Theon had one of the best deaths of the show in my opinion, the remaining starks and his sister had forgiven him for his actions, he gave his all to protect bran and was taken out by the embodiment of the long night and unknowingly gave Arya the time to come in and end the war, a true hero of the seven kingdoms in his final moments, RIP Theon! The whole of Westeros will sing songs in your memory.
I agree that was my like number one death scene on the show, the music, the resolution of his story, it's perfect. This show never stops impressing by doing things that you totally see coming and don't expect it to be all that great because it's predictable, but then they just do it so f'ing perfectly that it doesn't matter how predictable it was.

Can we talk about the ultimate sacrifice the unsullied gave? They looked death in the eye and still held heir ground to protect everyone else while they retreated
Grey Worm waiting and hoping that some of his men would follow him back, but they held the line. It was really sad when he realized he had to set the stakes leaving them on the other side.
I like to think the Unsullied have been waiting all this time for their moment of ultimate repentance for the children they killed in front of their mothers.
If you look again during the retreat some rows of Unsullied retreat too, while their fellows close rows. But somebody has to keep the front for the retreat and even to being able to light the trenches. Anyway, once the Castle falls on the hands of the Night King, since the battle of Winterfell was totally lost and even John Snow was ready to die, there are no more troops on screen except the "heroes" including Grey Worm. So it's unclear if any Unsullied survived...
@@Haegemon In the preview for the next episode it shows a bunch of unsullied marching.
They all died protecting the retreat. Only Greyworm and some Unsullied survived after the trench. Afterwards who knows how many are still left.
I thought it sucked that the Dothraki were quickly eliminated.

@Ragnarok He knew he was a dead man when Bran thanked him...and he still charged directly at death. It was an amazing scene and his ultimate redemption.
Ragnarok theon was such a coward from the torture he endured for so long. He took the situation into his own hands and chose to go out not by waiting to be killed but screaming and giving it all he had.
i loved this epsiode while watching it, then hated it when my brain started realising all the issues it had
i figured after the opening cavalry charge that if i wanted to enjoy the rest at all i needed to shut my brain off and just enjoy the spectacle, and even then i spent half the episode with my head in my hand

I get that the last season wasn't perfect, but I honestly loved this episode. LOVED. And I always defend it.
The story about Dany going forward is really cool but the execution could have been better. They also rushed the last episode. I still think it's a decently solid season.

It would have had a similar impact on me if I hadn’t immediately knew that’s what would happen when they charged
that was the most stupidest thing to do, when you have your cavalry you dont charge the enemy straight when the enemy is 20x bigger then you. you use them more smart, maybe a pierce flank from the sides or maybe not use horse and defend the walls instead of attacking in open field with against bigger undead army. there were so many flaws and plot holes in this episode and to have the night king die like that after 7 seasons hype was bad. weak villain ending. Just my opinion, and more should have died, this is game of thrones. Think the writers have become soft for making people angry. But i agree that there are soo many beautiful and great, cool battle scenes, to bad for weak writing, setup on my part.
It was definitely a stupid move tactically, but it fits with what we know of Dothraki and how they fight so I wasn’t bothered by it
Personally it broke me when Dany was cradling Jorah and then how the dragons came down, it was almost like they were simultaneously comforting Daenarys and saluting Jorah for his service, I cried so much.

