@@Silent43192 ikr i saw some kid saying old spongebob was bad and new spongebob was better because the saturation and the expressions are knocked up to infinity
I feel like part of the reason for all of the over the top expressions is because the creators noticed how popular spongebob memes were and are now actively trying to force weird faces to make memes with but idk that's just a theory.
I really hope the current people working on spongebob actually want to listen to us og fans and change it. Kinda wanna relive the old moments of spongebob but also wanna see newer episodes. Sad that Stephen Hillenburg had to leave us in a young age. This was the saddest moment to me...
Above all it has been all about the characters. Season one we met then and they were likeable and fit well. Second and third season they came into their own and fit even better. Post spongebob movie, they started to devolve. Season four and five were good for the characters but they still couldn’t hold a candle to the previous seasons. Then we found reason after reason to genuinely hate each charecter to were they became unrecognizable today
I agree that the show wasn’t as good after the movie, but that’s just my opinion. I will always hold the SpongeBob movie and the seasons before in my heart. Maybe I’m too old for it now, but I can’t even stand to watch the newer seasons.
It's sad to see how Spongebob changed over the years from having heart and soul put into it with carefully crafted writing to just being a zany compilation of gags revolving around a simple plot. The show used to be able to have something for all age groups with kids laughing with Spongebob and Patrick, adults relating to Squidward, and teens getting a little bit of both. Now it's just to distract the kids with a gatling gun of gags and everyone reacting so excessively to everything that even an eccentric anime character would look unexpressive.
*insert meme of Neptune creating tons of burgers with magic to wow everyone, only for even him admitting they taste awful, vs Spongebob taking his time to prepare a single Krabby Patty with the love it deserves, a single burger that won Neptune's heart
This perfectly articulates my problems with the modern version. The og show had a charm to it, the jokes memorable, the animation eye pleasing, the characters and their interactions. The modern version unfortunately is so much easier for me to change the channel. The characters are flat and jerks to each other, and there’s nothing funny with them being mean to one another for a gag. This was a cool video and it was great for a small channel!
I really despise modern SpongeBob. It’s even worse than midseason SpongeBob which at least somewhat try to be their own identity. Gotta admit, I think that midseason phase (6-7) is not nearly as bad as people say, especially when compared to modern Spongebob.
Yea I don't hear kids even talking about it as much they should have let the show go if kids just were gonna ruin it cause their parents couldn't be bothered to actually put on a decent cartoon but instead give them a damn tablet I swear I hate that parenting tactic
I'm glad that I'm not the only one feels it, the fact that the new SpongeBob is so different than the first 4 seasons is just makes my heart broken. Thank you for making this video, this cartoon made me survive during this quarantine situation. New sub here broo, u deserve it 👍
Ikr. Seeing those random unfunny facial expressions of spongebob or patrick in the new SpongeBob version every 5 seconds kinda makes me frustrated....like why. I cant even watch them lol. I just have to go back to old episodes. sigh
Good point dude. I guess the they forced so much Over the top expression was because they wanted this show's new episodes to be memed again just like the glorious old ones. However as we all usually know, Forcing your own Show to be a meme constantly won't work...
Yeah there was so much gagging in the show as e show went on. About season 4 was when it changed. The modern spongebob today is just horrible. I used to like it but it got super boring.
Yes!! Finally, someone agrees with me. You described golden era Spongebob perfectly. These new seasons seem like a parody of the original show. As if the Ren & Stimpy writers got their hands on Spongebob and just went nuts with the gags and animation. Great video
It's great to see someone finally shining the light on modern SpongeBob. I see too many people on RUclips claiming that it is an improvement from the season 6-8 era when clearly it's not. One of the things they cite is that this era feels more like a classic season than those mid-seasons when in reality, it is the exact opposite. It feels nothing like the early seasons, the writing, pacing, humor, characters and storyline are all off and feels like something from LT instead of SpongeBob.
Same!! I couldn’t get enough. The moment I realized it was time to turn off spongebob was when they made him speak all proper and in complete sentences it felt like they were turning into a toddler show
Finally someone calling out seasons 9-12. I feel like not enough people do this because it’s just kind of an improvement on seasons 5-9a and people want to believe the show is getting better when it honestly isn’t.
