Rig Rundown - Intervals' Aaron Marshall

- After the dissolution of his previous band, Speak of the Devil, Aaron Marshall forged out on his own and created Intervals in 2011. (Through the band’s existence, Marshall has remained the sole constant member and is the band’s musical pilot.)
The instrumental band is like a robust jambalaya. It uses ingredients from prog, metal, djent, jazz, and even top-40 pop to make its own cosmic stew. After two instrumental EPs-The Space Between (2011) In Time (2012)-he recruited vocalist Mike Semesky and released their 2014 full-length debut, A Voice Within. Aaron Marshall decided the best version of Intervals was that eschewing vocals and moved on to release two more LPs in 2015 (The Shape of Colour) and 2017 (The Way Forward). Each release has seen Marshall (and the culminating tours with various bandmates) push further through the prog glass-ceiling with a no-holds-barred approach redefining themselves, and the resulting genre.
During the band’s run opening for co-headliners Chon and Between the Buried and Me at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works, Intervals ringleader Aaron Marshall spoke with PG’s Perry Bean. The Canadian details his new custom builds from Mayones, talks about the power and freedom the Axe-Fx III gives his band, and even explains how NYSYNC, TLC, and Destiny’s Child still influence him today.

Aaron is that dude who studies the material before the lecture and has the assignments done the night it was given. Such a pro, you gotta admire it.
Aaron is very knowledgeable and presentable on his gear and process. Great enthusiasm from the interviewer. Saw Intervals in Winnipeg a few years back when they came with Plini and Animals as Leaders, best concert of all time. Seeing and listening to 3 progressive masters is a once in a lifetime event, hope to see local Sam Jacobs play along next time!
Laszlo S. does no toan
Most professional rig rundown ever. This guy knows wtf is up
He certainly knows his shit.
@@MFKR696 I believe he worked at Steve's Music store in Toronto
Besides his talent in music, Aaron is incredibly sharp. He is a very good communicator and knows his stuff very well.
he can be super pretentious though
SUCH a good communicator
@@soppa112 ehhh......I dont buy into that
He's a experienced business man. Not many people realize that. Edit: That's why some people (like the dude in the other comment) could find his attitude "pretentious"
@@soppa112 I get that feeling too
Aaron knows so much about the entire setup, he really is goals
These guys are setting the bar so high. Maybe this is what you get when musicians aren't on drugs.
Nahh! Slash was on drugs dude....drugs got nothing on musicalilty
@@vn_1 lmao what you just said is the best proof that they actually do
@@ciaochrystusa4778 nahh! Im just 23 and have been sober my whole life.
Aaron is master in his craft no doubt. But grest legends were drug addicts at their prime so no judging just accept the music okay?
@@vn_1 honesly i can agree a little. back in 2010 or maybe even ealier when animals as leaders was just getting poplular i smoked with javier and tosin and navien. They were all weed smokers and they put on a hell of a show. Of course they waited till their set was done, but that just weed. Slash was way worse and musicians in his category but still iconic rock idols. ive met Aaron in charleston at a contortionist show and in reality hes just really smart and a geek. he coukd be on drugs all day and still explain everything the way he dis now.
@@ooferrell wierd flex but ok
Damn's he's not stingy on gear information and tips. Love Intervals, thanks PG
Theres chon rundowns of what they use where its mostly "ummm....yeah I like ibanez."
Then theres Aaron who will describe everything thoroughly and with passion.
These "Rig Rundown" videos are one of my favorite on RUclips. So interesting, even seeing the bands or players I don't listen to
Alot more bands and artists that I dont know...but it's a real treat to see someone I love
Agreed 100%
Best rig rundown ever. Aaron's knowledge on his stuff is absurd.
Guitar nerd Rundowns are always the best. This is up there with JB's one.
which was that one? i feel like i should know the name but can't remember it
@@raulperez2308 Joe Bonamassa
You know that "Masterclass" site?...where celebrities teach stuff? Aaron needs to do an Axe-FX "Masterclass" course.
rmp5s that would be pretty nice! We need those kind of masterclasses hahah
Aaron actually has a master class through JamPlay. He also does an annual musicians retreat in upstate New York at the end of each summer the last couple years.

I love when he is running down the bass and he says "Apart from the specs I just ran down, I am not going to pretend like I know anything more about this guitar". Its rare to see someone not only know when they don't know, but to openly admit they don't know as to not create any misinformation. Much Respect to Aaron.
There is something magical and satisfying about his songwriting. Not a tune of Intervals I dislike. Not a single one!
:D
Izzy1782 - same here
😎👍🇵🇱🎸Mayones...
The Pride of Poland!
Cheers!
I thought Chopin was the pride of poland? 🤔
The pride of Poland is polish mindset and resistance to influence, not some flipping guitar shop.
@@malakispanien the guitar master craftsmen (not shop) are an amazing representation of what Poland stands for
I just wanna sit down with this guy and have a beer. He just really seems like a genuinely nice person..
