I still don't understand why people do art on X. The format of the website blows and the community is mad toxic. Like, the media tab is only good on PC where it actually has a gallery layout. Artists like to use X as both a personal blog AND an art portfolio (save for the ocassional good few that make a second account because they realize maybe the people following them for art don't care about what they have to say), which dramatically overcrowds their feed.
I understand that X is "the public square" where you can potentially find more of an audience, but X is also notorious for shadowing even remotely risque accounts and having some of the worst people on the internet there sans old tumblr.

The ironic thing with them is that for all their AI hate, they are very bad at actually spotting AI, because they have never tried to use or even understand AI. Humans make mistakes, and so does AI. But the kind of mistakes are very different, because with humans, there's still a train of thought behind the mistake, while with AI, it's a pattern that breaks down in a non-sensical way.

I come from the "old" days of posting art on art specific sites. I was on fanartcentral, elfwood, deviantart to name a few. I'd never seen the level of Twitter nonsense back then, but then again, the only people who'd congregate on these sites were either artists themselves (like me) or people who loved and appreciated the craft. Twitter is an amalgamation of all sorts of people. I feel for modern and young artists now who have to contend with the current internet... at least some oldie like me can point to our history as documented by years of work in various art galleries but newer artists probably don't have as much of that.
I think we're going to end up seeing a return to more traditional art in the future, or a resurgence if you will. Video, photos and scans may still get scrutinized but maybe not as much. Or perhaps artists will have to find other means to share their work.
I'm not very thrilled with AI either but I've sort of resigned myself to the fact it probably isn't going away. I just don't want to see it replace the need for creative people.

    • @kitalalaris

Twitter is where all the Tumblr refugees ended up after Tumblr banned their horny posting because they wanted to appease Google. Tumblr is where this witch hunt mentality comes from, and it was bad even when the website first started. Too many prepubescents with too much free time and not enough activity outside, so they wormed their way into the worst of fandom cesspools and then spread it around outside its allotted containment. And *now* they think it's normal.

As an aspiring artist, I've this to say.
I loathe AI content for the most part, and i consider it another factor that is detrimental to the human condition.
But see, the problem is, there's certainly a toxic artist culture too that for the longest time since 2014 has targeted and harassed people for "wrongthink". I can remember stories of people being bullied for drawing a character wrong (Rose Quartz incident, a fan was bullied to suicide for drawing the character thinner, i think).
Theres been the "i fixed it!" Mentality where artists would "fix" someone's art by redrawing it completely differently, and smugly saying your art was terrible.
There was the trend of some of these twitter/tumblr artists who'd complain about a "person of colour" being coloured slightly lighter in shading, or complain the art was too "Eurocentric" and thus racist. I myself got into an argument years ago with someone accusing me of being a racist, because they were accusing an artist for "perpetuating racism and Eurocentrism" in their art about drawing faces.
Hell, i saw some artists being shamed for not drawing "realistic body types".
Saying this, while i dislike AI for how soulless and ghoulish the technology is in its primary purpose, i can understand why many people would choose that over certain artists from Twitter, who have a big attitude problem, overcharge their work, and often support things that are counter to the working class families.
For the longest time, art has felt hollow because it feels uninspired, its repetitive and slop. Maybe we have only ourselves the consumers to blame, but i digress.
The Art community needs to improve as a community, and be welcoming to people. People need an incentive to support people over AI, otherwise it only speaks volumes how divided we truly are.

    • @WinterSoldier7207
      @WinterSoldier7207 17 часов назад +4

Absolutely underrated comment, and I guess the art has felt uninspired in part because the internet as a whole has been trying to stamp out wrongthink and anything deemed too radical as a whole.
Other parts including the pure fact that it's a black hole for attention spans and idle thoughts, boredom being an unsung mother of creativity.

People overestimate their ability to spot AI-generated imagery. Reason being:
    1. They overestimate their artistic knowledge
    2. AI technology is getting better
If you think someone is using AI and you don’t like that, just block them and be done with it ffs.

    • @FrankHarwald
      @FrankHarwald 17 часов назад +4

      3. a lot of artist who actually use AI are using what's known as pre- & post-processing to hide the most obvious errors of AI generators so unless you're looking at a completely incompetent or lazy AI prompter it's, even for experienced artists & other AI users themselves, difficult of spotting the use of AI use
      4. newer & more advanced AI art generators cannot just create drawing from prompts in various styles but also very convincing art drawing process videos making AI art detecting even more difficult to detect.
      5. another way that AI prompters prevent the detection of them using NN generator tools is by either cropping the output (so that the images resolution is not an exact power of 2 which is what most generators would output raw)
      6. yet another way that AI prompters prevent detection is by starting from an existing template & then doing multiple generations on that image at different levels of fidelity/variability & then combine the results using simple stencil masks differently at different parts of the image depending on how well each generation got at which part
      7. on top of all the previous, a lot of AI prompters _do not indicate_ anywhere on their sites anywhere anymore that they did use AI.
bottom line: it's increasingly impossible even for experienced art collectors & connaisseurs to make out the difference between a hand drawn & AI generated image.

@@jackhazardous4008 Unfortunately, people value Twitter and whatever goes on it far too much and there's way too many people using it. That's just the grim reality of it. It's mainstream and it will never go truly go away. At the least, the death of Twitter would just make it transform into another social media site with all the same controlled algorithms and toxicity spewed from all fronts, provided they don't outright become worse than Twitter itself.
There's still niche uses for the site just like with Reddit that don't include playing stupid games and winning stupid prizes by engaging in acts of temper tantrums with random strangers on the net which is why the normies stick around.
So no matter how awful the platform is, it's impossible to let it go because it can potentially be the only way to gain a following such as for artists. It's the place where most people will hear about you and there's no changing that because that's the nature of mainstream social media.

You ever thought that rather than looking at is as replacement, it could be cooperation? Just like how technicians made photoshop with all its filters and clean-up tools? Or how technicians made computers to use in the first place? With the nice "undo" feature to erase the mess the artist made? Seems to me that technicians are pretty quickly tossed aside by a select group of artists when they no longer deem them useful. Tell every artist to go back to painting on rock walls with mud. See how well you do without technicians.

Creating images with AI really is no more than a toy or a crutch.
It sounds cool on paper, to be able to create anything you can imagine or have the AI create fanart of your favorite characters, shows or games, but after creating just a few you will likely notice how AI art is literally soulless. Yeah, it can be really good, shockingly so, but it simply will never compare to the weight that a real piece of fanart has, that someone spend time and effort into creating.
Though sadly some people don't get that and are only concerned with the end result, telling you that if you can't even tell if it's AI or not there is no difference. Sure, it might not be visible and AI art can even be superior to what an artist can actually do, but that's not the point really. Fanart exists to show appreciation for something you love, while AI generated pictures basically just come off a conveyor belt. Sure, someone had to put in the prompts and fine-tune the image and that can take some effort, but it doesn't compare to what a real artist does.
Similarly that's also why I think that text-AIs are just toys, you can't actually chat with them like you can with a person, so they won't replace real social interactions anytime soon.
They are incredibly useful tools though, having it aid you in programming, trouble shooting or as a teacher can be great.
