I've only had this video recommended to me once, in the sidebar 9 hours after its release. It didn't even show up on the homepage. Evil pinely's "Wicked's Controversial Marketing Campaign" got on my homepage first.
you sound like a true masshole, not like a person from long island fyi (my mom is from long island and I live 40ish minutes from boston so im obviously the authority on this)
the reason this worked for barbie is because EVERYONE knows it and it was cute and unique. wicked feels more forced cause not everyones heard of it and its so in your face and half the products dont even make sense
Not to mention most of the marketing being carried by actual online hype, like the Barbenheimer phenomenon just bc people found it funny they were sharing an opening slot. If the message movie makers got from it is to just overmarket their movies to try and force a cultural moment it's gonna end up biting them in the ass.
@@cheeseeatingsurrendermonkeys as a theater kid, this much marketing makes me think this movies gonna be shit. 😭 You want a well done movie musical? Watch Chicago, In the Heights, or West Side Story. THOSE are actually sick. Dude they literally copied the red and yellow skit on SNL done after the dead pool wolverine movie and did it poorly. Like Glinda is suppose to be a little bit of a sassy mean girl and that already is uh not working based on that skit. Like why they so afraid to make them sassy? Sass is why the original skit was funny. It's so weird they market only the colors and not based on the characters??? My hopes are on the floor
It's been driving me crazy, there's a subreddit about Cosmo and Wanda-ing where we post times where we see pink and green together and I used to be good at it.... Now every two seconds I think I found one and its just a Wicked ad.
@@missbeaussie But it worked was the point. It really worked. You barely saw people complaining about it. All you saw was actual excitement. People drawing and taking photos of themselves to put in the scenes we had or the "This barbie is blank" thing, dressing up in pink and putting together solo or couple oufits for the premiere. This is going far past the point where you rile people up with excitement to where you rile them up with annoyance. I won't disagree that the movie was kind of a letdown, specially if you know basic feminism (and it TOLD feminism to you. it didn't really show you it well) but the marketing worked to make people like the movie. So far people seem to HATE Wicked because of the marketing alone. If your marketing makes people hate your movie, you did it wrong. Barbie at least understood that.
@@ohsarcasmplus it's an added bonus that none of the Barbie cast had contreverisies coming out about them throughout the marketing of the movie or while filming the movie you can't really say the same about the Wicked cast
I like to imagine the concept of the pink/green color scheme but on ANY other movie. “Our color scheme is character b’s favorite color and character a’s skin color.”
It would really be a lot less silly if they had done black for Elpheba, because she’s traditionally shown in black- one of the most famous costume pieces from the original musical is her big black gown!- but I guess marketing was like “no no no we have to make it green because. She’s green.” Suppose it was the other way, and Glinda was represented by beige, for her skin tone? I know I’m overthinking it, but I feel like it’s so funny if it went both ways. Buying my beige luxury car to show support for Glinda
The fact that Elphaba is green is very significant in the musical so it’s not surprising. I’m not even joking. Glinda being associated with pink makes sense but isn’t like, a key plot point lol
The last thing we need are more plastic products produced by underpaid workers that will end up in a landfill. The consumerism of the whole thing is offputting.
@@SilvrRazorFeatherAnd that no one will buy. Some products might be picked up, of course, but I’m not sure there’s enough fans who would want some plastic tat that has no soul to it.
they rebranded a bunch of major places in greenwich that had greenwich in the name, i have 0 doubt they offered the goverment money to rename the town before doing that
@@glooberofficialrenaming an entire university like that for the sake of an ADVERTISEMENT is the problem. not just to rename it for names sake, but to actively shove more ads towards you is dystopian.
@@glooberofficial Yes, it _is_ dystopian. It's rebranding for an advert. Not just for funsies. After all, the University of Greenwich was initially the Woolwich Polytechnic - it's changed names before and very may again in the future. If you think that I'm saying things changing their names is bad, despite my explicitly saying it's dystopian as it's for an advertisement, then you need to just stop, take a deep breath, and read what I said over again.
When a movie has this excessive marketing for things that make no sense for the movie, it doesn't bode well for the quality. Especially when all they have to do is have a pink and green product and call it wicked themed.
Saw it at the premiere and I will say despite the marketing being weird, the film was phenomenal and a labor of love, made by many of the same people who were responsible for the stage production. I think we need to understand nuance. Marketing team isn’t the same as the creative team
I think it's fun. It's bringing back that monoculture feeling of everyone being excited for the same thing. Though I'm not really a wicked fan or a fan of the colors.
@@Daniel-od9by because it’s well-paced and has some extra stuff. Saw it at the premiere and after seeing it, makes sense to me why they split it. Film isn’t the same as the stage and I think the movie would’ve suffered if they tried cramming it all in one movie
@@crashjambicootoh cool! that makes me actually excited for it! never got to see the musical so i’m totally in the dark about plot. nice username by the way! :)
