Captain K rushed to JoJo’s house because he knew his mother had already been killed, and the Gestapo were coming to search. He covered for Elsa, (get a new photo, you look like a ghost in this one), and saved JoJo again at the end by disavowing him. He and Freddie Finkle were gay lovers, so the Nazis would have killed them too if they knew.

My Oma’s house in Germany had two fake walls. Behind them were bookshelves. We used to keep our Barbies in them. My opa built them to hide all their books and art from the German government during WWII Even though my opa was in the Nazi army, he still hid things.

Geez that's crazy, seems like nobody in Germany had a choice

Waititi's strength as a filmmaker is balancing comedy and tragedy. It doesn't always work (see the last Thor film, for example), but when it does you wind up with something like this masterpiece. It's really hard to believe that this is a movie that got made. It couldn't have been easy to talk a studio into handing over millions of dollars to make a movie about a kid with Hitler as an imaginary friend.
My favorite character is definitely Captain K. I don't know if you picked up on it because you didn't mention it, but the movie rather strongly implies that he's gay and in a relationship with Finkel (his assistant.) At the end, when they show up to the battle with their special uniforms, they both have pink triangles on them, the symbol that gays who the Nazis sent to concentration camps were made to wear. Most likely Captain K was in the German military prior to the Nazi takeover and was only able to keep his position by hiding who he was (prior to Nazis taking power, the LGBTQ community in Germany had made great advances in being accepted. The fascist takeover was partially a response to that. It's always worth remembering that the first major book burning in Germany was at the institute of Sexology, a group that studied and fought for gay and transgender rights.) Captain K was someone who was loyal to Germany, but not the Nazi movement.

I couldn't imagine how what it was like trying to get this movie made but glad they made it! I totally didn't pick up on Captain K and Finkel until I was editing it. It's crazy to think how Germany went so far in the other direction after making progress

JoJo Rabbit instantly became one of my favorite movies of all time, if not my favorite. I have an addiction to watching reaction videos and having my own analysis on the deeper meanings and symbolisms in it. One thing I keep coming across is people asking the same question. "Who called them in.". People blaming yorkie or captain K.
But if you pay attention there are little hints. Well, that's how I took them. I found a lot of shots and dialogue has meaning in this movie. And it explains or foreshadows other scenes and dialogue.
And believe it or not it is far more grim than even Yorkie calling.
Nobody called. Well, at least none of the characters we meet.
Steven Merchant's character and that visit had a lot more details in it than people are paying attention to. "She's very busy." "Is she?" creepy smile with thinly veiled secret knowledge (most unnerving smile and eyes I've ever seen)... She's either already hung or is about to be.
Then at the end "That reminds me. We have to go. We left that guy hanging.".
I think this is a clue that his father has been caught and they learned he and Rosie were in the resistance.
Jojo and 'inga' would have probably been facing the same fate if witnesses (Captain K and Freddy) had not shown up and protected them. Also if they had not stroked their htlerloving egos. Notice how Merchant's character leans over Captain K? People think that is because he is suspicious, but why would he be? K is like their troupe leader and gave a perfectly valid excuse to be there. He's trying to intimidate him and get him to leave.
I'm very convinced that Jojo's father got caught, leading to Rosie getting caught, and they were there to find evidence and 'dispatch' Jojo too.
    Jojo is an orphan.
This also explains how they can just leave jojo on his own. They weren't planning to. They weren't planning for there to even be a jojo after their visit.

Oh wow I didn't even think about his father being caught or that they were there to get rid of Jojo. When I was editing I just figured that she got caught out in public leaving those resistance messages.

I originally only happened to watch this film by chance as the thrme of it didn't appeal much. However, after I did watch it, I'm so pleased that I did. It's an incredibly well written and acted film which is also thought provoking.
At the beginning you said that you wanted a comedy, at least you got that to start with! You asked if they had a choice if they joined the Hitler Youth or not. Simply put the answer is no, they didn't have a choice. It was made it a legal requirement to join.
Anyway, thank you for an enjoyable reaction and I'm pleased that you liked the film.

One thing that no one seems to notice is that Captain K is using his bad eye to aim and shoot at the camp introductions.

It amazes me how many reactors are shocked that "it got pretty dark at the end" it's about nazi's, it supposed to be dark! I think that's the point Taiki was making. Is that it starts with jokes about 'the other' and about the silly little man who no-one takes seriously and it ends really badly. Sound familiar? 😮

I think the cigarette references are meant to further mock Hitler. He actually despised cigarettes so this is kind of poking fun at him

i think it’s moreso to show that a lot of people that so devoutly followed him knew nothing about him. Jojo was obsessed with the guy, but he knew so little about him that in his imagination, he smoked and promoted cigarettes and ate meat.

Captain K and Freddie Finkle were gay lovers. Unfortunately, all physically capable men were required to join the German army or face death. If you look carefully at their uniforms in the final battle, that’s why they were wearing pink triangles on their uniforms…that’s how homosexuals were distinguished during the holocaust. It’s also why Captain K was firing into the air instead of firing towards the enemy.
Also, young boys were enlisted by the German army to fight towards the end…as young as 10, if I’m not mistaken. Because the Germans were running out of resources (including recruits). Also, it was strategic, because they knew the allies were less likely to fire upon children.
I love that Captain K calls Rosie “…a good person…an ACTUAL good person.” He and Freddie Finkle were actually part of the resistance too.
I personally believe that Elsa and Jojo will continue life together as siblings. They both have nothing but each other.

I totally didn't put that together about those two until I was editing. I can't believe that they were sending 10 year olds to fight! thats nuts!! I really hope Elsa and JoJo stayed together

My paternal grandfather fought in WWII & towards the end of the war he was in guard duty for his platoon when he saw a German soldier crawling towards their position. He shot the soldier & when he & his buddy went to retrieve the soldier they found a mortally wounded boy around 14 years old. They took him back to camp & my grandfather & the platoon medic sat with him until he passed. The boy cried for his mother & kept saying he was sorry & begging them not to let him die.
Though my grandfather knew he had done what was necessary to protect his platoon that boy haunted him for the rest of his life.
