Ajahn Brahm is 100% correct here. Sam Harris is the epitome of this kind of separation of mindfulness in his materialistic "brain-focused" ideology. Obviously this stems from his background as a neurologist. Kindness and compassion are too important to leave out. 🙏
I finally understand why years ago a monk comments me practising vippasana up to a certain is not enough. I love you Ajahn Brahm, you just pointed out many key things of Buddism to us.
Ajahn Brahm, I hope you are quite well. :) ...[Regarding] Buddhism and secular mindfulness: The coherence of the Triple Gem is evident, and time is a buddhist's friend or even a tool; kamma; [no worries!] [This post has been edited from question to comment.] May all Beings have peace, happiness, liberation.
I use mindfulness based therapy in work. It is adapted for each and every person and includes encouraging a person to not harm themselves or others. It is effective to some degree but relies on the practice of the the service user. Much like older cbt methods. We use mindfulness with compassion. (ps it may be that mindfulness in psychology has begun to include more than just controlling the mind for a moment).
Wonderful video! Regarding the first part, I think the situation in Myanmar is seriously eroding the reputation of Buddhism for many people so maybe it's good mindfulness isn't tightly bound up in it.. Perhaps what needs to happen is the rest of the Eightfold Path being similarly taught to a wide audience without emphasising its Buddhist heritage.
Why should the Rohingya issue erode Buddhism, in the first place? Its burmese politics, not Buddhadhamma, that is to blame. But when ISIS and wahabbis cause trouble, its not ok to attribute their unholy 'inspiration' to their Quran. This is a blatant double standard on the part of the west.
I'm sorry to say this but I disagree with Ajahn Brahm on the mindfulness topic. Everything in life is like a knife, you can use it doing good or doing bad. If we taught people, children how to simply stop for a bit and be mindful in the moment, the world would definitely be a better place. And apart from that, I didn't come across many mean people using mindfulness as a tool to act evil, so let's not loose proportion here.
Buddha found mindfullness as one of the eightfold path to gain enlightment. But recently people (and scientist) claiming that brainfullness is as same as mindfullness and could let us to gain enlightment.
A note about RUclips advertising. I realise it can be difficult to control who advertises on your videos. However, when I watched the video an advertisement for a military video game called Guns of Glory was shown. It would be a good idea to check the advertising settings for this channel as it can seem hypocritical when talking about Buddhist ideas yet earning money from ideas that are in direct opposition to the Buddha's teaching. I'm not entirely sure how it works, but you may have to contact RUclips and request certain adverts are not showing on your channel. With Metta
Jean Vandepoele i see your point, however the bigger picture would have you realising that funds from ‘whatever’ advertising directly benefits the WA Buddhist society, and you can skip the majority of adverts anyway.
youtube's ad analytics are based on your search history and previous interests, so each advertisement is garnered to your personal interest. Or rather, what they think you'd be interested in.
I think this monk should be happy that mindfulness is now a mainstream thing. Conscious awareness of the body has been a part of yoga practices since before the time of the Buddha, the Buddha himself learned this techniques from other established teachers of the time. Zen Buddhism uses mindful concentration and nothing else as its practice, (no metta, karuna, abidharma or philpsophical mambo jambo). The Theravadan approach cannot appeal to every person, and trying to own mindfulness as exclusive to Buddhism, or the Theravadan tradition is, to me, only a display of the deep delusion permeating the collective ego of some buddhist circles. Quite frankly, it seems spiritually childish to complain about mindfulness not being attributed to one sect.
No, buddhism is about happiness, and mindfulness is a tool used in buddhism, buddhism knows all about mindfulness, it is mindfulness, for the west and these new scientists to come out and only talk about mindfulness doesn't make any sense. Mindfulness isnt nearly as useful without the other teachings. Mindfulness by itself is not nearly enough to eradicate suffering.
If you put out the three Brahmaviharas, you obviously dont know what dhamma is for then. You obviously dont know what keeps beings in samsara. You obviously just got into the 'meditation' (fake meditation that is, not bhavana) clique to escape problems, and not to escape samsara. Idiot
Your wisdom has helped me so much in my life. Thank you Ajahn Brahm, I would love to meet you one day.
That is very wise. If you do any sort of act, good or bad, there is always someone watching: You!
Very nice. It was very nice to meet Ajahn Brahm in London a few months ago. He is very warm and welcoming.

Awakening to oneness was thinking the same thing about Sam Harris.

Some people use buddish teaching for money,so sad this is happening

Carlos Martin I think Ajhan Brahm's positive approach is far better than your negetive approach . Try listening more to him. Thanks

how about The platform Sutra? seminal mahayana/zen text
