Geraldo (March 12, 1990) - Former Child Stars

- Geraldo's staff named this episode "Starred-Crossed Kids: When Fame Hits ... and Runs."
It's a gathering of seven former child actors and actresses who are asked to comment about how fame at an early age affected them and whether or not they had any regrets.
Geraldo welcomes Danny Bonaduce ("The Partridge Family"), Danielle Brisebois ("All in the Family"), Jon Provost ("Lassie"), Dr. Jeannie Russell ('Margaret' on "Dennis the Menace"), Susan Olsen ("The Brady Bunch"), Butch Patrick ("The Munsters") and Johnny Whitaker ("Family Affair") to the stage.
Commenting from the audience are (Grandpa) Al Lewis and Dr. Paul Reisch (Chariman of the Drama Dept. at New York's High School of the Performing Arts).
I missed the opening credits and introductions; I was probably running around looking for a blank video cassette. Also, at 22:54, there's breaking news regarding a fatal building collapse on Manhattan's upper west side which briefly interrupts the programming.
At the end of the episode is news regarding the arrest of one of Geraldo's panelist - a mere three days before this pre-recorded episode was broadcast.
I love Danny B. He is so honest and doesn’t back down on his life.
He's an ass on here.
@@mikewynne7131I think he was always mental .

With the abusive father he had, he probably did have some issues
Daddy Dearest couldn’t find a job as a writer in Hollywood
Danny got on The Partridge Family and that his Dad abused him and his mother for years out of jealousy and just being a basic A$$
DANNY just retired from being a RADIO legend in SEATTLE..
@@robertsprouse9282 Did you listen to his final show? I got on the radio for the "Make Danny Laugh" segment. Told my joke. He laughed.
Okay, okay...

Al Lewis was wonderful. He had an Italian restaurant on Bleecker Street that was really good.
If he was there when you were dining he came over and said hello.
He was so tall! Although you wouldn't know from The Munsters as Fred Gwynne was even taller!
Geraldo really knew how interrupt his guests.😂
Danny ragging on Geraldo about Capone's safe was classic.
6:51... "You opened Al Capone's vaults (yet found nothing worthwhile, it appears), and you still have a job!"
*BOOOOMMMM!!!!!!*
Best line here 😂
@lloydmarshalljr I loved when Danny used that line because Geraldo can be so arrogant and put people down and he seems to enjoy it.
He did open it but it wasn't sh*t in it
🤣🤣
@@dcole2133and then Geraldo gives him a shot right back, saying he thought Danny was in the safe because no one had seen him for a while.
Danny Bonaduce was a stand out character in the Partridge Family and still is with his own unique and large personality. He had a tough childhood in his home but has continued to fight and make it.
According to David Cassidy, Danny would come to the studio, to the Partridge Family set in the morning, looking like he went 10 rounds with Mike Tyson the night before.

Danny Bonaducci is a trip, and he certainly entertains Seattle from his radio show.
He has retired now. I worry about his health. He's not 100% 😔
I met him in person years ago. He gave me an autographed pic of himself. I’m a redhead also and he looked at me and said, “ nice hair “. I also had a crush on him when I was in the army. I know he has health issues but I wish him well.
I could've met him for a very brief moment, but I was working security at the stadium where the Mariners play. He waved to us all. I think celebrities like some space even if it is a favorite actress or actor from movies and shows; I like. I would respect their space and not beg for an autograph.
I can why they sometimes have security for their children even more than for themselves. We don't live in a nice world..
His radio show in Chicago was a big hit too! I listened to him during my working hours every weekday
I remember when Anissa died. My friend who's like my big sister that lived next door came over with the newspaper and told me knowing I loved Family Affair. I couldn't read yet so she read me the article. I cried. I'll never forget that day.
@QuoteTheRavenNevermore Anissa's death was the first death that I ever grieved. I had just turned 9 when she passed away. Anissa Jones will always have a place in my heart.

Rest peacefully, Alissa. 🕯🕊
I was 9. I remember the news saying that she took LSD and jumped out a window because she thought she could fly. But she didn't take LSD and she didn't jump out a window. She just took too many drugs with the kids she hung out with.
I was named after her and her character.
I WOULD GO BACK TO THOSE DAYS IN A HEART BEAT.😢

Some child actors actually do okay in show business as adults. Jodie Foster, Kurt Russell, Peter Billingsley, Ron Howard to name a few from that era.
I believe those actors had good parents.
I think the ones who didn't crash and burn were the ones that learned and took jobs behind the scenes.
Danny is clearly the life of this panel. Tells it like it is too, like it or not.
DB just exudes ...JERK.
I can't believe I actually watched this when it came out,boy time really goes by fast.