@@0mnicide Think of it as the last 100 pages of the Lord of the Rings, the bit after Sauron died; except instead of the scouring of the Shire you get the decider for the iron throne. (If Lord of the Rings was shot as 73 episodes the last 2 or 3 would also be after the final confrontation/climax). The last episodes should be about the human costs of what has happened, it seems like a natural conclusion to me.
@@davidjones5333 I don't think that's the problem that most people have with this conclusion. The problem I have with it is that the show spent 7 full seasons hyping up the dead army, making it seem like Bran, Jon, the Night King, the Lord of Light, and the Targaryens/Dragons were all somehow connected. The show told us that humanity would be pushed to the brink of extinction because most people would fall before the Others. The Long Night ended up lasting an hour and a half, and the ancient evil known as the Night King, who was introduced around season 4 and continuously shown to be plotting or working towards some goal, is killed in a frankly pathetic way by someone that IMHO has not earned the right to be the one to kill him (in the show at least) nor should it have been possible for Arya to even reach the Night King undetected. To say that this ending to a 8-season long conflict is disappointing, especially to book readers that know that the show is the only ending they'll ever get, is a massive understatement. We as an audience just end up getting absolutely no answers to the tons of questions that the show voluntarily set up.
@@Mrthekingize To be fair: Jon, Bran and the Night King were all connected. Jon and Bran, (and indeed Arya and Sansa) were members of the family that created the wall in the first place and defeated the Others originally. The book series may eventually give some more answers on the relationship between the Lord of Light and the Others, but so far it has been far more vague than the show; which has given far more answers. The Azhor Azai prophecy was fulfilled in the show: Daenerys and Jon both fulfilled the criteria for this prophecy. If you were expecting this to lead to a fight between one character with a literal flaming sword and the Night King, then I would question why given that prophecies in both show and books are always been deliberately vague and are never fulfilled in expected ways.
The show did not say that humanity would be pushed to the brink of extinction, it suggested that the political struggles were trivial in respect to the larger threat that could end all life. This was true; the WW were a threat that had the potential to end all life, if they were not stopped at Winterfell then nobody else possessed the weaponry, or knowledge, or would have the numbers of people to stop them. This battle saved humanity. Defeating them clearly came at a devastating cost for all involved, a cost that was made clear on screen.
The Night King was never suggested to be plotting towards any goal other than killing everybody. This is the same with the Others in the books (where their motivations are explored even less), essentially they are the representation of death and there have never been any suggestions that their goals are more complicated than ending all life and dominating the world. The books may well add more to this, but if they do not then it wouldn't bother me; plenty of fantasy stories never flesh out the motivations of the supernatural threat, and in this story this aspect was always secondary to the political machinations.
Obviously some people feel that this conflict was ended too abruptly, but again you have to ask what the hell were they expecting? This was literally the longest battle ever filmed in any medium, longer even than Pelennor Fields in the Lord of the Rings. It was filled with tension and the stakes were presented as high throughout; multiple key characters died during it (including view point characters), and the threat of the others was never trivialised.
What questions were set up that were not answered? I understand that you may not have liked the answers, or felt they were too simplistic, but I can't think of any that were ignored.
only for that entire 8 seasons worth of built up storyline to be reduced to a plot device for dany to conveniently lose most of her army and weaken her to facilitate her 3 episode heel turn. the Night King is the biggest macguffin in the history of modern television after this episode

Why stay in a bad position and lose many soldiers when you can retreat to a better one to (hopefully) win. That is a simple tactic they would have been taught.
If they put there army behind the trench and defensive battlements, they wouldn't need to protect the retreat. 🙄

Melisandre's magic has a price. For things like that to happen, she requires sacrifice. I think her final magical showing was the cause of self-sacrifice.
I think you're right- looking at the sequences from this episode, I think that the priests and priestesses of the Order of Light, like Mel and Thoros, have a limited magical influence to use in the world, like a gas tank that can slowly recover given time, so resurrecting specific dead and lighting blades ablaze isn't that hard, as long as they are given time to recover, or using specific sacrifices as proxy. But Mel lit the weapons of 40 k dothraki, far surpassing her gas tank of magical energy - which is why she told Davos when she entered the castle not to bother, as she was already dead anyway. The second thing she did, lighting the trench, one could see how nervous she was and how long it took, nervous because she knew that she was out of magic - meaning that what she did was the same thing Thoros did to Barric the first time he died, she was praying for a miracle - also explaining why she looked so shocked when the fire lit, she didn't expect anything to happen. The last thing of her magic to disappear was her glamour veil, where we see her gemstone indicating that she had not a single drop of magic left, stopping to glow.

