It wasn't shot at their planet, it was test fired from their planet and misfired. It exceeded expectations of the designers. Much like the people that worried that the first test detonation of the atomic bomb could cause the earth's atmosphere, to have carried on the fusion/fission process once started by the test. Perhaps it was fired against a Vandual fleet, destroying most of it as well, but they were able to recover parts of the weapon in the aftermath which accounts for the king ships and their weapons.
Guess that doesn’t bode well for the retribution
@@jugganaut33 except if Paul is correct the Vanduul already use it so the Retribution should be safe not to mention the UEE has already tested it on Odin
@@jugganaut33 I haven't seen a CR game yet where a superweapon survives more than a few missions. :D
11:30 or thereabouts raises an interesting question of whether it was a test-firing of such a weapon, by the Hadesians, which originally destroyed the planet in their own system. It's not my favourite theory, though.
@@Casey093 But there is almost always a superweapon...
I personally always thought that the big gap in the retribution is a BFR (Big Fun Railgun)
I can definitely see a shot from a planet killer to be the dramatic finale to sq42. Then we can explore the aftermath in the PU. Sounds sick af
The only thing Elite Dangerous ever really has, that nothing else has, is massive mystery. Raxxla... the dark wheel... guardian AI... Gan Romero... all these things inspire people to explore and research. I can't wait to see SC with enough space to have such mysteries to inspire.
Somehow I played ED for a year and never realized there was a plot or storyline.
As long as we're theorycrafting and engaging in wild speculation ...
If this is true, my guess is that the weapon will be used to break the Vanduul in episode two of S42 ... then turned on the independent worlds years later in episode three to quell the "pirate" threat causing Terra and other worlds to break from the UEE along with other planets, at which point we as the player have to destroy the Retribution. Also, someone from the Earth side of the conflict will use the phrase "Peace in our time" during Ep 3.
how you know all of this?
@@seveneternal7988 "As long as we're theorycrafting and engaging in wild speculation ..."
I love this kind of stuff in the lore. It offers so much in terms of potential ingame storytelling.
I've always felt like I was one of the few people who noted that scaffold system in the middle of the Retribution. Looked like some kind of axial railgun, far larger than the 6 shipbuster turrets dotted around the dreadnought.
If that scaffold rig is the planet killer, then I just got more excited
Nice work Paul, detailed as always. Your ability to weave many pieces of lore into a single story is second to none.
What we know for sure from CIG is that the UEES Retribution is under construction during the beginning of Episode 1. You apparently see it from afar near the beginning of the game.
The full outside of the model has to be finished for the end of Episode 1, and it will appear near the end, exterior only.
It will be featured quite extensively for Episode 2: Behind Enemy Lines.
They will have to finish key portions of the interior needed for scenes that take place inside of it. It was said they were unsure if the full interior would be finished, or not. They were also not sure if the full interior would ever be finished, which has lead to a lot of people speculating that it probably gets destroyed.
Lol where do u get this info from... thy can finish this ship in 6 months with a team of 24
@@Astralox Do you know how big the Retribution is?
The Polaris is supposed to be done in about 12 months.
It is 155m long.
The Retribution is 2700m long.
For comparisson, the biggest ship we've seen in game is the Javelin at 470m.
The Retribution is slightly less than 6 times the size of the Javelin.

As for all the information, I've watched every Wingman's Hanger, Around the Verse, Reverse the Verse, Inside Star Citizen, Inside Star Citizen Live, Pillar Report, Subscriber Q&A and 10 For The Chairman. Where each of these piece of information was given I don't recall.
I think when they released the first concept image of the Retribution they said how you would see it under construction near the beginning of Episode 1. There was a question about the Retribution from the community on one of the shows and one of team said that they had to have the outside done for Episode 1 as it appears completed in all its glory, but they woulnd't need to have any interior done and propbably wouldn't have any done at that point. The same person said that key areas of the ship would have to be done for Episode 2 as it is heavily featured.
They were asked if it will appear in the PU, I think it was to Erin Roberts and his answer was something along the lines of, are you sure it survives the campaine.
My guess is these were in the Around the Verses on Squadron 42, or one of the interviews with Erin Roberts.
