    Fine video, as always, Tom. Keep it going. For my personal taste, my X-E1 (black & silver) , X-E2 (black) is much enough Fujifilm for me. As long as those are working, there's really no need to upgrade. I forgot to mention also my X-M1 (black), as the smallest of them. Besides them, i have the X100 L.E., and the X-T1 (graphite). 6 Fujifilm APS-C cameras are enough for myself. :-)

      I agree, six Fuji cameras should be more than enough :) the second dial: I did think I would miss it on the X-E4. But I really don’t, and I am happy about that! When I bought the X-E4 I was even prepared that I’d maybe just sell it quickly after comparing with my X-E3. But now it is gonna be the other way around: the X-E3 will be sold. (I‘ve got 40+ analog cameras so my cabinet is full anyway!)

    Thanks for the review, Thomas! I've been looking forward to your take on the X-E4. I have both the X-E3 and X-S10. I definitely prefer the rangefinder-style esthetic of the X-E3. I also like its classic controls, which the X-S10 lacks. The only reason that I bought the X-S10 was for the IBIS. As you say, it's absurd that Fuji doesn't put it in the X-E series cameras. Many M4/3 cameras have it and they're just as small. No excuse on Fuji's part!
    Another thing I don't like about the X-S10 is the way it handles presets. It saves some things to the preset that it shouldn't, like the lens focal length. Since I use a lot of manual lenses, I want to change the focal length via the menu and then switch freely between presets (which I use for film recipes like Kodachrome and HP5+). Unfortunately, switching the preset also switches to whatever focal length is already stored in the preset. Very annoying. The X-E3 doesn't do this with its presets.
    The X-E4 is beautiful, but I wish it had the focus mode switch. I dislike touchscreen control because fingerprints and smears on the glass really annoy me. In fact, with my X-S10, I reverse the screen so it stays clean and I can pretend I'm using a film camera rather than a digital one!
    Anyway, I appreciate your high quality reviews and thoughtful commentary! Wishing you the best with the X-E4!

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  2 года назад

      Hi Donald, thanks for your detailed comment. The way how the X-S10 handles the focal length setting in the presets sounds like a programming error to me. Yes that would annoy me a lot! Especially as you really do need that setting on the X-S10 cause it's got IBIS!

    the x-e3 was near perfect. ibis, weather sealing, and an articulating screen like on the x-t3 would have been great additions, but instead they created a lesser camera for my particular needs. i'm a stills only shooter. i prefer tactile buttons over touch screens. i'm really hoping for some course correction with the release of the x-e5, but i'm not holding my breath.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  2 года назад +3

      I get your point even though I'm maybe a bit on the other side. I see that several comments support that the X-E series should have weather sealing. I personally don't care about that but maybe that's cause I always use manual focus lenses and those are basically never weather sealed. Actually, if it's just a bit of slight rain, I think the current X-E cameras can handle that very well, and if there's more rain, I as the photographer give up and run back home earlier than my camera ... 😅
      I also think that it makes sense that Fuji seperates the design of the X-E and the X-T series. So weather sealing, in my book, is something that suits the X-T series. More tactile buttons also is something that suits the X-T series. I'd by the way love a seperate ISO dial on the X-E but I get they can't do it in the "rangefinder" form factor - the space needed for that dial is already occupied by the viewfinder. And the viewfinder itself on the X-E is also way smaller than on the X-T. But that's again cause of space restrictions.
      The IBIS, I really would want it in EVERY modern camera. Even smartphones have it. IBIS does not just improve handling a bit. Instead, depending on the situation, it can make a pretty big difference in image quality.
      So, for me, the X-E4 with IBIS would be already perfect. If that means a few millimetres or grams extra, who cares. I did own the Olympus PEN-F which also incorporated IBIS and it was still a super compact body. Yes it was only Micro Four Thirds, but also it was a 2016 release and now we've got 2022. They can make IBIS fit in a small body if they want to.
      If I would long for more buttons, I'd look at the X-T series. And yes again I get your point because the X-T4 is a pretty heavy and big beast. The form factor of the X-T2 and X-T3 was nicer, in my opinion ...

      But it's good for me, so the price difference to go to the X-E4 is now much less as it was 1 1/2 years ago!