I will say that modern SpongeBob is an improvement over Seasons 6-8 but not by much. Here's how I feel about SpongeBob overall. Seasons 1-3+First Movie: I absolutely adore it. So many hilarious jokes, wonderfully written characters and a great mix of character moments/studies and surrealist elements. Season 4 is enjoyable but you can tell something isn't right with the show. I begin to notice SpongeBob being more flanderized from an adult with child like qualities into an annoying moron who cries over stupid shit. I don't care for Season 5 but I wouldn't call it bad. There are some good episodes but unfortunately, they're outweighed by the duds and even most of the good episodes aren't that good. Any issues I have with Season 4 is accelerated to a concerning extent. Seasons 6-8 are fucking horrible with the latter being the worst of the show. Out of all 144 episodes from this era. Only 23 episodes I would consider good and like Season 5, most of them are not that good. I feel like it's mean-spiritedly bad. So many episodes that don't feel like a slice of life kids show and would fit perfectly in a fucked up horror movie or in Adult Party Cartoon. Episodes like The Splinter, One Coarse Meal, A Pal for Gary and Are You Happy Now? just prove that point. Seasons 9-12 aren't as dreadful as 6-8 but I still hate it and consider it awful. I feel like the show just tries way too hard to get a cheap laugh out of the audience and sacrificing coherent plots that made the older episodes funny. Honestly, I hate the narrative that people in the cartoon community like Phantomstrider and Mr. Enter push out that SpongeBob has gotten better again because it's just not true. It's just stupid, retarded comedy for one. Secondly, I'd actually go as far as to say that it's an insult to people who grew up with SpongeBob such as myself. The new writers must think that these people will like anything when it comes to SpongeBob and have next to no critical thinking skills. Why have a coherent plot and put in actual fucking effort to be funny and engaging from start to finish when you can just cram in a bunch of dumbass gags that are completely unrelated to the plot and have no substance whatsoever am I right. I think anyone who loves Modern SpongeBob has absolutely terrible taste and are in such denial. You might as well say "I'm an idiot who has no good taste and I wouldn't know good taste even if it hit me in the face". These idiots don't want to accept the reality that SpongeBob is absolutely horrible as a show now. As long as we don't have another One Coarse Meal than these people will think of these modern episodes as the second coming. What I'm saying is that the bar is set so fucking low that SpongeBob and friends just making cringe faces for the whole episode would be enjoyable enough for them because hey, it's not A Pal for Gary all over again. I would forgive all of this if the episodes were consistently funny but unfortunately most of them are painfully unfunny and there's basically no effort in any way. In other words, it's nonsense for the sake of nonsense.
@@KingYou2002 "I hate the narrative that people in the cartoon community like Phantomstrider and Mr. Enter push out that SpongeBob has gotten better again because it's just not true" Oh, hate others opinions huh?
Old spongebob had such a weird vibe going for it that just made it feel like an empty nautical gift shop vibe. It's neat to watch and study because even in hyper moments it's shockingly chill.
Genuinely true stuff this guys saying. I learnt a lot about life watching spongebob as a kid. It was a very clever show with seriously high class humour which would force you to learn undertones of comedy which you would usually get in sit coms or even films made for adults/teenagers. Nowadays man it’s forced. The writers need to slow the pace right back and turn up the intelligence of the show as this is what made it a diamond.
It always bothered me how the more the series went on, the less the writers seemed to care that the show was supposed to be underwater and only have nautical equivalents to land-based stuff. Now it just seems like things just are what they would be, at least a bit further than you could suspend disbelief for it.
I feel like the line delivery is one of the reasons that early spongebob was so good. It was never over emotional and the emotions felt real instead of over the top lines, now this isn’t a knock to the voice actors, it’s the producers for making them do this
Cel Animation: animators are able to draw the character length just with another paper put on top of the previous one Digital animation (Early season 2-3): the animation changes a lot due to the drawing on computer Do you see that as well
Season 1: YOO THIS IS GOOD! Season 2: GOD DAMN THAT'S GOOD! Season 3: ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Season 4: Not as good, but still good. Season 5: A bit worse, but still had memorable episodes. Season 6: Ok, this is terrible. Season 7: This is REALLY BAD WTF Season 8: A bit better, but still bad. Season 9A: Ok, an improvement... Season 9B: Yes, we're back, baby! Season 10: A bit bumpy but still good. Season 11: So many great episodes, but something feels off... Season 12: I don't even... it's not bad, it's just... Season 13: CAN SOMEONE CANCEL THIS SHOW PLEASE???!!
