  • Hi my guitar friends, today I want to show you how I use headphones with my stereo pedals, with the help of a splitter cable!
    I red a lot of complains about the UAD Dream '65, Ruby and Woodrow '55 and many other pedals for being so expensive while don't having a simple headphone output, but the solution is really easy..

    ive done this on my uafx pedals, and the sound is good, the pedal output works fine a as a volume control for the headphones. the one thing you might encounter that i did is my pedalboad power supply is isolated, so there is no ground wire on the power supply. you hear more noise with this setup because the path to ground doesn't exist on its own, as its supposed to ground through the PA or whatever you are feeding the signal into. when i run the pedalboard into something like my helix that has a grounded supply and a headphone amp its totally quite. this took me a little digging to figure out, as the cioks supply is supposed to be extremely clean but i was getting lots of noise. I dont know why people think this is such a dealbreaker anyway, get a little mooer headphone amp and run the output in there if you want to monitor it and dont like this method

    Really!? This actually works fine? So that seems I could even just go straight out to my headphones that have a 1/4" jack too if I am ok doing just mono?

      Hi, I'm pretty sure in that case you would hear with just one ear, that's the issue.. Try with the splitter and it will work just fine! The only other issue could be the volume if you're used to very high volumes (and based on your headphones impedance - ohms), in that case you would need a headphone preamplifier

    This might sound like a dumb question, but if you are connecting both quarter inch connections to the Dream 65, where would you connect the patch cable for any other pedal you'd want to use with? Noob guy over here

    • @FabioGrando

      Ciao Natalie, you're question makes sense! You want to plug your earphones (with the "stereo cable device") in the last stereo pedal you plug after the "amp" (dream '65).
      Good post effects (reverbs, delays, modulations) should be stereo, you can plug as many as you want, on the last one you plug your headphones

      @@FabioGrando have a volume boost pedal on the board would that be okay u think? Also my sole purpose of trying to use headphone is to practice at home before sunday for quick run down and to set delays reverb and overall board tone.

      I can't assure you it will work at proper volumes, I'm not an expert and volume is very subjective.. you can try and then if it is too low consider buying a headphones preamp, it's not very expensive and a quite useful piece of gear

    • @FabioGrando

      My headphones (Philips Fidelio X2HR) are 30 Ohms and the volume is not high, I have to push the "master" knob on my pedal to make it "normal", but I'm used to low/medium volumes..
      Consider that higher Ohms means less volume and yours are 63 Ohms

    I think it is going to sounds horrible... I've tried, and return it, the opus unit, that has the headphone output, I've bought it to use my pedalboard in recording mode into my audio interface, but even to play it in stand alone mode using the appropriate headphone output, it is sounds really really bad... give us some feedback about what you are suggesting us! 🙂

      I can tell you that the UAFX Dream 65 sounds great with my Philips Fidelio (quite avarage 100€ headphones), also the Strimon Bluesky with my Godin does.. They sound just as usual, the only difference is they do that in your headphones 👍

      @@FabioGrando as soon as i can get the UAFX (they aren't cheap) i will! I have a volt 2 audio interface, unfortunately i have no monitors, so i need to use headphone (akg k371), and i use mainly mxr peral in my pedalboard, except for vox wha end ts8... with opus even the wha sounded bad... it was like connecting the pedals straight to the audio interface or straight to the headphone... 🙃

      @@rustymcaron5379 Ook i got it.. I can assure you that with UAFX and/or Strymon pedals the results will be good! I don't know this Opus you're talking about, but let me tell you: for "desktop" and production use you should consider using plugins.
      To buy a 400$ Dream 65 makes sense for several reasons (practice, jams, even gigs), but if you just play guitar at your desk with your soundcard you should consider plugins. The Tone King Imperial by Neural DSP is on black friday sale and it sounds amazing (also other plugins from Neural DSP do, it depends on what sound you need). Let me know your thoughts and if I'm missing something ✌

    • @FabioGrando
      @FabioGrando  5 месяцев назад

      Ok, then you should try to increase the the output (master volume) of the pedalboard or of one of the pedals at the end of the chain, if they allow you to.. if that doesn't work you might consider buying headphones with a lower impedance (more volume)

    That's not quite right, the result 'works'but gives a terrible user experience - I had a UA Dream 65 and after trying that cable with several different low impedance headphones it's really unsatisfactory - I went back to the Iridium with a dedicated headphone amp.

    • @FabioGrando
      @FabioGrando  7 месяцев назад +4

      I believe "a terrible user experience" is just wrong and unfair.
      I'm sorry you did not find the right headphones (or even headphones preamp if you're used to extreme volumes), this "technique" I'm showing works perfectly with an electroacoustic instrument to enjoy a nice reverb with the Strymon (e.g.) and also it's great with an electric guitar and the UAD '65, just pushing a little bit more the Output knob.
      I also love to enter (mono) in the Dream '65, connect it to the Strymon Bluesky (in stereo, so you can enjoy the Dream '65 Vibrato and Spring Reverb) and then plugging my headphones with the splitter in the Strymon's outputs for bigger and lush reverbs.
      It just works amazingly with my Philips Fidelio X2HR (30 Ohms impedance, which is quiet) so I really do not understand the matter here, they just are outputs and the quality of the sound they deliver is the same.