Can confirm, took a lesson from him a few years back before a show. Just as knowledgeable as he seems here and the absolute nicest dude, went like half an hour overtime on the lesson to answer questions and discuss techniques etc.
Saw intervals live last month. They we’re unreal, one of the best live shows I’ve ever heard. Aaron is incredible, just a true artist.
All them prog guitarists, are really good people as well. I love the attitude.
THIS IS A RIG RUNDOWN. PERFECT. I WAS AT THE SHOW IN INDIA
Best half hour of my life spent on youtube, thanks PG!
Good lord he is on top of his stuff. Normally I feel like I can keep up with all that, but it put me over the edge when he talked about piping a room mic mix into his in-ears to fill out the sound. Too fuckin' cool.
Really love your RR's and Perry is so passionate about gear it gives the whole thing a cool touch.
Would have liked to see the full rig , especially Jacob's gear. Keep up the good work 👌
He's gone through a few guitar companies and he's able to get anyone wanting to buy each one.
Facts
My band had the pleasure of opening for Aaron/Intervals when they were in our home town. I didn't want to pester him, but we had a brief chat and he was open and super nice. Unreal player live, and his band on that tour were also unreal. Jacob Umansky on bass was also extremely impressive.
That is the sickest bass I've seen in a LONG time.
Massive fan of Aaron, met him before Intervals got big summer of 2011 when I was in Toronto visiting family and was checking out some guitar stores. Super down to earth, great player, great person. Hope to catch you at one of your shows in the UK next time you're over here!!!
PS: this set up is dope, and Mayones really do make some outstanding instruments!!!
Don’t know why I’m a drummer but can enjoy this so much
Fun fact: aaron is a drummer too
cuz its all music baby! :D
met aaron after a chon show in detroit, nicest guy I have ever met. I was fanboying hard and stopped him to say great set and he shook my hand and talked for a quick sec, such a genuine dude
30 minutes with aaron hell yes thank you for this 🤘
if aaron marshall ever stops making music i hope he starts a music school. the dude's enthusiasm is so infectious i love it.
Great interview, good job PG!
I normally don't like green guitars but this Mayones is amazing (@_@) #StillMissRebeccaDirks
Aaron has been through so many guitar brands.
Yeea, it's a bit absurd
lol I wonder how this will last, before or after the next album
Anyone know why exactly he left Suhr?
I'm a bass player currently taking lessons from Jacob Umansky, when I saw his bass featured I died. I die every time no matter what. Literally the most mind blowing instrument I've ever seen.
Never heard of this guy or this band before but I'm a fan now just from hearing Aaron speak about his equipment. He's so intelligent and detailed. I'll be listening and getting acquainted.
Hes is one of my biggest influences as a guitarist. Intervals has had a huge impact on my playing style
Aaron's public speaking skills and knowledge of gear are the things I aspire to have
I love it when people who want to interview Aaron actually give him plenty of time to talk. He talks a lot and it's well worth hearing. I don't understand when people want to have a thorough informative interview with him and want it to be a short interview. That's not gonna happen. Those interviews always seem too short and Aaron sounds rushed. Thank you for actually wanting to hear what he has to say.
Aaron is so knowledgable about everything man, I'd love to spend a day with him and just pick his brain about all aspects of playing. This is one of the best Rig Rundowns I've seen
"I just tell them I'm in Matchbox 20 or Switchfoot." I lost it! 🤣🤣🤣 So funny.
Aaron puts most guitarists to shame in terms of knowledge of every aspect of his rig. Every detail is meticulously chosen. Intervals is so damn good, too. Well done, PG.
FR though, Belvedere is such an awesome jam.
Blown away at how knowledgeable he is and how he’s able to conjure it up instantaneously. I love musicians who are more than what they play.
Did I miss hear that? Did he say "born in '89"? So Aaron and Nick Johnston are around the same age. They're young and especially for how long they've been touring and being professional musicians.
Aaron Marsall is like 40 y.o. according to the internet. Johnston is 33 y.o.
Ambient room mics in his in ears ....... what a clever Trevor.
I like how intelligent and articulate he is in his speaking and info he provides.
If Aaron has taught me one thing, its to always have conviction. Major respect!
That's a musician who knows his set up and gave the info we all want to hear
Aaron is a class act and a phenomenal musician.
At least it wasn't that Rig Rundown when the guitarists just plays the guitar and knows zero about it (other than brand, model, strings, etc.).
Yeah but I feel like if I ask a question he might give me more than I need. Too gay for gear for me.
God Damn, Aaron is SOOOOOO smart and good at explaining!!! Just one more reason I love the guy
Love everything about this. Again, sometimes less is more.... I do play drop and standard tuning but I’m also a firm believer that lower notes don’t always mean heavier. Find what works for the songs sake and when it should be called for.
Between his guitar shop work at steve's music, running a super esoteric band (Speak of the Devil), and teaching an array of musicians throughout Toronto, Aaron has been a benchmark of knowledge. This is nothing but exciting to see his progress and how far he really has come. He is so amazing at the guitar in itself as an art, but a wonderful human. So humble and content on spreading knowledge and really driving the future of guitar. This has been a real pleasure to watch.