This is exactly what I’ve been saying!!! I stopped watching it somewhere in season 6. There are only 2 episodes I like in S6 cuz it really went down hill after season 5.
To me, seasons 1-4 and the movie were brilliant, seasons 5-6 were a mix of good bad and terrible, seasons 7-8 is when the decline really started and seasons 9-12 is just garbage.
1-10 and the 2 1st movies with the birthday blowout is the best to me. 11 and 12 and the 3rd movie and Kamp koral series is garbage but here is my timeline Old timeline: Season 1 Season 2 Season 3 Season 4 The spongebob squarepants movie out of water Season 5 (birthday blowout being after s5 e6 and before e7 and the stop motion halloween and Christmas episodes being close to the end of the season) The spongebob squarepants movie(it was supposed to be the series finale) Main timeline: Season 1 Season 2 Season 3 Season 4 Season 5 Season 6(the 2 movie being after) Season 7 Season 8 Season 9 Season 10(with birthday blowout) The spongebob squarepants movie New and trash timeline: Kamp Koral The Patrick star show Help wanted(cause it the start of spongebob story in general even in this one) Season 11 Season 12 Spongebob squarepants movie sponge on the run(as the series finale to this universe And yeah
patrick smart pants is probably my favorite spongebob episode it was realy good,it put the friendship of sponge in pat in a situation that we were never use to
I actually don't think the expressions of the current seasons are due to "because kids" but moreso that the storyboard artists just enjoy doing it, so they do it a lot.
I couldn't quite put my finger on what made the new animation style so jarring, but you're completely right. The frequency of the hyper-exaggerated facial expressions is way, way too much. It feels like a saturated, minimalist caricature of the original show. It's gross and kinda shocking like a mix between Ren & Stimpy and Adventure time. The first time I saw modern SpongeBob it genuinely stressed me out
I remember this episode where they exaggerated Spongebob's face and it genuinely creeped me out. Like. I had to stop watching it because it was... horror creepy. When you have characters whose face stretches to have giant growl-like teeth one second and then the next second they turn into totally different creatures with weird body autonomy, it's hard to know what to take literally and not to take literally. But that's the thing though, if taken literally you had physically mutilated characters and it was like some horror experiment gone wrong, disguised as a kid's show... in a kid's show.... for children. It just made me very uncomfortable. (I jumped into a random modern episode from season 1-7 I think)
I agree with you, Seasons 1-3 were the best, by the time it reached Seasons 6-8, it went downhill, and starting on Season 4, SpongeBob's voice changes and hasn't changed until now.
@@jaxsterminator8634 Seasons 6-8 are not underrated seasons. They are over-hated seasons. I know they are some stinkers and a clear step down from season 5 but there are gems in there which are worth watching. These seasons in my opinion are much better than the ones that follow; i.e; seasons 9B-13.
Wer're all here watching this rn. Why? because it was a part of our lives. Memes reflecting moments in a show that was almost edgy but intelligent quirky and funny with brilliant writing. The older generation's 20s and 30s are keeping this show's legend alive with an appreciation of the original seasons as kids. I don't watch past season 4 really... I agree with OP RIP OG SPONGE
The main problem with modern SpongeBob vs classic SpongeBob is that classic SpongeBob would play a joke for a scene, but give you time to process what just happened. The show gives you a couple seconds or a minute to laugh at what you just saw. Modern SpongeBob just places gag after gag with little to no time to understand what just happened, and that i feel like is a massive problem not just in terms of writing, but in terms of kids watching it will probably grow up with severe ADHD from over exposure to this style of comedy.
Saw a clip of this vid on TikTok and had to check it out. Great work! I can't believe that you don't have more subscribers, this was a really awesome video!
