      Patrick was always dumb and caused a lot of problems, but after season 3 it became worse with each season.
      It then became so bad that Patrick now actively hurts people in the must brutal ways.
      The same happened with Spongebob.
      Spongebob was always naive and often unaware of things.

    Don’t get me wrong, there are some modern episodes that weren’t terrible, but I still think the franchise should have ended when it did. If anything, the show runners should make episodes that answer questions that people have been having ever sense the show first aired.

    The idea of having the episode be about Patrick trying to get SpongeBob's memory back sounds like it would make for a better story. In fact, here's my idea for this episode so that it could be good. It's about Patrick forgetting that it's his Friendaversary with SpongeBob. In his haste, he randomly grabs a rock for a gift, but accidentally gives SpongeBob amnesia when he trips on it. He goes to Sandy for help, and she tells him to bring him around town to all his favorite places to jog his memory while she tries to make a helmet to restore his memory. It seems to go well until Patrick accidentally breaks the helmet. He feels bad about this, and these strong feelings jog SpongeBob's memories back. It's a broad strokes idea, but it's something with potential.

    The problem with modern shows and media is that they don't offer a solution nor an antidote to the problems. They just portray the problems thinking that today's depressed generation will relate, and that relating to being depressed will be enough. It isn't. Sure, people should be able to relate to characters, but when there's no inspirational message to those dark mental states, then what's the point? This is one of many reasons why today's generation is the most depressed. The popular media being spouted these days teaches us that it's okay to be a "victim" or that it's okay to accept your flaws, but it never offers a real solution. That isn't a healthy message, and it's just one of many reasons why today's cartoons are failures. They fail to tap into or connect with the wider human condition.

    Yeah, this could have been better executed. I like the idea, and it could have been a good one in my eyes if Squidward was being a dick. And it doesn’t feel like that difficult of a problem to solve writing wise. Maybe have the episode remind Squidward of the good times his relationship with SpongeBob has given him. Snowball Effect and Band Geeks are particularly good examples. Instead of depicting Squidward as a normal guy have him treat SpongeBob extremely poorly (SpongeBob gets him a really nice and thoughtful gift that doesn’t hurt him and he throws it away and insults him). Then have the episode call Squidward out for the way he treats the only person who actually considers him a friend! Hell, they’ve done this exact same plot before (Dying For Pie), but at least it could give room for a happy ending, where Squidward finally admits that he’s sorry for how he treated SpongeBob, but also reminding SpongeBob that he has boundaries that SpongeBob should be more respectful of. Overall, it could end up with the two having a healthier relationship in a way that calls out both characters for their actions, but I guess SpongeBob writers just think haha Squidward gets hurt and SpongeBob gets away with everything.

    It’s clear that the writers care about the old seasons and how it was so popular they were, but they just have no idea how to replicate what made season 1-3 so good in the first place. Only thinking that if they reference old stuff their episodes will automatically become good. Which isn’t the case at all
    The way I see it is that you can reference stuff from your show, but only use it sparingly. And to also have there be a joke around it. What makes the episode so bad isn’t mostly the story, but how they decided to handle it. Only putting in the references just for the sake of the viewer saying “OMG I REMEMBER THAT OMG!” Which is just bad writing. And also never getting the viewer the chance to breath without shoving 15 references to the show.

    Somewhere along the way, the show decided to actually torture Squidward and relish in its sadism. There were points where this trope was funny but after awhile it just got really bad and generally mean spirited. It made Squidward, the cynical, pretentious, and egotistical jerk, and his problems go from being considered petty to genuinely concerning and problematic. In fact, Spongebob and Patrick became more selfish and inconsiderate than he was and would do things that would upset anyone if they were in his position. In other words, when the show's protagonists become more unlikeable, annoying, and antagonistic to a supporting character that serves as the foil, you know you got a problem.

