    🚨🚨 this is a rabbit hole!!
    I wanted to use the mouse less when my hand started hurting
    I slowly started using keyboard shortcuts for more and more thing
    I started getting addicted to the speed
    I started customising everything for minimum keystrokes and speed
    i switched to linux when it became abundantly clear that it's wayy better for my need for speed ( tiling window managers )
    I currently run dwm on arch linux with terminal apps for everything
    I do node js android development with my cats and anime wallpapers

      It’s a slippery slope. Switching to HJKL arrow keys is as close as I’ve gotten to switching to Linux.

      Can also fully recommend the ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II for hand strain. It's better than the mac keyboard, very light, and holds a charge for ages. The trackpoint is awkward at first, but once your brain realizes that when mousing (track-pointing) your fingers stay on the home row, it just takes off.

    I wanted yabai to work, but this just works out of the box. thanks!

    • @unlink1649
      @unlink1649 11 месяцев назад +4

      Yabai has some annoying interactions with some apps and it's heavily reliant to be configured manually to ignore certain window parts and subwindows. It's just hard man. That being said, I'm used to Yabai and how it works. I tried amethyst and was appalled by its lack of constiency. When opening new windows, they were sometimes floating, sometimes amethyst would tile them. If anything is a dealbreaker with tiling managers, this kind of inconsistency is.

      @@unlink1649 Yeah, after a long time trying to configure everything the best way for me I simply gave up from BSP and started using Yabai in stack mode. Most of the time I prefer to keep windows in fullscreen so it does the job for me, I switch windows with AltTab or mission control.

  • @wadecodez
    @wadecodez 8 месяцев назад +2

    my setup is yabai, skhd, and sketchbar. i like it because i can override the hotkeys for mission control and switch between desktops without an slow animation. the caveat is you have to toggle a few system flags which technically make your system less secure.

    please re-edit the topic as ‘go through tiling window managers on mac’ something like that. Otherwise people would expect a comprehensive comparison between yabai and amethyst, which the video is NOT. Because I was misled in fact.

    I find this key setup super weird
    I've been using amethyst for years now and I love my setup
    Change Tiling Mode Forward: Alt + Shift + Space
    Change Tiling Mode Back: Alt + Shift + Ctrl (capslock) + Space
    Shrink Main Pane: Alt Shift H
    Expand Main Pane: Alt Shift L
    Move Focus Counter Clockwise: Alt Shift J
    Move Focus Clockwise: Alt Shift K
    Swap Focused Winder Counter Clockwise: Alt Shift Ctrl J
    Swap Focused Winder Clockwise: Alt Shift Ctrl K
    Change Macos Space Left: Ctrl Shift J
    Change Macos Space Righ: Ctrl Shift l
    Inside Terminal and Nvim:
    change split left: Ctrl J
    change split right: Ctrl L
    this way everything kind of follows a common theme

    I like SlideUp for tiling + Keyboard Maestro for focusing commonly used apps. Seems like a good balance, but I've recently purchased a 34" monitor which has made me revisit my tiling software (since SlideUp only does left/right regions. I kinda need a "middle" region now)

    • @BrandonKBoswell

    I have Karabiner Elements set up with a hyper key, but I can't find any rules to control Yabai monitors or scaling like you demonstrate. Am I missing something? Id really like to be able to do this. New video request.

    • @BrandonKBoswell
      @BrandonKBoswell  2 года назад +2

      The scaling, tiling and monitor switching was all in Amethyst which I’ve been using since I recorded this video. I highly recommend it.
      I’ve been using Amethyst for about 6 months now, let me know if it would be useful to share what that workflow looks like now.

    • @BrandonKBoswell
      @BrandonKBoswell  2 года назад

      I'm not sure that I completely understand your issue, but you can configure your layouts by right-clicking on the Amethyst icon in your menu bar and setting which layouts you want. Three columns is an option.

    • @BrandonKBoswell
      @BrandonKBoswell  2 года назад

      I’m not sure (on an Intel Mac). The app is snappy and lightweight on Intel, so my guess is that it will run well, but I don’t have an M1 to test it on.

    • @cadetriestocode

      I think yabai is optimized for m1 (you can compile it for arm64 architecture) with the --HEAD flag when installing with brew