I haven't been able to find it yet, but my favorite answer from Erin was where he was asked about if it has taken so long to create 2 star systems, Stanton and Odin, what makes them think they will be able to get a lot more systems done before Star Citizen's launch. Eric got a little flustered and responded, what makes you think we only have 2 star systems done. We already have I think 4 other systems done other than Odin for Squadron 42.
I know the wiki has a number of the references, not sure if they include the information I had said.

Solid reporting and a very interesting theory, I love some good speculation.
Ive always liked giant seemingly invincible capital ships with insane unfathomably powerful weaponry and shields. It would be so bad ass to see this thing effortlessly shred a kingship like its swatting a fly.
Hmmm....Also, the 'Duul homeworld having been destroyed by the Hadesians might explain why they're now both nomadic and so bent on harvesting other systems for resources. Your homeworld gets blow'd up, you might not want to ever settle down on a planet again
Maybe, there's no evidence that the Hadesians ever left their system, though. If they had FTL, evidence of their ships and ruins would likely exist.
@@godlygumbo Unless they didn't have spaceships and just teleported everywhere *gesticulates wildly, pulls out map with threads everywhere*
Yeah - got one of a kind Scythe from that captured vanduul cruiser. You dig really deep - it's cool to see someone taking their lore breadcrumbs makes an expanding story out of the whole thing 👍
I'm really curious where they go with the Retribution as a plot device. My guess is Bishop's using it for his own selfish reasons because he's a warmonger par excellence, wreaking havoc in Vanduul space with it and unifiying all Vanduul clans against humanity.
Bishop is Ceasar and the Vanduuls (barbarians) are going to need their Boudica
i think it was the vanduul that wrecked the hadesians while trying to weaponize another (not the uee) races terraforming or mining tech. and now they don't use it because their goal is to strip mine planets.
I love how the answer to SC's seeming lack of tech is usually cover ups and bans. RKKVs would be a nightmare for any lore
"That's no small moon..." - Said no citizen ever ^^
This ship is a lot of why i am so hype for Squadron 42. We will def have a mission where this beast is fighting like 2-4 Vanduul Kingships, and we will be in the fray in some way, and i am gonna just cry.
In Episode 2 though, not the first one they're working on right now
@@gian.4388 How you know that?
@@seveneternal7988 makes sense to me. You don't go that big in the first instalment of an episodic anything. If you do, what could possibly come next that could top it?
@@joshadams5602 I mean I dont think he is speculating, I think he just read the leaked plot and wanted a confirmation, because he should not spread the plot as he is spoiling others.
@@seveneternal7988 I don't know almost anything about the leaked plot, I just heard people who know it say that it's supposed to show up in Ep.2
Not much of a spoiler really, just setting the expectations for when to expect that ship
Fun, thanks for putting this together. I'm onboard with the speculation
Thank you Paul for a very enjoyable romp through SC Lore. You certainly have a very engaging way of getting and holding peeps attention!! And long may you continue to do so!!
So, it appears to be Star Citizen's version of the Wing Commander 3's Behemoth planet killer, and I'd not be surprised to see it meet a very similar fate.
Good stuff Paul, I adore these and very interesting!!
The UEES Retribution: the Empire goes Beast Mode.
All it takes is for the Vanduul to create a trap for the Retribution, destroy it, and then start a massive offensive
by uniting all the vanduul-clans against the humanity , then it's game over.
Well put together!
I wonder how fast one of these travels and what the range is. Gameplay wise it would be interesting to see a future PU-wide event where one side escorts one of these heading towards a planet. And if the planetary defence fails then the once lush green planet turns into a mostly charred desert world.
I have a feeling the Retribution isn't going to last very long, it'll likely help the UEE win the Vanduul war but will probably have to sacrifice the ship in order to win, as something with that much power in my opinion has no place in a post-Messer UEE and if lasts longer than the Vanduul war many will wonder why the UEE is toting around a literal planet killer ship.
It's human nature to seek power for power's sake there is no way the Retribution will be decommissioned it is THE flagship of the UEE navy there is no way the brass is going to let go of it plus having weapon capable of destroying planets is a good deterrent against foreign threats it's up to use to make sure it never gets used unjustly.
Pretty sure it was elevator issues broke that planet in two.
That was fantastic, well made
I really like this kind of content. thank you
This is awful food for thought! ☺️
Excellent thinking and video!
Great video yet again man
Good stuff keep em coming...