@@crashjambicootthe "extra stuff" is from the books and I'm skeptical of that bc the musical already fucks the continuity of the book, what more can they really add and keep their toddler-ified kids rating?
It's heavily implied in the musical too, *spoiler* the wizard drugs elphaba's mom with green elixir gets her pregnant with elphaba (the mix of human "the wizard" and ozian "mom" is why elphaba is overpowered) and she comes out green as a side effect of the elixir. When the mom and not-bio dad try for another kid the dad is worried the baby will come out green so he makes the mom drink milk of poppy repeatedly leading to a complicated birth, the death of the mother, and Nessa (the sister) has a birth defect that causes her to not be able to walk and the dad blames elphaba for coming out green and "forcing" him to feed his wife milk of poppy to bleach his child. So yeah it's pretty messed up in the musical as well. (Most of this appears in the first song but all of it appears in the first act, which is what this movie will be so it's an odd choice to name a cocktail for what is essential a DR drug)
It’s truly just products that benefit nobody and that most people wouldn’t even consider if the Wicked branding wasn’t on it. I love merchandise, but if it was my favorite movie getting all these things I wouldn’t buy 99% of it.
It is so wild how they got here from the novel--which has a gut-wrenching, deeply cynical view of humanity and how cruel and selfish and greedy we are. Never ceases to amaze me how america can manage to twist the most anti-consumerist media into the most hyper-consumerist products.
@@Kitsune2Megafan1086From what i've heard it's not there's a lot of unnecessary SA in there, Amanda Todhunter made a pretty good video recapping the books
Calling that drink Oz’s Elixir is WILD bc at least in the books the green elixir is heavily implied to be a date r**e drug iirc. The musical it’s more ambiguous I think it implies the affair is consensual. But the fact that Glinda gets offered the drink when Fiyero leaves her makes it ehhhhh. I feel like that marketing decision did not get a good look in quality control.
Ngl even in the musical it can be viewed as a magical r**fie. More ambiguous, yeah, but if a guy is repeatedly pushing drinks on a lady saying she'll go along with him after she drinks then i am raising some eyebrows
When I saw the musical, the body language of the two actors definitely implied it was at the very least coercion (which was brilliant imo since he's a con man). The concept that Elphaba is a baby born from a wicked deed is kinda paramount, but I suppose the wicked deed could be an affair....but that's really not the implication imo
On Saturday one of our (UK) newspapers had the front cover trying to convince us that "Paddiator"/"Gladdington" (Paddington and Gladiator) should be a thing. Movie makers wanna recreate the Barbenheimer phenomenon so bad, it's embarrassing
Mattel released a press release a couple of months ago saying that they were going to be using AI in helping design packaging. Makes me wonder if the website snafu had something to do with that and nobody bothered to check quality after lol…
I think it's more liekly that marketing or a higher up jumped the gun. Like they simply expected to buy out the wicked domain from whoever currently owned it by throwing money at it and simply slapped the website link on the packaging ahead of time and sent it off for production. Then, oops we can't actually get said address and so it was forgotten that they'd already plastered it onto the dolls. the domain 'wicked' is far more valuable than 'wickedmovie' so it'd make sense they'd try to buy out or work their way into owning that instead of the one they ended up with.
I heard it was straight copy and pasted from what the Wicked marketing team gave them, which honestly doesn't surprise me. I think most marketing company would want to approve things before hand if they were passing off responsibilities, so them screwing up a website makes more sense then Mattel screwing it up. Though I've also heard about the AI thing, so maybe it was used and the AI fecked it up 😂
seeing the wicked roblox "experience" just reminds me of how the original creators of club penguin made the membership to pay for the game because they didnt want to advertise to children and stuck to that until disney bought it out and turned half the parties into ads LOL just kinda crazy how far we've come from that to openly advertising movies to kids in a way that is almost indiscernible from an actual game
Most of the ad Roblox games aren't even fun though, so it's whatever. They're pretty blatantly ads. Of course, I'm not a child, so I don't know what they think. I feel the ones that don't officially partner with Roblox and plaster their ads on the site tend to be more fun.
Don't forget all the Wicked sponsored segments in different shows! SNL had a sponsored skit, the Bachelorette had a themed date, Cupcake Wars had a challenge based on the colors, etc etc. Plus Wicked is going to be a 2 part movie, so this is only the FIRST wave of marketing
As much as I love Wicked, I can't get excited about it simply because I dont believe the characters. All I see is Ariana and Cynthia in costumes. And the sponge. And then I remember their drama and out of touch berating of their fans. Their faces completely take me out of the movie
Wdym?? lol This is what everyone that's not a fan is talking about lol the endless gree and pink. Even Jon Stewart made a joke on his show about how he can't wait for 2025 and not hear about wicked anymore lol Maybe you're referring to people making videos about it? That I haven't seen much
The wicked fandom is mostly theater people and they're obsessed with theme things. It's for them. For the rest of us it's gonna be annoying like Barbie was at some point
The university one was by far the most batshit one imo. A reputable educational institution. A place of academia, prestige, reputation... changing its name for a MOVIE. WHY.
