My Dad gave me Workingman's Dead on CD back in 1993. I was 16 years old. It wasn't my birthday, no special occasion whatsoever. He apparently just stopped off somewhere at random and picked it up because he thought I would like it... I loved it. Whenever I listen to this album, especially New Speedway Boogie, Easy Wind or Black Peter I'm transported back to the most carefree wonderous time of my life. Thanks Dad.
This new podcast is exactly what the rock ‘n roll doctor ordered. Aligning it with the newly released 50th anniversary of Workingman’s-and dedicating the first 8 episodes to the tracks on that historical LP-is goddamned perfect.
My last GD show was 25 years ago today 7/9/95. Last time I ever saw Jerry he was watching the fireworks with the rest of us. Simply put, they are America's greatest band.
Was great hearing these interviews today, 25 years after the final Grateful Dead concert. 50 years ago when Workingmans Dead was released I had been to my first two Dead shows earlier in the year at the Fillmore East. The acoustic sets plus the New Riders of the Purple Sage made for magical experiences. 1970 was a real high point in my life being able to see the Dead at the Fillmore, the Capital Theater and Stony Brook. Those times are indelibly branded in my soul. Come hear Uncle John’s Band Playing to the tide Come with me or go alone He’s come to take his children home
The penmanship from Robert Hunter on these two albums Beauty/Workingman is unbelievable. Organically Americana. Pinnacle Songs. The beauty that lies I'm these lyrics still bring tears to my eyes. Fare Thee Well
"If the Grateful Dead came to town I'd beat my way in with a fucking tire iron if necessary" Hunter's writing style was so revolutionary and hilarious at the same time. This is the second or third time I've heard or read this quote and it always makes me laugh.
This is awesome! The Grateful Dead has such a wealth of vital cultural depth as a phenomenal creative movement, the likes of which I'll never see again in my lifetime. Keep 'em coming - and thanks for eliminating those pain in the ass ads!
What a treat this was! I feel so much more attached to this song; and to now know that will happen with every song on the album is almost to much to handle;) This is gonna be fun...
On top of getting the free Angel's Share session tracks (amazing!) - THIS is an amazing amount of original research and insight. I'm blown away. Compared to the seemingly endless live shows everyone has been digesting, these stories are gold for anyone who loves the album!
Fantastic PodCast folks- thank you so much.. Bob Matthews needs his own Hour or two of his own to discuss how the Dead worked in the studio. Nice job cant wait for Part 2~!
What??? "Shakedown Stream", "The Angel's Share" and now this??? Well...thank you very much!!! I love this chapter since this was the very first song that I listened from the Grateful Dead after I bought the "Great Expectations Soundtrack". This is awesome!!!
I really enjoyed the show, thank you! I'd love to have references to the live shows when segments are played, so I can maybe find tapes. Looking forward to the next show!
When I was a kid and first discovered the Grateful Dead my Dad gave me his copy of Workingmans. He would always tell me how this album was his Favorite Dead album.
having read the garcia interview where he mentions the Bulgarian Womens' Choir, i too long wondered what he heard that inspired UJB. Alas, i think you nailed it. i hear the turn of melody in there. god damn well i declare, EXCELLENT RESEARCH! thanks
This is great. I was already podcasted-out and thought I knew it all w/r/t the history of the Dead. But this is well put together - listenable and I learned something.
You all did a super good job with this. I’ve always appreciated how the Dead know that a free-sharing of their history and music broadens the group’s reach and helps sell more music.
I just recently subscribed to your channel. Just in time for this wonderful Podcast. It’s amazing how detailed you you go on just one song. The coolest part is that I share a birthday with the album although it’s a year older.
This "Deadcast" is so awesome!! One of my favorite Dead tunes to strum out and sing myself. I had heard or read the interview with Jerry talking about the origins of UJB. I too have been wondering how I might locate the "Bulgarian folk music" (as I believe Jerry put it) which inspired the song. The piece sampled definitely has the melody--love it! Thanks to all who took the time and energy to put this all together and to do that research. I trust that it was a labor of love!
Wow, such weird timing! My friends and I just started a podcast called The A-Philes where we've been exploring the Dead's last summer tour in 1995, exactly 25 years ago! We've been breaking down each concert and discussing different facets of what made this tour so special. If you're interested in watching, tune into twitch.tv/gruesomefeatures Monday at 8 pm, EST!
What a nice addition to this music, legendary and all. I get the Jerry/Miles references. In my opinion, they took the main melody and ran with it. To me the miracle of the Grateful Dead was not how long they survived, but that they survived at all with so many independent souls. (In the end, Jerry Garcia was the Lead Guitar that gathered them together.) More than Miles, Jerry has made me think of Django. Just my opinion.
the influence of harry smith's anthology of american music has to be mentioned as a major input to both hunter and garcia as they incorporated lyrics and melodies into these tunes
yes if you take the new songs from the live skull & roses from 71 plus the 6 tunes from europe72 there would have been another record of 8 tunes that we'll never get studio versions of... what a shame....would have been exceptional...
Listened to The Penny Whistlers. Glad to find you agree!!! It's Shto Mi E Milo! You can just hear it in there! Thanks for the translation-"I Will Be Glad" That's how 'Uncle John's Band' makes a person feel!!!
ruclips.net/video/vPi02RY-brg/видео.html -Jerry was also Glad to be looking at the gals!
This is gonna be phenomenal! It’s definitely a shame about the Angel’s Share though. I think it’s pretty screwed up to come out with something like that and use it to try and force people to shell out for subscriptions to needless, money grubbing music streaming services. That’s about as anti-Grateful Dead as it gets, in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong... I would gladly pay for the Angel’s Share as an album, but renting music is just offensive to me.
The electric version with Brent is driving me bonkers, I know it but cannot find it. All the versions they played were from official releases - after some more research it's Dick's Picks 05 (12/26/79). The 2nd set of the show is boiling with fresh energy. The Joani Walker/Paul Scotton aud is the way to go
Sorry to here that saw the dead and Willie together. Had a great time dancing with mostly all hippies. Zero fights and Zero hate. 87 concerts and only saw one fight. And that was in Cali. Sorry you fought with the cowboys.
I'm pretty sure I heard the story of black Peter being about a mountain climber up on ever Mount Everest during a snowstorm proceeded to open up and urinate slipped on the trail and was found dead with his Peter in his hand totally blackened from frostbite
Came of age in the Bay Area during the late '60s and early "70s. Even saw the Dead in Golden Gate Park for free. But I never got it...and fifty years later, still don't. They seemed like a lesser iteration of the Allman Brothers.
Jerry was the lifeblood, no jam band will ever be able to do it like the dead. phish sucks John Mayer replacing jerry? Yeah right John Mayer sucks, Jerry was one of the greatest improvisational guitarists of all time.

