      I have this one because when I do the math the 3X on dining combined with the 1.5X on everything else happens to equal what I would get on a 2X for everything card. Then you think about combining that with a Sapphire card and for example on the Sapphire Preferred you are guaranteed a 1.87X return using the portal on those 1.5X purchases and potentially much more if you transfer those points to hotels or airlines.

    I think the fidelity 2% credit card is similar to the BOA one, in the sense that if you have enough assets with them, this card can give 2.25%, 2.5% and even 3% cash back on all purchases. Having said that the amount of funds you need with Fidelity is obnoxiously high.. way above the BOA requirements for their platinum rewards thingy. So can't imagine a lot of people would be able to qualify for the 3%.

    Honorable mentions: Discover It (first year at least) - 1% back but matched with 1% at end of year and bonus of the 5% rotating categories. Was just on Discover site as was curious what else they have. They have another card that earns 1.5% back that is matched making it effectively 3% on anything...labeled as their travel card but you can redeem for travel or for cash. Might pick it up. Also have a gas and restaurant card that gives 2% back on those categories only and 1% on everything else with 1st year match as well. $1k cap on gas/restaurant card but no cap on the travel card. Think I might be adding it to the stack at some point.

    I know this is an old video but a recent change to fidelity visa made it the best catch all in my mind. They now do not charge foreign transaction fee. Plus they have been giving a 10% bump to the cash back after you do a min spend for the quarter. The min spend changes quarterly. but i have had it as low as $500 to up to $2300. So, example, all spend after $500 for the quarter is bumped 10% above base cashback. There is a cap to it but I’ll take that anyday for a catch all. Especially if you spend a lot of time overseas. Double especially if you qualify for the higher 2.25 - 3% base cashback.

    I would add the Amex Hilton Surpass and Hilton Business and the Chase World of Hyatt as good catch all cards, too, provided your 'everything else' spend is $15,000 (no less, and maybe just a little more), because you get free night certificates at that $15,000 in annual spend. Depending on how the certificates are used, these can be the best return on spend cards for the 'everything else' category. As an example, if you redeem a Hilton certificate for a $750 night in a hotel, and that would be 5% R.O.S. plus the points you earn along the way.

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  Год назад

      That's a solid point! You can always use other cards than a dedicated catch-all card depending on your spending habits, so thanks for bringing that up. It has a $49 annual fee but comes with a free Global Entry/TSA Precheck membership for 1 person every 4 years, which is a value of $100. Year 1 comes with a free year of Amazon Prime which is valued at $139.00! I’ve actually been granted the free year of Prime twice. I got it in year 1 and then again this year which is my 3rd year with the card. Also the current welcome offer is $400 for spending $4000 in the first 90 days of owning the card.
    Also the Flagship earns 3% back on travel and 2% on everything else. The card has the potential to grow to a maximum credit limit of $80,000. Also Navy Federal is known for giving huge starting limits, in addition to soft pull credit limit increases of up to $8000 every 6 months. Makes it easy to grow your card(s) issued by them.

    I’ve got a few of these and use them at different times for different reasons. I have a AMEX and Chase quadfecta so I usually go with the BBP for the catch all card of choice but when their are Chase offers that I can use I’ll whip out the Freedom Unlimited. I use my Apple Card at times as well but oddly enough I use it more for the 1% when using the physical card since I tend to use it the most when I’m overseas since I don’t have a 2x or 2% card without a international fee.

    The best catch all combo imo is the blue business plus as a USA only catch all card and the alliant visa signature (2.5%) on all purchases for all places Amex isn’t accepted or when you’re abroad. I product changed my CFU to another CF flex. I don’t see what the point of the CFU is if you have the BBP, since they both have foreign transaction fees.

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  Год назад

      That'd be a dangerous setup for sure. I'd argue now that if you have a card like the VX that you can take overseas, that'd be more valuable that the Alliant visa signature depending on how you use the points, but for a no annual fee combo with some cash back mixed in, you bring up a good point. As for the PC to the CFF from the CFU, I like to have access to a catch-all card in both ecosystems since sometimes I want to accumulate more points with a specific lender, however, you're technically right. I don't need multiple CFFs personally, so having the CFU as my Chase catch-all card with no annual fee isn't hurting me.

    I’m already a little ways into credit cards with an IHG premier (I travel a decent amount for work), citi premier, CSP, and amazon prime card. How important do you think a catch all card is versus just looking for bonuses or keeper cards for specific travel? For example we’re going to Rome next year and the IHG card is gonna cover 8 nights at the crowne plaza just with the sign up bonus, but I still need to figure out the flights.

      Great question! I think it's always important to have a card you use for non-category spend unless you're literally always spending towards a SUB. Whenever I do so, I put ALL of my spend on that one card until I hit the bonus, but in between card applications it's always nice to have a card that'll give me elevated earnings on my misc spend. It all depends on your spending habits and goals in the credit card game, but that'd be my recommendation. It's more of a peace of mind thing.

    5. TD Double Up card since he’s had a TD bank account since I was a kid.

      Skip the TD. You don’t need so many basic cards. QS was my first with no history. Try pre approvals tools. Go for Chase Flex, QS or Discover IT. After that just prioritize an ecosystem and stick to it. Discover even has secured options too if you don’t qualify for normal ones. Easy to rebuild and graduate to better cards.

    • @docsays
      @docsays Год назад

      Assuming the TD card is a 2% card, I would replace that with the savor 1 for all the 3x categories, since the cap1 QS will be the catch all card

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  Год назад +1

      I tend to agree with the comments left below. I personally wouldn't have him get multiple catch-all cards in his first 5. If he's starting with the Cap1 Platinum, he could always product change that to the Quicksilver down the line rather than taking up another 5/24 slot for it. That could serve as his catch-all technically... Then the Discover it and CFF are great cards for those 5x categories and are solid recommendations. Then he'd only be at 3 cards rather than 5 and could either add more Chase cards under 5/24 or start to figure out his path more after that. Those are my initial thoughts at least.

    Personally, I have more of a "all or nothing" approach: either I get 10+ percent cashback on my purchase, or I don't care. This pretty much means the only "cashbacks" I care about are sign-up bonuses, since only they can get you into that range. I think if any of us do the math, it becomes clear that getting some 3-5 percent back really doesn't matter. The cashback only "matters" once you get into the 10+ range.

      I think that's fair, however, why not still go for extra earnings on all of your spend if you can? No matter what, spending towards a SUB is gonna provide the highest return, but I don't see why you wouldn't still optimize your spend outside of the times you're spending towards a bonus. Especially if you can turn that 2x back into 10x back with the right travel partners.

      @@SpencerJohnsonOfficial I agreed that "a penny saved is a penny earned" and there are merits in maximizing the cashbacks you can get. But personally, I just think that since most of these catch-all cards only offers around 2%/2X cashback when *most* credit cards already offer 1%/1X back, it just makes it not worth the effort (mostly hard inquiry and sacrificing 5/24). And besides, I don't really think you need a "catch-all" if you already have 2-3 cards that covers the 4-5 areas that I think makes up 80%+ of most people's spending: Amazon, Food & Groceries, and travels and rent. Which means just having an Amex Gold already eliminates the need for catch-all (in my eyes) since you've covered probably 50%+ of your spending.
