This dude is inspiring. Mixed medium has always been a favourite. I love how gritty his work comes out!

Very unique style. I collected every issue of The Maxx, only to lose the whole thing along with most of my library to the New Orleans Flood of 2005. I was really into Sam Kieth. I've got a Batman two-issue story of his somewhere, still packed away in boxes, which is the only sampling of his work I've got now.

Sorry to hear you lost that collection. I’ve regrettably gotten rid of lots of books at different times in life. Luckily most of my Sam Kieth stuff is intact. Fortunately if you do ever build your collection up most of his stuff can be found pretty cheap.

ive read Sandman #1 so many times , the first time i read it i was like yea this is what comix could be! his style gets a bit sharper after that , kinda more modern but i still love the Will Eisner look to comix . i hope in retrospect he is proud of that opening scene it opened the way for more story telling

Love Sam Keith! And you are right, getting better at comic drawing means you have to go outside the comics sphere of illustration. Learning the principles of design, composition, technique, storytelling and everything else existed long before comics. Or perhaps you could say comics have been around forever in different forms. And if you want to have an original style you can't copy everyone else. If you learn the academic principles you will end up with your own style.

Makes a lot of sense. I don’t hear that approach often. 😎👍

@ Right on. And to be specific, one of the things Keith draws really well is plants and foliage. The figure can only look as good as its surroundings. Just getting good at plants and urban environments can massively improve the quality of anyone’s work.
