The Bleak Cabal is interesting because you've got really 3 reactions: the chronically depressed (nothing means anything, so why bother trying?), the chronically optimistic (nothing means anything, so why not try everything!), and the chronically mad (nothing means anything, so ANYTHING MEANS ANYTHING!).
Not that it was ever in question before, anyone who’s been following Brennan since Fantasy High have known this since Bud Cubby first monologued, but I’m glad Brennan goes out of his way every time to make it a point where he stands on the Order vs Chaos alignment chart. Good and Evil have nothing to do with it, the man is just a chaotic little gremlin and I love that for him.
I remember him saying in some interview or adventuring party that he identifies more with law than chaos, he just hates authoritarianism
I may be misremembering though so take that with a grain of salt
i dont know about brennan specifically but yeah, just because the only "order" we've ever seen in our lives has been a fucked up nightmare complex doesn't mean that the idea itself is bad. there's also more than one definition of lawful, governmental state law is not the only law that it is possible to follow. honestly, thinking about the kind of person brennan is, it definitely makes sense that structure and rules are something he might be into. there just isn't an actual altruistic system out there taking care of anyone right now. @@agustinvenegas5238
Brennan's comments on the asymmetry made me think of something I came up with for my planescape games, called the "Grand Lie of Law". Basically, the bad guy of my game believes the great wheel is a paradox, and true balance is impossible:
"As all know, the universe exists in a precarious balance between good, evil, order, and chaos. But… for the universe to be in balance, that implies an order to all things. Balance is by essence the absence of chaos. So with order being the default state of things, it is in fact a contradiction - because that means that law rules over chaos."
That's a good one, imma steal that for one of my theology cults.
Best of all, that could work as some CG anarchists too, so you could have people who are 'good' and 'evil' guided by the same philosophy

I think the true lie is that blance can actully last in the long run. The reason why all cosmic conflicts appear to be in a stalemate is that order has a tiny advantage at the moment, so everything will eventually be thrown out of balance if chaos gains momentum again.
This sounds like a chemical balance, people think balance is static, but in fact it's dynamic and always changing, good concept you came up with.
Thats very similar to how George Lucas describes the "Balance of the Force" in Star Wars. A lot of people think balance means an even playing field between Light and Dark. However, from how Lucas describes the Dark Side as a corruption and a cancer on the Force as a whole, balance means a complete elimination of the Dark Side and total dominance of the Light.

When I was in like 4th grade I came up with the concept of “universe chili” which put forward that the entire universe was basically a big pot of chili for beings of a much higher dimension. When the heat death comes that means that it has been suffused with enoguh energy to be fully cooked. When it collapses back into a singularity that’s it being consumed. So I’m extremely intrigued by the cakers and whenever I inevitably run a game I will be incorporating them heavily

So much nostalgia comes to mind because I think I shared the same level of excitement that Brenden exhibits from when he played it back when it debuted … totally fell in love with the weird ideology’s and the supreme power of belief… super nerdy but super fun 🤩
I want to see Brennan run a Planescape campaign where the characters are basically Eleanor (Free League), Chidi (Fraternity of Order), Jason (Hands of Havoc), and Tahani (uhh... Cakers?) taking on the Harmonium.
Planescape Torment was one of my favorite games growing up and I have always wanted to do a campaign in that world. Loving that it is getting attention here.

I like to imagine these Planescape videos are edited together from footage of Brennan sitting in a room by himself talking for a week. They opened the door, he walked in and saw the box set and just sat down with it and started talking. They unsealed the room a week later and he was still going; they took the cameras and left, but legend says he's still there talking about the planes.
How new is the "Everything is Cake" faction? Because either they're memes...or they're PROTO memes.

He didn't go through them all. The full list of "ascendant" factions for 5e Planescape is: Athar, Bleak Cabal, Doomguard, Fated, Fraternity of Order, Hands of Havoc, Harmonium, Heralds of Dust, Mercykillers, Mind's Eye, Society of Sensation and Transcendent Order.
Only the Cakers use having cake as a selling point, so my allegiance is set.

I know that the likelihood that Brennan will see this is nil, but I desperately want him to answer: how do you run a planescape campaign? How do you hit the vibe?
I've played Planescape: Torment and loved it. I want to make a game for my players that gets the same sense. But I need direction on how to get there.

I am genuinely sad the Free League got demoted. That plus the Xaositects vanishing and the Revolutionary League getting turned into a parody of revolutionary philosophy is just depressing.