Very interesting - lots to contemplate here
you should team up with CIG and make the audio books for the history for this game as always good job.
absolutely great Videos
Reminds me of infinite warfare ships that game was so good ( the campain)
i think your on to something any military would go into R&D for superiority weapons and then remove all leaks of the building of something of this size.
just as i got interested in the hadesian superweapon... what coincidence!
well I enjoyed this a lot
hopefully they make it flyable in game
Zero chance the Bengal isn't going to be usable let alone this which sucks
I wonder if we get to be a crew member on the Retribution? Maybe it’s commander like COD Infinite?
I wonder if deeper excavation will find the odd Vanduul remains and artefacts when investigating Hadesian archaeology? I think a Vanduul super fleet hit Hades, the Vanduul got hit by a bug for which they had impaired immunity, deployed weaponised invasive species as remote cleanup but not before someone would have broken quarantine and devastated a more unified version of Vanduul civilisation than we see in the 30th century. This would explain why the surviving Vanduul operate as independent operations groups. Notice how nothing goes home straight away and there is great mystery about non-martial Vanduul culture because they keep their core culture isolated?
"leave it to humans to search for power regardless of the consequences" Nah, that's the hadesians. We'll obviously test fire it well away from our worlds
Or on Hurston.
Good video.
The U.E.E.S Retribution is the only known Super Dreadnought in the U.E.E Navy, and the largest capital ship in the galaxy, it does have the capability to destroy a 'Duul Kingship, i think the Retribution's main weapons might be a Hadesian superlaser
Yes...that is the video...
@@TheAstroHistorian so it is a Hadesian super laser?
Accelerate a fence post to a significant portion of the speed of light and it can shatter worlds
Damn builders.... always creating catastrophic weapons...
lore for Sq42 very hyped
I wonder if the narrative team sees content like and thinks, "ohh, that's good! We should write that in!"
Yeah, dig up that planet killer, that destroyed an entire species, good idea… :D
YO i love a good conspiracy.
They should have put an E-SPAR from the Olympus Mons from Infinity warfare on top of this thing. What a beast weapon system that was.
No need. It's got 6 quad barrel 130mm ship buster railguns dotted around its hull in addition to the axial mounted planet killer
@@phantomwraith1984 130mm is actually tiny though, we’ve got that sized gun on on some next gen main battle tanks irl, it’s a little bit bigger than the gun used on the M1A1 Abram’s and German leopard 2s.
Or Tolwyn finally successfully test fired the Behemoth.
Interesting
I swear Star Citizen is slowly becoming star wars lol
Leave it to humanity to decide that damaging a planet's atmosphere or crust beyond repair isnt enough, but that we have to try to destroy the ENTIRE THING😂.
crazy, but it tracks !
Wavemotion Cannon!
So. When do we hijack the Retribution?
They're coming for you now..
Big Boy 😱
Okay, so.... the probability that AstroPub just spoiled SQ42's main story arc is?
I would never willingly spoil a plot point that I knew for sure was in the game.
@@TheAstroHistorian haha, I know you wouldn't... but inadvertently... because this does sound like a Chris Robert's plot.
In a time when many conspiracy theories in real life are coming true this video fits our real world time in history.
It's gunna be the Behemoth all over again. Big build up, gets death star'd before it can do anything useful. Tiny fighter goes in and somehow does its job instead.
Do you still plan to cover the first battle of the retribution?
At some point yes.
makes sense
That's my daily driver o7
neato
Imma own one of these monster ships
So Parker is a more often correct Alex Jones?
Yep
Im for it
Seems legit.
I discount the idea that the UEE has found and reverse-engineered the Hadesian planet breaker. Not saying it's not possible, just not likely. However, the rest of your theory hangs together very well. That looks to me like it's a giant, spinal-mount railgun, however, for all we know, that's what split Hades IV.
Mf you're talking like you're judging real life probabilities. It's a game they can write the story however they want to. "Not very likely" based on what exactly? 🤣
o7 😎👍
The Hadesian artifacts just look like a fancy toilet seat. For all we know, some super constipated alien probably dropped such a massive turd it blew away half of their planet.
Moral of the story kids, eat your fiber & lay off the cheese.
TBH they probably are just toilet seats because there are so damn many of them out there. The irony of people bringing toilets out of rubble thinking their super weapons when the UEE already has the thing and tells no one.
Nice video. too bad we'll not know the answer until 2030 if at that.
