      It's insane how many shoot outs on youtube have thousands of dollars of gear but worse production values than a drunken soccer mom doing a conference call. All gear, no brains, and seemingly no ears. It used to be ironic, but now it's just depressing. Either approach the test scientifically or artistically, but don't do neither...

    The Neuman U87 without a doubt, however ... that WA87 for a fraction of the cost is a really good alternative, but the targeting audience is not the same IMO. I'm pretty sure people are going to buy the WA87 b/c they can't afford the U87.

  • @connernealon6015
    @connernealon6015 6 лет назад +24

    The Neumann has a much more detailed high end. The stock WA87 is modeled after a vintage U87 so it is a bit warmer but lacks the definition in the high end and low mids. I modded a WA87 with an AMI T13 transformer (same as the zenpro mod) and found that it tightened up the mids and some of the high end.

    The room didnt sound "horrible" like some folks claimed. This is a quickie video done for everyone's benefit so back off on the angry comments guys! The WA87 sounded pretty close but the Neumann is the NEUMANN U87 the mothership of all mics so - if you have 3K to invest in ONE mic then go for it. On the other hand, for relatively cheap dollars I think you could easily adjust your EQ and compression settings (either hardware or plugin) to get some really good tones out of the WA87. What if you get a small tube mic preamp as well? You could make some great sounding stuff I think.

    • @raywilson7209

      I wonder how the folks at Neumann would feel if they saw this "quicky video"? Who actually benefits from this?

  • @UltraSteaKME

    Are you kidding me ? On the band, one mic is masking the other, levels are not the same, and the rooms sounds so bad that you probably have a node/antinode which is different at both mic positions. 5cm/2’’ is the wavelength of about 7000Hz… It would have been better to set them one above the other, but not perfect anyway.
    Your voice give the evidence of something going wrong with the band recording, as we do not have the same differences in the booth. The resonance in the booth is so annoying that it is difficult to judge. But both mic are different, and I don’t think one is better than the other anyway. So regarding to the price…

    Also add friends that the WA87 is modeled after the vintage version of the u87, which we own. Your modern U87's are a bit brighter with a tad bit bump in the 10k where as the vintage was extremely flat and almost colored. But the room demo does make it very hard to tell. Better on the voice over section of the video. Still prefer the original but for the buck on a very nice mic pre tracked by a great A/D converter you can still get some great performances on the WA87. We do use it quite a bit for voice overs.

    • @Leele0
      @Leele0 4 года назад

      i agree with you on this. there was a massive difference when the band was playing between both mics. definitely a much brighter clear sound than the wa87. that 10k bump was extremely noticeable.
      on the voice over part, however, I did not seem to feel that huge of a difference really...there was a tiny bit, but nothing major.

  • @robertvaleska8495
    @robertvaleska8495 6 лет назад +12

    The wa-87 sounded boxy and somewhat tin sounding on the voiceover though not a lot. The u87 shined on the voiceover it's very pristine, buy seemed to have just a bit much high end presence on the band. U87 is the winner for me. But the warm audio is very good considering the price point.

  • @db9091
    @db9091 6 лет назад +4

    The U87 was more crisp, had greater clarity, and a tad "brighter". I preferred it. That said, the WA87 was fantastic (ealier compared to the Behringer B1 it was a no-brainer way better clarity) and on Announcing it was harder to tell the difference. The Top ends were much more noticeable, but both had a smooth top end and a pleasing bottom. You get what you pay for, but mic advancements have really come a long ways for lower ended ones. Sounded better than my former Neumann TLM103 at any rate which is double the price of the Warm Audio.

  • @MegaMacTV
    @MegaMacTV 6 лет назад +2

    C'mon, people. The difference is realistically negligible, at least in these environments. Anyone who's hearing anything drastically different is hearing what they want or expect to hear. True, the U87 is indisputably the "golden standard", if you can afford it or not. However, this video proves you can obtain a comparable sound that anyone not scrutinizing it through top-of-the-line playback equipment would hear otherwise, for much less.

  • @LukeMaynard

    If I'm listening as hard as I can, through quality headphones in silence, I can hear that 5% of extra sparkle from the Neumann which wasn't there in the WA87, and to be fair, may not have been there in the vintage U87s it's based on either.
    But I don't think anyone's ever going to listen for the difference as diligently as I did. And I don't think there's much in that extra $3,000 worth of sparkle that a good producer or engineer couldn't adjust for in the studio through the right preamp. Heck, the "air mode" on the under-$200 Focusrite Scarlett interface that a ton of home studios are using now might correspond exactly to the difference between these two mics. Turn on Air Mode for the WA87, turn it off for the U87, and suddenly you've worked around a huge price difference with 95% effectiveness.

  • @Sleepysidney
    @Sleepysidney 6 лет назад +1

    Kinda unfair test as the u87 is louder than the wa87 in the band recording. The voice over revealed a little more lows/low mids on the wa87 which isn't necessarily a bad thing and nothing that a little eq work won't help.

  • @deleteduser8507
    @deleteduser8507 4 года назад

    These mics are made for VoiceOver, and to talk within 6-3 inches of them. Even being in a studio doesn't change anything if you are 2 feet away. And they are not made for band sessions....I would recommend treating your studio, and learning proper mic protocol before spending $3200 on a microphone...or even $600.

    To be fair the Warm is based on the Vintage 87 not the "i" version so it's a cheeky shootout, but the Warm sounded pretty damn fine even against the 87 reboot and at a fraction of the cost. The Warm crew really put some effort into creating that old school vibe (check out the specs and design info) and it works. Instead of being retro though Aston in the UK are building mics moving forward at really amazing prices. I bought an Aston Spirit for Pro V/O's and getting great results for all my clients also at a reasonable sub $1000 price range.

