Please give me like a 2-3 hour podcast as it were and I'll die happy. Thank you Rick and Aaron!
Played in a prog metal band back in 2012 and all of our patch changes were midi controlled. Had a POD HD pro, and a axe-fxII, and all of the patch changes and mutes were fully automated to match the drummer's click and backing tracks.
@@stephenfrancis303 it doesn't really affect the sound. You basically have to play the same set every time, but you no longer have to worry about patch changes or muting for tuning. It made us as a band INCREDIBLY tight, but it didn't make anything seem too polished.
@@stephenfrancis303 oh yeah, that only really affects automating patch changes and keeping the band synced up with the tracks and patch changes through the drummer who's on a click track. All of the guitars are still played by people and the modelers were amplified through analog gear.

Such a great player - your interviews have reached a new level this year, Rick! The only comment I would have is that it is also sometimes good to explore the old ways of playing guitar and older sounds - best example I can think of is Brian Setzer's mining of rockabilly guitar... ultimately mastering and reinventing it. Sometimes the future path can be a reimagining of the past, and too often people have a "been there done that" attitude on playing methods that they've barely explored.
I love this video. I can't even fathom the amount of working hours and creativity that has gone into tinkering with all this sound. Truly appreciate how big of a nerd Aaron is :)
I'm so glad he brought the Hologram microcosm to show Rick. It's one of the coolest pedals out there right now. Man the sounds you can make with that and a chase bliss mood and blooper are crazy.
Interesting to see the change to Schecter but understandable. They make amazing, amazing guitars. The Nick Johnston sig is beautiful visually and audibly.
This was a great interview! I love that there are guitar geeks like this guy and push what the instrument can do. After so many years and there's still so much to discover.

Seriously one of my all-time favorite musicians. When I heard "The Shape of Colour" (ht Fluff!!), my mind was blown. Like, "Fable"? That sax solo? Ho-lee...friggin amazing.
I'm not a guitarist (piano, drums here), so 99% of this just flew past me, but man that guitar just looks amazing! Hey Rick, when are you going to cover some post-rock in your "what makes this song great" series? Like Sigur Ros's Saeglopur (the entire range of emotion induction in a single song), etc.
Basswood is the same as Linden. Crap . You can dent it with your fingernail. It's cheap and easy to carve. It is also the most dead tonewood. Don't judge the girl by the makeup, but by how she looks in the morning, or what's between the ears
A drummer here too. What a treat to hear all that information and feel all that passion that is Aaron. Pure inspiration! So great to see a guy so focused and on top of every note and sound that he creates. He is always striving towards perfection. Great job Rick, excellent interview.!! This one gives me hope for the future of music.
@@thesuncollective1475Same! But "dime bag stuff", "dive bombing", etc?!? Too much jargon, slang & cliches spoken so quickly that it came across as a sad attempt to appear hyper-cool. Salesman talk. Strange to see on Rick's terrific & very worthwhile channel.
I really appreciate all of your videos, from what makes this song great, to the all the interviews... But videos like these are just as amazing when it comes to a gearhead like me. Keep up the amazing work and merry Christmas, Rick 🎄🤘
I have to be honest, that's one of the best looking "Super Strat" guitars I've ever seen. The body proportions, horns, neck, and headstock - they all just look right to me.
Whether or not Aaron still uses the quad or not, it sounded dam good. It’s UI, it’s feel and sound beat the two big guys. The compactness and cool factor, the footswitches that do last thousands of times. They were tested by a machine. The fact that you can also turn them or put your finger on the screen to move the different knobs. The overall easy workflow. Takes a few minutes to get a great sound. Presets, scenes, stomp mode and now hybrid. Neural also has their own other list of their captures that will keep me busy for a long time. The plug in whiners are whining because they don’t want to actually buy the unit. They want to be tied to a computer and pay very little for their plug ins. Fine but stop badmouthing neural. Their customer service is great. Personally, Kemper was nowhere to be found when I needed help. Sorry but true. Then they added a secret Bluetooth to their least expensive model, the stage so u can use ur cell. Great. It’s an extra $100 bucks to set that rig manager mess up with a cell if you own the more expensive models. No thx. Sold. Helix is the same thing re feel and sound. Sold. If Aaron even used this for a year, it still means it was good. He probably needed more sounds. I don’t want 100’s of modulation fx. That’s just me and my opinion. He’s also known to switch brands a lot. But I only see the axe fx and the quad that have been with him. And amps I’m sure. Btw amps and pedals always come first but the quad comes next. Plug ins gojira x and plini x are in mine. Free if you signed up before a certain date. I had a back up so I have both plug ins. Wasn’t even planning on using them. They sound really great.
