Me when I'm walking home at 3am through a rough part of town as a shortcut home and thinking "whatever happens happens, whether I go home safe or I die tonight it's all down to fate"
The best part about this game’s soundtrack (consisting of the hit song: painfully loud high-frequency droning) is that it’s nigh unforgettable! You’re guaranteed to be subtly reminded of it, as your ears continue to ring at the same pitch for hours after listening. When I’m seventy-three and can no longer make out the songbirds’ wonderful singing from my front porch. I’ll know just what smashin’, rockin’ soundtrack to blame! Thanks, Stay Out of the House! What a progressive work of genius in video game music! It’s kind of like jazz. It’s not about the notes that you do hear. It’s about the notes that you definitely won’t be able to in the future. I’m all on board with the brand new hearing damage genre!
The only thing scary about Puppet Combo games is the risk of hearing loss. Between Night Shift and Nun massacre having ear drum blasting screams and the constant assault of high pitched ringing here I wouldn't be surprised if they were all deaf by 40

59:32 I love that this description applies to literally every traditional survival horror and metroidvania game ever, but in jerma's mind only Granny rippoffs have this structure. Sort of also shows how games like RE and SH strike a balance of puzzle solving and searching for items without feeling obtuse or annoying compared to jumpscare indie horror trash.
The difference is the good games in that style have you do extra things or avoid reasonable hazards from point a to point b. Fatal Frame 2 has some of the longest, painful backtracking for a single item or locked door, but it's enjoyable because spooky ghosts have been introduced as spooky ghosts that want to hurt a girl that can barely run.
@@super8bitvideos Yeah, but the Clock Tower games and Haunting Ground also do the whole "1 persistent enemy" thing and it's way more effective than shit like Granny and other Puppet Combo games (or even stuff like outlast) because there's much more to it than just "run and hide for 10 minutes" breaking all sense of pacing and progression.
@@warbossgegguz679 - When you say "breaking all sense of pacing and progression" that alone ruins the idea of a survival horror. When SOOTH was in progress, the killer's AI was made that it'll react like a serial killer would (Reacts to light, sound, and actively takes other routes during chases to cut the player off by surprise) and it'll then actively search for the player in a area it knows they're in. Other than that, if you're not a fan of hiding for a while to wait for the killer to wonder off, the game just isn't your type I reckon.
@@syrupsnake302 I agree, but I want to specify that I enjoy stealth in Survival Horror games when done in a way that doesn't feel monotonous or limited. I've referenced Forbidden Siren 1 & 2 multiple times and those are primarily stealth games. It's also just far more varied than a game with a single pursuer would be. It's a whole village of unkillable enemies with varying quirks and abilities + different characters with unique attributes each chapter. Combat is even an option for some characters, but since the shibito are corpses reanimated by ghosts they always eventually get back up since they can't die. The fact you actually get similar options is what makes me feel like Murder House is still Puppet Combo's best shot at a survival horror game. It's very Clock Tower 1/2 meets RE1-CV. The writing is... variable in quality, but mechanically it's the most sound and interesting imo. Shame it's so short. I'd also like to note that I do actually own and patronize Puppet Combo and TortureStar. I own all of their steam libraries because I see potential, I just want them to improve.
@@warbossgegguz679 - Yeah I see what you mean with it being monotonous, search, run from killer, hide, repeat. But with limited I'm not sure if you're referring to A. Not enough items to help manage easily. B. Very little alternatives towards the story throughout the entire playthrough. or C. Something else. As for items and combat, in SOOTH both are possible to be used against the killer, but once again, to define Survival Horror, the player will always be in a atmosphere where they are never 100% safe, items must be managed wisely, and the atmosphere has to be creepy. While in other's perspectives like yours, a game where you're in a world full of every being that wants to kill you and always in pursuit of the player is more preferred. I always preferred games like Granny where the killer is by themself, stealthy as well (In some cases) and has some more sense than the player in a lot of cases. Murder house is a good example although I don't like that game either since I remember it was very attached to the story itself rather than the player's decisions on what to do, where to go, ontop of that the killer was easy to avoid and took the fight or flight sequence away from me that I thrill for. Other than that, I still think SOOTH was a very good game and better than Murder House despite it's bugs that it is having and how repetitive it can be, but knowing the killer knows you're out there and actually roams around the house rather than having scripted jumps everywhere, where it spawns behind a door and attacks you. Oh yeah and the killer in SOOTH even has a routine he follows (Rounding up survivors and butchering them before pushing a cart into his own saferoom and down the bunker which you can follow).

I mean its a small indie game from a dev who churns out VHS-core horror games with the same amount of effort and poor presentation. All due respect to them for getting their bag and being so successful etc but these games are so incredibly lazy and look horrendous, and that's not because of the VHS art style.
This studio just pumps out these same low-effort games over and over. The less effort they put in to the game, the better. I don't really blame them because goobers keep buying it, but simply running a pass through the writing is more effort than they're willing to spend on one of these turds
God forbid an indie developer uses a formula that works and people enjoy. If From Software does it it's fine and all their games rock but since this is a single guy and the game looks ugly (because it's a single guy) then it's not okay and it's lazy and shitty and bad. Poor presentation? These games are extremely stylish. The fact others are copying Puppet Combo like there's no tomorrow is just further proof of that. All these games have a nice hand drawn poster from a talented artist. They all got adjustable filters if you like those (or not). All of them have lore, maps to explore, real gameplay over being a walking sim. You people are complaining for the sake of complaining and little else. Fuck off
No but remember that boomer shooter vinny played that one time in the lizard crate that was just a schoolgirl with an uzi shooting up a posh Japanese boarding school
look up jerma - night shift. he’s played the prologue to this game before and the jumpscare made him scream like a teenage girl in a horror movie. worth seeing
I wish 1999 had won but that game is purposefully short to the point where if it was picked other games would have to be ready to go as well because it’s just that short. Like it’s great l, it’s still worth your time to play but it really is just 5 minutes.

All due respect to them for getting their bag and being so successful etc but these games are so incredibly lazy and look horrendous, and that's not because of the VHS art style.
ciricumstatnces
agree. also yeeeesh the high pitches sounds were melting my ears the whole stream
Fuck off
jermas face in the thumbnail is how i feel about puppet combo games and their insistence that loud = scary
this is dusk if the main character was your average schoolgirl
No but remember that boomer shooter vinny played that one time in the lizard crate that was just a schoolgirl with an uzi shooting up a posh Japanese boarding school
They called my great uncle a grannylike too, before he passed.

look up jerma - night shift. he’s played the prologue to this game before and the jumpscare made him scream like a teenage girl in a horror movie. worth seeing
The gas station part of the game came out a while ago and he played it on stream. That original play though gave him a good scare
i wanna reiterate on the first reply that he really did scream that bad + had that funny cozy christmas getup

- you stupid mfer, hate your guts. YOU SUCK.
what a magnificent finale
I wish 1999 had won but that game is purposefully short to the point where if it was picked other games would have to be ready to go as well because it’s just that short. Like it’s great l, it’s still worth your time to play but it really is just 5 minutes.
not if you are jerma apparently
I didnt even fucking click to open this video i got sent here by an ad popup
it’s just stage 1 of his invasion
Wtf is he saying “granny legs” ??? I know he’s referencing the game granny but what

he keeps saying “granny-like” as if its something that anyone who isn’t an absolute fuckin psychopath would say. This man is a scientific marvel