      You're right the Big Name Brands Sell, whether it's cars, bikes, home appliances or mics. I aspire to owning a Neumann because that will always attract more business to my studio than lesser known brands. Lately I'm torn between the Neumann TLM 67 and the good ol' boy U87Ai. In a shootout on RUclips the former actually sounded better for at least 1K less cash. Brand Snobs always go with the Germans even if the UK, USA or AUS is making great mics.

  • @kites4121

    The U87 sounds louder. The U87 may be more compressed / have less dynamic range. Were the tracks normalized manually or automatically, for peak or for loudness? Those are important details for a mic shootout. The U87 sounds noticeably brighter on the percussion and guitars. I'm guessing you're using the a new U87 since they are said to sound brighter than the older ones. It might be that the diaphragm of the WA-87 has more mass and so is less responsive to transients.

    To be honest here, I'm not wearing my headphones, just earbuds, I hear a difference in the room recording but absolutely no difference when it came to the spoken word side by side comparison. I've heard that the WA signal is not as hot as other mics, so you have to bump up your pre a little. Wearing headphones could very well tell a different story...

    I have to agree with many of the comments, the recording itself is a horrid way to showcase these mics, pick 1 instrument, pick 1 voice but not to do a room ambiance recording. That said, the timbre of the shaker was much more present when switching to the true Neumann, in fact at one point around 1:35'ish the change became so obvious it jarred me a little. I like the idea of a 500 dollar replica and could likely get it to sound quite good but this was not the way to bring it out.

    recording is luxury. so is making music. given that said. .. I have a flawless environment and can tell you that, they both sound ok with my singers . I prefer the 47 over all microphones built. I must say that there is room for stereo WA87s in my studio as we already have 87s and are tired of crystal clear overheads. Nobody is really into that . In general, 87s find their way in front of acoustics over here . .. sometimes . Who needs the top end that was designed to cut thru an old tape machine when you know you're recording onto a mac with a hard disk ? No need for 16k on tape. Show them well , and let them lead the way .

  • @Yourveryowncarrot
    @Yourveryowncarrot 5 лет назад +2

    I actually liked the full band recording better than the careful studio recording because you could notice the immediate difference in the frequency response between the two mics, where in the studio recording you have to concentrate extremely hard to find the disparities.

    I realy don't hear any difference in solo. Therefore the price of WA-87 turns out to be the key factor in this battle. Maybe if I downloaded wave files and switched on my i-louds then I would hear a bit of difference... But I didn't 😂 The sofa won!

    For me U87 sounded more bright and open and warm audio had more warmth witch i personally like!
    the differences were not that much that i tought , and you can do a lot in mixing that no body care and undrestand!!
    So with considering the budget if i wanted to select one, i would go for warm audio!!! i say it again! budget.

  • @petermeier1910

    Warm Audio tried to get close to the sound of the older model of the Neumann U87, therefore the sound is less bright.
    The recorded voice samples shown here are really not good ... you can here traffic (or train) noises from outside which definitely affects the possibility to compare the two mics.

  • @TheSickNeeds
    @TheSickNeeds 6 лет назад

    would love to see an SM58 thrown into the mix just for a different vocal mic so there is a third thing to compare.... comments are saying more this and more that....but really by how much? an SM58 in there to compare might put things in perspective. I don't see a drastic enough difference to warrant a $3000 difference especially with the loud garagey music I play.

    I think a lot of ears are use to the u87 thru conditioning of years of hearing it’s better cause of the name. Yes it’s a great mic but if the Warm was the mic before the u87 people who say the same thing about the warm87. It’s a preference thing An a perception thing. While the u87 actually sounded thinner than the warm87 the u87 had a slight clearness Jus a slight. Thurr is no real winner it’s about what YOU like. In life we have polarity an so it’s the degrees that make a person place or thing what it is you need it to be. The Warm87 would be jus fine for any application

      Zhivanov except there’s no such thing as a 50s u87 so you have no idea what you’re talking about and the u87ai wins in this comparison, especially being as that’s the mic the other one is trying to mimic. Lol

    This video is wrong and extremely inaccurate on so many levels ... FYI the u87 is NOT the most common radio mic nor are condenser mics but I’ll leave it at that - do your own research and avoid this video and likely these clowns altogether as clearly they either don’t know what they’re talking about or are intentionally misleading the latter of which I doubt they’re meaning to do as likely they’re just overly eager .... but highly inaccurate FYI.
    As such I’d strongly encourage you to move on this is terrible advice terrible unprofessional amateurs making comparisons they have clearly no knowledge of or about. Clearly. That’s a fact not opinion which any audio engineer 101 will quickly tell you.

    The Neumann was a lot better sounding, especially in the voiceover test. The WA-87 sounded a lot darker and kind of muddy, but the U87 had a pretty balanced sound with enough brightness to not sound unnatural.

    • @goldenstringsstudio3636
      @goldenstringsstudio3636 6 лет назад

      Yes the same observation and I liked your comment on this point. Actually the U87 feels abnormal sound processor too much. W87 feels quieter, warmer and more clean. The difference is small

    • @johnjackson8902
      @johnjackson8902 6 лет назад

      Tunes tree The brightness and mid boost is what makes the U87 desirable. If I had the cash to drop on a U87 I'd pick it over the WA-87, but if I had to pick between the TLM 103 or TLM 102 and WA-87 I'd pick the Warm anyday.

    First off, the U87 is not considered a broadcast microphone. Most broadcasters use dynamic microphones such as the EV RE20, SHURE SM7B, SENNHEISER MD41. Now the U87 is world renown in the recording studio on vocals with countless platinum and Grammy's in the list of credits. If you don't know this information you have no credibility making this video...
