Am from West Africa, From Kogi State Nigeria. I’m Igala by tribe, was just reading about my tribe and I came across the Gullah Tribe. I can feel the connection. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
My family in Savannah Georgia lived near the swampy area..We use to go back each summer.. My great great great grandmother was a rice farmer. We were raised in NYC people thought my mom was from the islands.. My fathers sister was hard to understand with her acce t and her words. When she would get angry, surprised, she would say coun fon di luck..Never asked aunt Shig the meaning..as a kid we knew the tone wasn't good. I'm 62..She passed when I was 10..my mom still spoke with an accent till she passed away although she lived in NYC..I'm left with a few words...and the story of how my ancestors were rice farmers..the women anyway.
My grandmother is from Sierra Leon I was just informed. I’m definitely going to visit and try to track my family history, it’s so unfortunate they most black people can’t track our family trees. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ this video.
Thanks for the ancestral history, my father told me, before he died respect my Gray family history "Geechee" but I didn't know how to connect with other tribal members
The land and houses need to be preserved and protected as historical sites and sacred territory. Development should not be allowed in low country. It should be sacred and untouched, because of the unique ability to exist in the same region for 400 years.
Prior to the pandemic, I visited the Bahamas..and watched local tv..the words and accents were so familiar almost identical to geechee. The local people not the one in the tourist area.
The original imported Africans were Angolan, but later imported Africans were from the rice-growing regions of West Africa, like present day Liberia and Sierra Leone.
No one can join to become a Gullah Geechie person ... Anyone who is promoting that will regret that disrespect of the ancestors ... Keep the basket making as a family tradition not something to be sold as lessons and then become a devalued tradition 🪘 🧺
