  • Restoration of upright acoustic bass 7952 and conversion to a 5 string, August 2012 to March 2013. Music written by Henry Mancini for the Peter Gunn TV series. It's a laminated bass that might be a Kay made in 1940. Kay made a 5-string too that may be about the same on top, back and bass bar strength as the 4-string.

Kay sill makes 5 String Basses & they've done some details for tonal enhancement.

The 5 String Bass eliminates the need to use an extension when playing lower notes.

I have a 5 String Fender Bass & the frets really show us where the notes are. Jazz guys love extended range Basses cause they can improvise more with more strings, and so do metal guys, and even Gospel guys. The 5th String makes transposing a whole lot easier especially on Church Gigs.

I've been playing that bass often and it's held up very well so far.

It's such a strong little Bass. Turns out whoever built it must have put alot of effort into it.

D'addario Medium Tension 3/4 Size Helicore Orchestral Double Bass Strings plus a Matching Low B will give you optimal playability because the thinner gauge & stranded steel core will facilitate good playing technique plus they're flexible

WOW! Amazing restoration! I'm personally doing one right now, converting a 3-stringed to a 4-stringed double bass. One question: weren't you 'scared' that the double bass won't resist the tension and stress of 5 strings when compared to 4?
    Thanks

No you weren't scared at all, it's helpful to use lighter gauge strings so that way the tension wouldn't be too much.

Kay made a 5-string called a Chubby Jackson that was about the same bass.