    My least favorite plot lines of Spongebob episodes are the "Squidward get tortured for no reason" episodes. And omg the past few seasons has A LOT of them. You do make a good point in the video, if Squidward is happy, Spongebob and/or Patrick WILL ruin it. The formula CAN work, however it has to be done in a specific way to where he does something bad to where he gets his Karma in the end. Even then it's like a mid-tier episode on average, but being tortured for no reason is a trash tier episode. At his point in the series, nostalgia bait is used so often to where it no longer feels special anymore, unless it actually has plot relevance and makes sense with the origin of the reference. If it has none of that, the nostalgia clip is just me thinking to myself "oh yeah... anyways."
    I will also say that there are some good gems in Season 13, Flower Pot being ones of my personal favorites from the season, along with the Salty Sponge actually treating an old school reference with respect and above average humor, at least compared to the rest of the season.

    i personally think that people saying "spongebob is back" is an annoying exaggeration because the real story is that, it's been another 3-4 seasons, so there's another style change in the writing and animation. while yes, i have enjoyed some season 13 episodes like dopey dick and spatula of the heavens, it still falls prone to the word i use to define seasons 9-12: mediocre. it's not bad, but it has nothing i would rather watch over the first 8 seasons. although each of those seasons have at least 3 episodes i particularly like and enjoy, they feel lackluster compared to seasons 1-8.
    and yes, that does mean that i enjoy seasons 6-8 more than 9+. in my experience, i've laughed more at those seasons in spite of the largest concentration of bad episodes than at the average season 9+ episode. while season 9+ is certainly not bad, it's missing a lot in the comedy department and i can only say "i watch spongebob for the plot" so many times. but i digress, because there are still some hidden gems in that era, which is why i refuse to call any season of spongebob outright bad.

    - Goofy Scoopers
    - The Big Bad Bubble Bass
    - Squidferatu
    - Salty Sponge
    - Ain't That the Tooth
    You probably wouldn't like Something Narwhal This Way Comes or Upturn Girls though because they basically try to make Kmap Koral canon to the main series.

    • @Pablo.673
      @Pablo.673 Год назад +3

      Kamp Koral isn't canon to the main series. SpongeBob went to that camp as a kid but not everything shown in Kamp Koral and Sponge On the Run happened.
      Kitchen Sponge explains this.

    • @Pablo.673
      @Pablo.673 Год назад +2

      Squidferatu isn't very well received even though it's really good.
      Goofy Scoopers is good but one of the worst of S13 in all honesty lmao. Same goes for The Big Bad Bubble Bass but it is better than Goofy Scoopers for sure.
      Last two episodes you mentioned are amazing but I actually think Friendiversary is better than Ain't That the Tooth.

      Honestly I feel like a lot of the later episodes rely too heavily on fanservice and nostalgia bait, and it just feels pandering. I found it more cringeworthy than anything when the show decided to directly reference Nostalgia Critic, and it's a reference that'll likely become dated in 20 years.
      A lot of the old (good) SpongeBob episodes are timeless. These ones consistently feel a lot more contemporary. That's not getting into the "lul random" style of humor the show has adopted... honestly I just wish the show could end already.

    I don't know about anyone else but I feel annoyed that nowadays it's okay for Spongebob to make references to previous episodes despite how the first 9.5 seasons they weren't allowed to break the hard episodic rule. For example they weren't allowed to reference Mr.Krabs ever being romantically interested in Mrs.Puff but now it's part of the continuity.

    SpongeBob should have had the original “story book” ending they had planned, with the first movie being the grand finale, and a worthy and triumphant send-off. There are some episodes here and there that came out after the movie that are okay. But okay is as good as they get. Everything that came before the movie is solid pure gold though. If those were the only episodes we knew, we’d have a much higher respect for this show.

It's possible Season 13 maybe is a lot better than I'm giving it credit for, but I haven't seen enough about it to really judge that and the little I have seen makes me feel the opposite.

    I can't bring myself to watch every episode of the series, either. I've seen the vast majority of them, but I've reached my breaking point a while ago, in that I can no longer bear to endure continuing my viewership into the modern era any longer. One or two episodes were such horrendous bastardizations of a show that means so much to me that I was genuinely brought to tears and had to turn it off. 1st world problems, I know. But my point is that goes to demonstrate just how depressingly meager this show has become compared to the glowing golden years of the first 4 or so seasons. Everything after that has been mostly painful to watch; I only watched as much as I did to build my encyclopedic memory of the episodes in affirmation of my status as an avid fan of the show. RIP, the Spongebob I once knew and loved. And as for his evil successor, fuck the little psychopathic moron.