It's also a case of prophesy/purpose -- she had "known" that she was to serve her purpose at the battle against the undead and then die. Her life had already been extended via magic for longer than she should have lived; she served as the Lord of Light had commanded, and died as he saw fit. That's an important point/distinction, as well.

Man I don't know what it is, but something about the music that kicks in during the scene towards the end when Jorah stands back up just gets me. I rewatch that specific scene just so I can hear it, the music overall towards the end was just so damn good.

@@lancejedrickmaniquiz7547 That's because "Light of the Seven" was indeed one of the themes woven into that particular piece of music. It comes in really strongly on violin or cello. But the music in the episode was just awesome and deserves particular mention.
The last scene where Melissandre just walks by while she dies its amazing. Such a piece of art. The music is just perfect.
It's like having Endgame, then next movie is Civil War...
Game OF Thrones. The main story is who sits on the Throne, the white walkers were a side story that's time has finished. Even if it was surprising.
@@TheCulturalBomb The first book is called the game of thrones because robert died and all the yada yada that joffrey isn't his kid etc. the book series is called A song of ice and fire. Jon is ice and fire, and it had no impact what so ever, yes he got everyone together but he did so without anyone knowing he is actually Aegon Targaryen, which would have probably stopped everyone from listening to him lol. The main story was never about the Iron Throne, at least that's how it feels when you read the books.
And yes this is not the books, but the first seasons clearly are full on book adaptions, they just took the more catchy name.
@@TheCulturalBomb The series is actually called "A Song of Ice and Fire." Game of Thrones is just the title of the first book. And I heavily disagree GRRM intended the white walkers to be just a side story. The prologue to the whole series starts with them. I expected them to go out in episode 5 or something like that. D&D wrote them off in episode 3, in the most anticlimactic way possible. How disappointing.

Jons' plan was to get to the Night King in the Godswood but that Zombie Dragon had his path blocked. The plan was always to lure the Night King into a trap.

Episode was thrilling and quite the work of art. However, when placed into the context of the army of the dead being this massive buildup since the very first scene of the entire show, I can’t help but be left thinking, “That was it?”
Were they the build up? To me they were just like a hurricane or a plague, an ominous threat but not the real story.
@@npe9483 The series literally talked about the real war being in the north, not the iron throne. They didn't just say "Winter is coming" throughout the series for nothing.
Like they said, episode 70 of 73 in their 4th battle against the dead, isn’t anticlimactic. For and hour and twenty minutes It was a last stand, lose this and it’s over.

I think it was there to show the brutality of the world, not that the white walkers are the threat. The real threat is given in the title - its Game of Thrones. Not Game of Night Kings.

@@xxdavecz3811 Reminder killing a white walker can annihilate the part of the army they are controlling (maybe not with the NK around though) but Jon could have told them about that and keeping an eye out for them. It wouldn't have been bad writing at all just them trying to end this as quickly as possible.
Guys the battle was fantastic i was just expecting some action from white walkers , the way they ended episode 2 with Walkers on there horses they looked bad ass . But i love this show and loved the battle.

whoever devised the battle plan was absolutelly incompetent. Sending about 6k light cavalary into 100k soldiers that you can't even see? Catapults in first line who fired only 1 salvo? stuipid as hell.
They should have range markers on fire as boltons did, trenches should have been even before the soldiers.
at least support the cavalry charge with one dragon (bad idea to send them out against an unknown foe in the first place, should have been waiting either side of the battlefield to charge in after dragons did big damage), catapults probably should've been behind the walls if possible, if not behind the moat, potentially more than one moat, more obstacles on battlefield to funnel enemies into more manageable groups, range markers, and a lot more god damn archers, potentially drench the ground with oil in areas to start many more smaller fires on the field of battle, have oil/tar on the wall to pour down on walkers and then set them alight, Jon Snow is a Night's Watchman, not a general, 2 battles have shown that's for damn sure. Think Ramsay Bolton would've done better, alas he's dog turd.