Oh man workman's dead saved me for some ruff times. Thanks. D.E.A.D my initials. Doreen Eloise Ann Del. So cool back in the day.

joao paulo Servato I’ve never been so to have this
My last GD show was 25 years ago today 7/9/95. Last time I ever saw Jerry he was watching the fireworks with the rest of us. Simply put, they are America's greatest band.
That was everybody's last GD show.
Best show in town….
Thank you so much! Just the refreshment our hearts and minds need during quarancrazy.

If we have to explain it , you would not understand how awesome this is. Dead forever, forever dead.
But if you had to, could you explain it in one or two sentences?
This is awesome! The Grateful Dead has such a wealth of vital cultural depth as a phenomenal creative movement, the likes of which I'll never see again in my lifetime. Keep 'em coming - and thanks for eliminating those pain in the ass ads!

A much needed grateful podcast⚡

So cool you dudes are doing this
You all did a super good job with this. I’ve always appreciated how the Dead know that a free-sharing of their history and music broadens the group’s reach and helps sell more music.
Wow! Loved hearing the context of the introduction of the UJB melody in that dark star exploration!
One of my favorite albums for sure✌🌈🌠💗
I just recently subscribed to your channel. Just in time for this wonderful Podcast. It’s amazing how detailed you you go on just one song. The coolest part is that I share a birthday with the album although it’s a year older.

I like new speedway boogie on the album better than there live version which is rare.
This is holy
29:36 NICE 🤙
the influence of harry smith's anthology of american music has to be mentioned as a major input to both hunter and garcia as they incorporated lyrics and melodies into these tunes
UJB is a well-known off ramp into the psychedelic jam land.
Hunter wanted to do a third Dead album called "Rambling Rose" to go along with Beauty and WMD, I heard.
yes if you take the new songs from the live skull & roses from 71 plus the 6 tunes from europe72 there would have been another record of 8 tunes that we'll never get studio versions of... what a shame....would have been exceptional...
You guys should check out weeping willow guitar lessons on RUclips. He does really detailed grateful dead lessons

Folk rock blues jazz psychedelic country they had a little bit of everything.
👍🏾👍👍🏿 A Jazz Band that played Rock n Roll..When they were on Fire
the Dead were the Best.
Jerry on uncle johns band sounded like he wanted to sing over instead of his guitar singing the lyrics.
would love to see a "voice of.." label for the folks speaking on the youtube videos!
Yee haw!
YEEEE BOOOOIIIII
Wahoo!

What a thread
ScooterD35 I listen to if for free on spot-ify
could someone please write out the extra hunter verses for this or point the way to them with a link?

I love Jerry’s acoustic the most.
About time!
I always got in fights with the cowboys specially when I saw the dead tour with Willy Nelson ...
Sorry to here that saw the dead and Willie together. Had a great time dancing with mostly all hippies. Zero fights and Zero hate. 87 concerts and only saw one fight. And that was in Cali. Sorry you fought with the cowboys.

I'm wearing my grateful dead jacket while wearing this - w -
And?
And who asked for you to speak@@wesleylane4188 ?
And?
I thought the first dude talking was going to explain to us how the name to the first album came about
🌹😍
I'm pretty sure I heard the story of black Peter being about a mountain climber up on ever Mount Everest during a snowstorm proceeded to open up and urinate slipped on the trail and was found dead with his Peter in his hand totally blackened from frostbite
Is this narrator the same as in all those Pitchfork music mini docs?
Jerome 'Uncle John" Garcia
☕
Good morning!
Pete Seeger found Elizabeth Cotten.
12:05
Helloooooooo! Jerry's first name is John.
Actually his first name is Jerome....Jerome James Garcia
The dead's golden years died with Brent Mydland.
After that it was Jerry being forced to tour on his deathbed, which eventually killed him.
Guy. Get a hug. Cry it out. Bad vibes.
Many would argue that the Dead's golden years died with Pigpen.
Came of age in the Bay Area during the late '60s and early "70s. Even saw the Dead in Golden Gate Park for free. But I never got it...and fifty years later, still don't. They seemed like a lesser iteration of the Allman Brothers.
You guys sound like you are trying too hard to be pro. Great content, but chill out and try to enjoy what you are doing.
Jerry was the lifeblood, no jam band will ever be able to do it like the dead.
phish sucks
John Mayer replacing jerry?
Yeah right
John Mayer sucks, Jerry was one of the greatest improvisational guitarists of all time.
