  • We spent almost two days in the Russian regional city Kaluga and this trip was great. We walked about 21 km around the city, have visited the biggest space museum in Russia and the old house of Tsiolkovsky - a USSR space engineer. We got up on the Orthodox church's bell tower, spent 5 hours in total on suburban public transport with a toddler, and just had a lot of fun.
    It would be my biggest pleasure if you join us and enjoy this trip too by watching this vlog✨
    Thank you so much💛

I think that I speak for many people here who enjoy getting a peek into a world that we would normally not ever see. You have a talent for making these virtual trips, whether it is to a supermarket, a thrift shop or to another town like Kaluga in this video, an amazing immersive experience where we feel welcomed. As an American growing up during the cold war, I was surprised to see so many beautiful churches in Kaluga. I had assumed all of these lovely structures were demolished during Communism. In fact the whole cultural flavor seems to be hopeful and positive even considering the political nuance of the era. I don't think Americans were getting the entire story of Russia during that period in world history. Thanks for a great video, it made my day.

    • @maryvalentine9090
      @maryvalentine9090 3 года назад +19

      I was thinking the same thing. The Cold War was a really unfortunate time. I still have all kinds of crazy preconceived ideas about Russia and the former Soviet union. Seeing all those remnants of the Soviet era on this video actually made me feel a little bit tense. Then I had to laugh at myself. Just part of their history and culture. I pray for the peace and prosperity of Russia. I want them to prosper and be happy and free.

      Some churches were demolished if there was need for that - to build something new on there location. But many were just transformed into utility building, like warehouse, schools or hospital. As a kid i was hospitalized into hospital which was a monastery before the revolution.

    Before the pandemic, I had the privilege of travelling a lot - for work.
    Normal for me was a different country every week, 4 flights per week, usually via Amsterdam, because my local airport, BHX, doesn't have direct flights to most of the places I needed to go.
    Never been to Russia, but the architecture and scenery in Kaluga remind me of Vilnius and Tallin.
    I always stay in apartments rather than hotels if possible (apartments are not common in some countries) - gives me chance to visit local shops to get food.
    I agree with you that there are always places to see - have found something pleasant, interesting and educational in every place I've visited.

    I grew up really poor in the US, but my parents always took us to places that were inexpensive and nearby. Local parks and hiking trails are totally free, after all. I never got to go to Disney as a child, but that didn't mean I felt neglected or like I missed out on something. I went to fisheries and local farms, parks and trails, beautiful places, art shows and performances. My parents really made the most of what we had, and I think I grew up better for their ingenuity.

The one they’re on in the video are just regular regional trains that will stop on each and every small platform in the middle of nowhere so people in those remote regions can get to their respective area capitals, thus they’re slow. Yes, I totally agree with you about local traveling. I live in Lithuania and my family and I really like to see places around us. We have like 5 bigger cities, but we very often visit places where only like 5 thousand people live, and there is still so many places to see and visit in that tiny city or just near it. We used to do this all my life and I remember every little trip we had. Great memories!

    I love the salute for Texas. I live in Pampa Texas and this was fantastic to see. Travel is a wonderful thing to see and do. You are right about travelling local to see the different sites and things to do in the smaller cities in your area. The Buildings that you are showing have beautiful architecture and decorations and Artworks reminding us of all of our humanities and we are all here.

    I really love your thoughts on local traveling an interesting places. To be honest... I always thought there's nothing to see in my town... I'm 40 now and just a few days ago I learned that we've a little temple in our town (since 1968!!!!) I was shocked that I didn't know about! Also just learned about our little Town Gallery, where local artists can exhibit their art two years ago... I was born here in this town, but always thought there's nothing to see.... man, was I wrong! And when you talked about local traveling I felt guilty of being someone like you mentioned, instantly... because I am... or I was... 'cause now I want to see those places I didn't know about.
    You also can visit our bell tower.... the only problem (for me) is that it's getting very tight the more you go upstairs. ^^''' Which is the only reason I haven't checked it out until now, because I really love churches, bell towers, old houses and everything old (from the 18ths and the beginning of the 19th Century). So I really enjoyed watching your video, 'cause you showed so much I really adore. :-)
    Have an awesome week and lots of love from Germany! :-)