That guitar is soooo sweet. I play bass but I just found an amazing schecter Damaien in a pawn shop dirt cheap. Took my guy who is a guitarist to check it out and he told me to jump on it. I am now at 48 learning guitar!
I love this stuff. Even though I personally haven't a clue. He's like the car guru that speaks the high tech lingo that only other car gurus understand. He's a true guitar tech guru. His excitement over his tools is infectious.
As a HUUUUUUGE Quad Cortex / Neural DSP fan, this episode was a very entertaining and incredible watch! I love Ricks appreciation for gear and how despite being a massive tube amp fan (like myself) it’s nice to see an old schooler (also like myself) embrace and appreciate new technology and realize these are all just tools and optional roads to the same destination we all seek to arrive at as musicians! LOVE Aarons Schecter too!!! That color!!!! ❤️🤟
Man he’s such a talent, so enthusiastic. Intervals has been awesome since they dropped having vocals. I wish I caught them when they rolled through town.
Rick, You do incredible work! I would Love for you to do an in depth step by step video with Aaron on how he builds his midi tracks from scratch in Logic and uses all of the midi information, midi equipment and cable routing to change his effects and run the show of the whole band. I would pay for a Blu Ray on this!!!
First band I saw that did full midi for all instrument and lights was The Ocean, followed by Meshuggah, but damn, Aaron really is taking it to another level. Hope I get to catch this tour live! Fantastic and informative interview.
When does that make the music questionable? I know The Edge was praised more for sonics than musicianship. At the end though, if you achieve the sound you want, good for you. We are all chasing tones. Edit: That's what some critics say. I am just using the diss The Edge gets at times that bothers me. I don't know enough about production or Marshall's library to make a definitive opinion about it. I know it sounds wishy washy but I'm clarifying instead of deleting by explaining a question I have for myself as well as others.
@@teleguy5699 I’m not sure what you’re getting at. The band is still playing everything in this case (with maybe some synth backing tracks). All the changes and lights are controlled via automated MIDI messages, but all the playing is still Aaron et. al.
@@Kwert I hear you, and I'm not disputing that or saying he isn't playing. I was just using the analogy the one of my favorites, The Edge, gets criticized for. Sonics and tones compared to musicianship. I believe it's all part of the music. I've never even heard Marshall's music before and I was just noticing all the bells and whistles that a modern guitarist has at their disposal, but even Hendrix used effects.
@@teleguy5699 Yeah, I think it’s important to realize that in this case the gear is not masking “inadequacies” or anything like that in his playing. It just provides him a much larger sonic palette from which to create.

No reason for me to speak French. Took myself out and bought a guitar back home. Try being polite québécois. The french dumped you off yet you’re still loyal to them. They dumped you off. Dumped. Dumped. Get it. Dumped you off.
Ok second episode was amazing, here's my idea for the 3rd. Make it at least 5 times longer. I'd love to hear a multifaceted conversation between you two. Gear, life, touring, recording, successes, failures, pitfalls of the industry, lessons learned, favorite gear, favorite albums new and old. I could sit here all day.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! This is the BEST electric guitar nerd journey, and true application. The stuff of my dreams 25, 35 years ago, now a reality. I hope Aaron and Intervals decides to tour again soon.
The color on the Schecter is SICK!!!! Will be looking for it when it comes out.
Yes. I’m glad to see he didn’t go for those awful burl poplar tops or a 10-color burst
@@robroper8878 US slang for really good.
I've loved this band for like 10 years! Aaron is definitely a big influence of mine
Dear RIck, I just wanted to say that most of the time I do not understand what you talk about but I love watching your videos. You just connect to me. Thank you for sharing your knowladge and experience! Have a blessed day! Keep smiling
I had to go back a couple of times during the video to re-listen to some of the ambient stuff Aaron was playing, 'cause it was amazing.