I forgot how much 1990 still had a strong 1988, 1989 late 80s after glow to it. Really didn't wear off until more like 1992 or probably even 1993. It wasn't cool to "act 80s" (i.e. use lingo like tubular or radical) in this time, but people still strongly dressed and wore their hair like the late 80s.

I love Bonaduce 😂❤
Man i used to live in PA when Danny was on the radio..was surreal to hear that one of your fav tv show characters was a local dj.
I was briefly acquainted with Danny in the mid seventies. He was very personable, funny and kind of a bit shy.

Danny Bonaduce is a savage, and really gave it to Geraldo (who deserved it)
He totally did!

Geraldo is a tool.
Geraldo ask for it dont dish it out if u can't take it
Years a I was Facebook friends with Tony Dow, and I see on his page Billy Mumy posted a comment. I responded "Billy Mumy Oh my God, Danger Will Robinson, Danger Will Robinson"! He responded....."Lol, you remember me". I said who could forget the most famous line in the history of tv. That was cool.
All these classic shows are awesome. Especially Dennis The Menace
Never realized how much of an a whole Geraldo was
I started watching Lassie on Roku Live TV. What pleasant, wholesome TV that was and I thought Jon Provost was so excellent as a child, so charming and realistic without coming across as precocious. He was a very cute kid with an adorable dimple and grew up into a very handsome, grounded man. Wonderful.
I loved Family Affair. So sad about that Anissa Jones....
Love Danny ❤️ he's so real, went to school with Johnny Whittaker, he's as nice now as he was then 😊 really enjoyed this❤❤❤❣️
Poor Danny, the final news break announced that he had, once again, been arrested for drug possession (crack cocaine). I'm glad he appears to have gotten his act together, he's refreshingly honest.
I can't stand Geraldo. He's so rude to guests. He asks a question, then immediately butts in while they are answering! He needs to shut up and let them speak.
Yea, ya know, you're right. I never noticed how rude and condescending, just watching how he treated Danny B. How about the "Montel Williams Show", remember that jerk? I was in his audience in the late 90s and I just remember him treating the crowd like they were an insignificant almost inconvenient part of the show that he was too good to interact with. That's just people forgetting that we're all human and at the end of the day we all leave with the same thing, but for me it's what I left behind that matters to me
@@starsoul64 UGH! Montel was a jerk! I especially hated that he had an even bigger jerk on his show often, that fake "psychic" Sylvia Browne who ripped off and hurt a lot of grieving families, such as Amanda Berry's family.
Sylvia cruelly insisted to their faces that Amanda was dead and they'd never see her again.
Amanda was being held hostage along with other young women for @ 10 years, so she was alive the whole time Sylvia was telling them to accept their daughter's death.
In the case of 11-year-old Shawn Hornbeck, Browne told his parents he was dead and had been kidnapped by a dark-skinned man with dreadlocks. Five years later, Hornbeck was found alive and had been abducted by a Caucasian man with short hair.
Her false "predictions" often involved perps who were black, and she often said that abducted children were being sold as sx slaves in Japan. Absolutely no proof of that, she was just a vile, lying, bigot.

Some child stars were spared the alcohol & drugs "world"! Ron Howard was 1!!
Erin Murphy was another who avoided drugs… She was the twin selected to be the regular Tabatha on Bewitched. Twins played the role at first but then just Erin. I saw her on a similar show about troubled former child stars. She felt so bad for them and said her paychecks were invested and earned a tidy some that all went to her as an adult. She said no one took advantage of her on or off set…

It's a life they chose, when we were kids we were earning 5 dollars over the weekend.

They could afford to indulge all their childhood fantasies, buying boats, the latest bikes, high end stereo systems and Tvs etc, being adored by the public.

Danny handled Geraldo like a pro. Geraldo is such a jerk. Some of his questions are out of line. He also kept cutting people off before they could answer a question. Where did he find that quack of a so called doctor? His comments were very insulting. If Geraldo didn’t want to do this particular show, he should’ve backed out of it. He acted like he didn’t want to be bothered.

