@@Junitunes I can't speak for the OP, but I also can't stand her. Her entire practice is tainted by what I'd assume is her previous history with a restrictive ED. She gives advice thats mostly only applicable to normal weight women or those who also have a restrictive ED.
Meanwhile that same advice is highly damaging to anyone on the opposite side, who have problems with chronic overeating/obesity, or those of us with food addiction.
Her refusal to professionally qualify her statements is what gets me because she should know better. She should know better than to give advice as if it applicable to everyone.....especially when a lot of her advice is applicable to only a small portion of the population (underweight and low end normal weight women)
And it's been a while but I think she also claimed that "food addiction" isn't real, but I could be misremembering.
Basically her perspective is very biased and out of touch, so her advice is similar.

I remember her losing her mind over an influencer who posted about her wedding. The wedding was honestly spectacular, and she served copious amounts of foods that covered pretty much any dietary requirement and were just generally delicious. She herself ate a lot (meaning she enjoyed all of the foods herself without restricting). She did offer guests options for sugar free desserts and also had a digestive supplement on all the tables if people wanted it (not sure if the company was sponsoring her wedding, or what). Abbey lost her mind at this girl. And now here she is peddling what is essentially a very middle of the road, overpriced protein powder and she is actively lying in her video and on her website about how unique and beneficial it is. She has long been a mean girl who loved hating on other women, and who has been projecting her restrictive ED onto everyone else and shilling "intuitive eating", but this is a whole new level of ick.

As someone with IBS, I can see why “oh just take some probiotics” would be really appealing, especially since, for many people (myself included), what it takes to control IBS is much more difficult and complicated. My gastroenterologist told me to follow a low FODMAP diet, and while it helps, it’s incredibly restrictive and also not particularly healthy in the long term. So I can see the appeal of a supplement like this, but I also think that you need to be really careful in how you market it towards people who are (like myself) desperate for relief. Claiming that it will treat IBS without substantial evidence to back that up is irresponsible, and it feels really icky to prey upon people’s hopes and desperation with something that probably doesn’t do what it claims to do.

Toddlers are a different case... Their appetites can change rapidly and they can be unpredictably picky. Sometimes you have to focus just on getting enough calories into them.
They don't need gobs of food most of the time - they're active but small. Their needs go up during growth spurts. My guess is that their infamous pickiness has more to do with variable nutritional needs.
Adults often way overestimate how much food a toddler needs. Just a few peas may be the right portion of peas for them, for example. Just put small amounts on their plate or in their bowl and hope for the best... Also be ready with good snacks because the problem may be not being able to eat enough at once.

I also used to follow Abby. I stopped after she had her last child. She had a whole video about orthorexia and how she had it in college and she stopped eating bread and dairy and how getting rid of whole food groups is not sustainable for weight loss. Which makes sense. You shouldn't get rid of whole food groups, you should just add healthier options to your diet. Then she came out with a video about how she was having stomach issues. So she went and got tested and the test results said that she should stop eating bread and dairy... This was literally right after she had her son. So instead of being honest and telling her audience that she wanted to get back to her pre-baby weight, she goes through this whole thing to prove that she has some kind of stomach problem in order to cut out bread and dairy. I was done at that point...🙄

Trust me you can still be fat by being gluten and dairy free. It’s not most peoples choice for weight loss when staying at a healthy weight.

Also often the probiotics are needed only occasionally or only for a certain period. Same with enzyme supplements.
With probiotics, I look for a variety of strains in high doses (50 to 100 CFU per dose) for occasional or short-term use. (CFU means colony forming units.) You may find that daily dosing is not needed, which saves some money.
If you take antibiotics, nowadays it's suggested that you take probiotics during treatment but just isolate the dosing of the two by at least two hours on either side (before/after). This works better than the old recommendation of finishing the antibiotics before hitting with the probiotics to replenish the friendly flora slaughtered by broad-spectrum antibiotics. You will lose a lot due to the antibiotic killing or inhibiting reproduction of the friendlies along with the pathogen, but many will survive.
With enzymes, if production of specific ones is down for any reason, usually supplementation is needed for only a certain time (such as 1-2 months) before your own production is up to speed. Of course some people have chronic issues and need longer and more intensive treatment.

Just because someone has a degree does not guarantee that they are good at what they do. Abbey has often said things that do not seem right to me. I am a full-fledged chemist (Ph.D.) and have decades of experience doing translation of pharmaceutical, microbiology, and usually drug-related biomedical clinical trial materials in all phases of trials. I also have multiple food allergies and have been eating vegan (oops, plant-based) for decades. I have more nutritional background as a result than many and also considerable other relevant background.
Abbey also seems awfully gullible about people I know to be pathological liars...
Basically, I don't trust her expertise in such things and she also has been doing ads for her product without identifying them as ads. Her judgment is simply not that good. She is not useless, but you need to be skeptical about what she says unless you can verify it easily yourself. Go ahead and try her recipes, you can tell if they are tasty or not.
I also am very aware of the reliable market in vegan protein drinks and powders and in probiotics and enzyme supplements. I am not impressed by her claims about those either. There are reputable companies that have been selling both for decades and her choices don't even seem as good. Her prices are insane compared to the high end of typical products that do definitely conduct good research and insist on quality source materials (and will drop best sellers if they can't get the quality they want). She is implying she is the first and only one to care about such things, which simply is not true. I have better background than she does to be able to read the relevant research and reports and understand the figures.
So yes, this does seem like a cash grab way beyond normal interest in profit. I have no way to know if she really believes what she says or not. She is gullible in other ways so she could be ripe for being a naive shill for crazy claims. This endeavor doesn't seem even like good business practice to me, so someone is hoping to ride to a windfall on the coattails of her following and then it will quietly fade away.