Yeah, I actually like UoG as someone who attends… I love the campus, the small university town vibe, and I enjoy my modules a lot, this year especially (second year) I really didn’t like seeing it just rebrand like it was selling out. Thankfully the actual uni’s “rebrand” wasn’t intrusive, most buildings and sites were untouched on campus itself, but it’s the principle of the thing
im so annoyed by the over consumerism for this, they should’ve just stuck to the brand deals that are already so popular like stanley, starbucks and ariana’s makeup brand.
Respectfully, does anyone know about Ari's makeup brand besides AG fans like let's be SO real right now, does R.E.M. got the same name recognition that Fenty does?
@@2dootDefinitely not. Fenty actually passes as its own thing separate to Rihanna, people who don’t know Rihanna still know Fenty. R.E.M feels like the main selling point is that it is Ariana’s brand, but even then it doesn’t even do a great job at that.
1:20 See, the irony about that... If you've read the book and know the source material, you see why this sanitization is mind boggling. It was mind boggling when they did it to the stage adaptation, it's even more boggling now that the movie is seeming to aim for a LOWER audience.
@highstepnightowl I GENUINELY can't get into this shit because it's like... Knowing a really good song, but they keep playing the Kidz Bop version instead and everyone around you is gaslighting you that the Kidz Bop cover is better than the original. I mean, sure. It's a preference, but it absolutely isn't mine. It's just funny that each iteration gets further and further away from the main point.
@@2doot Exactly! That's the perfect way of putting it. I don't think everything needs a musical in the first place, but dark musicals exist. They didn't have to make the playskool version of it. It feels like someone identified with Glinda when reading the book and just threw away the rest of the plot. I know the author signed off on the stageplay, but his previous royalties were probably running a little dry at that point.
@highstepnightowl Sweeney Todd is HUGE. Les Mis is HUGE. These both deal with very adult, very mature issues. The former even incorporates dark comedy the same way the OG Wicked book does. It's not a matter of whether it can be done; it can. And successfully at that.
Same, like why is there wicked stuff on a random chocolate cake mix, there's no reason, walking into the store and being slapped 8n the face with wicked
That took like, thirty years to build! Why put the Wicked all over it 😔 Edit: I’m hoping at least 1 out of 16 of the people who liked this comment got the reference I was making lol
I know moneys tight for everyone right now, but I'd rather be skint than a walking billboard. I'm English, so laughing at the French is a full-time job, but I'm.still pissed on their behalf they'd use a national landmark for marketing.
My perspective as a cinema worker: I hope I'm not on the rota for Friday. About half of our screens are dedicated to wicked next weekend. Some screening are already sold out. The raspberry ice blast is now green instead of blue. Omg just as I wrote this he mentioned this. We have other things hidden in boxes in the back. No idea what they are. Don't really want to know. The paddington buckets sold out in 2 days, wtf is this gonna be like? Drink cups maybe? Wish me luck. RIP please don't make me hate my job, British public 😊
btw the article that was inventing words like "thrillifying" was doing it as a reference to the musical! they use words like "surreptitially" and "definish" and "swankified" a lot in the show
@@Marta_OuOit's heavily implied in the book that the green elixir is a date rape drug, which was used on elphabas mom. I'm pretty sure the musical also implies this, but a little lighter? a comment here says that it's more ambiguous & to portray the affair as consensual, though i think there was still coercion involved hope this makes sense. i haven't read the book or watched the musical in a long time so i may have got things wrong, this is just what i got from other comments here
Evil Pinly not remembering the story and saying the exact opposite of what the story was about whole point is elfaba isn’t bad just cause she’s green 😂
It's actually so annoying they did this because the color for the musical has always been GREEN. It's about ELPHABA. I honestly hate the recentering of the movie's marketing and I can't help but feel it's about featuring Ariana Grande more, for whatever reason [whether racial or not].
Assuming everything is a colorist issue is insanely fucking headass and it's why Cynthia looks insane for getting pissy over the fanmade poster edit. It's Ariana Grande, she gets attention because she's Ariana Grande, not because she's a white bitch. For a good few years people didn't even know she was white. Just like in interviews. She's not being ignored because she's black; she's just the lesser of the two names. No shit she's going to naturally fall into the shadow of easily one of the most recognizable popstars of this generation. To be clear, I'm not saying YOU think that's the issue, but even mentioning it is dumb when it clearly isn't.
The merch for the original show Wicked was all based on the pink/green colour scheme. Themed snacks and cocktails at the shows were pink and green. It was also a thematic element in the original Wizard of Oz, with Glinda being pink and the Wicked Witch being (obviously) green. I don’t think it has anything to do with either racism or Ariana Grande.
This isn't the first time. The book is centered on Elphaba alone so when the musical was being made, tehy wanted a specific actress so they bulked up Galinda's role in the story to convince her to stay. Galinda is in the book but she's not prominent. She's more akin to a sorority girl you meet in college and years later you find out she's working for Trump
@@TKZells16 *a sorority girl you meet, possibly experimented with, and then found out she's working for Trump. Makes that shit all the more ironic lmfaooo. But perfectly put.

