Rig Rundown: Thrice [2021]

- Recently @ThriceOfficial’s Dustin Kensrue (vocals/guitar) and Teppei Teranishi (guitar) participated in PG’s Hooked. (The video series features musicians talking about a moment, riff, or song that turned their world upside down and sideswiped them into playing.) Kensrue raved about the Pixies’ dissonant melodies, while Teranishi highlighted Metallica’s heavy impact. And at the conclusion of the video, they both admit the band has a lot of “Pixies” parts and “Metallica” moments throughout its catalog.
Over the course of 11 studio albums-with the help of brothers Eddie (bass) and Riley (drums) Breckenridge-Thrice has explored odd-timing metal (Identity Crisis and The Illusion of Safety), thrashy screamo (The Artist in the Ambulance), maturing post-hardcore (Vheissu and Palms), all-encompassing prog-rock with ethereal escapes and mammoth, surly riffs (The Alchemy Index: Vols. I-IV), and an amalgamation of it all (To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere and Horizons/East). And even after all those years, all those albums, and all their discovered sounds, the Pixies and Metallica continue to be musical planets they orbit while exploring the outer realms of the sonic solar system.
Prior to headlining Nashville’s Mercy Lounge in support of the just-released Horizons/East, Kensrue and Teranishi spoke with PG’s Perry Bean about the changes (and reductions) in their symbiotic setups. Kensrue explains why he’s shifted his live tone (and Horizons/East recordings) to be fully dependent on the Line 6 Helix, and how that impacted the design of his signature Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay. Teranishi chronicles how the pandemic-created time void sent him down the lutherie rabbit hole and resulted in a familiar-looking-but-original build.

Definitely need to do the rig rundown for bassists too. Eddie makes his own basses and effect pedals so I wonder if he helped Teppei out with his new guitar. Eddie's tone makes me want to build my own Grabber style bass with Lollar pickups.

True they did the same with Rise Against always skipping the bass
it’s not that they skip the bassist ( maybe they do ) but if an artist doesn’t want to do a rig rundown, they’re not forced to. Also time constraints, since most of these are done before the band plays. That said, i would’ve loved to gave seen Eddie’s rig
I feel Rig Rundowns feature the bassist about a third of the time. They aren’t being overlooked on purpose. It’s up to the individual musician if they want to be featured. (I imagine the bigger the band/artist, the more PG would like to have everyone featured if they are interested in doing it.)
Most basses p, j or Gibson style in this case into ampeg svt stack but will total agree I wanna see it …
I've been playing with modellers for years and him splitting his pickups on a stereo cable and controlling what pickup is on and how much it is on might be the most mindblowing thing I've never thought of... That's so rad
That’s such a cool twist on the digital amp world-what a rad set-up, and without needing midi built into the guitar…so sick
Steve Von Till from Neurosis does a similar thing with his Warmoth partscasters, using a stereo cable and making his pickup selection in a Bob Bradshaw system
I love Dustin and his Rig and everything, but the usage of modelling that blew my mind completely is by Stevic of Twelve foot ninja! There are videos where he describes how he uses the Helix with his signature Variax! It's incredible!

The stereo cable and Helix control over the pickup output is an incredibly cool idea. When the signature came out I did not understand the stereo out and switch thing, I totally get it now.

Dustin is the reason that I originally bought a Line 6 POD HD500x. And then when TBEITBN was released and saw the Helix being used live, I went and bought one. I have since switched to the Quad Cortex, but the Helix is still great despite being almost 7 years old now. I still have my HD500x in the cupboard and it still works and sounds great.
What do you think of the Quad Cortex? I like the format of it, seems like it would be a bit more user friendly than the Fractal Axe FX. I have the Fractal now but the interface is just too much menu diving for my liking.
They are just so beautiful and nice people to listen to, thrice is something whole different in the 'nowadays' music industry♥️
thrice has been my favorite band since 2001. incredibly talented group, i cant stress that enough
20 years and they’ve kept the same lineup the whole time. And that’s not including the time they’ve known each other as kids. It’s pretty special.

One of my favorite band sounds so awesome every time. I fell in love with them by finding vheissu and that opened me up to their to their stuff. It’s one of those rare perfect albums but they have many great ones !!