I partially agree. I personally LOVED the episode and I get what Eric and shane are saying, but right now I don't have a problem when this happened. I just think we have to wait and see how the rest of the season plays out before we all start complaining about it.
The thing is just on a sheer geography and time thing, it had to be Night King first. They were way too close even just with the destruction of the wall for them to go to Kings Landing, sort all that, and then come back up and defend Winterfell.
And I don't agree with people who feel he could have won and we still had people left to go south. This, to me, was always a do or die situation for Jon and the army. They either defeat the Night King or everyone dies.
And we were never going to get 3 feature-length episodes of Cersei vs the Night King lol
It is too bad the Night King was suffering from "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome". Otherwise he could have instantly crushed Arya's throat with his super human spear throwing strength.
The Night King is powerful but I think the magical spear did all work. Any normal human would kill a Dragon with that spear.

Theon's death is the one that really hurt for me. He was my favourite character since I was 17, I latched onto him during a very confusing time in my life and he was the one who got me into writing. Alfie Allen is probably the best actor on this show, his character has changed so so so so much through the seasons and he was always amazing! His death was very well done and beautiful, but I really wish he had a chance to live now that he had finally found himself. Thank you, Alfie! Thank you, Theon! I'll love you now and always!

I just love those 30 seconds of emotional rollercoaster of silently despaired defeat, Arya flying in to save the day, getting stopped and about to be killed, and making a comeback win anyway, and all of it being perfectly reflected in the reactors' faces
Eric is definitely a book reader and prophecy follower. You could tell he was most surprised/confused by Arya giving the final blow and Bran basically being useless.
Keep in mind that this are their first thoughts, it could change once they've had time to soak it in.
Even if he is, Azor Ahai is only prophecised to "lead the people against a darkness". Nothing states the prince that is promised is the one who kills the Night King. The Night King doesn't even exist (that we know of yet) in the books. Also, the whole thing with prophecies is that they are vague and can be interpreted in many ways, and are hardly ever literal.

Jon united armies from all walks of life that hated each other to fight the night king, he was the visionary and peacemaker that could look beyond petty differences and bring people together to survive the Armageddon. He is Azora Hai, he just didn't have some cliche duel with the night king to end it. George RR always said he hated those kind of endings with one guy saving the day with a single sword stab because he is the chosen one. He did the hardest part, he got the north to accept wildlings, dothraki and unsullied and even enemy houses to help. Something no one else seemed capable of doing, Sansa, for instance, was awful at it.

I agree with Eric 100%. I wanted more of the show revealing how it was Arya and only Arya that could have done what needed to be done. I feel like they sacrificed an amazing storyline for the sake of shock factor.
From a lore and prophecy standpoint,yeah I wish we could've seen how Arya was the one who did that,although Melissandra saying "brown eyes,green eyes,blue eyes"should've told us. But,from a location and logical standpoint,ONLY Arya could've killed the Night King. Everyone else AT THAT MOMENT was TOO BUSY fighting or dead.
There's no shock factor. Arya had been guessed by many people for a long while to be the one to actually kill the Night King.

I am not saying whether it actually worked (the shock value); but in the behind-the-scenes video the show runners specifically explain that they do not reveal what Arya is doing after she runs from the room FOR THE SAKE of surprising the audience when she appears behind the NKs shoulder. They chose not to give us her storyline for no other reason than just an attempt to shock the audience.
My big problem with the surprise for the sake of a surprise (disregarding the effectiveness of said surprise) is that this show has leaned on this tactic more and more in the last few seasons. And a lot of the times they use it we end up sacrificing good story or character moments for the sake of the surprise.
Ex. Arya tells Jon in S8E1 that Sansa is the smartest person she knows. This comment is because of the LF situation in S7 and how they worked as a pack to resolve it. However, we as an audience never got to see the sisters figure out that he was manipulating them and thus outsmarting him. And the reason we didn’t get to see that is because the show placed more importance on having a surprise moment. Two sisters who never got along and are reunited and then have a very serious rift - shouldn’t it be more important for us to see their coming together again as a family and how they worked together? Because I love these characters I just feel a little short-changed when I miss major parts of their journeys. IMO.

