Afghan refugee children unwelcome at Korean school

  • While students of Seoboo elementary school in Ulsan headed to classes on the first day of the spring semester on March 2, 9-year-old Zainab from Afghanistan, who moved to the southeastern port city last month, had to stay at home.
She asked her parents when she would be able to join her peers at school, but neither of them gave her a clear answer, which left the girl more puzzled.
Her father, Gul Agha (as he prefers to identify himself), could not tell his daughter the truth: due to fierce protests from their Korean neighbors, it remains unclear when Zainab would be able to attend the public school.

With South Korea being incredibly homogenous, I think it would benefit the children a great deal to be exposed to faces that look like them. I copypaste my answer to someone's comment here.
Indonesia take a lot of Afghan refugees. We also take a lot of Rohingya refugees and all. However we must remember that being refugee and leaving your country means you should move in hurry, constant mobile lifestyle already carved in your bones.
I think these people went to SK probably because they have someone they already know or family there, or just simply random.
Handling refugee is not easy, we must remember that they're escaping from war, not only we have to prepare them to assimilate with local culture and all, we also have to treat and taking care their trauma. People who lives in anxiety of constant war, their body and mind is functioning and reacting differently with people who born, raised, and lives in peaceful environment.
I saw mostly of them having this mindset: (1) even they seems okay in front of you, in general they are not easy trusting people, even their own people (2) always this anxiety to prepare to escape, or trying to escape, if they feel any slightest worry. (3) they're normalize their mental trauma from war, some probably don't function 'normally' like we expected. Just like war veteran who came back from war. A lot of war veteran having trouble to come back to normal lives for years even in their hometown. And these war refugee not only they have to deal with their trauma, but have to assimilate to very different culture from their culture. It's a nightmare.
In Indonesia we have this trouble when taking care Rohingya refugees, although we treat them as best as we could, and they're basically in general not have much problem assimilate with Indonesian who has same looks (south east asian looks), religion, most of them even could speak Indonesian language fluently, and a lot of things, but deep inside they always have this anxiety. At first we confuse why they're always trying to escape although there's no reasons for that, but then we understand that war refugees or war veteran functioned differently. As sad at it is, it's reality.
The problem is in Asia, we don't really taking care or serious when facing mental illness. Then we forcing them to assimilate with our culture and our way of life. We are trying to be nice with them, I believe they're try hard too, but for them who survived from war, human are wolves.

I can guarantee you if this was Ukrainian white people with blonde hair, blue eyes they'd love to take them in. I guess the American Neo-colonisation did leave a mark on Korea. @Christ Dwell Humanity? Don't give me that . You invaded Afghanistan, Nato therefore all of Europe. So why now run away from your responsibilities? And as for your pathetic lie about increase in crimes, I've looked at most of it, it's usually you people, white, who do it. But you make up bs excuses trying to blame others. And just because it increased after the arrival of the refugees doesn't make it our fault its still you who do it.
And terrorism? You bomb a nation to death and expect love? AQ did what it did on 9/11 because you invaded Iraq and Somalia. If you kept yourself to your lands. No one would've cared. Also you spoonfeed the Zi0nists with billions of dollars of weapons. Who's accountable for that? You. Moreover most refugees aren't even the ones who do it. Just like in America, it's the people from outside who plan and execute it.
And Saudi and Qatar should take them? Been there, they do. They don't have enough land, but they do have lots of refugees. Most of Arabia is inhabitable desert, like in UAE, There are more refugees from Iraq, Syria, Libya etc etc than there are their own citizens. Lived there for 8 years. So I know what I am talking about.
But who's the one who started all this for "freedom"? You did, so why should Saudi and Qatar be given every responsibility while you, who stole our resources under the pretense of peace sit back and enjoy them?
And madarsas are like schools for religion. They don't teach people to hate, rather we want all of us to be of the same religion, you and us brothers..it's like a school for preachers and religious scholars and people who want to take up jobs as judges and what not, and we say you cannot be our friends as you deny the truth about Allah being the Lord God of All, and Jesus the Messiah(Peace and blessings be upon him) being just his messenger and not his Son. And Muhammed(saw) being his last messenger... and are we wrong? The Christians are the closest to us, pagans the furthest. So we don't hate the Christians, but we know you h@te us because we come with the truth that you have spoiled, the truth that Messiah the Son of Mary(peace be upon him) himself brought.. you hated it and so you changed it. And you hate that we the followers of the last Prophet(pbuh) bring the same message back to you and this time you cannot change it to fit to your pleasures. That's why we cannot be friends, it's you h@te us. And I don't think I need to explain it, from crusades to colonization... that was you slaughtering us and you say we hate you for nothing ?
And productivity? You impede our productivity. Iraq was a great nation, full of OIL and MONEY. Had the 4th strongest army, very modern, very well doing. Then what happened? You came and stole it all. Destroyed Iraq and propped up shia regimes and militias and you trade with them, who? The Daesh or as you know them, The !S!S. You pay them money for our oil even till today and then they commit atrocities on us, like literally 95 percent of all their victims are muslims and then you you blame us? Lol.
And why did korea get involved in Afghanistan? Did it have to? no one even cares for korea there, never did. Yet korea thought it would be good to occupy some land with their European masters.
And it's not like those people are the Taliban, they are literally your own allies! You speak as if you were asked to take in the taliban? The people mentioned here are the people Koreans used and were the allies of the Koreans.
And this is precisely why we say you cannot be our friends, this! ... this is how you treat those who call your "friends". And should we then befriend you so you can steal from us and then runaway again like in the past, to enjoy our money by yourself in your own country? Which God forbid should not be attacked! I mean, you killed 100s of millions and when people strike back you cry terr0r? Oh Please.
And then when we, who are supposedly your friends get in trouble because of you, you slander us? And shoo us like we are pathogens?
Those people in korea thought of the Koreans as their friends, look at them now, they cannot even return to Afghanistan as they helped the enemies and they aren't accepted by their "friends". And also, you people come into our nation and try to convert us to Christianity. "3=1", "Muhammed(peace be upon him ) was a liar"? Is this what we should study? In your schools instead of our madarsas?
I say this, Because Koreans most certainly tried to do that, but lets just say, T@liban didn't let that happen. And should we also attend your Christian schools that slander our religion and call for our extermination?
If you cannot even take your own allies with you, then what Humanity and friendship do you talk about?