Aaron should make a full ambient album, give Eno some competition 😉
Intervals not my cup of tea but this guy makes me realize how lazy of a musician I am. What a dedicated pro with such great art. The mix of virtuosity and technology is really cool.
Yeah, same here...
Yes, intervals can be boring, but sometimes they can sound catchy just like Gun's N' Roses' "Sweet Child of Mine"
@@mikepeligro I was referring to the laziness bit, not intervals!
@@mikepeligro I was talking about the band "Intervals".. the guy from the video is their guitarist...
@@robhand7205 That exchange was hilarious!
Hi Rick! I’m a newbie to your channel… love all your videos!!👍🏻❤️
Aaron is such a talent honestly. Love everything he's ever written.
I was at the Intervals show 3 days ago in Pittsburgh and it was amazing! Best show I’ve seen in years.
Honestly the cool factor of this channel is unprecedented. Every time I think it can't possibly get any better, you surpass yourself. I'm a fan for life.
Watched the show in NYC last night, the guitars and the entire band sounded amazing.
Such a wonderful person and amazing composer/player. Met Aaron here in Madrid, Spain last time Intervals played here and was really kind to all fans waiting to meet him. It's great to see someone using these devices to create music instead of spending countless hours in the web debating whether they are suitable/usable/good enough!
I've been playing since the 60's and this stuff is WAY too much for my little, old brain!
You younger people are so lucky to have all this tech now.
I'd rather hear more musicality from Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana than any of this gear. It's the artist, not the gear.
@@mikepeligro lame comment... the musicality that Aaron has is very near their level, if not the same. You probably just dont like it
@@mikepeligro I rather hear both. If Eric or Jimi were born in this decade, they would be using this kind of gear for sure.
@@mikepeligro and more boomer bends, gotta love boomer bends on that first pentatonic
@@valebliz boomer is such an

Not a boomer. I think I’ve talked to you before. You will one day be a boomer. Soon to be boomer. Time flies. Jerk
I love how Aaron forgets to breath when he's talking about gear. Legendary guy!
When they talk about concert image, I remember the U2 360 tour had the best sounding system I've ever heard. Amazing. Loud and clear. I was impressed. Been to many many shows in my life going back to the 70's.
This guy is awesome! Such focus and dedication to the craft of music making! Look forward to seeing him live; bravo!!👏🏻
One of my favorite guitarist in modern playing and style. So good. 🤘🏾
This conversation was so inspiring and entertaining. You could do a series called "Rick Rundown" and do this format with a bunch of other artist.
Great work video as always!
I don’t know when Aaron finds time to play guitar. Such an enthusiastic techy
We caught this show in Austin. Seeing Tom jump in the song was MINDBLOWING! There was so much talent under the roof that night
I have a Phd.
I have a modelling amp.
I have no idea what you guys are talking about.
Huh, that’s odd. I figured you having a Phd would have unlocked all of the knowledge in the universe…
@@user-te3qq1rb7u Clearly you misfigured.
As they say... PhDs know everything about nothing
Awesome!! I'm a prog metal nerd too and I play thru a v30 and creamback together! Love it for getting more clarity out of the 7 string without losing any 'punch'
Aaron sounds really really clever and a cool human being at the same time.
Aaron Marshall and intervals deserves more fans, so undervalued band and his music is incredible ❤️
Rick just looks so happy sitting down with Aaron . It makes me happy
Nice to see a musician who is dialed in to every facet of his sound and music production.
Been a long time fan of intervals, awesome to hear Aaron talk about his setup and how he takes advantage of tech.
Interesting to see the change to Schecter but understandable. They make amazing, amazing guitars. The Nick Johnston sig is beautiful visually and audibly.
Aaron is next level , I enjoy listing to his knowledge , great video Rick !!!!
This was a great interview! I love that there are guitar geeks like this guy and push what the instrument can do. After so many years and there's still so much to discover.
I love geeking on gear but if he just takes a breath. Just a breath.
Aaron is such a great player and i love his attention to detail to creating a production and always wanting to give his audience the best listening experience ever! great interview.
THAT was one of the most informative Videos ever Rick
I Didn't know Aeron Marshall but now I have a Tremondous amount of respect for him
I thank you both So much I've learned a lot 🙏🏻
Love the color on that guitar. That metallic teal color really does it for me.
