Last night I made a fantastic Chicken Chow Mein from a packet of ramen, a handful of frozen stir-fry veg, some leftover chicken, a little oil, and minced ginger and garlic. It was seriously yummy, took 10 minutes to make, produced very little washing up, and cost around 60p. All from the pantry!

I love the 'use it up' vibe - like using the last bits of bacon in the egg bake! I think all the cooking shows make us think every meal has to be a magnificent gourmet extravaganza - when in the real world, tasty, healthy and affordable hits the mark. Some great ideas here Sara, and your attitude is cream on the cake!

At the grocery, I focus on fresh and frozen vegetables, tofu, and fruit on sale. I make my own bread at home. 2 cups of flour makes one loaf of sandwich bread. Definitely cheaper to make bread. I make my own seitan. I get the store brand coffee. Gotta have coffee.

Money has been so tight lately we are not grocery shopping at all. I took stock of what is in my pantry (it's a big pantry) and my freezer. I picked all those strange bags of small leftovers from the freezer and put them together in a bag in the freezer. Some have writing on them so I know what is in the bag the rest is a surprise, that's what we are eating first. I'll be able to tell what is in the bag once it's thawed out. Since I have lots of pancake mix just add water we will be having pancakes on my husbands days off, we just needed to buy syrup (I wanted to just use sugar water but, he said no, he had to have syrup) So I spent 4.00 on groceries this week just for his precious syrup. I want 900 dollars by the end of the month, 400 is needed. Making due with what I have, lights off, because the heat is on. Thanks for the video

Hi Sara, this is Sarah watching from Ohio. My husband is a hunter but never has time to go hunting. So my tip is during hunting season is contact your local butcher for deer that people bring in that they don’t want they have to give it away for free. If you can’t or not able to butcher it yourself they can process it for a lot less then you can buy meat at the store. I use venison in all my dishes instead of ground beef. Loving your tips Thanks!❤

These all look delicious! I will note this video on my meal plan idea list. I’m gearing up for a shelf-cooking month in December. I made an excel list of all the food in my freezer, pantry and fridge. I have the three separate lists and on each list is the item, amount/size and expiration date. For the couple things that don’t have a date, I give a 6-month date to use up. I then combined all three lists into one list and put in order of the expiration date with the closest date on top. I now have a food plan ready to go for the month! I’ve also allowed a few dollars a week for fresh produce & dairy.

I just had to share this (from the UK). Yesterday, I bought 2 Chickens, 2kg Chicken Thighs, ½ Peking Duck, 30 quality sausages, 1kg butter, and a pack of stir fry veggies from the freezer shop for *£25!* I live alone, so that's enough chicken for 6 months. The butter, which freezes well, was a thief's bargain: £2 cheaper a kilo even than Aldi!
(In a couple of weeks I'll have enough chicken batch meals cooked to buy the bulk fish).

Neat idea, $50.00 challenge. I do wish you had emphasized that you were challenging your viewers to show how they would spend $50.00 to feed four (even if they don't have four, they could just do meals for four and freeze the remainder).
I actually spend way too much on food. However, just sticking to what you purchased and substituting only a few things: With the sausage/brats - I'd made Toad In the Hole, which is baked sausage & Yorkshire pudding. That feeds four hungry people easily. (Yorkshire pudding is a quick bread.) All is baked in one casserole dish, so easy clean up.
I'd bought a whole chicken and used the carcass for a pot of soup. I'd roasted the rest. I'd poured the combined leftovers of soup and chicken meat into a blender and added ~4T unflavored gelatin, either red food color or ½ beetroot, and poured the puree into water bottles, let set up overnight and had homemade bologna next day.
I'd put an egg in each muffin space of my muffin pan; Cut the bacon down the center and placed the halved strips onto a baking tray; I don't like tuna, so I would've made Tuna Pancakes as that's the only way I can stomach tuna: to pancake batter, add drained tuna, ½ tsp dry mustard powder, worcestershire sauce, and bacos. Serve with scrambled eggs, and White Gravy over the top. FYI baked eggs come out the same as boiled eggs, so egg salad sandwiches or deviled eggs. Of course you do have the makings of spaghetti; ground beef, pasta sauce, spag noodles; leftover spag into spag casserole, topped with lots of cheese. I like to fill every rack when I bake in the oven to not waste electric - casseroles, bacon and eggs would've been done on a single day, then parsed out during the week. So that's how I'd approached the grocery list you had. Cheers.

It's very nice to see some alternative recipes! For me, one of the nicest things about Frugal Food is how creative it becomes. I got a really good deal on frozen sausages this week, and I felt really chuffed when I found a recipe that used that leftover red pepper, and those surplus mushrooms, in a sausage casserole - and I can fit Soda Bread and a Lentil & Cheese Bake into the oven at the same time!
I'll definitely be making Sausage Toad, also. Thanks for reminding me of it.

I cooked up a whole chicken last week. Had my meals all planned out.
Unfortunately, I had a TIA Sunday night and have been in the hospital since. I'm so looking forward to going home tomorrow (hopefully) and eating my own cooking again!
Here's an easy soup that I make.
Remove the meat from a chicken carcass. You don't need to have it all off. Place in a pot of water and cook for several hours. Put in fridge overnight.
Remove the next day and get the rest of the meat off.
While you're working on that, return the stock to a boil. Add onion, celery, carrots, regular rice (about 1/3-1/2 cup)and a package of frozen spinach. Season to taste with salt, pepper and poultry seasoning. Once you have all the meat off the bones, add that to your soup. Cook until the veggies are tender and the rice is cooked.

