    I love the subtle parts of this movie so much: Hitler was a vegetarian and famously hated smoking. But to Jojo, smoking and meat eating is what adults do, so he assumes his hero Hitler must do both. It makes it clear the Jojo is not a true believer at all, just a shy sad kid desperately looking for a father/role model but oblivious to what’s actually going on. It’s a brilliant choice to convey that inherent need to belong can blind anyone to reality

      @@NiaMakiReacts Late to the party but also;
      1. Hitler eating a (In Jojos mind) super expensive unicorn while he is scavenging for food in dumpsters is also a way to show JoJos growing dislike for Hitler and the Nazi party.
      2. Captain Klenzendorf saying "Correct" to Elsa when she's citing her birth date even though it's wrong to protect her, and later on saying "Rose was a good person. An actual good person".
      This movie is one of my few 10/10 movies.

      Although the rumor still goes around that hitler was a vegetarian it is not really true. He would still eat chicken and especially fish. But he would think highly of other animals and use them as an example as to support his idea that jews are not humans and not even animals, that they are something else, something lesser. I read a thick book about hitler and his animal views in swedish but do not know if it is translated.

    • @rollfizzlebeef6619
      @rollfizzlebeef6619 8 месяцев назад

      @@koppsal Vegetarians do not strictly eat plant-based foods like vegans. Vegetarians usually just eat very little meat and/or stay away from certain types of meat like red meat or pork. So, it is still possible for someone to occasionally eat chicken and fish, and still be considered a vegetarian.

      Yesssssss that part was also devastating 😭 😭

    • @Justin_Leone
      @Justin_Leone 10 месяцев назад +11

      Yeah, same. Captain K is such a surprisingly complex character. Not all of the subtext behind his motivations are subtle, but it's all subtext. The resigned but satisfied smile he gives JoJo as he's being dragged off to his execution, knowing that JoJo and Elsa are safe, and that he'll be joining his beloved Freddy (who's cape he is clutching in this scene) is a perfect confirmation of everything we've learned about him throughout the movie, and it brings me to tears every time I've seen it.
      And then 30 seconds later I'm laughing at Yorki again.

    • @itsgonnabeanaurfromme

      That look in Sam Rockwells face as he's being dragged away absolutely broke my heart the first time I saw it.
      Rockwell is a MAGNIFICENT actor, because how do you get 'understands death is seconds away and is scared, also heartbroken over losing his lover, but is proud of saving Jojo in his last moments' across with just a facial expression in a 2 second scene.

You know that overly dramatic and stereotypical thing you see in movies where someone gasps loudly before putting his hand over their mouth in shock with their eyes wide open? So many people who see this film seem to completely miss the fact that Captain K helps them out because he, too, has a secret that would get him sent to a camp if he were found out.

    What I think is amazing about this film is how it explores the dogmatism of the Germans that chose become nazis out of blind loyalty. And JoJo, being a young kid was easily influenced, goes through the journey of realizing the flaw in that dogmatism and how his mother was raising him not only to do what was right, but to learn to do it for when she’s no longer with him. I also love how you watch the connection between him and Elsa and how they grow from being two estranged children with different cultural backgrounds to not only friends but to a brother-sister relationship. 🐇

    I loved your reaction to this. I've actually watched others reactions and I appreciated how genuinely moved you were at the appropriate points. Every other reactor I've seen doesn't show the empathy that you do. I felt the exact same the first time I saw it. Don't feel ashamed. It was meant to make us feel the real horror that is exacted from a fascist regime. Also did a brilliant job of showing how truly absurd this kind of hate is.
    It also speaks to the rise of fascism here in American and around the world. If only people in America could understand that they are on the verge of bringing this kind of blind fanaticism to power right now. It also tells us what we should do about it. Make the choice "to do what you can".
    Every time I watch it I see more in it. There are so few perfect movies. This is undeniably one of them.

    People complained that these were topics that should not be given the comedy-treatment, but there is a certain four-part rhythm to this movie that makes it brilliant.
    “Nazis are funny, ja?”
    “Nazis are funny, ja?”
    “Nazis are funny, ja?”
    “…NO!!!!”
    It occurs over and over in the movie, but never more powerfully than in the “Heil Hitler!” scene with the gestapo near the end.

    A couple little bits and pieces that I haven’t seen any/too many comments on. Inge likely died of tuberculosis based on the time period, captain K was gay and likely sabotaged German military efforts from within (operation screw up). He spends most of the film using language that makes it clear he knows what’s up “are you still going on about those *people* (Jews)”. Also his outfit is deliberately eye catching and noisy, it gives away the location of German troops when they would’ve had the home court advantage (the music, the bright red, his partner firing off shots in the air). Also the scene near the beginning where you see the hangings and jojo’s mom says “they did what they could” she repeats again when pretending to be her husband “she’s doing what she can”. Also just as a bit of extra fun; the director, Taika Waititi, plays imaginary Hitler. He essentially said if anyone was going to play Hitler in his film it may as well be a Māori Jew. He also said he did no research into hitler’s behavior beyond what’s absolutely necessary because essentially ‘he was a dick and doesn’t deserve the respect’

    Film gets a number of things wrong for 'comedy' sake more than anything but one thing they got right is how Jojo's mother never reported his sister's death. It was common for families during the war not to report the death of family members because of rationing. Basically people were issued ration cards/quotas and they were not allowed to buy or purchase more than a set amount allocated by the State. If they never reported her death Jojo's mother could bring home more food, being she had a hidden mouth to feed and a growing boy. In spite of that people were still tightening belts during the war definitely in the later years when Germany became more isolated and lost occupied territories, the Reich couldn't trade for food because of embargos nor could she steal food from occupied countries as she did during the early years which often devastated regions like Poland. So by the time of this film, Germany was starving.
