    Magnet isn't opensource so definitely a reason to use amethyst.

      Good point. I was just getting into FOSS at the making of this video, and I use Yabai now.

      First question - does Amethyst do the seamless windows set when I move them to the edges? If no then it is not an alternative

    Nice vid - Allocate even numbers to workspaces on your main monitor, odd to the secondary if you dual screen - you'll know where to look as you click. If you're already a gamer with no Vim experience, consider WASD remap for arrows and use the right hand for Shift and Control keys (+ it frees up K for Kill) - you'll be blistering fast in a day. Select the TWM for workflow not real estate. If you're in the business to earn, you'll be cross platform, portable muscle memory matters - i3 (Linux), GlazeWM (Windows) and Magnet with keyboard shortcuts works for me, YabAI is cool but SIP (System Integrity Protection) deprecation is a hassle. Look out for old guys on EMACS, they're cranky but like Chuck Norris on crack with workflow.

    Thanks you for this, I am getting a mac book from my new employer, and now I won't hate it. Amethyst seems like best option to me as Linux user coming from tiling GNOME.

    I like Swish, but using its arrow keys option instead of the trackpad to snap windows. I just moved to it from Magnet. I like swish a bit better because it lets you move windows between spaces and screens

  • @casadogaspar
    @casadogaspar 3 года назад +3

    Option + Shift + Space is the command on amethyst to circle between the stack formats, there are some others that you didn't show in the video.
    Amethyst can send windows between external and internal screens, and etc, etc.
    It's based em Monad window tiling manager, so yes its has a bigger learning curve, but just like vim, if you learn it you can take the benefits of a lot of stuff you don't even know exist.

    • @christopherkapic
      @christopherkapic  3 года назад

      I'm using Yabai right now, but Amethyst has the edge in a couple categories. I think the ideal WM for me would be Yabai with a master/stack layout, but I don't have the patience to figure that out and submitting a pull request.

  • @trd2418
    @trd2418 2 года назад +1

    I think amethyst has a steep learning curve. But at the end you only need like 2-3 Keyboard commands. The others are cool too, but most of the time amethyst does a really good job on its own.

    I had Amethyst, and I didn't like it. Then I switched to Spectacle. That was better, but sometimes the shortcuts didn't work. Now I'm using Rectangle, and it works fine -- and it's free.

    • @christopherkapic

      I have also switched to Rectangle. I'm happy with it.

  • @trd2418
    @trd2418 2 года назад +1

    I think some of the commands you used with amethyst can be done way more easily. For example the cycling through layouts is way easier than remembering the keyboard shortcut for each layout itself.

    What a long hard PAID way to do window management !!
    If you truly want to be impressed with window mangement done right and FREE, take a look at the Linux distro called POP OS by System76.
    Anything else is over priced and inferior.
    In POP OS, in the menu bar you toggle a switch on/off to turn the tiling on or off and that is basically it !!
    I open one app and it automatically opens fullscreen, the next app half screen, the next app half off one half, the next app 1/4 and so on. Resizing any window is a simple click and drag of your mouse and swtching between windows is hold Windows key and use the arrow keys. Each window is highlighted with a large orange border as you click and arrow to it. Or you can simply click on it with a mouse.
    When you shut down the computer the tiling feature stays on or off and works automatically again. SIMPLE !!
    I use Mac OS, Windows 11 and POP OS and only POP OS has a decent windows manager period.
    MAC OS will continue to be the worst operating system of the 3 until it can come up with a native window magement system like POP OS. There is NO reason why Apple couldn't as both are built on UNIX.