      Funnily I'm also from Germany and I had the same experience. I grew up in a suburb of about 2000 inhabitants and only about 5 years ago we realized that there used to be a manor (Rittergut) there, starting in the early 17th century and the old knight's graves are a 5 minute walk away from my house. It was fascinating. I actually love having friends from other cities or countries visit me because that way I always discover awesome things to see that aren't far away.

    • @LeeZetLMG
      @LeeZetLMG 3 года назад +1

      @@airotkiv We also have a Rittergut here, so I was pretty startled at first, when I read it ;) But I think there are many of those all over Germany, right? But it's pretty amazing when you realise it's that near to you. So awesome! :-) I'm living in a small town with a population a bit under 20.000 people... it's a nice town and I enjoy living here. :)

    You, your husband and your little girl bring a little sunshine into my day! 😊 BTW - I agree with you that it's best to travel locally. I live in a cute little country town in Northern Vermont, USA. (I love living here!) I used to want to travel across the USA to see places like Washington DC and the Grand Canyon. But it's lots of fun to take a bus and see Vermont's state capitol, Montpelier, about 47 kilometers away. I like to visit the small stores and just walk around. I hope you can google Montpelier, Vermont and see how pretty it is!

A bonus about going to 'unpopular' places is that you avoid big crowds of tourists 😁 So fun to get to see the space museum! My mother actually met Gagarin when she was a child. I love this video! I am American, and visited Russia only once, but this made me "homesick" for things I remember. I love that all your cities have such respectful memorials for soldiers, and also they are full of art everywhere - statues, paintings, architecture and sculptures on the buildings. So many old buildings are still standing. Maybe not always in the best repair, but they are not torn down. The churches are gorgeous! And I agree - the old homes of famous people, are so interesting! In the US, if a building looks old, usually it is torn down to build something new - but that means a loss of history.
    I love how the plants are green and growing like crazy in the summer there - and how they are allowed to grow a little bit wild. I love the scenes from the train and bus, showing the countryside - I visited a sweet family in a town in Siberia, and the countryside there is also beautiful! The yellow field near the end - is it sunflowers? I always think of sunflowers in Russia!
    I am especially excited by the Space Museum in Kaluga!! If I visit Russia again, I want to go there! There is a similar museum a few hours away from me, in Huntsville, Alabama. Some of my relatives and friends have worked for NASA, and I think space exploration is so interesting! Even though there was tension between the USA and CCCP, I am grateful for how it pushed the US to grow in space exploration, and how all the world has benefited from the work of our two space agencies (and other countries' space agencies now also).
    I like what you say about enjoying local travel. I belong to a Facebook group that shares ideas for local travel around our state. So many beautiful places I did not know!
    Thank you again!

Enjoying the sights, the sounds and the beauty of places around you while spending them with your loved ones is happiness itself.

What I'd like from you is if you could tell us what items cost, you know, a meal, tea, bus ticket, train ticket, etc. Also if you could tell us how things work over there as far as what the government gives its citizens free and what you get discounts on. Kaluga's wacky weather reminds me of our weather here in Seattle, Washington! Although it is super sunny and warm right now :) . This particular video is an excellent travel vlog and made me miss traveling so much. I miss the wandering around a town or city and just enjoying the process of discovery. I loved how you shared your father's philosophy about traveling in that any place can be a wonderful place to visit! Also, I really like it when you take time to talk and share things. In my opinion it creates an atmosphere of the intimacy of friendship even though we are all online and have never met! Question: who is the cellist of the cello music you added to the part of the video when you are exploring museums in Kaluga?
    I look forward to your videos, thank you so much for sharing!