Situations like this mean the people, on both sides, must adjust and be flexible. They didn't have enough time to consult with people, they needed to get those people out of harm's way. Honestly this isn't a surprise. Being a Korean-American who moved back and is currently living in Korea, discrimination is easily seen here on a daily basis, sometimes more prominent in different cities. For example, in Seoul people don't seem to mind foreigners, Koreans speak good english and old people are less likely to stare or look at a foreigner. But in more conservative cities or small towns, some will outwardly stare, glare, throw insults, or even touch foreigners. Doesn't mean Korea as a whole is bad but society here is still very ingrained in the old ways and can be quite conservative at times. During the early parts of the pandemic I even heard Koreans verbally chastise Chinese people and restaurants and other foreigners during the Delta variant.
Change in mindset will come with time, and Korea is becoming more diverse every year. However thinking that this change will happen overnight is foolish. Korea has a very deep history compared to some Western countries in terms of conservatism. While countries like America, Australia, and Europe have always had multiple people migrate and crossover throughout the years, Asia has been mostly singular. Things WILL change but outsiders need to understand that it will be a slower process in Korea than other countries in the world. Hopefully the kids will be able to attend soon and learn to love the positive side of Korea no matter how long they stay.

When the real answer is only 2%. Korea is an active participant in the global community. It has LONG had allies from Muslim countries, starting with Iran and many Muslim people live and work in Korea. In the last few years the international restaurants have begun flourishing, and this is the first step for many immigrants, since it is the easiest business to start. This is a sign that soon more and more immigrants will come here. This should be seen as a blessing, because the population of Korea is decreasing at a rapid pace. Capitalist economies need constant increase in population and a large labor class to work. I have no idea why the government is not inviting even more foreigners to live and work in Korea. Without a larger population, Korea is set to follow the nightmare in Japan.

They are educated, they have already undergone several security checks in order to be able to hold their previous positions and have had extended contact with Korean government, NGO and military personnel, having likely picked up details about their culture and language previously. Also, it has been mentioned that they are all employed in Korea and have already undergone half a year of integration classes beforehand. These people have risked and lost their homes and lives in their homeland to help the Korean people and went through every step to make settling in and not burdening the Korean people or social systems as easy as possible.
Frankly, at this point, it's the responsibility of the local Korean communities to extend a hand. I understand the concern and lack of knowledge about a foreign culture, but if you truly wish to learn more, the solution is to meet and get to know each other, not to separate and isolate. And concerns such as lowering property values are just despicable and demonstrate a lack of humanity.

The Afghans need to try harder to integrate. Be appreciative of the culture that took you in. Besides the language, learn the Korean culture, their religious values, eat their foods. Don’t bring your narrow values. The Korean doctors who went to Afghanistan to help your people did not ask for their churches or temples to be built in Kabul or to have pork served to them. Please be respectful of others, I know Afghans are capable of an open heart and love for others. I will pray for Afghans not only in Korea but worldwide to be open and accepting to the cultures that take them in 🙏

A phobia is an irrational belief, nothing irrational in dislike of a religion that treats women and property and seeks dominance over all and all aspects of life. The Koran isnt exactly reading for kids…
Islam has bloody boarders even with each other. They don’t belong anywhere in north east Asia, not to mention Korea. They passed dozens of safe Muslim/ similar ethnic/culture lines countries.
They’re not refugees but economic illegal migrants.

What language barrier? When we had some international students back then in my elementary school, we accept them, tried to communicate with them with body languages and signs, and teach them our language. Language barrier is not a valid excuse to reject these children. I think these Korean parents just afraid, and xenophobic, but they wouldn't admit it.