Melisandre's gem was cracked when she took it off. She literally used all her magic to do what she did, and didn't have enough to keep herself alive.

Foxfalco Leon we saw in previous seasons that she was very old and that magic was keeping her alive. In the books she’s something like 300 years old. So there’s definitely some magic involved in keeping her alive and certainly some sort of magic in lighting all those swords. I think it’s a reasonable interpretation that wherever it came from that she used it all up.

The ultimate message of the show since season 1 was that all the political intrigue, wars and greed for the throne was a waste of time in face of the REAL threat that was the Night King and his army, and they just discarded him with a snap of a finger. The reason why ICE and FIRE (Jon & Dany) was brought together in the end was so they could face the real threat. You can't just build something up so perfectly and ruin it in the end just for shock value.
And they did. They faced the real threat.

Half the fans, the story is about defeating the night king and the ancient evil, the other half of the fans, the story is about the politics and the iron throne. I guess it was inevitable that one of the half’s would be disappointed somewhat.
I was on the ancient evil half and feel like it was kind of anticlimactic. But I did still greatly enjoy it.

My only major gripe is that 'The Long Night' really didn't last that long. I think if this season had more episodes and we had some more scenes of other cities and castles in the North falling it would have been more effective.
I never understood why HBO decided to give less episodes to their literal golden goose, but I guessed something like this would happen, so I kept my expectations not too high and I enjoyed the episode

Her entire purpose was to set the trench on fire and buy them 5 minutes before the wights made a bridge. Dam poor women's legacy didn't help much eh.

Night was Not surprised by Arya, he knew she was coming, easily spun and caught her. Her great stealth did not matter against a greenseer. But he was too arrogant to bother to watch it all, he knew once she was in his hands, it was over. You only get one chance to fail to stop Arya.

The Walkers are conduits for the NK's power. That's all they are. They keep the Wights moving while he is away. He was able to see Arya because one of the Walkers "saw" her.

Like, don't get me wrong, I understand it, and it's probably what I would be doing in his place too. But I at least wouldn't insist on being put up front with the best warriors available. He should've stayed in the crypt like they said.

Except that Smaug was not killed by any guy, was killed by a person with a bow of redemtion that was dedicated to the failure of his father at the time of killing Smaug.
Having that character kill the unstoppable Smaug with the arrow that his father hit but did not finish the task, closes a character arc in a clear way, making him earn the respect of his people and redeeming the name of his father by confirming that he did not fail the shot, but the arrow did not have enough force.
Here we have Theon's chance to redeem himself completely by helping to kill the King of the Night, of Jon to finish off the enemy who fought several times and never won, but we have Arya jumping after an entire army screaming from the back of the King of the Night and killing him finally.

8 seasons of build up......from the very first scene of the very first episode, this was driven into our heads as being THE thing, nothing else matters, all the squabbles between lords and kings is pointless against the menacing threat of imminent death.......and it's over in 1 battle and, in totality, amounts to no more than a plot device for Dany to lose a good portion of her strength, facilitating her 2 episode heel turn

Only moment i've cried at this episode was theon's death. I'm not even sure why, I had other emotional reactions to other people that died but Theon's was probably the most important of the episode. He's a character that was in the first episode, almost like a main character and it really hit me cuz I had been alternating what I called him reek or theon depending on his actions and I just felt like this was a definitive moment where he died as theon stark not greyjoy or reek. I think this is a real mess of a comment but duck it

