Sonic and Sega franchise characters race against each other. It was great to see Alex Kidd, Opa opa of Fantasy Zone, Ryo Hazuki of Shenmue and even Mobo from Bonanza Bros all in one place! Finished the Grand Prix mode and beat all the missions collecting all the stars. The ending music is awesome, too. There is also the time trial and single race modes which are nothing but the same tracks that you beat which you can play and beat your record.

I played this on the school bus all the time with my friends because I didn't have Mario Kart DS at that time.
I personally prefer this to Mario Kart, just because I am a sonic fanboy 😂
I played this on the school bus with my friends cause we all agreed that Sonic was better than Mario so we bought the game.

It's actually impressive just how gloriously faithful this version is compared to the home console/PC versions. Most DS versions of console games were completely different spin-offs or vastly cut back to near-unrecognisability, but this is basically the full game in portable format. Even more respectable ports such as Pac-Man World 3 saw massive cutbacks. Don't even get me started on EA's ports.
A shame we never got a PSP version of S&SASR, that would have been impressive to see. Likewise, Sumo did such a good job on the PSP version of Outrun 2006, I'd like to have seen how they'd have managed that on a DS.
They did this port really great, i just wonder how'd they screw up the transformed 3DS port. The DS version of this game didn't have bugs or framerate drops, and it did really well on that hardware. The 3DS is more powerful than DS, yet the transformed port is filled with fps drops and bugs. and also has the battle modes and most challenges removed. i just really wonder what the fuck happened.

Transformed’s 3DS port is also basically the console version in portable form, and I love that. Well, aside from battle mode.
I remember (well this morning at least) when, in one of the missions, Amy keeps saying "Oh no" until Knuckles said "Shut up".

It looks like the people bellow me forgot that the DS is a N64 on steroids. This game looks amazing on the DS for what the hardware could do. It has better graphics than many N64 games, but it's not as good as the console versions. It seems worth a purchase to me for sure.

not a bad version at all! the amount of detail in this game is really impressive , and it has all the characters and some tracks from the console version and exclusive tracks too
Combined with Mario & Sonic and Mario Kart, I broke the R button on my DSi playing this because I played it so much. True story.

My DSi has issues with the bumpers. Try blowing into them. It fixes it sometimes.

I'm amazed... not that they were able to port the console/PC game to DS, but rather because they were bothered to. (seriously, you should see *most* licensed DS games that share their names with console games!)

Holy shit. I considered buying this back in the day, but then I thought about the game in comparison to other DS racers I had played, and just assumed it would be trash. This actually looks to be pretty damn close for the DS!

@@Matanumi- I agree! The ONLY thing MKDS wins out completely hands down is the framerate. It's not as stable as DS, but it's FAR better than the 360!
And for a handheld, that's DAMN impressive!
I wanna cry dude I remember going with my mom everyday once a week for something she had to do and they had wifi and that was comoatible eith the ds unlike home wifi and playing with random people. Id see the same 3 people every tuesday night and we would spam the reafy button and wait till we all have it on ready. Good times.

Amazing how good this game is. This is the only instance of a third party racing game actually topping the quality of that systems Mario Kart.

It’s funny how I didn’t buy any other sonic games after that which I just noticed.
I still have Rush Adventure, but I lost this game sadly and I loved it.
Even though I only knew the Sonic cast back then I got to know some of Segas characters.
I will one day rebuy it and then try it again. I remember many maps and characters, but I also forgot them kind off.

How is the Wii version compared to the PS3/Xbox 360 version (if you know)?
***** Well the unique part of the Wii port is that you can play as your Miis and the Wii Wheel is also an optional controller, so in reality its kinda like Mario Kart Wii. But I still thought it was fun.

@@PresStar2Play The Wii version is exactly the same as the HD versions. EXACTLY. Only difference is that it doesn't have motion blur and ofc isn't HD. Every version of Sonic and Sega All stars racing is different. The PS3 version is the only true vanilla version. The 360 version had the exclusive Avatar's and Banjo Kazooie, the Wii version looks a tiny bit watered down from the console version and also had the exclusive Mii characters, the DS version ofc is handheld and has different graphics entirety from the console and I think it's own modes etc. You know how it is. The mobile version is also the similar to the ds but it's HD. Kinda hard to explain. It also has its in game differences. And the Java version.... Yh u know what that would be like

What a banger game. I remember getting it from my local games library in 2011. I played the shit outta it. I just bought it for 8€ on eBay. Gonna be a nice thing in my collection.

For a DS version, this isn’t half bad. This is easily the weakest version, but it’s on a handheld so that makes sense.

Look at all the born-in-4K gamers crying that the graphics are shit, reminder HD on consoles wasn't even a thing when the DS came out and this runs at a higher framerate than the console versions.

The treetops map is actually you probably won’t believe but the pc/Xbox/ps/wii version backwards
I do believe the DS version's stages are less hazard-y and smaller to accomodate for its limits. That, and the racer count is 6 and not 8.
Perhaps this version is a bit easier than the consoles, which are tougher but more fun?

Dude I love this game and I like it more than Mario Kart DS. Don't get me wrong, MKDS is awesome but I had more fun with this game.
The problem with this game is that in terms of driving it is not as intuitive as Mario Kart DS in my opinion, but the rest is fine.