The mayor hall or whoever has the protection of the monuments is more likely to light up thz Tour Eiffel because it's more commercial and easier. 5. I live near Paris, have never heatd of it. 6. Ngl I want a full fledged adaptation of the original novel. Ik it has a lot of problematic stuff in it and violence, but it’s such an insane work, and the Oz lore is too much for my pea brain to handle.
pretty messed up that the cocktail is green and called Oz's elixir as in some versions, the reason why she's green is the potion used to "charm" her mom was green
It’s also brand familiarity, they launched these collabs months before the movie, and you might recognise the name when you go cinema for the holiday weekend and choose that as a safer option
I really want the wicked movie to flop, not because I think it would be bad or I dislike it or anything but because they did so much marketing for it that it would be extremely funny if it did flop
Also I don’t want other franchises to think that this was a good idea and lead to even more extremely unnecessary waste and pollution in the name of marketing
You know, in regards to the Wicked hotel room, if they really wanted to ~send people to Oz~, Oz actually has beautiful scenery, as shown by the "Wizard of Oz" movie?? The cobblestone/yellowbrick road, that field of sleepy flowers, the Emerald City, the forest, etc. Any of those ideas could have made a great Oz-themed room, but noooo, let's just slap the Wicked movie logo on the wall and make everything pink and green, that's much less effort.
Part of me wonders if they're saving the explicitly Oz themed collabs for the second movie. This one seems to be going heavy on just Elphaba and Glinda without mentioning any of the other Wizard of Oz characters (that won't be super relevant until the second act of the musical)
@@delaneyfoy3061then again, it's truly insane to try to avoid spoiling the yellow brick road in a story about the wizard of oz 💀 the spoilers are like a century old
This whole marketing campaign makes me think of how if the movie fails (or even if it just does OK), all of the items that are barely themed are actually gonna be a great deal when they go on sale. Reminds me of when I got a sewing machine themed after a random fashion show that was cancelled for 30% off. Great deal! Capitalism: ... Consumer: 1
8:34 The marketing budget is currently estimated to be at 42.1 million dollars. I think production would be higher because they made EVERY set in real life. They planted a whole field of tulips and even got an actual train and train track for shooting.

