I always believed that the reason why Hiccup lost his left leg is because it was the leg that was attached to the metal contraption he invented to steer Toothless' metal fin(?). Since metal is the best heat conductor, his left leg got damaged the most from the fire. That's why Gobber said something about Toothless saving most of him, I think the fire just got to his leg faster than the rest of his body cause of the metal before Toothless could hug him. And yes, this movie always melts my face off. It's terribly sad.
I think since toothlesses mouth was close to hiccup. Toothless tried to catch hiccup with his mouth and since his leg was closest he bit onto it and bit it off. Hence hiccups reaction to his kid asking what happened to his leg😭
7:13 I actually love the changes in Astrid's design from the first film to this one (and into the final film which obviously I won't mention here). In HTTYD 1, Astrid has a very unapproachable and tough hairstyle (since we are seeing things from Hiccup's POV). The back of her hair is tightly tied up, since she's always ready for a battle (and having your hair out or away from your body is a risk in a fight) - this also makes her look a bit 'uptight' and she's also almost always stressed out from the pressure of living up to expectations, fighting giant beasts, and protecting her clan forever. Her fringe sits over half her face, hiding her slightly from everyone and also making her look a bit angsty. After Hiccup and Toothless take her on her first dragon ride, and she sees Hiccup for who he really is, she pushes her hair out of her eye for the first time so that he (and we) can see her entire face. He gets to look her in the eyes when he talks to her, whereas before he avoided her stare. She lets him in! In HTTYD 2, her hair is much softer now, representing how she has softened and also doesn't have to live in fear of a fight at all times - the way her hair is looser and bounces around when she moves is so free! Her hair is on the side now, and in a braid - which wouldn't be very practical for battle, but she’s more relaxed about it now. There hasn’t been as much war in the last five years since HTTYD 1, so she can choose aesthetic over function. Her clothing shows this change, and the way she stands is so much more casual!
This movie is definitely my favorite of all 3 of them just because of the emotional damage I've taken. Deep inside I wish that Stoick didn’t need to die but also another part of me realized that his death was like hiccup's last lesson when it came to protecting not only the dragons but also his people. Both parents helped him come to that conclusion. Excited for the next reaction, and narnia. Not so fun fact (if nobody has said it yet): The big Bewilderbeast, the alpha, dragon that Drago had, he actually had since its hatching. He used his staff to make the dragon expect pain whenever the dragon sees him wave it around. Thats why it was so loyal, it had been manipulated and abused to believing Drago would hurt it even at its huge size, it was scared 😢.
I think the way the loss of Stoick hurts the viewer so much is actually incredible, like in the space of a movie and a half we really mourn the loss of this father figure in Hiccup's life AND are so pained by the way Toothless was tricked into doing it. Ugh, when Hiccup pushes Toothless away as he sniffs at Stoick's hand... 😭With what you're saying about wishing he could just have both parents, I totally get the heartbreak but from a story perspective I do understand why they did it (BUT IT REALLY HURTS STILL 😭😭). The moment is heartbreaking because Stoick has just made amends with his wife, and because it’s Toothless who does it. Not to mention that Stoick’s family and friends are all standing there watching him pass. If you consider that Hiccup’s story is the primary story, Stoick’s death is a rite of passage for Hiccup to become the leader he needs to become, to be able to stand on his own - and to also recognise that some enemies really can't be reasoned with. There was no talking this out with Drago, which is something Stoick and Valka both tried to explain to Hiccup and he wouldn't listen. By losing Stoick, Hiccup now steps into a larger role and fully becomes the chief. It blossoms in full affect when his father’s no longer there to be his crutch.
I love how you show emotion like this in your reactions, I've seen this movie so many times and I still sob every time LOL. It is so easy for me to get attached to characters and in the end..they're fictional...but in animated movies I swear they know how to get people to fall in love with a story and the life of something or someone fictional it is so amazing.

In the first movie, Stoick learns a hard lesson from his son. In this one, Hiccup learns a hard lesson from his dad. Stoick had to learn to listen to his son (and still struggled with it a little in this one). And in this one, realistically, Hiccup also developed the same problem, as we often inherit one or two of our parents' flaws. Both characters are amazing, but flawed and imperfect, and that makes them so much more human. And as much as I hate that Stoick was killed, I do understand why he had to. Kind of like how Mufasa had to die for Simba to become the king he was at the end of the Lion King. I'm so excited to see your reaction to Hiccup and Toothless' growth in the last movie! This is my favorite film out of the trilogy. It holds very special meaning to me because my dad actually saw it with me in the theater. When the chief was killed, I was DISTRAUGHT but so thankful my dad was sitting next to me.
Fun or sad fact: The alpha dragons was inspired by elephants. The stick Drago has is based on the ones that ppl use irl to 'train' elephants in cruel and terrible ways. You can see the scars on the alphas face and body from beatings it got as a baby💔 Just like the elephants it learnt to obey, from the consequences of not doing so
16:15 The end of the first movie when Toothless tries to catch Hiccup the scene is actually in slow mo and could have only lasted about 1 second in real time. This means that the speed of which Toothless goes to grab Hiccup's leg, he had to pull him in as quickly as possible. In that motion it could have shredded Hiccup's leg to no return causing them to amputate it. I hope this helps. 26:22 It always hurts to hear the crack of pain in Toothless' voice when Hiccup pushes him away. 27:59 Wait until you watch the third movie.

Honestly, I don't think Stoick would have had his death any other way. He would have proudly died protecting his family and village. He died protecting his son. Yes, he would have wished to spend more time with his wife but I think looking back he would have felt ncredibly grateful that he got to see his wife one last time. Hiccup talked in the series that bridges the gap between movie one and two that his dad is always so up tight and grumpy. That was probably the happiest he's ever been in years. First he finds his dead wife alive and agree to be married once again, then he gets to go head to head with someone he's probably wanted to get revenge on for a while and died saving his son. He had an honorable death and a just as honorable funeral. As sad as his death is those few facts sort of give me comfort. Knowing his personality and character he probably wouldn't have it any other way. Getting to see his wife was just the cherry on top.
Oh just wait for the third movie… went to go see it in theaters, came out with mascara running down my face😅 I feel like as far as the dad dying, it was kind of hiccups lesson that not everyone can be convinced/talked to, and this is the result.
