Darn you, my to-read shelf is already full of books I don't have time to read! Brilliantly worded video, as always! It's just such a pleasure to hear you talk.
This is so, so fantastic. I love that you didn't recommend obvious choices and didn't stick to just YA either. I haven't read any of these and will need to add them to my list!
You really have a way with words. Every time I watch one of your video's I'm just so blown away by the way you choose to describe things. You are an artist with words!
Paper towns! Although i love all of johns books there is a very special place in my heart for paper towns. I remember seeing it on a display plinth in one of the round windows of my school library before Christmas 2011. As a geography nerd i was ready to judge by the cover and take it out immediately but alas was between lessons and couldn't. Over christmas i found the vlogbrothers and decided i was going to take it out and the rest is history! Also first book that made me cry.
Yeah, I was trying really hard to avoid the obvious choices, anything that had already been recommended, ones a lot of people would already know, like Maureen Johnson, Stephanie Perkins, Michael Martin, or Perks. And I tried to cover a range of media/genres : )
Your recommendations are excellent, because I have never heard of any of these books! (So many videos like this only mention books I've heard of a million times and have either already read or lost interest in.)
I never made the connection between the writings of John Green and Jeanette Winterson, but can see why I like both now! Almost straight after reading Oranges are not the Only Fruit (described as 'semi-autobiographical'), I really enjoyed Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? (autobiography).
I read it earlier this year for uni and absolutely fell in love. Read it in a single day, was just in aw, it was so funny, and yet also so painful. And the fairytale references and magical realism? Just perfect. I must read more Winterson!
*Pauses video at 'you might like' and opens goodreads* I love your recommendations :) Great video :) I've only read TFiOS and Paper Towns and by far Paper Towns is my favorite of the two. Fortunately I own 2 more of his novels and will read them soon to be able to have a better opinion of his writing :) [although it's probably safe to say that I'll find it all brilliant anyway]
Hmm, everything I think of is manga (Dragon Ball, Ranma 1/2, etc). The closest I can think of in written form is the YA spy genre which will occasionally involve fight scenes but is fundamentally different and generally has a very different tone and atmosphere.
I might make a video about reading speed but it would possibly be the opposite of what you want. I'm actually quite dyslexic and therefore a really slow reader. Do check out my video 'How to read ALL THE BOOKS' though. It's probably not what you want, but I think you'll find it interesting.
I have all of John Green's noverls, and I decided to read them from the first book written to the last. It was amazing to see how his writing was improving with every book written ;)))
Really good video, I went straight to amazon and bought myself a second hand copy of boy proof on that basis that everyone I know with bookshelves like yours know what they're talking about when it comes to books.
Oh course you will! It's John Green! ^^ It's the summer now so hopefully you'll get some time you can dedicate to them then. Which are the two you've got waiting?
This is the best thing about reading, it connects you to the writers, and those others you read with. Saying that I haven't heard of Blankets or Craig Thompson. I will go google it now!
I completely missed that when I was making this but all you guys are on it. I'm trying to think what I would do if I made a punishment video : P I'm still working my way through Pratchett, currently on Masquerade, it's awesome. Phantom of the Opera, The Witches, and Pratchett; that's all my favourite things at once! My brain just clearly doesn't work the same way as people who don't like John Green.
Speaking of children's books that remind me of TFIOS, have you read Mrs. Biddlebox? It's an incredible picture book written by a woman who ended up dying of breast cancer. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
Looking for Alaska is probably my favourite, mostly because it's the first one I read (but it was the only one of his books out at the time). I usually have a weak spot for the book that introduces me to a favourite author. The Piper's Son or Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta are good ones for people who like John Green. All of her books are great actually. Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley or Anna and the French Kiss might be good for people who liked Paper Towns or An Abundance of Katherine's.
I would recommend The Passion. It's brilliant too! And also, her proper autobiography Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? All her work is just fantastic- well all the ones I've read. :) Tell me if end up liking The Passion, it's got fairytale references galore! :)
I actually managed to convince her to read it again after she came to our book club and told us she thought it was boring and stopped reading! You don't just stop a John Green novel!!! O_O
zareencirce I made a video about his death about a month ago. Trying desperately to get all my unending feels for him into about 4 minutes. It was basically impossible.
I found "Why We Broke Up" by Daniel Handler to be very reminiscent of John's books. It involves young love, heartbreak and dark humor (as expected considering it was written by Lemony Snicket). It also has really wonderful illustrations at the start of each chapter.
Yeah, I can't think of anything either. Roger Zelazny has some well written fights, but his tone is a bit different. I guess it's more common to write fight scenes for visual mediums, although, I must say that the written form has some cool advantages over visual. Oh, well. I guess it's better for me if there's less competition. Thanks for taking the time to think about this. I really enjoy your videos.
I was a little worried by the title...ready to listen to you and see what you had to say. But when you said what the flaw was, I laughed a little bit at myself :P Great recommendation, I'll try to read some. thanks! :)
Thank you for this. I'm in the mood to re-read The Fault In Our Stars now... this shall happen soon. A tenuos link to John Green could perhaps be found in Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go. I guess they both feature characters trying to come to terms with their mortality within the short space of time they are given to do such a thing. They are both heartbreaking, which is a link I guess!
Can I ask you a question? I hope so, so here it goes: When it comes to contemporary YA and children's literature, you seem like the best well read person I've ever encountered. I'm looking for writers who excel in creative fight writing. Something like Scott Pilgrim or Shonen manga/anime, but in a written form. Do you know if anything like that exists? I'm trying to write stuff like that, and I'm looking for inspiration.
Aw thanks : P And, as loath as I am to admit it, I guess John's other commitments make him a better writer, and make him better able to make amazing videos too.
By one other : P I've asked what kinda of forfeit video you guys would make me do. Also I think you'll really like Charm and Strange, definitely try it.
I have Looking for Alaska and An Abundance of Katherines. I used to have Will Grayson Will Grayson, but I loaned it out before reading it and never got it back =/ I also want to read Let it Snow by him, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle.
Hey, have you read Outlander by Diana Gabaldon? I love this series and Starz just picked it up for tv. Something tells me it will be the next best thing.
I'd like to ask you some questions. They are not about the video but I really wonder your answers. How many pages can you read in an hour? Can you read fast? (I think you can :D) Can you make a video about "How to read faster" or something like that? Or maybe can you just give me some advices to read faster? Thanks!
LOVED THIS
Darn you, my to-read shelf is already full of books I don't have time to read!
Brilliantly worded video, as always! It's just such a pleasure to hear you talk.
Aw, awesome. Glad to know others liked it!
This is so, so fantastic. I love that you didn't recommend obvious choices and didn't stick to just YA either. I haven't read any of these and will need to add them to my list!
This is great! I'll have to check out these books.
I love John Green and really wish he'd stop being a dad and having responsibilities and write another book. And I also adore the way you speak.
one of the best stand ins, even if it was unsolicited : D
Definitely, I would totally queue up for a midnight release of it!
You really have a way with words. Every time I watch one of your video's I'm just so blown away by the way you choose to describe things. You are an artist with words!
This was a great video! Thnx for posting, will definitely check out all these books... & I really hope Mr. Green is working on his next novel...
excellent video as always
Thank you *beams*. I just love the scene when they're at the top of that tower, looking down at the world.
Aw thank you, my subscribers are honestly the loveliest people. You guys always make me so happy with your comments ^^
I would be jibberingly happy if he did. The Vlogbrothers both are such heros of mine.
Paper towns! Although i love all of johns books there is a very special place in my heart for paper towns. I really love your voice

