  • A review of Tumi’s warranty, or lack thereof. This is why I’ll never buy a Tumi product again.

    Actually they did the right thing...a company usually does not dispose of damaged property of individuals. The individuals can always come back later and try to claim the company lost it or some such scam...happens all the time. And as a traveler, I am sorry for the loss of your luggage...I own several Tumi items myself...but let me just say it - it is not Tumi's fault, it is the airlines fault, why should Tumi absorb the cost of repair?? The proper course of action was to file a claim against the airline.

    This must be a 20 year-old design, true? and used 1000 times, true? To damage Tumi bag/luggage the force had to be incredible, they are made to last, I own 10+ pieces of Tumi stuff and they just last and last..............If the airline did this file a complaint with them.

      They didn’t have rolling bags 20 years ago, so no. It was used maybe two dozen times. Yes, it would take a lot of force. I have 30 year old Tumi bags that are still perfect. Just wait until one of your bags gets damaged beyond repair and the offer you a $130 gift certificate.

      @@KadoReviews agreed, but they are still the best quality to price ratio I think.

    • @KadoReviews

      The issue I had was a design flaw, as well as plastics. They used to be absolutely bulletproof. Hence, I still have the 30 year old luggage. Considering they have manufacturing and supply chain in China and Thailand now, their quality has diminished. So, I don’t see them as having the quality product they had when it was manufactured solely in the US. if you look at things like handles, bumpers, and wheels, they’ve really gone south as far as quality is concerned. My old Tumi luggage has metal hardware, and hard rubber bumpers. It’s a huge difference. That’s the quality I would pay a premium for, but sadly, Tumi eliminated those features to increase profitability at the sacrifice of a once incredible reputation.

    Sorry for your experience. I had a problem with my strap on a briefcase, I went to my retailer and asked if they had a new one. They didn't and asked me if they should check if they would be able to order one, I didn't hear anything from them. I heard from them a week later that I could pick it up. I did and asked how much, no it is free, I thought I heard wrong, but again I was told it was no charge. Maybe it was just a good store. I didn't even show a receipt or the bag.

    Have to agree with them, you should have filed a claim with the airline, this is not a warranty issue.

    A client for thirty years, no more because of a single incident that was a product either of poor communication or of a bigger, longer story the reviewer was loathe to share because it would cast him in a negative light. The experience, as shared, is wildly atypical - and if TUMI lost the reviewer because of it, then TUMI came out ahead.

    I do not think you should give up on TUMI. Just do not buy that type of luggage anymore. My favorite are TUMI, Rimowa and Samsonite.

    To be fair this isn't a factory defect , I didn't know that they covered accidental damage before

    That is why I only use cheap suitcases for checked in luggage. I've had luggage damaged before by luggage handlers too, they don't give a damn how much you payed for your suitcase.

    • @KadoReviews
      @KadoReviews  4 года назад +3

      That’s precisely what I’ve moved to. Tumi is a label now. Nothing more. Their old luggage was bulletproof. I still have the set from 1990, and it’s held up perfectly. That’s before the days of rolling suitcases so I don’t use it anymore. I buy cheap bags, and when they’re destroyed, I buy another cheap set.

  • @CG-kf5vh
    @CG-kf5vh 3 года назад +7

    Why they sent it back? So you could not claim the luggage back months later. I’m convinced they didn’t believe your story. They most likely did not buy the premise that the bag was damaged by TSA that much. A lot of people make the damage on an item worse, or beyond repair, hoping the warranty would replace it for a new one. I never had any problems, other than their repairs are inordinately expensive, and I’ve been using Tumi luggage for 18 years.

    • @KadoReviews
      @KadoReviews  3 года назад +1

      They basically told me it was beyond repair, and even though I explained I was a customer of theirs since 1990, it didn’t matter. As for the damage, it is only conceivable that it was done by machinery. The issue is a design flaw. They used ballistic nylon as usual, but cheap plastic to house the wheels and prevent damage from being slid. I surmise that it came loose on a conveyor belt, snagged, and ultimately ripped the bag apart. Believe me, I wasn’t happy having to drag it through the airport while carrying a laptop bag and carryon.
      In my last correspondence, they offered me the small gift card, and said I needed to confirm I would accept it, or they would ship the bag back. I did. I said I would use it to buy a gift and purchase my luggage elsewhere. They then shipped it back. Honestly, I wish they would dispute me publicly. I would make the correspondence public.