@@josephwilliams5292 I mean, on same grounds I can make argument about Limbo. If the planes "aware of" only themselves, then Limbo would also not tolerate such law strongholds. If planes "aware of" themselves from outside, then both planes must constantly fight each other to make situation symmetrical/asymmetrical. In this particular situation it's just sophistry (though I think unintended), where the argument starts by describing the Mechanicus, then describing the Limbo, then describing why Limbo tolerates "bubbles of law". So it's seems like there are just two describing of planes themselves, but essentially response of Mechanicus in this confrontation is omitted. But if you do not omit this response, then most likely it will simply lead to a loop and therefore paradox.
@@Carpetman77777 the issue is that mechanus could theoretically do it, but any attempt by mechanus to create symmetry by allowing pockets of chaos would create less overall order, since it would increase the size of the largest perfect unit to a pair of planes, but would decrease the size of the smallest perfectly ordered unit to however small the distance between two bubbles of chaos in mechanus is. Mechanus as it is now is like a large perfect crystal, and you could potentially make a much larger but less perfect crystal if you introduced pockets of disorder to mirror Limbo, but that would still be more overall chaos because of how much disorder introducing those small pockets of chaos would create.
Sorry if that doesn’t make sense, I’ve spent a lot more time studying crystallography than I’d like.
@@josephwilliams5292 I mean I argue only with Brennan's argument. Again, on the same ground with crystal analogy I can say that Limbo allowing pockets of law will result in less "imperfect" crystal overall, though Limbo strives to be as imperfect as possible.
I see pocket of law in Limbo (created by Githzerai) simply as interpretation of that "infinite randomness" soon or late will contain everything, even the most ordered and complex structure. It's not about self-awareness of planes.
Even more if in random sequence of digits you would specifically avoid the "sequential" sequences, you may come to that "123456789" is actually the most entropic/chaotic choice of all.
@@Carpetman77777 yeah, it’s essentially the difference between mechanus wanting a library of perfectly written books and limbo containing infinite monkeys with infinite typewriters. Limbo must necessarily contain some seemingly ordered pockets, because it’s not impossible for “order” to arise randomly, it’s just unlikely

The Bleak Cabal are just nihilists, they believe the only meaning in life is what you make of it; not as outright evil as the Doomguard, who are more "if everyone's gonna die anyway, why don't we just get it over with now?*
The Dustmen are basically goth Buddhists, they're all about trying to remove all desire and escape the cycle of rebirth (except in their version we're already dead, stopping the cycle is just dying for realsies)

I love Brennan, but the coverage of the factions in this book/boxset is terrible.
The lore fluff is fine, but it's been on the internet for free on fan forums for almost 2 decades. Where is the actionable game mechanics for the Planescape Factions? Why doesn't Planescape get the same treatment that Ravnica guilds and Theros gods got?
I know they're going light on content as they are winding down 5e and ramping up for 5e+ whatever, but come on. Ravnica and Theros gave us 5 to 10 pages on each of their Factions with tables, players options, and guides on how to run each group as allies, villains, quest givers, and PC club houses. Where is this treatment for the Sigil Factions?
People complained for months on end about the lack of ship combat rules in Spelljammer. How do people not see that Planescape has the exact same problem?
Give us more than "Sigil is the one place in the multiverse where the alignment system holds no sway over the behavior of creatures and people... except for these 12 to 15 clubhouses which are fanatically devoted to one specific interpretation of one specific subdivision of the alignment chart."
This is the part that makes me feel like Sigil is neat, but has also been eclipsed by 5e's *better* high-fantasy, zany, faction-driven urban campaign setting: Ravnica.
Like, I don't think I have to justify that the factions are better in Ravnica. None of these people are half as fun as a cult of demon-worshiping satirist murder-carnies, undead ghost-and-vampire mafia with a church aesthetic, fungus zombie elves who run the soup kitchens, or even the full-plate-armor hippies, and half of Sigil's factions are very 90s edgy in a way that's not that interesting. Ravnica *can* have that, but it doesn't feel like Ravnica *needs* the edgelords as a crutch. Even Ravnica's Cops factions feel like they've got more going on.
But I also find alignment boring, so of course I'd rather take the setting that doesn't even pretend to do that.
Ravnica is a too try hard wacky be all that interesting. I'll take the philosophy soup intermezzo of the universe that is Sigil anyday.
They really did rename/reflavour the Revolutionary League to Hands of Havoc. God the description is cringe af, reads like a 101 class.

@@VandalAudi If that is the case I would be wrong but you could 100% be correct. Revolutionary league and Chaosmen are both missing from this clip. I get my book today so I can let you know if you're correct.
Looks like they combined the Revolutionary League and the Xaositects into one faction. Which is interesting considering all 3 of the Law factions (Fraternity, Harmonium and Mercykillers) are still around.
Revolutionary league is a minor faction now, in the section of the book about Undersigil