Your recommendations are excellent, because I have never heard of any of these books! (So many videos like this only mention books I've heard of a million times and have either already read or lost interest in.)
I think everyone loved their first book best, I think Paper Towns might have been my first : P
Omg, I absolutely love you!!!
The problem with John Green: He rips your heart out and leaves you crying after you finish The Fault In Our Stars
I've now added all of these to my goodreads. I've also added you. YAY.
This was awesome. And I agree with Paper Towns being my favourite :)
Brilliant.
I read it earlier this year for uni and absolutely fell in love. Read it in a single day, was just in aw, it was so funny, and yet also so painful. And the fairytale references and magical realism? Just perfect. I must read more Winterson!

AWESOME!!!!!! Thanks for the book recommendations :P
I think that one's coming up soon for me (as I'm now reading them in publication order). I will need to buy it asap!
I might make a video about reading speed but it would possibly be the opposite of what you want. I'm actually quite dyslexic and therefore a really slow reader.
Do check out my video 'How to read ALL THE BOOKS' though. It's probably not what you want, but I think you'll find it interesting.
Very similar, but I found it sadder because it is Winterson's raw, autobiographical voice- definitely worth the read.
Awesome, I'm sure you'll like it ^^
I have all of John Green's noverls, and I decided to read them from the first book written to the last. It was amazing to see how his writing was improving with every book written ;)))
I think if he did I would just sit here and gibber in astonishment! Thanks ^^
It does make me cry though.
Great video!!
I love her so much! : )
Excellent comment, as always ; )
Really good video, I went straight to amazon and bought myself a second hand copy of boy proof on that basis that everyone I know with bookshelves like yours know what they're talking about when it comes to books.