@@hijack69 I was too confused why the giant held her up to his eye so she could stab him. I would have expected a resurrected corpse of a giant to just stomp her at first sight. Playing with your prey and menacingly stare at it does not sound like a quality a zombie should have.
I feel like they should not have written that giant in there only to give her that moment, she was badass way before this. even a regular death, or maybe defending her men heroically, would have been amazing, especially for a little girl to do. But this only made me question the integrity of the story. Same for some of the other scenes. The most on the nose one: how did Jon escape when he was surrounded by the dead? It would have taken 1 second for them to kill him. Next scene he is somewhere else running.
I couldn't help but notice and think about these things and it took me right out of the experience. The episode started strong though, and amazing directing for most of it.

I love the discussion! Just a couple things I wanted to reinforce/point out:
1. Like a couple of you said they had to kill the night king in this episode. If the NK made it past winterfell, no one could stop him. Plus the Starks are the only ones with lineage tied to the Wights, and the NK could be a Stark. Winterfell was the last resort, I mean it's even in the name, its where winter, fell.
2. A stark had to kill the NK, if it was someone else it wouldn't have been satisfying at all. Only Bran, Jon, and Arya make sense. If it was Bran it probably would've been super lame because he would've had to use some weird power that wouldn't be satisfying to watch. Plus if Bran could even kill him he would've done it a while ago. Even though Jon has the most ties to the NK I'd like to argue that there's no way it could be him. So far the NK has proven to be smart enough to never put himself in a dangerous spot. Much like Rob stark wouldn't fight Jamie, the NK would never fight Jon, and Jon isn't the smartest or stealthiest warrior. Arya is the perfect person to kill the NK, she checks all of these boxes.
3. People are saying the show is pretty much over now, but I disagree. The show is called Game of Thrones, not Game of Life. The whole purpose of the show is the fight for the iron throne, and the politics behind it.
Edit: 4. Also prophecies are very loose, and George RR Martin says multiple times that they can be loose or simply not true. You could still argue Jon is the prince that was promised since he brought everyone together, or that the prophecy was simply a human fallacy.
5. The argument that Jon was brought back for nothing isn't true. The only reason Arya went to winterfell was because Jon was there. Plus Beric died a bunch of times just to be there when Arya needed him.

The name of the show is misleading as that is really only the name of the first fucking book. I don't know why they actually chose to name the entire series that but that is not the title of the franchise, which is A Song of Ice and Fire. I am not necessarily against Arya killing the Night King, but the way they did it was just terrible. She has not really had any real connection to this storyline, but Jon has been fighting in the north for most of the entire show, he earned some type of confrontation. They could at least have had him face of against the Night King and had Arya stealth kill him or assist him in some way. The fact that she just happens to show up out of nowhere, skip over a bunch of useless white walker generals without being noticed is just idiotic and too cheap a win to me.
And for me this was the plot line that I found the most important, I have anticipated the final showdown against the real threat of the show and now that has been completely ruined. Apperantly the threat in the north was not really that important, I guess in the end it is just a stupid plot point to wipe out the army that Danerys had with her. There is also no point in rewatching the show either when I know it will end so poorly. And the reason why I don't really care about Cersi and the threat she poses is that she is not a threat to humanity as a whole, she will eventually die anyways and life will go on. But if the White Walkers win they would truly kill everyone. To have that threat just brushed over so fast and so easily feels like a big slap in the face....
One thing I thought this episode did perfectly was create tension in the first few minutes. Everything up to the first wight attack was paced so well.
In my opinion the scariest thing in this whole episode is the first contacts with the dead. Especially when the Dothraki hit them, cuz the look of terror on the first dothraki that sees them right before it cuts to the bird eye view of the fires dying is just perfection. It's total and utter shock and fear captured in an instant and then the birds eye as well as daenaery's reaction compound it.
That's because of dreadful planning, I outlined this a few days ago.
I would say that no plan survives contact with the enemy, especially when you are facing an enemy as objectively horrifying and unnatural as the wights