I think it’s so damn funny that they got Greenwich to „rebrand“ as Green Witch for a few weeks 😂😂😂 Greenwich was the main place where my English school book played (I’m from Germany) and my 5th grade teacher got furious every time we called Greenwich as Green Witch 😂😂😂 and now it’s the towns real name for a few weeks 😂😂😂
I'm glad that was an universal experience. Here in Brazil, my English teacher (and geography teacher) always got super mad when we called it Green Witch
@@js8qp2pwisos nope. In British English it's /ˈɡɹɪn-/, /-ɪd͡ʒ/ in American it's /ˈɡɹɛnɪt͡ʃ/ Green Witch is pronounced /ɡɹiːn/ /wɪt͡ʃ/ if British, /ɡɹin/ /wɪt͡ʃ/ if American. That's IPA btw. To summarize the differences more plainly: The first vowel sound -ee in Greenwich is always short, never long. The /W/ sound is always silent in Greenwich. British English vocalizes the last consonant -ch as /d͡ʒ/, whereas American English has it in it's unvocalized form /t͡ʃ/ like it is in Witch. (/d͡ʒ/ is the same sound as the g in Magic, whereas /t͡ʃ/ is the same sound as the -ch in chop) American English also has the tendency to make it one syllable instead of two.
I swear that half the marketing is to push parents to bring their kids. Because anyone who saw the musical or read the books know this isnt for kids. Making this PG is such an odd call. Also there's a song about sex in "part 2" I love the Oz universe but clearly it's a blessing that the rest of the books havent been tuned into movies
This is wild because the movie's obviously going to be a hit. They don't need to be that extra with the marketing. it's a movie adaptation of one of the most popular and beloved musical in the world and it has Ariana Grande in it. I'm sure it'll do fine even if it's bad it will still do fine.
I disagree, I don't think the movie will flop but I truly don't think its going to be a smash hit that generations carry on for decades. The drama was too much, the actors are too famous (thus removing any real "characters" from the story, as they will always be seen as Ariana and Cynthia, not Glinda and Elphaba), the marketing is too forceful (aggressive marketing is on a bell curve). Putting ultra famous actors with extremely identifiable faces was a terrible idea. If they put lesser known actors that actually gave the audience a chance to connect with the characters and empathize with them as if they were real, this movie would have become an instant classic. Having mega famous people (with extremely controversial backgrounds) killed any chance of this movie becoming a generational classic.
If it was the word "heretical", then that would be the correct pronunciation of the beginning part, so it's not like it's completely out of this world, it's just an ESL mistake.
At the movie theater I work at we have """"wicked themed"""" gourmet popcorn but it's literally just the caramel popcorn dyed pink and green and it tastes fucking nasty
i don't really care about the wicked movie so with all the marketing shit I've been seeing EVERYWHERE i assumed it was already out. It wasn't until this video that i realized it isn't, yet people are already going insane about it.
As someone whose partner is SUPER into Broadway musicals, they absolutely fucking hate this whole wicked thing. They consider the casting alone an insult to the show because Broadway is all about lesser known stars and their understudys. Casting big name actors with no real relation to the live show soured the water with them day 1. Now, seeing this massive marketing campaign, they are just upset with how much is being put into this when the Broadway version has been there for YEARS.
as a UoG alumnus i would like to share that we got sent emails calling us “GreenWitch alumni” and asking us to post about it on social media lol… i graduated and i couldn’t even escape it 😐😐
this is obviously a very well marketed movie, but the cringe of that University video. The Mac and Cheese yeah im sure its awful but a University changing its name, its utter cringe that they did that. I guess they need to drown out the noise of one of its stars attacking a fan on social media.

