      I like the idea, but know that Coventry is bigger than Bradford and Leicester, and Manchester is only not comparable to Birmingham if only the centre is used. Leeds is technically next after Birmingham, then Sheffield.
      By core city only, the biggest in England are Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol.
      Then Coventry, Bradford, Leicester, Nottingham, Newcastle and Brighton. Then the rest.

      In England, a population of 100,000+ is a city, so a lot of them are cities. The other way is by royal designation/cathedral diocese. Example: Bath has a population a bit under 100,000 but has a cathedral. Huddersfield is bigger than Bath, but is still designated as a town. So between the two it makes most sense to go by the 100k rule.

      @@sailing_raptor Pedantic. City is a place where a lot of people live. No one asking 'is it a town or a city?' needs the answer 'the Queen has designated it by statute'. • @sailing_raptor
      @sailing_raptor Год назад

      @@donmontague4107 We live in a parliamentary democracy - no statutory decisions are made by Royalty. The King or Queen are merely used as figureheads. The fact that what constitutes a town or city is a decision made through statute and therefore, by the democratically elected Government. means that this can't be considered as pedantry - unfortunately in this case you can either be right or wrong, there's no middle ground.

      "The Centre for Cities" is the think-tank most used by government when looking at what constitutes a city (see their website). They use the "primary urban area" (PUA) to define this. This means the area covered by the continuous, unbroken urban area. Their definition has the 3 largest cities in the UK as London, B'ham and then Mcr, with B'ham being only marginally larger than Mcr. They inform all sorts of social and urban planning policy. However, their definition is still questionable...when they have Birkenhead as a separate city/PUA to Liverpool. They also don't include bits of Sefton which are clearly in the Liverpool PUA. I do think that Liverpool is unfairly shrunk by lots of measures. I think definitions for London's population seem never applied fairly to other cities. London's population will always include Croydon, but often people suggest that Salford is not part of Manchester...makes no sense...we'll keep debating lol. The idea of "big city" seems so entrenched in the male ego for some reason