100% agree. I love SpongeBob, but Nickelodeon let the shows success cloud their judgments, all greedy. During SpongeBob’s “peek years”, 1999-2004, there were a plethora of different cartoons and shows. SpongeBob was just one of MANY great cartoons on the network. Now, besides a few hits like Avatar, Nick doesn’t really try innovate with their cartoons anymore. SpongeBob is the “face” of Nick, when back then; SpongeBob was just one of many great shows that represented the channel. If SpongeBob ended In 04’ like Hillenburg wanted, I bet there would be a much diverse lineup on Nick today, than now. Yes, we’ve grown up, and are not the target audience anymore, but if todays SpongeBob aired in 99’, I doubt it would have become so big, if at all.
I remember when Nick had kids vote on their favorite SpongeBob episodes, and a lot of them were from earlier seasons, which surprised me. Examples, Sailor Mouth, The Conch Shell, and Hooks.
It is not the writers fault, Nikoledeon's target audience has just gotten younger and until Nikoledeon realises that older people still watch cartoons the show will continue to plummet in quality
I stopped watching spongebob after i outgrew it as i'm sure many people did. Then as a teenager i decided to just kinda see how the new episodes were and i couldnt watch through it, it was cringey and stupid and i just cut off the TV. I dont think Stephen Hillenburg would be very happy tbh
when I started watching the new SpongeBob and didn't liked it as much as before, I thought at first it was because I only found it funny when I was a kid, but then I watched the older episodes such as seasons 1-3 it made me laughed my ass off and I remembered how much I enjoyed it as a child, I guess the old SpongeBob will never be replaceable.
Flanderization is definitely a big issue with the newest seasons (which I personally enjoy, though not as much as the first 5 seasons). Nowadays, the Krusty Krab is always the #1 restaurant in town, despite it having many slow periods in the original seasons. Patrick is nearly always stupid in the latest seasons, despite him having good ideas in the past, like helping SpongeBob almost pass his driving test via a hidden walkie-talkie and a telescope. SpongeBob was once an adult with kid-like tendencies; now he's a kid who happens to live alone and work a full-time job. Squidward used to have moments where he was good at the clarinet; nowadays he can barely sustain a note. Sandy's job as a scientist is now the most notable thing about her character, despite it only showing up once in the first season. When's the last time Sandy and SpongeBob went to the beach, or duked it out in a karate spar? When do SpongeBob and Patrick go jellyfishing any more? Why are there barely any episodes that neither show nor mention the Krusty Krab anymore? Why is the "my leg" gag now entirely associated with Fred? Who knows.
Seasons 1-3 and the first movie were golden. Seasons 4-5 were decent. Then the seasons after that were terrible with only a few good episodes like suction cup symphony and enchanted tiki dreams
@@digimonlover1632 I like Season 9b, its the peak of modern spongebob. I think the quality went back down at season 12. Also, season 9 didn't have the wacky faces and stuff like that.
Season 1 is the best season IMO I really liked the more storytelling aspect of the plots, the funny moments and how well tehy all bounced off one another. Honestly if I had to rank the seasons, 1. Season 1 2. Season 2 3. Season 3 4. Season 9 5. Season 4 6. Season 5 --Bad era-- 7. Season 6 8. Season 8 9. Season 7 10. Season 11 11. Season 10 12. Season 13 13. Season 14 14. Season 12

Am I the only one l that sees that SpongeBob's design has become less warm and welcoming and a bit more brash and cocky? The way he acts now he's in a constant cheeky smirk that's almost pompous, and its almost like he intentionally annoys Squidward, Sandy Cheeks and Mr Krabs. Though this look was more common from seasons 6 to 9. When it comes from seasons 10 to present, he's just sterilized. SpongeBob used to have a cute, perky, happy, naive and wholesome Sponge just trying to get by in a world of wacky yet down to earth situations, and his annoyance is usually unintended and he means well...
yeah but season 1-3 spongebob’s annoyance was really charming to the point where you can’t even be mad at all with him. afterwards it became too overboard and annoying.
I, like many others, feel as though the newer seasons have been getting better as of late. We're getting less and less squidward torture, the characters are feeling less flanderized, its chipper tone is returning. It may not be pre movie spongebob, but it's starting to feel like spongebob again more and more.
