Cowboys supporter here &I'm pushing back on this idea/belief that the roster is terrible or subpar cuz it's the same roster that won the division last year &12 or 13 games. Going into this season everyone agreed the Cowboys need a RB but even with that hole they still had a top-10 roster &some still had it top-5. Terrible coaching &poor QB-play have the Cowboys at 3-5 not the roster. The Mingo trade isn't great but it's not an F or lower cuz I'm not grading Mingo based upon his time with Carolina. He's still young with real upside &Dallas only has one quality WR &with two years left on his deal if Mingo has real talent he should hit the ground running next season.
I think the idea is that the roster needs to be constructed with as many rookie scale contracts as possible. Mingo is under a rookie contact for another two seasons. The plan was clearly that they draft positions of need last year. They did that, however those positions didn't include a running back. We found our D-Law replacement with kneeland, we got our center, left tackle (Hopefully), and middle linebacker. The hope must have been that a committee approach at running back, along with a short passing attack, would be good enough for this season. I think the Cowboys were super smart to draft this way, especially given the caliber of RBs coming out this year. We have a path to securing money to sign Micah and draft a game changing RB (Cheaply). I don't know if this plan will work given that we still need pass rushers, but at least I can reason with some of Jerry's decisions.

Dude, the trade makes sense in a lot of ways. Next season the Cowboys are projected to be about 14M under the cap. We'll need to extend both Zack Martin and Micah. Micah currently earned 5M a year, that is expected to jump up to around 35M - 37M.... This means there isn't room to sign Micah, let alone Micah and Zack. One move we will be forced to make is cutting Brandin Cooks because he earns around 8M. We'll still need received depth, Mingo is that depth. You can list all the other WRs that Dallas could have traded for, but none of those guys are 1M a year. Not only that, but Mingo is under a rookie contract for another two seasons. If you're upset about the 4th round pick then consider this. 4th round receivers are rarely about to contribute right away, there is a learning curve. That we now have Mingo we can give him half a season to get up to speed AND he is priced right. This move gives us a 4th round value for sure. But the bigger value is his ability to contribute right away while what freeing up around 7M of cap space. We can't keep ignoring the need to create cap space. Everyone acts like we don't have massive contracts we have to deal with. Mingo isn't a big gamble and he fits an immediate need. It makes sense to me.
