What a sublime writer Hilary Mantel was, and I was so saddened by the news of her death. So much great work that would have appeared, now silenced by her passing. Supreme prose stylist, without peer to my mind. I remain in awe of her massive talent, and this volume is a fitting end to a brilliant trilogy.
The Mirror and the Light is 700+ pages of spellbinding historical fiction which propels you back into Tudor times even deeper than the first two books. The whole of the trilogy is an absolute triumph.
@@eugeneclasby518 You can't change history to suit yourself. More left journals, papers behind. They are sources of information on his life. The times were different.
I wish i had attended one of Dame Hilary's readings. I initially thought the books would be Cartlandesque dockets on history - how wrong was I. Fascinating mind and equally fascinating historian and writer. I thank her warmly.
One of the most wonderful authors! I am so very sad to hear of her death. May Lord Jesus and all the heavenly host grant Hilary perfect peace and eternal happiness. Message to Thomas Cromwell; if you’re around up there ( debatable ) - go find this truly gifted and amazing woman and bloody well explain yourself! God speed to this genius of literary inspiration. We are so lucky that Hilary has left us such a fabulous body of work for the nation to treasure. x
I read it during lockdown it was incredible. I love the way it starts with Cromwell’s youth and ends with his execution an the memory of his youth & start in life.
I’m a huge fan of Tudor history books and adaptations but these books are in a league of their own so I was let’s say apprehensive what the tv version would be like and would it do them justice have no fear the books actuality came to life it’s been a real joy to watch
Those chilling opening sentences read by the author! I had this book on my shelf from the library from March 10, 2020 to the first week of June when the library reopened during the pandemic. The book came out just before lockdown in the US. I was so upset by its presence on my bookshelf for 3 months of lockdown, unable to rid myself of it, its foreign presence in my home. When the library chute opened on June 9, I immediately threw the book down the chute and away from me. It was that upsetting.
You'd lose a lot, but I assume it's possible if you have some prior knowledge of henry the 8th's court. I would always suggest reading the other two first, they're incredible books.
The first two books are astonishing. I have never read such beautiful, insightful, heartbreaking and occasionally funny writing. Do read them - or, better still, get them at Audible where both narrators are beyond excellent.
Its such a shame this brilliant story is totally ruined by the woke brigade. Saw an interview with the producer claiming that the only thing that wasn't accurate about the films portrayal of 1536 was the use of fake beaver skins instead of real ones. What about all the actors in it of African heritage - guards , lords etc? England in 1536 wasn't a diverse multicultural community. Im sure the woke brigade will condescendingly say my ignorance means I don't understand that anyone of any colour can play any part. So why not have a more diverse range actors ( transgender etc ) working in the fields in the film '10 years a slave' or represented amongst the tribesman in the film 'Zulu' ?
For me, choosing Mark Rylance was a mistake. Holbein’s portrait shows us a different, larger person, probably accurately portrayed , a conniving, not at all kind, face. Rylance’s face is thinner, his whole manner is kinder, and generally he is too small physically.
Brilliant book, beautifully written but Thomas Cromwell was so cold-hearted apart from loving his family. Henry 8th was a monster & tyrant. Read it all but glad when it was finished.
Rest in peace to an absolute legend. Thank you Dame Hilary 🩷

It did the same for me. It ended up my favourite and was very sad when I finished reading it.
Lies and slanders. Making a hero of a monster. Spite and venom abounding.

@@peg202xo7It’s a revenge book. And she does change history to glorify the grotesque Cromwell. The consummate self-seeker.
Rest in eternal peace Dame Hilary ❤ I am so enjoying the bbc adaptation of wolf hall and more recently the mirror and the light.
This Trilogy is a masterpiece. Hope Ms Mantel wins Booker Prize for the 3rd time.

I read it in three days and we ate take-away on all those days. Poignantly, achingly beautiful and so gripping. Thanks, 4th Estate.#waitwasworthit

I think she knew him very well xxx
Well said .
She moved me to tears: I wish I could find such a delicate woman like her.

Spoiler alert!! 😅🤣😂
She's easily my favourite author of all times!

RIP, Dame Mantel
Given the cruel injustices against Henrys women this is probably a tale best told by a women
Absorbed into a different world. Amazing.
The mirror andcthe light may be long but it is quite a rapid read : almost all conversation.
I could listen to H.M. forever.
What an astonishing mind.
RIP The world of books has lost one of its the best authors.
Brilliant 👏👏
Good info
Why the 3rd book never won the Man Booker is a mystery. R.I. P Hilary Mantel. I loved the Wolf Hall Trilogy.
Chilling
Thomas Cromwell is an ancestor of mine so I am loving Hillarys books.
Hey! How does he relate to you?

Brutal coniving times when ones in the close warmth and protection of the sun verged on being burnt alive
I only have this book, not the other two,
Will it make somewhat sense if i read this only?