Seeing them cast Ariana just because she’s Ariana Grande is enough for me to never watch it. I’m so tired of celebrities just taking spots ppl could’ve worked hard for
that’s exactly how i feel. she’s legit such a terrible person playing a character who’s supposed to be so kind and nice and full of love when she’s legit the opposite. so sad.
Idk man I get it, but Ariana has worked in Broadway before, and had to audition for the role against other well known actresses. I don't like Ariana but it's not a weird choice
I don't mean to be that guy because I fucking HATE AG with a passion, but she was actually rejected for the first audition. I mean obviously they called her back, but she was rejected. She has a past in theatre, as well. Still fucking annoying to see her though lmfao, it's ruined this whole thing for me.
Arianna was not the move imo. This is a movie based on one of the most iconic musicals of all time and a huge chunk of the built in audience will be judging it from that perspective. Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel ARE Glinda and Elphaba for so many people and I really doubt Arianna is going to live up to Chenoweth’s portrayal.
The wicked starbucks drinks are absolutely nasty. Whoever decided to put together mint coffee and matcha is horrific. Also I got 2 ads for wicked while watching this.

12:22 BUT ITS NOT HALF PINK!!! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THE MOVIE IS ABOUT TWO CHARACTERS FROM DIFFERENT WORLDS IF THERE ISNT OBVIOUS COLOR CODING??? CLEARLY THIS IS A FAILURE ON THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT'S BEHALF.
amazing how you cannot tell at all who they're tryna advertise to on one hand you have like kid items like dolls n' crocs, Roblox-etc. then on the OTHER half you have luxury hotels and cars-cocktails, FULL CITY BLOCKS LIKE WHO IS THIS GOING TO APPEAL TO??
Barbie doing this made sense, because essentially the Barbie brand is about consumerism. Wicked doing this is weird. (Also, I guarantee Wicked will not bring back the big Hollywood musical.)
I can't believe the website thing made it past any reviews and got signed off on. I've worked in graphic design and there are always multiple reviews before something goes to production. (at least for big companies like this)