    For myself, I like nothing about the XE3 or the XE4. Neither beat the XE1, XE2 or the XE2S. I like the results the best out of my XE1, but I like my XE2S the best. I don't want touch screens and I want more function buttons. I like my flash too. It really comes in handy at times. I like my D pad as well as a joy stick put in the right place. Need my front SCM switch as well !
    I'll keep using my oldies because I love them ! I love my XT1's better than my XT-3 too, and am looking to trade it off for an
    X Pro 2 ! I think Fuji is going to shite , if they can't do better than this newer stuff I'm not going to buy any of it ! Just stick with the better older (vintage) cameras that still do what I want from them and do it well ! I like your honest videos and have spent quite a bit on those fast lenses and don't regret any of them ! LarryMac

    I was using (and still do) the X-E2s. Now I have the X-E3 BECAUSE of the X-E4. I was going to skip the 3, but when they announced the X-E4 and I read what the left off of it for minimalism sake, I bought the X-E3. I like my X-E3 a lot and feel it continues with what made me go with Fujifilm. It has exactly the same sensor and processor as my XT-2 and X-Pro2 so I have all the Q menus set identically from these three cameras and get the same predictable results from each.
    The lack of rear dial and focus mode switch turned me off from the X-E4 as did the reduced grip. They sell you a smaller, less gripable body, then offer for $150 the front grip and thumb grip to make it useable. Not for me.
    FWIW... just me but as a left eye dominant photographer, I had to disable all touch screen functions for my cameras that have them. On my X-E3, I tried using the touchscreen, but my nose kept changing focus points, or just carrying the camera thru crowds would cause settings to change simply because some stray finger swiped the screen just holding the camera. No touchscreen work around for me to compensate for buttons and switches that should just be there.
    I'm glad that I went with the X-E3. It's still available new for under $700 in the US... I might have to buy another for longevity.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for your feedback. While I do prefer the X-E4, I get all your points are valid. I like the X-E4 because it is so super reduced and, let's call, it outspoken minimalistic. What sort of camera body we prefer, is highly subjective anyway!
      I also get that all the points you mention are the reason why used X-E3 prices are still so high, or even increasing a bit. Apparently many photographers prefer the X-E3 over the X-E4. I just can hope that Fuji will continue this line with a future X-E5. I am kind of an easy person so I'm sure I'll like the X-E5 if it is as minimalistic as the X-E4, but I'd also like it if they go a bit back towards the direction of the X-E3.

    I feel the X-E3 is perfect. I hate the over use of touch screens. I have been a working photographer for fifty years so I know I'm a dinosaur but I'm a happy dinosaur. My X-E3 is always with me when I don't want to lug my Leica M-P240 around. For me it's a far more sensible choice than a Leica CL and I have a bag full of TTArtisan and 7Artisans lenses which are suburb for smart money.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  2 года назад

      Yes, if you come from more professional cameras which are all about dials and dedicated buttons, the X-E3 is already quite "reduced", but the X-E4 might then be just too much of a reduction.
      Happy dinosaur: In the last maybe 20 years, I shot several Canon EOS 1D and 5D series bodies and also the Nikon D1x and D2x (... those were the days ...) and I was absolutely used to that style of camera. For paid shootings the weight (including all the big zoom lenses) never mattered and even on holiday I'd happily take my 1Ds Mk.2 or later 5D and then basically just a 35 and a 50.
      Today my own preferences have also shifted a bit. I love the small bodies a lot and I don't mind the occasional use of a touchscreen, as long as all really vital controls are still there (aperture, exp. compensation, etc.) ... and maybe that's how I now ended up with the X-E4.
      I agree that the Leica CL appears a much less sensible option than any Fuji. Still kind of sad that they have given up on it now.

I still have both cameras and even the XE4 looks beautiful I don't like the fact it has less buttons, also, I don really see a huge improvement from the XE3... For me, the "perfect" camera would be an XE3 with WR and IBIS...
    Off topic, do you prefer the TTArtisan 35mm 1.4 over the 7Artisans 35mm 1.2???

      I never tried out the 7 Artisans 35/1.2. What I love about the TT Artisan is that it comes with click stops on the aperture and a hard stop at infinity (that is BTW super easily user adjustable in case that you get a copy that doesn't perfectly focus to infinity). The 7 Artisans 35/1.2 (also their other lenses) don't offer these super practical features.