David Spade played in "Dickie Roberts" as a washed-up former child actor in a movie that, at the end, had dozens of former child actors sing a song entitled, "Child Star". Danny Bonaduce was one of them.
Bonaduce was kind of a veteran of the Former Child Star talkshow lineup back on the day. Eventually he even got his own short lived talk show.

This has been proved to be true over the years since his show was on the air
Geraldo is an an a**hole, always was, always will be.
He cut Butch Patrick off when he was about to speak on "another story" that I definitely wanted to hear.
I enjoyed Butch (and Al Lewis, of course!) the most, okay maybe tied with Johnny because I've always loved him and already knew that he's a good guy, even though his 1969 movie, "The Littlest Angel", upset me as a kid.
I was too little to fully understand death, and ran from the room crying and refused to watch the movie after his death scene. "They let Jody die!"😭 I was inconsolable.

Susan Olsen is gorgeous. Just watching her here, you would think she’d have gotten another good role (kinda like Susan Dey got on LA Law in the ‘80s)
She kinda reminds me of present day Drew Barrymore a little.
Susan Dey is a good actress. Did better as an adult than as a child. Susan Olsen has always been just so-so, IMO. The Waltons had a better field of talented child actors than nearly any show I've seen. The overall writing of the show was key.
@@godlypursuit5134Being a so so actress hasnt stopped stopped alot of people.
Watching this brought back sooooo many memories of those times. Great stuff!! ❤
I think Anissa was going through something more tragic (sinister) going on, either behind the scenes in the industry, or in her home life. She always looked extremely sad in photos, and in the very few interviews she did. My thoughts was she was being (s) abused. I think it was also the reason she got on drugs. Most (s a) victims do. I always feel so sad for her. 💔
Plus, Jay North (Dennis) was physically abused constantly by his aunt and uncle. He said in an interview he’d never watch an episode unless he wanted to make himself be physically sick. He said to keep your children OUT of the business. I agree. It’s an evil business, not the glam life people imagine it to be.
There is also Robert Blake’s story on the Rascals.
I read somewhere that when she began to "develop" the producers didn't want it to show, so they bound her chest. I think she was around 13 at the end of the series? But they kept her looking like she was 10. 😢
I often think abuse is what drove a lot of child actors to drug abuse. There was even rumors of abuse of the Our Gang actors 💔
@holylandfan3275 At least Jay had a sense of humor about it when he appeared on an episode of HBO's Not Necessarily The News as a grown up Dennis The Menace who goes on a killing spree.
I read her mom was abusive. I read she resented playing Buffy as a young pre teen.
I loved seeing all of these actors/actresses from my growing-up years. Something that I saw that I found annoying was how Geraldo would ask a question, then one or two words from the person, he would interrupt with another question. Anyway, lol, thanks for posting. I really enjoyed it.
Johnny Whittaker was the ORIGINAL "Scottie Baldwin" on "General Hospital" (now played by Kin Shriner). "Scottie" is the LONGEST-RUNNING character on a TV show in television history!

Paused about 11:30 in... I remember reading or hearing accounts of then-teenaged Judy Garland, during her time in *THE WIZARD OF OZ,* being jacked up on uppers because the MGM honchos wanted her to "keep up" during the production of the film. Even her costar Margaret Hamilton (played the wicked witch; was herself a teacher before doing this movie) mentioned such things.
It’s a very evil business.
Thanks for the news clip. To bad the Geraldo show interrupted it
Danny reminds me of Peppermint Patty from Charlie Brown 😂
There was nothing in Al Capone‘s vault but it wasn’t Geraldo’s fault. ( Homer Simpson)
You can't tell this was filmed right after the 1980s! Big hair!! Clothing styles have changed as well!
This is so sad to watch. I feel that they were very cautious during the show. Not wanting to say or denounce anyone probably some of them still wanted to work. They were abused by their parents and Hollywood pedophile producers. These precious actors have my compassion.
17:43 Danielle Brisebois was great as Molly in the original Broadway cast of Annie but Geraldo is off-base. The original Annie was Andrea McArdle and she was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in the original 1977 production which Danielle was in. Even Danielle seemed a little confused by Geraldo’s comment that she received better accolades than the lead. It wasn’t a contest as the whole original cast is legendary.
Interestingly, Danielle became a successful songwriter and was nominated for an Academy Award for one of her compositions from a movie soundtrack.
Love "you only get what you give". New Radicals rocked that summer!
And Susan Olson wrote p*rn music. 🤣 She's joked about it for years.