@@highstepnightowlusing ai makes it even crazier that theyre not doing thorough reviews before sending it out. i get using ai to do monotonous stuff like that but people really need to learn quick that you always need a real human to double check its work.
@vlad5042 The box art used to be so creative and intricate, collectors used to collect and set aside the boxes of really basic dolls. Mattel just wanted to decrease their design payroll. As for review and oversight, if a company has already chosen to use AI over talented human designers- they probably aren't bothering to payroll more than a handful of people for that. Those few workers are stretched thin.
The only thing I've been able to think about since the first trailer of this movie was released is that they spent a whole lot of money to make it and promote it, yet Elphaba is wearing freaking Aliexpress glasses

Wicked has been on broadway for 20 years, so even tho the movie hasn't come out, all of these products and experiences are being produced on the assumption the enormous fandom that's existed for these 20 years will be excited and likely purchase these things regardless of how the movie itself is. even if i never see the movie, some of these seem fun
I do admittedly think it's extremely funny how they've reprinted the ORIGINAL NOVEL with pictures from the movie as a cover and placed it in the kids' section of Target. If you've ever read The Wicked Years, you'd know it's not exactly a children's book...more of a political thriller that deals with race/class differences + what measure makes a non-human in terms of the Animals such as Chistery and Dr. Dillamond. Should maybe be for older teenagers.
There’s a video going over it on RUclips. Btw do you know the context about some weird puppet show Elphaba’s dad watches in the beginning? The RUclipsr said she was gonna talk about, but there was a lot of stuff that happened, and she didn’t want to blow up the video.
@WoodwindBuddies it has admittedly been well over 10 years since I last read the book but the Clock of the Time Dragon [as a travelling play] is supposed to be a form of prophecy in the sense that bad things happen to literally every character it satirizes. Also foreshadows major plot events, etc. In the musical it's just there for decoration sadly.
@@hawktalon7890 I watched that video and read a summary of the book on Wikipedia, and I guess it checks out. I’m hoping someone will do a deep dive into the Wicked series, not just the first book. I liked how the RUclipsr used Wicked Barbie dolls (not the ones for this movie since doll Glinda is wearing blue) and a Wizard of Oz Nessarose/Wicked Witch of the East Barbie to illustrate scenes, so I’m hoping she makes more. Btw I think the dolls are beautiful.
i’m convinced that if ariana grande wasn’t part of the main cast, this movie would not be getting nearly as much marketing as it has been. i’m getting phone ads about ai features where the ad is themed after this movie. i have no desire to see this film in my life. i don’t think theater buffs even want this film. they made this for ariana stans and no one else

Not to mention most of the marketing being carried by actual online hype, like the Barbenheimer phenomenon just bc people found it funny they were sharing an opening slot. If the message movie makers got from it is to just overmarket their movies to try and force a cultural moment it's gonna end up biting them in the ass.
And barbie didnt ruin the reputation of a university and put their colours on national monuments!

Oz’s elixir being a cocktail is wild because it’s heavily implied in the book that Oz dateraped Elphaba’s mom by drugging her with his elixir
Holy crap
What the furck
It's heavily implied in the musical too,
*spoiler*
the wizard drugs elphaba's mom with green elixir gets her pregnant with elphaba (the mix of human "the wizard" and ozian "mom" is why elphaba is overpowered) and she comes out green as a side effect of the elixir.
Funny how I completely blacked out on the plot of Wicked except for the Oz date-rapes Elphaba’s mom twist.
All these products for one movie are nothing but a gross display of consumerism.

When I saw the musical, the body language of the two actors definitely implied it was at the very least coercion (which was brilliant imo since he's a con man). Nah, I reckon it was a good old fashioned cock-up. As it were.
This makes me sad

To be clear, I'm not saying YOU think that's the issue, but even mentioning it is dumb when it clearly isn't.

The merch for the original show Wicked was all based on the pink/green colour scheme. Themed snacks and cocktails at the shows were pink and green. I don’t think it has anything to do with either racism or Ariana Grande.

@@Moocow2003 Ohhh that's true, I didn't think about the fact that revealing Oz scenery might be a bit of a spoiler!

Getting wicked on a friday night
Ugh
This whole marketing campaign makes me think of how if the movie fails (or even if it just does OK), all of the items that are barely themed are actually gonna be a great deal when they go on sale. Reminds me of when I got a sewing machine themed after a random fashion show that was cancelled for 30% off. Great deal!

It's cool that they built the sets, especially with the rise of AI.

