulnerable, and all the hurt and pain in his life is all there, "there goes that dream" Keoghan deserves an Oscar for that 😥
SPOILER ALERT The other heartbreaking scenes for me was how normalized he was to being abused ... It was like another Sunday to him ... The way he spoke to his father in the pub when colin outted the father about the abuse and he quickly denied it in such a soft boyish way like he was absolutely destroyed by his father that made me laugh and ripped my heart apart at the same time. Great movie just simple yet deep
@@RipperCyclotron he killed himself. Knowing no one's ever gonna love him (since his death was after he confessed to Siobhan) and people in his town are just a bunch of fuckers who could care less about him is what pushed him to the edge.
Just this scene makes Barry Keoghan the brilliant actor that he is. Phenomenal acting, all kinds of subtle layers, it really is incredible. Even after seeing this scene for over 20 times, I still get tears in my eyes. Phenomenal.
I think Siobhan represents compassion and empathy, and when she leaves the island it’s doomed. Kind of a broader perspective on war, when we forget those things it never ends up good.
“Disloyalty” is not always a bad thing. In fact, it can be a bigger sacrifice. Padraic remained loyal despite losing everything. Colm lost everything trying to rid Padraic of his loyalty. Siobhan gave Colm the purpose in life he was searching for by leaving the island & starting a meaningful life (by his inspiration) while also solidifying Padraic’s loyalty - him staying despite losing her - the last thing he had left. “Eye, now we’re gettin’ somewhere.”
a masterclass of passing dramatic notes and nuance. STUDYING Barry's brilliance, complexity which seems so effortless and real. Tragic, beautiful. Alive!
Finally got around to seeing the film yesterday. I so wished I had earlier. A truly stellar movie, brilliantly done with an incredible range of performances. But this scene will stay with me forever. I don’t know how an actor manages to portray such a vulnerable, broken young man. Heartbreaking.
All of his scenes were my favorite parts of the movie. Every time he came on screen he stole my heart. He’s so tender- it’s beautiful to watch & also made my heart actually hurt ❤️
The transformation or change, whatever you'd say, from being someone's drinking buddy to confessing his love, the expressions and the pronunciation through his eyes is just unbelievable! 🤯❤
Yes, Colm did a number on the whole town. The very thing he set out to do. Everyone thinking he’s a mad man, but Colm knowing exactly the measures it would take to bring about real change in people. Something he can finally hang his hat on at the end of the day.
In this scene I started off laughing then I got tears in my eyes then I started laughing then I started crying and then I started laughing again all in the space of a minute and a half young Barry so deserves his BAFTA another great Irish actor
Just incredible talent the both of them. Kerry (Siobhan) communicates empathy and compassion in droves despite having only one line in this scene. Barry plays Dominic so beautifully, from his voice to the physical aspects of his character. Incredible talent and incredible scene.
It's crushing to realize we are only alive because our dreams keep us spirited and when we realize they won't come true it's like removing the air you breathe But instead of dying you just became a walking grave of a dead child "The creative adult is the child that survived"
This freaking movie is amazing ! I mean I’ve watched it 7 times give or take and it never gets old the dark undertones , the humor , the acting is top notch everyone in it is killer ! Oscar please I’d like to see it clean up . Martin mcdonagh is an amazing director all his movies are great . Just a genius
This was the first movie I've watched that actually portrays rejection as the painful experience it is instead of just something cringey and to be laughed at. Although looking back on experiences like this we feel embarrassed and stupid, I don't think that's a reason to not acknowledge the pain because when you're in a situation like this it feels like your whole world is falling apart, not to mention the feeling of losing all hope and feeling powerless and humiliated.
It is heartbreaking when we realise that when he finished by saying that I will go over there to do what I was doing , he meant "jumping in the lake to death " 😢😢
To Think about what Barry has gone through in his life, from being in 13 different foster homes. And getting an opportunity to act from an ad he saw on a shop window. What an incredible actor
Dominic is such a sad case he really had it rougher than everybody colm and padriac still had people when they didn't have each other but Dominic had no one his dad beat on him and near enough no one liked him and the only people he liked weren't the people he thought they were. Maybe I'm stupid or wrong but the main them of the movie is loneliness or a lack of togetherness
His acting is the by far the most complex he looked so real. The way he spoke the way he touched his nose every move it was like he’s never acting. He made a slow and dull character so interesting.
This character could have been the wrong kind of eccentric with a different actor, but Barry Keoghan made it so beautiful.