I agree with Eric pretty much. It was amazing from a production standpoint, but the story elements didn't do much for me.
MrNinja0418 the only underwhelming thing for me is that The Night King didn't have a twist, it was as simple as he wanted revenge on mankind. But I loved that Arya killing him was hinted back in season 3 and it wasn't just something that was introduced in season 8 for the sake of it.
@@FreeBandz658 Arya killing him was just right. She, the best assassin in the room, should have been in the godswood from the start, for the literal planned ASSASSINATION.
But the logistics are what bothers me. First she kills wights left and right, then she fears a few of them. Then she walks of somewhere in Winterfell.
Then she sneaks past the White Walkers when just some drop of blood alerted wights. It's bombastic, but not as planned and carefully thought out as i prefer the show. Still, great episode.
Considering that there's still 3 90 minute episodes left, I have a feeling that things aren't going to be as simple
The story made no sense this entire episode. Arya killing NK is FINE however the method in which she did it was weird. Undead could hear her blood dripping but the NK and his knights didn't notice her coming? Come on.

They heard the blood. They didn't hear her.
She is so silent, death can not hear her coming. That's why she was able to stealthily attack him. Had the walker not notice the wind she produced as she went for the kill, no one would have noticed. As for why the wind was a thing at all, she had gotten as close as she could. Stealth would get her no further. She needed a speedy surprise attack.
The signs were there. If they showed any more than what they did, it would have ruined the surprise. They pretty much spelled it out with the Red Witch's words and I was still surprised. I knew she left to go kill the Night King, but was so focused on everything else, I forgot.
Melisandre took off her necklace to die because she once said: "I've been wanting to die a long time ago." She's old, she's seen everything, and did everything she could do.
Now that she has served her purpose, she has nothing to live for anymore, so she can now finally rest. It's a fitting end.
Finally watching this and the rage from this season is just coming right back.

The battle was horrific and glorious, the director should be given an award. The writing was stupid, plot armor for so many characters (in a show that isn't supposed to have that, especially during the "apocalypse") and making Jon and Bran useless, and really going against the spirit of the show. Watch Angry Jo talk about it, he sums it up best. The writers are destroying a beautiful show and book series in the last season.
Without bran and jon everybody would be dead by now. They played huge roles in protecting the living.
The battle was a visual spectacle, true, but from a logistics stand point, it was dumb. Tf do you have light calvary mindlessly charge a threat you can't even see? Your strongest asset, wasted just so you can have an epic shot of all the swords going out. And why, of WHY is your army outside your trench? Its like you want them to get mowed down. Why only have one trench? Why not two? There's over 70-80k of people in Winterfell, and you're telling me they couldn't dig another trench to stifle the wave of the dead, then send your soldiers to pick off those that manage to get through? Holy shit, its like the battle was planned by a six year old. There are so many great battle strategies in history. Why didn't DnD use any of them? Cause MuH EpIc fLaMInG sWOrD ChArGe.

@@TheaTheGenius My guess would be that they didn't have enough time to devise a good battle plan. Give them a few days and they might have come up with a pretty good plan. Something along the lines of what you said,along with "GET THE NON-COMBATANTS OUT OF WINTERFELL". Instead,they only had a few hours. So they did the best with the time they had.
The Night King was in the same spot as Jon Snow in episode 8.1 when Jon said "HOW DID YOU SNEAK UP ON ME" cool

This might be in the "so bad it's good category", if you don't think about how 8 years led up to this comical moment. Well maybe the Cersei storyline will hold a few surprises and end a little better. Such a shame though. I wish they could redo GoT from season 5 with different writers. Everything except the writing is brilliant in this show.

@@percussionfellow6168 I dont see what the point would be, other than to defend yourself from one of the few valerian swords. Otherwise, its just a waste. Steel would do amazingly in protecting you from steel and iron arms. Sure, blunt weapons and polearms will be dangerous, but the same could be said for valerian armour.