well, cynthia does sing the riff slightly differently. seems more like a stylistic choice @julianlaresch6266
@marcinattack I've listened to a lot of actors and singers do that part and Cynthia's is awful, it hurt my ears the first time I heard it. I genuinely can't fathom why that's the take they chose. When I tell you this shit has been my Roman Empire ever since the AG × SpongeBob scandal, this whole fucking rollout has been riddled with bad choices and misfortune and I've been happily sitting here with my popcorn watching it all unfold like a beautiful trainwreck.
to me it's the ACTORS and the annoying marketing bad bad bad Choice of actors...
@@Kimberly0KendellI don’t mind the actors. Idk how Cynthia performs (heard she’s good though), Ethan Slader was an awesome SpongeBob, and I just love Ariana’s voice despite her… numerous controversies. Plus she has acting experience behind her, and maybe she’s still got it in her.
However the drama around the film is funny af. Ik it’s not actually funny (because it’s not), but seeing headlines around the lines of “SpongeBob cheats on his wife with Ariana Grande” is just so insane you can’t take it seriously. It got Tom Kenny (VA for cartoon SpongeBob) to clarify that he’s not the one cheating.
It’s probably the second funniest drama surrounding a movie with Rachel Zegler getting cancelled for criticizing an almost 90 year old film in 2020-something for having archaic ideas about women (I’d criticize it more for sidelining and not developing its main character but whatever film was a new thing) and not watching the movie til recently because it scared the bejeezus out of her as a kid.

Wicked already has a dedicated fan base and people who have been curious but unable to see a show will see it + Ariana fans. They don’t need to do so much to reach potential viewers unless the movie sucks for some reason.

@@Walleyedwosaik im so confused is it not pronounced as green-witch?? 😭 thats how ive been saying it for years
@@js8qp2pwisos English is just weird Ngl
@@js8qp2pwisos nope.
In British English it's /ˈɡɹɪn-/, /-ɪd͡ʒ/ in American it's /ˈɡɹɛnɪt͡ʃ/
Green Witch is pronounced /ɡɹiːn/ /wɪt͡ʃ/ if British, /ɡɹin/ /wɪt͡ʃ/ if American.
That's IPA btw. To summarize the differences more plainly:
The first vowel sound -ee in Greenwich is always short, never long.
The /W/ sound is always silent in Greenwich.
British English vocalizes the last consonant -ch as /d͡ʒ/, whereas American English has it in it's unvocalized form /t͡ʃ/ like it is in Witch. (/d͡ʒ/ is the same sound as the g in Magic, whereas /t͡ʃ/ is the same sound as the -ch in chop)
American English also has the tendency to make it one syllable instead of two.

This is wild because the movie's obviously going to be a hit. They don't need to be that extra with the marketing. it's a movie adaptation of one of the most popular and beloved musical in the world and it has Ariana Grande in it. I'm sure it'll do fine even if it's bad it will still do fine.
not to mention that the whole “spongebob cheated on his wife with ariana grande” is marketing enough

A bobby hill of culture I see
As someone whose partner is SUPER into Broadway musicals, they absolutely fucking hate this whole wicked thing. They consider the casting alone an insult to the show because Broadway is all about lesser known stars and their understudys. Casting big name actors with no real relation to the live show soured the water with them day 1. Now, seeing this massive marketing campaign, they are just upset with how much is being put into this when the Broadway version has been there for YEARS.

that’s exactly how i feel. she’s legit such a terrible person playing a character who’s supposed to be so kind and nice and full of love when she’s legit the opposite.

Barbie doing this made sense, because essentially the Barbie brand is about consumerism. Wicked doing this is weird. (Also, I guarantee Wicked will not bring back the big Hollywood musical.)
Cosmo and Wanda have been real quiet since Wicked dropped…
Now I want a version of Wicked with Cosmo and Wanda
I can't believe the website thing made it past any reviews and got signed off on. I've worked in graphic design and there are always multiple reviews before something goes to production. (at least for big companies like this)
Mattel announced they were going to use AI for most of their packaging several months ago. None of the toy collector community were surprised, just more disappointed with each launch.

You missed a plethora of gimicky releases (such as the starbucks tumblrs which are resllelling at $80 - $100) . Cool video I like your take on things.
I bought a few of the wicked OPI polishes recently. the colours are super gorgeous when you're able to look past the wicked branded bottle.
@WoodwindBuddies Yeah, the dolls are surprisingly well made given Mattel toy quality these days.

i’m convinced that if ariana grande wasn’t part of the main cast, this movie would not be getting nearly as much marketing as it has been. i’m getting phone ads about ai features where the ad is themed after this movie. i have no desire to see this film in my life. i don’t think theater buffs even want this film. they made this for ariana stans and no one else