      Kado Reviews I believe you. Customer service isn’t what it used to be. It’s the new normal.

    • @KadoReviews
      @KadoReviews  3 года назад +1

      That is the unfortunate truth. I always had positive experiences in Tumi stores, and never had to deal with Tumi direct. I had a previous issue with a piece of luggage, dropped it off, and they called me when it was fixed. You couldn’t ask for more. Now, they just don’t care. Good customer service is so rare these days that it’s driving consumers to a disposable market. They would rather buy something cheap and replace it than deal with rude customer service, or even a lack of customer service altogether.

    Sorry to say, but I think you’re wrong blaming the manufacturer. Yes I agree that if their product was faulty due to the manufacturing process, the wheel suddenly fell off whilst being used, or for arguments sake the handle broke whilst you were wheeling it along.... then YES their warranty should most definitely cover this!
    If on the other hand your case was damaged by the uncaring and wreck less hands of baggage handlers, as yours looks like it was, then you should bring a dispute/case against that specific carrier. Just saying ☺️

    I had my sets of tumi for a long time didn’t have problem with them until today, we just came back from a vacation cruise found out it has a cracked on the front carbon fiber cover. I’ve seen how baggage handlers treat our luggages, it’s unforgivable… I will call the airline if they can do something about it or just simply bring it tumi repair place if it’s repairable or not.

    Well your intent served it’s purpose. I now will not purchase from Tumi. I was just about to buy a luggage set from them for my cruise next year. Thank you for posting this video. Saved me at LEAST a grand, or more. I was planning on spending about $2500 for the pieces I want BECAUSE of their history, warranty and quality. Thank you again for saving me lots of money and headaches.

    • @KadoReviews

      Glad I could help. They are obviously not the company they used to be. The damage to my luggage was their design flaw. The insult was sending it back to me and not giving me the gift certificate (I would have given away) that they stated they would. Years ago, they were a company that produced products you felt your money was well spent on. Now you can get cheaper and more durable luggage with a better warranty.

      Dude, Tumi is great. I've never had a problem with their luggage or warranty. This guy is blaming Tumi for something that is clearly the airlines responsibly to fix.

  • @chewie94116

    Just found your video. I think you are given the option of a gift card or return of the suitcase. Why $100. Not sure. Maybe it was $1000 if your suitcase is $2000, but that damage seems crazy! I have had damage, but not like that. Sorry for your loss. If you do not reply and tell them you want the gift card, then they will send you back the luggage. Sounds like you got upset and did not reply or did not want the gift card. So, you got your luggage back. I agree with the others, maybe file a claim with your credit card ( a lot have luggage protection like American Express) or file with the airline.

    Sorry this happened to you. Loyalty means nothing in this 'Disposable' world in which we now live. I'm convinced that luggage by tumi, rimowa etc al, is a red rag to some baggage handlers, who see it as their duty to take our expensive luggage on a conveyor belt joyride. It is this reason alone, that I've limited my premium purchases to cabin only. Having said that, I've gotten 10 good years out of an American tourister large checked case, from Walmart.
    Personally, I think wheels are the weak link in luggage. If designers could somehow manufacture their cases with retractable wheels that spring back into the case body, that would increase the longevity, and durability, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing.

    Their luggage has gone downhill for sure. I just bought a $975 alpha international carryon to replace my Alpha 2 from 2011. It was just a convoluted mess of zippers and pockets that was completely impractical. Worse, I could tell it was going to look like shit in 1 or 2 trips. I returned it next day and repaired my old suitcase handles. I don't intend to buy from Tumi for my next bag, although I'm not sure if I can find one that I'll like. Any suggestions?

    2 questions:
    1. How old was the item when damaged?
    2. Did you contact the airline and request payment for the bag. My GF's TravelPro bag was recently damaged by AA in Barcelona. Obviously, it was a lot cheaper than your Tumi bag, but not only did AA send me a check for what I paid for the bag, but I also claimed w/TravelPro & they sent me a new bag (it was under warranty.)