I used to have the worst IBS. My stomach would hurt so bad & sometimes diarrhea would happen otherwise times nothing & just laying in the fetal position.
My husband went to a health food store & bought me a probiotic just specifically for this. It’s 2 months worth cost about 60.00 & it’s required to be refrigerated.
It’s amazing I can’t think of the brand & name right now but as soon as I get the first cramp I take a tablet & literally 20 minutes after the pain is gone. My husband has a bad stomach too with a lot of pain. He only takes them when he knows there’s going to be a flair up.
I at one point was living on Imodium & now maybe once a week if I’ve eaten something that causes me a flare up boom I’m better.
I think if this particular one hadn’t worked for me & even my husband I would have went to another brand or something with more probiotic in it. It’s about shopping around. I could never bring myself to purchasing something that has 20 servings for 100.00. This woman sounds nuts & very hypocritical. I do know when I worked out a lot I did buy a protein powder that was about 70.00 & made a smoothie with it. I at least got a lot out of that bottle of protein powder. It was my breakfast everyday. More so worth the money.
Thanks for covering this & exposing her in what she thinks is good. Different strains of probiotics work different for everyone. Same with when choosing a protein powder.

I had watched some of her videos (i also have a dietetics degree from a different country) and I cant remember what she said, but there were a couple of videos which were dubious or in my opinion incorrect, so i unfollowed.
Also in my country, a registered dietician cant do this, you cannot promote a singular brand, we used to always have to list different brands, supermarkets etc. The only time this didnt apply was when there wasnt another version. There was one of those yoghurt drinks and only one at the time contained a specific compound (plant stanols) which may have been beneficial to help those with high cholesterol, so we could recommend it by name, but her supplement does not seem distinct enough to be promoted alone.
And as someone who isnt registered while i have the degree i cannot term myself a dietician. I think greater regulation of who uses what term, quailifcations and strict non competing for all promoting health advice should be required for all registered dieticans.

Obviously there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but when she cooks she flusters like she doesn't now what she's doing, and only ever seems to do simple low intensity exercise.
However, she's absolutely tiny. So she's eating way more calories than anyone she covers, and is exercising less, but is still just as small. My theory is she barely eats when she's not filming, and she just does meal videos to make it seem like she eats lots.

You can get much cheaper plant based protein powders or drinks that do the exact same thing. Also combining pea protein and another plant based protein source is typically what most plant based protein powders already do. It is not unusual to see a plant based protein powder use two or more difference protein sources. She also pushes the idea that you cannot get enough of all the protein amino acids on a plant based diet (which is untrue) and then uses this to justify buying her protein powder. As long as you eat a varied plant based diet you will be perfectly fine. The problem arises only if you are just eating one food for the entire day. Which I would assume most people don't do.

    • @jwoolman5
      @jwoolman5 6 месяцев назад +1

Yes. I'm a chemist myself and you are absolutely correct on all points.
Eating vegan really isn't rocket science. The worst that will happen is that we don't use some of the ingested amino acids in our plant-based foods because we have those in excess in the pool when we use up the others to make our own proteins. If we eat enough food and some variety, we should be fine without obsessing.
I've been keeping protein powders on hand for when I'm sick or injured for decades, because my appetite goes to zero easily in such situations and I just can't deal with most foods then. Some fasting in the early stage is therapeutic but other times, not really - I just get weak.
For a long time, the best vegan-friendly formulas have included several types of protein. Soy or pea protein plus rice protein plus a couple of different seeds like hemp and chia are typical, for example. They end up with a blend that has the same amino acid profile as the egg, the beloved of the carnivores as their gold standard. (No, you don't need a "perfect" ratio of amino acids in one food. That's just marketing.)
I would advise using separate protein and probiotic supplements since they are used very differently. I wouldn't want to force daily use of a probiotic in particular because that may not be needed while for a time you may want daily protein supplementation.
Protein from any source is first broken down by the body to extract the individual amino acids, which are available for a few days. Then those amino acids are used to make our own protein molecules. We do not plunk animal protein molecules unaltered into our own cells for use in structures and transport etc. Our needed protein molecules are different from those of pigs and cows and chickens.
Even fats are altered to suit our own fat storage cells, although it is still possible to identify their origin from structural details. What we call fats and oils in our foods are actually complex mixtures of various substances. They are not a single type of what chemically would be considered a fat.

she's saying that "most protein powders" don't have those additional ingredients/supplements in them to support absorption, when actually yes they do. i can't speak for plant protein powders because i have never used them and plant protein is not a very bioavailable form for protein for humans anyway (and tends to be more expensive anyway because it's a specialized/fad product). protein powder for most regular people isn't essential but for some people it really can be. it sounds like she's trying to combine probiotics and protein simply to attach her "knowlege" and qualifications to and charge more. definitely a money grab, but this doesn't surprise me from abby, ever since she started getting involved in politically motivated circles (fat/death acceptance, body positivity etc) she went down a really sell out path and totally strayed away from commenting on what she knows and was educated to comment on. i stopped watching her when she started trying to say that modern body positivity and fat acceptance (and the ideas they push) are totally ok and healthy - it was the most hypocritical thing i have seen from a health and diet focused professional.

I followed her until she started doing supplements/powder
Like- she was constantly saying you don’t need it but then comes out with them? Some of her content is great- but then you get stuff like this.
Shame- she was a creator who helped me get out of a lot of diet culture bs

That's why I quit following Greg Doucette (him and Abby used to "beef")

Objectively, wouldn't the next step to poo-pooing all the other protein shakes because it's not to your standards be to just make one yourself? As long as you had the resources and time to do so of course. Price point and hypocrisies aside, that is what she did and what most people would do if given the opportunity, so I just don't understand the specific criticism there.🤷🏼‍♀️
