he's a beautiful horse and he jumps well but he would be able to jump even better if the jumps were spaced out correctly, they are too short for his stride.
xStateofSleepx They're spaced at show jumping distance, what needs to happen is that the horse, with a rider should be pulled into a rounder canter that would be perfect for this spacing. (hope that made sense)
It may be too short for his stride however at competitions they won't alter the distance between combinations for you, will they? By doing this it is teaching him to collect himself and use his muscles more. Using perfect distances all the time won't help when you compete :)
Ellie Bruton no, they don’t need to make custom distances for the horses stride but at least a CORRECT space between the fences, the horse doesn’t know if it’s a bounce or a one-stride combination
I'm sorry. The striding between the last two jumps was wrong. They should've shortened it or made it longer because he was having a difficult time getting through the line than if it was spaced correctly.
Totally agree! Even the first two pols were to close to each other cause he jumped them both :D if you want an in out shorten the last two if you want one stride in between make it longer . ! He did try so hard to make it work!! :)
Anna Elliott I agree you can definitely see that he’s jumping the first two fine but after that he was shortening or lengthening his strides wayyyyy too much
Lovely horse but help him out by putting the correct distance between the jumps. One stride is too short for him and a bounce is too long teaching him to jump long and flat, no use for showjumping. This is not a negitive comment, its a tip. Any real horseman would appreaciate some help and be willing to learn for there animals sake.
+Marla Gostisha I am just taking a guess but he seams like a very energetic horse and with all that energy they use the whips to make themselfs bigger to help guide the horse to the jumps
+Marla Gostisha You use lunge whips when you are father away from the horse to give the horse cues and direction. You don't hit the horse with it- and I'm assuming the horse knows how to lunge on a lunge line- You can tell by the horse's body language he isn't afraid of the whips at all. 4 people? Because it's a large ring, and they're pushing him out to the railing so he uses all of the ring, rather than cutting corners.
What a beautiful stride length! If I could buy him I would. He obv tries so hard. I mean he could lift his legs legs a little when jumping but otherwise fabbbb
lovely horse and to keep that great attitude going the handlers should def make sure he's taking the one stride towards the end consistently as an one stride before making it so big (he bounced it several times). also bounces are great for backing off a bold horse or sharpening up a sloppy one. not so good for a unsure horse who is rusty/inexperienced
He obviously isnt tired or being forced to do this, alot of horses Ive seen do this after being unable to jump for a long period of time or when you try to build them back up to jumping after an injury.
Their making his do this, ik they were schooling him, but the jumps tho, they need spacing out just a little bit, because he's bucking after, and like they said, he could jump over the back fence. But apart from that, beautiful horse, beautiful strides but just a little more space so he can get those strides in while he's jumping! Great vid!! 🙂
Okay, to all the people saying this is abuse, This is really not abuse, I've been riding for 14 years now. I think I would know. Yes, the strides are a bit too close but the horse is not scared nor being abused. I really think that people who are constantly calling this abuse is retarded. This horse has lots of space and is probably treated like royalty most of the time, as you can see at 1:03, they have a whip. The whip is to give contact and tell the horse where it needs to go, it's not going to hurt the horse, even if they were using the whip for that the whip wouldn't hurt the horse, it gives them a tiny tap. Now, please stop saying this is abuse because it is not. Thank you, Ashley.
The strides between the jumps were not necessarily wrong. He was running around the arena like a freight train, so the poles just said “hey, back off a lil.” One of the biggest mistakes I made when training my thoroughbred we lengthening all strides if he struggled to fit himself in, because he now does not have the necessary muscles to sit back and jump from an energetic, but shorter strides canter. In the end, this will benefit this horse more so than hurt the horse. Near the end, you can see he is not longer struggling with the striding as much, because he learned how to adjust himself. If a horse is going on a move collected canter and can’t make it work, yeah, probs needs more room. But this horse did not in my opinion.
