    I believe Taika watched 0 speeches. He said himself “That vision of Hitler that I wrote shares nothing with the real guy other than that mustache, really. He is conjured from the mind of a 10-year-old, so he can only know what a 10-year-old knows. I had no real interest in writing an authentic portrayal, or even when I played him, I had no interest in actually putting in the effort or putting in the research, because I just didn’t think he deserved it.”

'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' is great too, although a little more like his more recent stuff... although most of those films might not fit their channels typical genre of film given what they tend to watch.

    The Toothbrush mustache Born by Hitler and many others of his generation was a holdover of World War I. A few years earlier, the safety razor had been invented, but facial hair was still quite popular. The introduction of gas and gas masks changed to this as most facial hair would interfere with the seal between the mask and the face leading to people breathing in toxic chemicals. If a man wanted to keep his mustache, it had to be restricted. Hitler had a full mustache before World War I. There's actually a very famous picture of him in the crowd cheering when Germany's declaration of war on France was announced.
    Charlie Chaplin also have the same mustache and infuriated the Nazis with a movie parodying them. I think this movie in many ways is an homage to that.
    Taika Waititi's real name is Taika David Cohen. He's half Jewish and half Maori. I'm not sure anyone else could have made this movie.

    Great reaction to one of my favorite recent movies. One thing that another commenter mentioned, it's hinted at by the looks between them in the German Shepherd scene that Captain K and Finkel are together - which would definitely be a no-no in Nazi Germany, Reinforced by the pink triangles on their costumes at the end. Would have a lot to do with Captain K's disillusionment and sympathy to Jojo's mother's and then saving JoJo.

    Waititi's depth of planning in this movie shows in how he frames many of the shots. The way Jojo's mother's shoes repeatedly appeared throughout the movie at Jojo's eye level prepared the audience for that moment when he finds her hanging in the square. The first time one reactor saw this movie they thought Taika Waititi had a shoe fetish until that moment, then everything became clear. That also highlights the way Waititi navegated the emotional journey, and how everything could turn on a dime at any minute reflecting the unpredictable nature of life-especially in wartime.

    This is such a beautiful film. The entire cast is fantastic, amazing cinematography, and it really works so much better than it has any right to. Feel like a lot of people swore it off before giving it a chance based on the premise. It's hilarious but also not afraid to delve into some serious concepts and heartfelt moments. To wrap a coming of age story around a young idealistic kid who is indoctrinated with propaganda and doesn't know any better, and begins to question whether what he's being taught is right or wrong is surprisingly profound for a satire with an imaginary Hitler. The color choices alone are enough to gush about but add in a Michael Giacchino score on top of Taika’s direction and it all comes together to create something extremely special. Hope you folks enjoy it, Cheers!

    • @Bunny_Aoife
      @Bunny_Aoife 2 года назад +1

      this is a very persistent rumour but a wrong one, which you can easily verify by googling pictures of the two scenes... Rosie's bike is a woman's bike, with a low frame, and captain K's bike is a man's bike with a high frame... there are other differences as well, but the difference in frames is very obvious and the frame can't be altered, like the basket and such stuff... but they are clearly different bicycles...
      I do not wanna speculate if he knew or didn't know at that point, but the bike was not Rosie's and assumedly just his bike, no hidden meaning behind it. I'd provide links to pictures, but comments with links tend to get removed... just google them you'll see, it is obviously a different bike

    • @andrewcharles459
      @andrewcharles459 2 года назад

      I double checked and you are correct. Rosie's bike had a rainbow banner on the rear wheel, missing on Captain K's.

    6:04 There is a difference between depiction and endorsement. In this case, it's lampooning. When Ace Ventura depicts a trans woman as a deceptive villain and has a scene where the entire room realizes she is trans and everyone starts gagging and vomiting, the movie is making *her* the joke rather than the transphobia. And no, that wouldn't fly today, and for good reason. When Jojo Rabbit shows Na*is acting like bumbling idiots and saying clearly absurd things about Jewish people, it's the fascism and antisemitism that is the joke. That's not going to get anyone other than other Na*is in an uproar.
    I guess some could make the argument that this movie shouldn't even be making light of this time period at all lest it hit as poor taste, but anyone saying that is clearly not understanding the movie anyway.

    • @emilianosintarias7337
      @emilianosintarias7337 2 года назад +2

      I don't think Ace Ventura's gag was transphobic, partly for the reasons you state, nobody in that scene was not a bumbling idiot or an egotistical blowhard (ventura). But partly because there was no concept that the villain was a transwoman. There was no dysphoria story, he was a football player who went crazy, not someone who felt like a woman since birth. If anything, the villain was doing the blackface version of transwoman, impersonating one. There was also no demonization of transpeople as a group or a kind of person, which is easy to note by the complete lack of both explicit and implicit reference to anything that could pass for stereotypes of trans communities, occupations, motifs, culture, taste, style etc.

    • @Progger11
      @Progger11 2 года назад

      @@emilianosintarias7337 But blackface was literally a racist misrepresentation of actual Black people back in the day, my friend. So, making that comparison here only proves my point.

    • @emilianosintarias7337
      @emilianosintarias7337 2 года назад

      @@Progger11No, I don't mean the movie is doing blackface but for trans people through her character. I mean the character, the villain, is portrayed by the movie as doing something like blackface, as guilty of misrepresenting a woman. But not in reference to transwomen, she never seemed to think that she was expressing her femininity.

    • @Progger11
      @Progger11 2 года назад

      @@emilianosintarias7337 Eh. I think that's hair splitting, but it is what it is. Nobody in real life gets approved for hormone treatments and transitions because they want to go into hiding and literally "become" a different gender. Whether you want to say the film depicted this in order to depict something absurd, the fact remains that it still depicted it. Which helped perpetuate the broader narrative in the zeitgeist at the time that trans people are just deceptive cis people or transvestites.

    • @emilianosintarias7337
      @emilianosintarias7337 2 года назад

      @@Progger11 I don''t get it. you really think people at the time were aware of trans people? They weren't. They were aware of drag queens, and that character did not match anything festive or flamboyant, it was literally a disguise. They were not giving an opinion on something nobody had any frame of reference for. It isn't hair splitting. I can understand thinking it was homophobic or misandrist, though i would disagree with that. I just can't see how this man disguised as a woman is supposed to be a jab at a community nobody had ever heard of