Hank replied to one of my tweets once. I then ended up having to show my mum the angler fish song just so she understood what I was excited about...
I would recommend The Passion. It's brilliant too! And also, her proper autobiography Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? All her work is just fantastic- well all the ones I've read. :) Tell me if end up liking The Passion, it's got fairytale references galore! :)

It's amazing! Tell me what you think if you get a chance to read it.
I love the way you vlog and SO MANY BOOKS IN THE BACKGROUND :D My favourite is tfios very closely followed by lfa. And I would recommend Gone Girl.
I loved Paper Towns and I love graphic novels. I will read Lost At Sea immediately.
Tfios was definitely my close second. I loved it so much, but Paper Towns, I feel like I have more in common with it.
My favorite is TFiOS, second is Paper Towns :) I'm looking up the books you've mentioned right now.
The Problem with SableCaught... she makes me want to buy and read all the books she ever recommends :)
Awesome, I will go add you back now ^^
I love terry pratchett (may he rest in peace), and am delighted you have discovered him.
zareencirce I made a video about his death about a month ago. Trying desperately to get all my unending feels for him into about 4 minutes. It was basically impossible.

Oh, ok, I'll check it out! *goes off to google*
Paper towns is my favourite too :D
Really haters are going to hate but John is awseome

The problem with John Green: You will read him and nothing will ever be as good anymore!
My favourite is The fault in our stars haha. And then paper town :)
Hehe, there will always be too many books to read!
And thank you, that means a lot ^^
I LOVE ORANGES Aren't the only fruit! XD YAYAY. It's like my favourite book.
Tfios is definitely my second favourite, I just feel I relate to the content of Paper Towns more.
Believe me, I am trying!
I'm watching this on Tuesday, actually...
I really enjoy you enjoying my videos : P
Maybe it's a market you can take full advantage of!
Thank you for this. I'm in the mood to re-read The Fault In Our Stars now... this shall happen soon. A tenuos link to John Green could perhaps be found in Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go. Charm and Strange is a fantastic recommendation bytheway.
I really need to read that (Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?), is it very similar to Oranges?
Aw thanks : P
And, as loath as I am to admit it, I guess John's other commitments make him a better writer, and make him better able to make amazing videos too.
Haha, I didn't even think of that! What would you guys make me do as a forfeit?
I can't really pick a favourite but I think if I had to it would be TFiOS....really need John to write another book soon :D
I've sent this to John. I hope he see's it :)
Aw, thanks ^^
*smiles back*
One day I will just record myself reading out books for hours. Then you can all listen to me read Austen or something.
awesome video. lots of material for my wishlist! I just tweeted this video to John, maybe he'll check it out!!
We'll have to get out the desk- manacles and lash : P
By one other : P I've asked what kinda of forfeit video you guys would make me do.
Also I think you'll really like Charm and Strange, definitely try it.
i dont keep up with the numbers but Darwin's watch is a really good book
YAY. :)
Terry is the bomb, yo.
I'd just imagine the moment I did this one of my parents or siblings would walk in on me and I'd have to try and explain : P
I'd like to ask you some questions. They are not about the video but I really wonder your answers. How many pages can you read in an hour? Can you read fast? (I think you can :D) Can you make a video about "How to read faster" or something like that? Or maybe can you just give me some advices to read faster? Thanks!
I wish I had the confidence to make videos like this!
ah, yes. Thanks for the insight.
OMG OMG OMG SOMEONE ELSE IN THIS WORLD LOVES LOST AT THE SEA o.o
I feel incredibly less alone now.
Have you read blankets by Craig Thompson?
Thanks, m' dear ^^ Drinks soon pls?
I was slightly worried about that as a title, it is a bit provocative but thought as long as people actually watch the first minute it'll be cool : P
Sorry : P I will review it at some point soon, specially for you ^^
My favorite is looking for Alaska!
I will ^^
SableCaught, do you do reviews on self-published books?
Stevie! My poor bank card! HONESTLY! ;)