    Fair and sincere review as always Tom!! However you look at it though, this camera is obsolete by 2021 standards and the "new" features like touch and flippy screen are in fact overdue stuff the XE3 should have had already in 2017.
    The XE line was already at risk because of the shrinking prosumer market and IBIS was THE thing that could give it a boost making for a great family/compact camera to shoot great videos even with cheap primes. Before the launch I was hoping at least for some software stabilization, things 150 euro phones can do. Instead, they think people are stupid and market this camera with 2015 features as some cheap Leica.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  2 года назад +1

      I agree, especially when looking at how easy a current iPhone (or other smartphones) can handle even long-term exposures handheld ...
      On the other hand, I love my X-E4 cheap Leica knockoff. If they abandon this line, I might be abandoning Fuji altogether, because the old-fashioned user concept is just what I enjoy the most!
      So I can't agree that this camera is obsolete, because there's no alternative on the market anymore. (Save the more expensive and heavier X-T4 and X-Pro3, but especially the X-Pro3 is also pretty quirky overall.)

    • @25myma
      @25myma 2 года назад +1

      @@tomscameras yeah, it is a beautiful camera but no IS at all means it's useless as a family/casual camera, which is its main market in 2022. And it's not like the feature would have harmed XS10 or XT4 sales, the body style and lack of more buttons already isolates the XE from professionals; the lack of any IS just makes it useless for handheld family/travel videos, which is 1 of the 2 things you're supposed to do with it. Fuji's holding back of features is not a new thing; it didnt give the XE3 a flippy screen in 2017, when the $300 sony a5000 had it in 2014; when something is essential and everyone is offering it at any pricepoint, holding it back is suicidal. Fuji keeps doing this again and again and then they wonder why their market share is shrinking..is the competition so far ahead; no, they just play all their cards and dont hide today's features to sell them 5 years later.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  2 года назад +1

      @@25myma I agree that basically every digital system camera should have IBIS today. But then, especially APS-C models almost never get it. Even Sony sells some models without IBIS and ppl seem to love them. Or also Nikon with the Z50 and the Zfc, wannabe-rival of the Fuji. Maybe most casual shooters just get a kit zoom lens which always will offer stabilization and then they are happy. And the more critical customers normally switch to full frame? I really have no idea what the thinking is behind today‘s non-IBIS offerings …

    • @25myma
      @25myma 2 года назад

      @@tomscameras Sure, but both the Zfc and the Z50 are fuji XT4/S10 competitors, more professional and likely to be mointed on gimbals. The XE4 on the other hand is prosumer/phone owner oriented, it's compact and lacks buttons and most of its market is casual/family users like me...
      My usual routine is; I'm taking pictures with my favorite primes and some scene with the kids deserves a video,..I put down the camera and take out the phone , unless I'm sitting stable and kids don't run...this happens with my XE1 from ~10 years ago and will happen with the XE4. For the same reason I'm not buying an X100 series camera; I love them as cameras, but as soon as I have to shoot some video they're useless, you have to sit and edit the videos in DaVinci or something similar.

I'd love to see, if Fujifilm would bringt the D-Pad back on a possible X-E5 someday...and it does really need WR, means weather resistance....perhaps into 2023....or even 2024....

    • @tomscameras

      There's always room for improvement, yes. Maybe D-Pad and WR are more features in line with the X-T series, though. For me, replacing the D-Pad with the joystick is perfect, but as with the small buttons ... the joystick in itself could be improved a bit.
      I really fear that Fuji might abandon the whole X-E line ... who knows if they're doing another upgrade to the X-Pro line even? I'm totally NOT an X-Pro guy but that one's also something totally unique on the market ...

      The X-S10 or X-H2 are great cameras, but totally not my style, if I wanted a camera like that, frankly I'd just go Sony, Canon or Nikon full frame. But the new X-T5 is just around the corner apparently, so that is good news for the Fuji user interface. Full control or boutique-style is then maybe just a secondary question.

      @@tomscameras yeah I didn't mean to trash your choice, I just which a more practical model is coming out. Ergonomic and usable and at the same time nice looking like a rangefinder style.

      I get what you mean! Regarding ergonomics, usability and "ultimate control", I wasn't too happy with the X-Pro 3, for example. I understand and appreciate that Fuji likes to try out "unique" solutions - but the X-Pro 3 rear screen concept just didn't work for me.
      Overall, I fear that the market is shrinking too much, and experiments like the X-Pro 3 and maybe also the X-E3 and X-E4 don't attract enough buyers, so in the end Fuji might decide to boil down their whole program to just one, maximum two different body styles with the unique and important Fuji user interface in the future ...
