She reminds me of one of my very favourite people; Sister Wendy. I am so terribly sad that she is gone and that the world has been deprived of such a deeply creative and emotionally intelligent human being.

Sister Wendy was less judgemental and she would not have left the country over a democratic vote. Sister Wendy did not shove her politics at us. Sister Wendy looked for the good in everyone and every situation. Sister Wendy was a devout Catholic and Mantel was very scathing of Catholics and religion in general.

@@rl7012 Thank you for weighing in. I've just learnt something I didn't know. (Now I see that I was comparing their outsides rather than their insides).
I'd have loved to hear them discuss some of the subjects they disagreed upon. I think it's particularly interesting when intelligent people who have opposing views get together to discuss subject matters that include those differences. It would have made for some intellectually stimulating, thought provoking and valuable conversation ... as both are able to hold their own... and, while strong in their individual beliefs, I think each would have been able to hear the other and give profound replies. I'm sad that this will never happen for us ... as we are here to learn, and that is a missed opportunity.

@@andreaandrea6716 I agree, it is just that I found sister Wendy very inclusive in her reasoning and Mantel is not. I deeply respect Mantel's writing and intellect, but her lefty politics and judgment of those with differing views to her, always left me astonished because they were so anti-intellectual. It seems to be always Remainers getting their self righteous soapboxes, and lefty remainers who even still casually put down Brexiteers as it is acceptable to constantly call over half the population thick for wanting not to be ruled by those muppets in Brussels. The fact that Mantel thought the Leave vote affected her self perception as a European so she had to leave the country, is just so ridiculous that I can't swallow it.

I imagine many more writers do and just don't become obsessed enough over blood ancestry to bother looking into it, let alone declaring it in their bio.
It's pretentious to claim x, y or z blood if you were not born or raised into the national culture associated with it.
Ancestry has nothing to do with who you are as a person any more than the color of your skin does.
Who you are as a person has infinitely more to do with your experiences over the first decade of your life - by the end of that your basic character is set in stone already, if not earlier still.

She wasn't living in poverty when I knew her family. I went to school with one of her brothers, they lived in a nice middle class four bedroom semi-detached on a street called Heyworth Avenue, Romiley, Stockport, and her brother went to a fee-paying private high school. The family later moved to a very nice stone 18th century house, next to the church in Compstall, Stockport, although by then she'd have been at university.

The only part that stuck in my craw was "...Like many women in mid-life, she would have lived in a mist of discontent, struggling to define something owing, something that had eluded her." Hmmm, really?

I wouldn't say it is the sole root of my depression, but it certainly is a major contributor to it.

Sorry.... British writers were European long long before the EU and will still be European long after Brexit. The EU is just one of a long list of, (most likely relatively temporary), power structures, but ‘European’ is a cultural ideal. Must say I am truly surprised that Ms Mantel doesn’t appreciate this point, it’s pretty obvious...

    • @NoLefTurnUnStoned.

Much of the ethos and mindset behind the Brexit machine is that we're not European, we're British and therefore different, unique and special.
It is a divorce from our European identity and a harking back to the "Great British Land of Hope and Glory"
"Bring back hanging, bring back the birch, bring back spinsters on bicycles"
It's now common to hear "I'm not European, I'm British!" especially in England where this mentality is most prevalent.
That's what she"s objecting to and I'm with her on that.
I live in Italy and France and I almost never hear anyone even mentioning the EU, positively or not...it's just an economic agreement, not perfect but mostly works fine.

@@NoLefTurnUnStoned. I appreciate your comment but I don’t know where you got your information from... attitudes in the U.K. are exactly as they were years ago... some people have traveled, some people are culturally aware, others not so much... Brexit hasn’t moved the vast majorities of people’s needle one degree towards any kind of chauvinism... maybe I don’t move in intellectual circles but people are just to busy getting on with their lives... and on the whole are totally aware of our vastly diminished place in the wider world... if you think we are at all interested in hanging, flogging or bicycling spinsters you really should get out more....