Dustin's so interesting. Gibson to Telecaster modded with Line 6, to Nash Tele, now to Ernie Ball Music man.
This was a great rig rundown. I sold all my "Named" guitars a while back after building my first guitar. It's addicting. I now have 9 guitars I built to my taste. With 3 more in production. I also have switched to Helix 2 years now as my preamps into my tube heads as a mono wet/dry into cabs with all the effects as well.

I think Eddie uses a Gibson Grabber II with an Ampeg B15 and a Marshall JMP MK-1 Super Bass??
His main bass (the brown one) he made from a Grabber that got damaged in shipping. He made another one (the blonde) with Lollar precision 90 pickups. Grabber pickups are impossible to find, no one knows how to make them, and Gibson won't share how to make them or make them available for purchase. Eddie said the Lollars are the closest he's found but they're a bit hotter. Not sure what he's running for pedals or amps right now. Him and Riley killed it on the new album though. Great drumming and bass throughout. Hoping they continue to deliver on Horizons/West and we get that followup sooner rather than later.

It bothers me to no end that they rarely do the bassists rigs as well.
To PG's credit there are a lot of bassists who are just playing the root notes of the chord progression to fill the tonal spectrum and keep rhythm; however, to your credit, there are so many bassists' who play a significant role in the band's overall sound (often adding more to the dynamics of the band than the guitar players do) and they definitely need recognition.
To add to that, it’s also called premier guitar, not premier bass …
You can get rid of the delay if you turn on "preset spillover" but it cuts your available DSP in half.
Perry does a great job with these rundowns, he asks really good questions
Perry is so confused (at 6:45) that there's only a Helix Floor and powered cabs for Dustin's setup. 🙃
I was hoping to hear that guitar he made . Iv thought about making my own many times . Cnc routers aren’t that expensive I just didn’t quite know how to work the software to make an sg . But for cheap you can buy the necessary machines and make a fleet of guitars for way cheaper than buying multiple guitars from name brands.
Please do a rig rundown of DIIV’s Andrew Bailey!! His shoegazy/grungy distortion tones are so thick and powerful but yet, so soothing and rich.
So for Horizons/East, his guitar was just directly into the interface? The guitars sound so good and crisp!

That stereo cable to get different pickups is such a good idea. Amazing.
Even if you don't use the bar, having it there does very subtly change the resonance of the guitar. It's kind of like a chambered effect, but not exactly. You can always just block it off if you don't use it anyway.

Off topic, but I hope guitar-driven music makes a comeback (in the mainstream); there's no better feeling than plugging into a hot rig, and playin' in front of a crowd.

go listen to “The Alchemy Index” from 2007, then check out the new record “Horizons/East”. their two masterpieces.
Interesting what he mentions about tuners around the 14:15 mark. Back in the day, as a drummer, I was the band leader and I would ask my bandmates to all tune to the same tuner.
Stereo out is a game changer. I wish the guys had actually demoed some sounds though.

The word Mustang is never used to describe that guitar. Is it just me that sees the similarities? Even the metal plate where the knob sits, that's iconic to the Mustang. If the pickups were slightly angled, it would be identical. Close at least...

6:51 I've had an HX FX for 6 months now and still can't figure out how to properly program it. I don't know if I'm too stupid or too lazy to figure out all the subtle capabilities.
I’ve had one for close to a year and I’ve probably figured out 15% of its capabilities, keep trying and watch a ton of videos it helped me so much

Dang, going to take a while to get used to Teppei not on that iconic Nash. As a tube and axe fx owner. Cool to see them switching to digital. Cant beat the simplicity.
Nothing will ever beat a class A tubed amp. I don't care how good the technology is. Seems like Thrice are just using them out of ease for set-up when touring as everything is pre-set.

I wish there were more color options for Dustin's signature. The Tabaco Burst isn't terrible, but the TV Yellow or w/e it is, is bleh, specially for a $3k guitar. A Grey would be nice.

Those are pretty basic skills, just need the proper tools. Sanding is all about patience and elbow grease. Making the pickup rings would be simple - route out the center on a larger piece of wood, then cut out the outside dimensions and sand to size/smoothness if needed.

Rundowns with modelers are so boring. Heres a custom shop signature model plugging into a processor, how original.
Fender is such an awesome company. Everyone who can tune a guitar gets their own signature model.

Not a good Rig Rundown at all..The cameraman was asleep or something...It was like an interview with these two players but no real clear shots of amps or pedals or anything..and a little bit of showing guitars....But all the other Rundowns are great.