I know this was a long time ago but they are telling him to slow down yet they’re still waving the lunge whips around so he’s clearly not going to slow down. They also need to put the jumps out properly. They’re too far away the last ones should be 8 strides which is one canter stride plus take off and landing
it seems like the jump is to far for one stride and to short for two strides. i'm not being negative but you can notice he is jumping to far on one stride and when he goes for two strides he has to lif his feet quickly or lateish. plz don't take this in a negative way, i'm not trying to :)
@EquiMinny - in response to "Can people shut up about striding " and "Who cares if they aren't spaced correctly?" In my opinion, that would be anyone who would hate to see that lovely horse ruined by a bad spill that resulted from sloppy spacing. Or see his confidence shaken because he was not given an opportunity to build it with proper spacing that helps him establish a rhythm he can count on, a rhythm that "makes sense" to his sensibilities, that rewards his natural stride. To ask a young horse (or any horse brand new to jumping) to have to break his flow in order to adjust to distances set for someone else's stride (like a 13-hand pony, for instance), is not horse-friendly training. The ability to collect and lengthen to meet various striding challenges is a skill that comes with experience and has no place in a first jumping session, when the horse is just getting used to the feel of jumping. The *horse's* rhythm should be respected. A competent trainer understands the importance of this. It is key to building confidence. But then, I saw nothing in this video that would engender that horse's confidence Hopefully he turned out alright, and didn't become a dirty stopper because he was sent straight to 3rd grade with no opportunity to be in kindergarten, or 1st grade, or 2nd. 4 or 5 people with whips, "encouraging" him ... not once asking him to stop and rest and be reassured. Not the kind of training I would hope for, when I am the horse.
this is not meant as a mean or hateful comment! just as a tip! so the striding between the last two jumps was incorrect, you would either have to make it shorter or longer. As you can see in the video he was having trouble either doing 1 stride or 1 and 1/2 strides. This will teach your horse bad habits and make it harder for you to ride him on his back. Again, this is not a hate comment. Just a tip to improve your horses jumping
Can people shut up about striding and "he looks terrified"?! Clearly he hasn't ever jumped before like this, or he's not very experienced. Horses can be anxious and very energetic when they first start. And who cares if they aren't spaced correctly? It teaches him to collect and extend when approaching a jump to hit the jump just right. Maybe YOU people need to open your eyes. It seems like everyone on the Internet is finding things to pick out and fight about. They did nothing wrong here. So chill out. The real horse people on here know what they're talking about.
the striding was very off between the jumps and they should’ve made the stride longer and maybe taken away one of the poles at the front of the jumps to make it easy for him
Think about show jumping or cross country, they will not move the jumps to have the correct stride for the horse or ride so it teaches the horse how to collect its strides
Rachel Peters actually you can 😂😂😂😂 My horse was scared of something in the ring.... I trained him to keep his focus away from the item..... now he's not scared of it
1 Stride between two jumps = 6-7 meters between the two fences An In-out (=two jumps with no stride inbetween) should be ca 3-3.5 meters between the two fences If you do anything else (like 4.5 meters) it becaomes abit dangerous for horse and rider
My god people. Say whatever you want but the striding is NOT wrong. In the video the people say 'he hasn't jumped in a while'. So he just needed to remember the collecting and extending of the trot and canter before a jump. The striding is fine.
he's a beautiful horse and he jumps well but he would be able to jump even better if the jumps were spaced out correctly, they are too short for his stride.
my thought exactly. most of their free jumping videos the jumps are waaaaayyy too close to each other.
xStateofSleepx They're spaced at show jumping distance, what needs to happen is that the horse, with a rider should be pulled into a rounder canter that would be perfect for this spacing. (hope that made sense)
yes i understand that, but that should be done with a rider, not when loose schooling. :)
xStateofSleepx It would seem that way.
its to teach collection
he's absolutely beautiful but the strides in-between each jump is incorrect
Beautiful horse, his canter and trot are amazing
It may be too short for his stride however at competitions they won't alter the distance between combinations for you, will they? By doing this it is teaching him to collect himself and use his muscles more. Using perfect distances all the time won't help when you compete :)
Exactly! This will definitely benefit him in the long run :)
EXACTLY!
StirrupsInRein Also, a rider will be able to move the horse into a rounder canter that would be perfect for showjumping.
Thank you! All these people are saying: '' Learn some striding would you?'' or '' His stride is wrong".
Ellie Bruton no, they don’t need to make custom distances for the horses stride but at least a CORRECT space between the fences, the horse doesn’t know if it’s a bounce or a one-stride combination
I'm sorry. The striding between the last two jumps was wrong. They should've shortened it or made it longer because he was having a difficult time getting through the line than if it was spaced correctly.
they needed to lengthen the distance between all the rails, especially the last two
Totally agree! Even the first two pols were to close to each other cause he jumped them both :D if you want an in out shorten the last two if you want one stride in between make it longer . ! He did try so hard to make it work!! :)
Anna Elliott I agree you can definitely see that he’s jumping the first two fine but after that he was shortening or lengthening his strides wayyyyy too much
100%
Anna Elliott I noticed!