Best quality rundown yet (audio/video/editing). Great start to the new decade! Hope PG can catch White Denim sometime!
He plays 9's this changes everything
Playing 9s in standard tuning isn't exactly out of the ordinary, especially among shredders. The fact that he's using 9s changes nothing.
9-46 is more balanced bottom to top than 10-46
@@glenn1975 Indeed. Far as I'm concerned, 10s belong with a 48-52 bottom. That's pretty much the only way you're gonna get a balanced set of 10s. As for me, though. I'm not a shredder, so I tend to use 10-52 for standard tuning/drop-D. When there isn't a shit-load of tension on the strings, it just doesn't satisfy my gorilla-hands lol.
Perry u’re the man!!! Keep up the great work! Passionate I can actually feel it... Great rundown 🤘
If you ever get your hands on a neck-thru custom regius, you will never put it down.
Gotoh made a 510 trem for Angel Vivaldi’s Charvel. Not sure if it’s available to the public. Although it’s not like if Aaron asked they would tell him to hit the bricks
1:42 I thought he was going to say "That are known for extremely expensive builds" 😅😂
Such a cool dude, good interview, sexi asf guitars!!!
He really knows so much about the ins and outs of his rig and shows. Really impressed!
Mayones guitars are amazing. Some of the highest quality guitars I've tried.
Aaron is the type of guy to train Tony fergusons brain via prog talk
Aaron, you are an inspiration; that passion, the tone, and the drive, man - I love it. Thanks for making the video happen!
32:09 "these sweet mayonnaise guitars"
Does he run a separate eq block for the signal going to the Mesa cabs? Or is it the same as what he sends to FOH?
probably best rig rundown ever.
Always love Perry's energy and genuine excitement.
A bit too much tbh. Even Aaron seemed to notice it. Maybe hes just a huge fan. I'd act that way too lolu
Does anyone know the name of the song they're jamming in the intro?
what's the music on the intro?
Its, Impulsively responsible 🤘
So mayonnaise is actually an instrument
I'm super late to the party here. but wow. Aaron absolutely knows EVERYTHING that's going on in his guitars.
amazing rig rundown. dayum.
What a nerd... I love this.
Look wise, i think his sigbature guitars would look awesome with black coloured pickups.....sexy af
Holy crap. I watched this video hoping for some pedals. Ended up seeing freakin servers bigger that my IT firm's!!!!
68 gauge is savage kinda.. Using 64 for my 27 inch multiscale. For drop G that is.
Less talk please.
Bi polar?
He is incredibly knowledgable about his set up. Inspiring
Jesus, musicians today are so spoiled. 32 channels of stereo in ear monitoring? Laptops powering “scenes”? I mean, cmon. Maybe they should focus on performance and stage presence
Nerd alert
what is that song called at 7:50?
That's 'Touch And Go' off of The Way Forward. It's the first track. 👍🏼
What's the song at 0:17?
28 years ago we were going out with MIDI files programmed from Cubase on an Atari (remember them? :O) being played back on rack synths by a Roland MC-50, which also controlled the patch changes for the keyboard/vocalist, and also my Boss ME-5, so I could be anywhere on the stage and my "Solo" tone would kick in without me having to run back to base. It's actually a REALLY relaxing way to gig, knowing for sure that you will have the right tone, at the right time. Ahhh... those were the days... um, hang on, apparently THESE are the days too! :O)
Karnivool and Intervals what an insanely amazing concert that would’ve been
✌🏽 ✌🏽 ✌🏽 What’s up Perry
I saw you live at NH 7 it was hack of fun Aaron's music is simply amazing i hope they come back soon to INDIA for another live gig 🤘🤘🤘🤘
This was probably the best rig rundown video I've watched. Kudos!
Aaron is so talented, but you can tell how much hard work has gone into his playing. He makes everything look so easy. Maximum efficiency. Such a bright guy, too. The fact he does this in standard tuning is unreal.
Really cool interview
One of my favourites rig rundown ever. Now I know why I thought Plini and Aaron are the best guitar players at the moment. Also Perry so good on questions as always.
3:41 when he talks about India...fills my heart with pride 🇮🇳
Why? Proud because you happen to be born in India? And Intervals happened to perform there? I d9nt get it. Did you win some contest so that they would perform there?
@@Knosferatu He actually says there is a huge metal scene in India, so I guess any Indian person that likes metal could be proud of that. What I don't really get is why you came up with that question, to be fair with you! Chill mate
They are like the Special Ops of bands, practicality exuded all around. Including the Carhartt attire which I do as well.
Thanks for uploading this, I can watch this all day. Aaron really knows what he's talking about.
I want one of those Schaller bridges on my 7. Looks super comfortable.
This is the best Rig Rundown I’ve ever seen holy crap! He knows his shit I’m impressed
Me thinking, Wow, Perry is letting them talk for once. Then 11:38 happens........
So TLC is an influence of his, no wonder Belvedere kinda sounds like No Scrubs lol