I have focused so much over the past several years on stocking and preserving that I could easily not hit the stores for 2- to 2-1/2 weeks at a time and that’s only because we would need to restock the milk and heavy cream. I think the key is to making foods from scratch and even foods you wouldn’t think to make from scratch..bread products as on English muffins, bagels, raisin bagels, cinnamon bagels, rolls , biscuits, pastas, pizza crust, egg noodles, hash browns, French fries, tator tots, mashed potatoes a 5-lb bag regularly runs on sale $2.99 a bag that 5-lb bag can yield a lot of food depending on size of family and portion control..I have never made tator tots but it’s actually really easy from the recipes I have found…now who would think about making your own? Making all deserts from scratch most alway is cheaper and gives you more.. chicken is the cheapest meat to buy in my area I would go with chicken thighs and legs if I were to doing a $50 a week budget..so for me it would be meat, onions, potatoes and veggies , jars of spaghetti sauce, cheese..WE love pizza in this house..I’m going to try this starting next week..not sure if it would be fair though because I’m stocked..but I challenges..

I know that the chicken breasts were cheaper over all than the whole chicken but what was the price per pound? I prefer the whole chicken because there is a lot of bone and skin that helps make a flavorful broth for your soup and not a bouillon cube. I also like that it doesn't come out dry unless you overcook it. I would still go with a whole chicken and maybe cut out some of the canned stuff

I agree - for 2 of us, one whole chicken goes a LONG way. If it's especially big, I'll remove and freeze the chicken breasts and roast the rest, so a thigh and leg each for dinner, a couple of wings is lunch for one (I always leave a little breast meat attached), the carcass, bones and all the yummy brown bits on the baking tray make a great stock, and there's 2 good meals for 2 from the chicken breasts - especially if it's crumbed (a treat!). Every family is different, every cook is different, every country's grocery prices and choices are different - but isn't it wonderful how we can all learn from each other!! Oh and when I die and go to heaven, there will be roast chook for dinner everyday LOL. Cheers from Oz!

I take the Costco Chicken. Debone. Divide into 1 cup packs and freeze.
Cover the SKIN & BONES with water in a soup pot with a stick of celery, scraps from carrots and onions. Add a bay leaf, sage, rosemary and thyme. Or what's on hand. Boil for 30 mins on med heat. (I usually have a bag with everything in it that I save a little bit at a time in the freezer.) Scoop out the remains. Pull the bits off of the bone to put in soup at the end. Make your favorite soup. If you want more chicken in it add one of the cups you deboned at the end.

I have a very similar plan: I remove the legs from a raw chicken, roast the breast and wings, and casserole the legs with onions, carrots and celery in the bottom of the same oven. I have one breast for a roast dinner, then chop the remaining breast and freeze the chopped meat and the two portions of casserole for future meals. I strip the carcass and make a stock from it and the trimmings from the casserole veg, and reserve the chicken pickings in the fridge, as you do. One small chicken can go a long way. 🇬🇧

A cheap meal is homemade chicken noodle soup. Homemade or store bought noodles, leftover broth from turkey or chicken that was in freezer, carrots, celery, and four boullion cubes. It was so good. Threw in a can of chicken from the Walmart that was $2.50 a can.

Cook up 1kilo of dry beans and freeze in ziploc freezer bags, much much healthier than canned beans and a lot cheaper too. You can make burritos, tacos, beans soup, chile dogs ect...

I was wondering, just today, if that would work. I just got back from the shop with tins and tins of kidney beans, canellini beans, and chickpeas. I have a pressure cooker, so dried beans are quick and easy for me to cook, but not worth doing in small quantities. Do you freeze them in some of the cooking liquid, or dry?

I buy chicken bullion powder in Hispanic or Asian markets and add that to plain rice as loads cheaper. If I want rice a roni, I just fry some broken dry spaghettini noodles in a little oil. Then I cook it in the rice pan. Look up rice a roni clone recipe. Loads cheaper and tastier than the little envelopes of flavored rice.

Great job! Did you actually calculate the cost of the items you already had? While you only spent $50 this time, all the items you already had did add a cost to the overall meal plan. I always try to stock up and have a large livable (items your family will actually eat) pantry staples to shop from. I also try to budget in money for those things you find at chance, like yesterday at Aldi many of the organic chicken was 50% so I stocked up on it even though it wasn’t technically needed for this weeks menu.
My family is going to be doing a pantry challenge for as long as we can to rotate out many of our pantry items. We still haven’t come up with a budget for fresh produce but currently are thinking $10 for those loss leader items each week. We have 3 hefty financial goals to meet this coming year and this will push us closer to that goal.

I think that's why it's always important to slowly stock up on some pantry items when we have a little extra money. Buying spices gradually is a must, and I always get the cheaper little containers. I didn't use to think that far ahead or have the extra space, but I am doing better now.

I would start with the basic meals you like to eat. Do you like spaghetti and meat balls? Then buy the spaghetti, sauce, and learn how to make your own meatballs. Once you master those, learn to make your own sauce. Consider taking a little money each week and grabbing those things that last "forever" like pasta, rice (white), canned meats, oats, etc. Watch videos and learn to cook easy meals. I think you can do this. Everyone can learn basic cooking strategies.

Soups are insanely easy. When I have no energy I just dump a quart of broth and a bag of frozen veggies into a pan, bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for ~20 mins. Then I start sniffing whatever spices I have in the cupboard and throw in something that smells good, taste it, and continue repeating until the flavor is something I want to eat. Hate my outcome? Add more broth to dilute and try again. Throw in a bit of leftover precooked grain, or noodles, or instant rice, or chopped cabbage for more body. Change the flavor by adding a can of diced tomatoes.