Well said. I wholeheartedly agree. Putting more challenging striding to let him figure out comes later.
That horse's gaits look so nice.
I love this horse! Looks so much like my OTTB that, coincidentally, I will be free jumping for the first time tomorrow!
This horse has such stunning paces
Learn some striding would you?
IlyLilly bae they shorten that because at shows the course will be built to challenge the striding
You don’t have to be rude.
He is a very beautiful horse I love the way he moves and I loved it when he kicked out.
The sound of those hooves against the ground....aaahhh love it
He is really good in free jumping he has got a lot of potential, I hope he will do show jumping too
Strides are wrong... They are WAY too shorts between each poles/jumps.
Mélanie Roussel thats why he was jumping it as an oxer
Mélanie RousselL xh
Mélanie Roussel there's something called a bounce
Mélanie Roussel no there not i jump my big horses with those strides
@Melanie Roussel that is a bounce its when there are no strides unless the horse adds one
Is he a thouroghbred? He looks like one. He is very beautiful. I love watching you guys do this.
I wish I had an arena to free jump my pony like that!!!! Beautiful horse BTW!!!!!!!!!
He’s a Beautiful horse!
Beautiful horse!
so funny hahahahahahaha thank you so much for putting this on RUclips
Della Byers wtf?
Why do you need 4 people with whips to make the horse jump?!
+Marla Gostisha I am just taking a guess but he seams like a very energetic horse and with all that energy they use the whips to make themselfs bigger to help guide the horse to the jumps
Exactly!

4 people? Because it's a large ring, and they're pushing him out to the railing so he uses all of the ring, rather than cutting corners.
Ella because the arena is so big
Ella so that he went all the way arojnd the arena so its not hard on his body to turn sharp
He is a beautiful horse and beautiful jumper but the jumps are either too short or too long for his stride.
I love that pony it is a very good jumper and A very big area
Wishave you were on it?
Isabelle Richards it's not a pony
It’s not a pony it’s a horses
Thank you, finally a good comment!
Ten kůň je krásný:) Video také:)
i love how he jumps the first 2 poles as one. is he broken?
He's gorgeous, what are you doing with him in the video? 😍
What a beautiful stride length! If I could buy him I would. He obv tries so hard. I mean he could lift his legs legs a little when jumping but otherwise fabbbb
They didn't space the jumps out correctly
In a show they won't alter it for your horses store and the rider and horse will have to adjust so this is just helping the horse.
lovely horse and to keep that great attitude going the handlers should def make sure he's taking the one stride towards the end consistently as an one stride before making it so big (he bounced it several times). also bounces are great for backing off a bold horse or sharpening up a sloppy one. not so good for a unsure horse who is rusty/inexperienced
beautiful horse you have there what breed????
Is it broken yet, if not this horse will be a great jumper
Do hope they have him going both directions. Different approaches.
He obviously isnt tired or being forced to do this, alot of horses Ive seen do this after being unable to jump for a long period of time or when you try to build them back up to jumping after an injury.
The last two jumps/ poles are either too close together to be one stride or two far apart for the bounce stride.
he would be a fantastic eventer
Someone seems to be having a ball.
He is so beautiful
He is beautiful

What a beauty!
The stridings wrong
Ikr! They were practically setting up a bunch of bounce jumps! his strides so big and they set them up so tiny:(
I feel a bit sorry for him x
same:(
They are going to ruin him :( x
Ikr😭
Sent from my iPhone
Beautiful horse
Is it just me or are the two last jumps wrongly spaced. He has to take a really un-naturally long stride in between the two.
beacause he does not collect him he just jumps
Do you breed em if so breed him he looks like a championship horses
Gorgeous horse!! Really nice mover :)
0:42 I guess it's been awhile since he has been able to get his ya yas out! Lol
Jacquelin Alfaro lol
Is this at shamrock ranch in Pacifica, CA!!??
How tall is he 16.3 or something???
it seems like the jump is to far for one stride and to short for two strides. i'm not being negative but you can notice he is jumping to far on one stride and when he goes for two strides he has to lif his feet quickly or lateish. plz don't take this in a negative way, i'm not trying to :)

Wrong distance between last two jumps
That was really weird when that girl said " I guess it's been a long time since he's been able to get his ya has out!

