The Canon EF 1.4x extender is a great tool to add more focal length possibilities to your prime and tilt shift lenses - but does it degrade the image overall? Does it soften the image? Does it add excessive chromatic aberration? Find out in some side-by-side comparisons.

I use the 1.4 extender with the 17mm TS-E for real estate. It is a marriage made in heaven! A brilliant combo.

I'm still trying to convince a specific Asian manufacturer to make a 35mm shift lens, but I fully agree with your point here, this combo It's pretty good in practical terms, the added distortion is easy to correct. I think we share the same philosophy, I think we should rather focus on things that really matter on the business of arch. and interior photography rather than pixel peeping, a good photo is a good photo, no matter If it's sharper or not. Great content as always Matthew, I'm glad you're crushing it on YT

Hi Matthew! One effect you didn't mention was the barrel distortion the extender creates. It would be great to see you test that and show some solutions. I usually use lens correction in Photoshop and adjust remove distortion to about 1.5 (using the extender on 24mm ts) . It would be interesting to hear of other solutions! Thanks!

I use the Canon Lens Extender EF 1.4X III with the EF800mm f5.6, EF600mm F4:0, EF300mm f2.8 and the 70-200mm f2.8 with both a Canon 1Dx and Canon R3 (with adaptor) and yes you do loose a stop but that has never been a problem. I can't tell any difference with both sharpness and focus speed and I have had cover shots and double page spreads in magazines with the adaptor. I have also used the Canon Lens Extender EF 2.0 X III, whilst acceptable you loose 2 stops and there is a reduction in sharpness but it is still OK but I don't use it that much, if I do it is mainly with the EF300 and EF70-200. So to sum up I would have no problem recommending the 1.4X III extender. I am a sports shooter mainly surfing and cycling.

Thanks for this. Perfect timing. I'm considering one for outdoor use where my 24mm is just a bit too wide sometimes.

In my experience, and with most people I know who use extenders, they suffer the problems you mentioned at wider apertures. This is a problem when stacking on a 70-200 lens and trying to shoot at f/2.8. (This is a very common use case for the 2x and 1.4x extender). For wildlife photography, sharpness wide open with an extender takes a significant hit and typically, you are better off cropping in post. Feel free to run the experiment again with longer focal lengths and wider apertures, but if that’s not your use case, then enjoy and it’s a nice tool to have in the bag.

Can’t you achieve the exact same final image by cropping?

Yeah of course. Just like you could get a framing similar to 70mm by cropping in on a 24mm shot.

I somewhat disagree with your assessment of the Canon EF 1.4X III extender degrading image quality. The Canon 1.4X III extender is designed to work seamlessly with Canon cameras. I am not sure why you didn't use the Sony 1.4x matched to a Sony lens for this evaluation. While using this EF extender with a Sony camera and a Metabones adapter may result in slight image degradation, it is not an issue when used with Canon DSLR DX Series cameras or other brands. In some cases, using 1.4X - 2X extenders with DSLR cameras may require microfocusing adjustments from the camera menu to address far and near focus issues. However, this is not an issue with Canon mirrorless cameras. Personally, I have used Canon extenders with my Canon R3 and R5 cameras, paired with EF Canon 400mm 2.8 II, EF Canon 70-200mm 2.8, and Sigma 120-200mm 2.8 Sport lenses, and the results have been razor sharp. The only noticeable image degradation occurs when increasing the ISO to overcome the 1 to 2 stops of light loss in trade for increased image noise. Additionally, if using a UV filter for lens protection, ensure it is made of quality glass to avoid degrading image quality especially when using super zoom lenses.

This was really helpful and eased my mind about purchasing one few weeks ago. Slightly off-topic, but does anyone know if the 2x extender will yield similar results in terms of quality, or is it worse?
I'm asking as after more than 7 months of hunting for and being unable to obtain the 50mm TS-E literally anywhere I had to throw in the towel :( Was wondering if 2x extender on 24mm would be a decent alternative, at least for now.

It is just a little ridiculous to have one of these on the lens, when it's already adapted... lol

This reinforces my idea of grabbing a 17mm and adding this to the bag with a 2x to achieve a 23.8mm and a 34mm on a budget. As someone just starting to seriously consider adding shifting to my bag, I think it seems like a no-brainer. Only complaint i have is that the photo from your story did NOT make it as the thumbnail. #unsubscribingaspromised #ijest