Aaron is such an inspiration to me. Looking forward to seeing Intervals in the UK again sometime soon 👌🏻
Thx much Rick to present us this crazy+amazing musician! Love when the attention to so many details is put in.
Always a pleasure to see Aaron !
Seriously one of my all-time favorite musicians. When I heard "The Shape of Colour" (ht Fluff!!), my mind was blown. Like, "Fable"? That sax solo? Ho-lee...friggin amazing.
This interview makes me want to go plug my guitar straight into my amp.
I am a guitarist ..I couldn't follow either but sounds useful
@@BermondseySteve I think the guy was being completely genuine in his excitement over what he's doing. It's nice to see.
I really appreciate all of your videos, from what makes this song great, to the all the interviews... But videos like these are just as amazing when it comes to a gearhead like me. Keep up the amazing work and merry Christmas, Rick 🎄🤘
Way more geeked out for me to comprehend all of it, but so mind expansive and appreciate the video. 👏
I have to be honest, that's one of the best looking "Super Strat" guitars I've ever seen. The body proportions, horns, neck, and headstock - they all just look right to me.
It is pretty and I'm not usually into those styles.
I love this content Rick! Aaron is one of my hero's! It is so cool seeing him nerd out on this stuff!
Their customer
service is great.
He does still use the Quad Cortex

Scarborough boy! Went to Wexford high school with Aaron. Glad to see you made it buddy 👊
So happy to see Aaron again in your channel
That guitar is soooo sweet. I play bass but I just found an amazing schecter Damaien in a pawn shop dirt cheap. Took my guy who is a guitarist to check it out and he told me to jump on it. I am now at 48 learning guitar!
22:46 really love the tone
"Hot amp hot fuzz never go wrong"
Didnt understand. But his passion for his setup is amazing. He programmed that out himself. Awesome. Love this video Rick.
Aaron thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I could listen to you guys all day.
I love this stuff. Even though I personally haven't a clue. He's like the car guru that speaks the high tech lingo that only other car gurus understand. He's a true guitar tech guru. His excitement over his tools is infectious.
He reminds me of Dallas Schoo, who is The Edge's tech
Daym! This makes me want to go see Intervals live so badly!
Love Aaron. Went to see him finally a few days ago and it was the best show I’ve ever been to. Underrated.
He's under appreciated, not under rated. Anyone who plays guitar knows Aaron rips, so he's rated quiet fairly.
Great video Rick, It was a pleasure getting an in-depth analysis of what goes on behind the scenes in a modern performance!
I love how excited this guy is about their setup👍
As a HUUUUUUGE Quad Cortex / Neural DSP fan, this episode was a very entertaining and incredible watch! I love Ricks appreciation for gear and how despite being a massive tube amp fan (like myself) it’s nice to see an old schooler (also like myself) embrace and appreciate new technology and realize these are all just tools and optional roads to the same destination we all seek to arrive at as musicians! LOVE Aarons Schecter too!!! That color!!!! ❤️🤟
what a talent, proud to be from Toronto because of Aaron. fucking hell dude
been waiting for this duo again!~
im actually happy he went to schecter, no way i was going to afford a mayones sig XD
Man he’s such a talent, so enthusiastic. Intervals has been awesome since they dropped having vocals. I wish I caught them when they rolled through town.
Just makin' stuff up, and it's breathtaking. What a talented musician, and he's so in love with everything guitar.
I remember seeing Aaron in Ottawa at Maverick bar during his A voice within tour. I can't believe he's there sitting with Rick Beato, so cool.
@@teleguy5699 ?
It just provides him a much larger sonic palette from which to create.
...in all this discussion of things electronic, the first switch flipped would be on the espresso machine ... I did not detect an "OFF" switch on Aaron.
I always love hearing him talk about his approach! I was lucky enough to see them in Chicago in November as my first concert! The last show before he switched over to that Schecter. Also you should get Tom from Thank You Scientist in there some day! It would be awesome to hear about his approach!
be intersting to see Neural DSP do a plug in with Rick. I'd imagine you'd get a base tone for every style of music in it, would be a great all rounder for anyone thats into recording all styles