Lovely horse. And arena.
That horse s beautiful
Was sind das für abstände
You need 4 people with wips to make a horse do something it looks like he enjoys ?
Emily Shirey "whips"
Ya Ya I knew I did that the second I hit post
You need to move out the last jump and the first poles.
Beautiful Horse
He knows what to do!!!
he is so handsome!
he is beautiful my tilly would love him lol
Is she a thourabread but if not sertenly she has the ability to be a racer
+Toffee Paradise thourabread LOL its thoroughbred
*certainly
Toffee Paradise learn to spell
stop making fun of her she’s probably better than you just shut up. So What if your grammar isn’t the best??
what is the noise in the background because it's very annoying
Can people shut up about striding and "he looks terrified"?! Clearly he hasn't ever jumped before like this, or he's not very experienced. +EquiMinny OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH. LORD.
hahahahahaha 😂😂😂😂
Obviously he is frightened they have whips out, for him to supposedly free jump.
So I have a horse and the striding is so wrong that's super dangerous
shouldn't the horse be wearing jumping boots!?
They should the way they are moving him so fast and the height
mmsmarine may I pull your attention here www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/archive/index.php/t-267016.html
mmsmarine old comment but, the horse is. the white things on his/her front legs are boots
oh yes i see now :D thanks
the striding was very off between the jumps and they should’ve made the stride longer and maybe taken away one of the poles at the front of the jumps to make it easy for him
The horse was having difficulty jumping because the strides are wrong
The spacing is wrong and I think he needs a little rest in between his breathing is very hard
OK, no need to comment about wrong strides and stuff like that anymore we’ll hear it it’s like 100% of the comments is that so never be now. 😃
wow good training:D
The strides made the horse fall almost every time he went over. This wasn't fair for him, if you want to learn something to a horse, do it correctly!
+Julia Heijkoop ikr its not fair at all to make him squeeze a stride in between the last one or take a huge jump
and they were just laughing
Think about show jumping or cross country, they will not move the jumps to have the correct stride for the horse or ride so it teaches the horse how to collect its strides
I could be wrong but it kinda looks likes he is not really enjoying this
Striding btw last two barrels/jumps is too short expecially for a horse with a big canter like him. He is really good and talented
Everytime i free jump my horse she jumps the gate instead😂😂
I think they got the distances wrong...
No they want him to collect him more late answer i know
I want this horse :0
Lovely
Strides are incorrect. To short and to long. Make sure you correct them.
You cannot train a horse out of fear.
i dont see any fear?!
Rachel Peters actually you can 😂😂😂😂 My horse was scared of something in the ring.... I trained him to keep his focus away from the item..... now he's not scared of it
He isn’t afraid because if he was, it would tell you in the body language, he wouldn’t of gone over the jumps and he would try and get away from them
If you want a horse to free jump then make the strides right
the last part is to far apart for a bounce but not far enuf apart for a stride that's why hes jumping so crukid
Cause this isn't panicking the horse is it? It is.
Such a honest horse, going as good as he can for the stupid people setting the strides wrong
I also forgot that there are competitions for free jumping horses X.X
Them first 2 were too close together and the last big one was too far away!
Jumps are wayy to close together
1 Stride between two jumps = 6-7 meters between the two fences
An In-out (=two jumps with no stride inbetween) should be ca 3-3.5 meters between the two fences
If you do anything else (like 4.5 meters) it becaomes abit dangerous for horse and rider
My god people. Say whatever you want but the striding is NOT wrong. In the video the people say 'he hasn't jumped in a while'. So he just needed to remember the collecting and extending of the trot and canter before a jump. The striding is fine.
Yente Tak say what you want but the poles are not spaced even enough.
Yente Tak Rachel Perlman strides are fine, it's the distance between the jump doesn't suit his strides and makes it harder for him
the spacing is wrong btw
In a show they won't alter it for your horses store and the rider and horse will have to adjust so this is just helping the horse.
Ya know... given his conformation I kind of expected him to jump better. Better behind and with his front end.
The jumps are placed too close together, I don't think he could jump better if he wanted to in that short space in that short amount of time.
The distance is not correct-´-
The striding is set out terribly
I think it was an accident that he turned around! I