@@cordyceps7531 Yes, but now it's becoming more in line with the classic Squidward Karma Trips of the old days, where Squidward is tortured because he actually deserves it like in Sportz?, Chatterbox Gary, New Digs, or Under the Small Top; in those episodes he is either being an insincere ass or a self entitled jerk who either causes the problem, makes the problem worse, or tries to get others hurt for his own amusement.
@@1fishmob in Sportz SB and Patrick ruined his garden so far as I’m concerned Squidward deserved to get them back. There’s also Ink Lemonade and Squidward’s Sick Daze that go out of their way to mess with him for no reason. I could probably name more examples if I’d seen more of seasons 11 and 12.
@@cordyceps7531 1. In Sportz, does Spongebob and Patrick being martyred for Squidward's own pleasure and the town's enjoyment for a few broken lawn ornament really justify Squidward physically injuring them to the point Patrick is LITERALLY decapitated? Sick Daze and Ink Lemonade are also just exceptions.
Great to hear an actual educated vid on this. The transition to over the top frenetic children’s shows began in the late first decade of the 2000s. Most earlier children-teen shows were much slower paced and focused on wholesome storytelling. I grew up through this generation, and it always stings to see what some of my favorite shows have become.
Though I will say, when there is a good modern episode, it’s usually a REALLY GOOD episode. Ex: it’s a spongebob christmas, hello bikini bottom, SpongeBob’s big birthday blowout, etc. Ik all the ones I’ve mentioned are specials, but there are some good ones in there. Though unfortunately, same can be said for the bad episodes…….. *Ink Lemonade flashbacks…*
I feel like the characters lost a lot of relatability when the show got into the later seasons. I could see the struggle in SpongeBob wanting his drivers license, his pure glee while flipping Krabby patties, him just talking to sandy, Patrick, Squidward, etc. It felt like watching like a middle age person who still found joy in the little things who just so happened to be a sponge. Now SpongeBob feels like a cartoons character. I know he IS one, but when he talks, all I hear is someone reading from a script, not a real character.
This is exactly how I feel about Spongebob. You perfectly summarized my biggest issues with the new seasons and what was so good about the old seasons.
I feel like I'm in the minority now when it comes to my thoughts on modern spongebob. I still find Seasons 6 & 7 to be the worst seasons of the show (I don't absolutely despise them, but I don't think they're good either). Season 8 is meh, it had some great episodes but it still had some pretty big problems. Seasons 9-11 though, I don't care what anyone says to me, I still really like these seasons (well mainly 9 and 11). I respect everyone's opinion if you do think Seasons 9 and beyond are bad though. Also if you're asking why I'm not including 12 in the mix, I've seen only 2 episodes from this season, I'll get around to watching all of it at some point though.
It's kinda refreshing seeing someone praise the modern seasons without being too assertive like "YoU jUsT hAtE iT bEcAuSe YoU'rE a BoOmEr!!!111" or "sTfU mOdErN sPoNgEbOb Is GoOd!!11" I actually like Seasons 9-11 except that Ink Lemonade shit. Made me get Splinters episode vibe.
Season 6 had like one good episode throughout the entire season being sand castles in the sand, which is surprising considering season 6 is filled with so much garbage like squids visit, boating buddies, THE SPLINTER, cephalopod lodge, choir boys, etc… It’s literally the one good episode of a season of absolute trash

💪 well spoken
This perfectly articulates my problems with the modern version. The og show had a charm to it, the jokes memorable, the animation eye pleasing, the characters and their interactions. The modern version unfortunately is so much easier for me to change the channel. The characters are flat and jerks to each other, and there’s nothing funny with them being mean to one another for a gag. This was a cool video and it was great for a small channel!

Nickelodeon when Stephen hillenburg died be like lets go trash this dead man's masterpiece and go against his wishes

@Evan Johnson what?
Who knows.

It may not be pre movie spongebob, but it's starting to feel like spongebob again more and more.
Squidward still gets tortured in these new seasons, mercilessly
@@cordyceps7531 Yes, but now it's becoming more in line with the classic Squidward Karma Trips of the old days, where Squidward is tortured because he actually deserves it like in Sportz?, Chatterbox Gary, New Digs, or Under the Small Top; in those episodes he is either being an insincere ass or a self entitled jerk who either causes the problem, makes the problem worse, or tries to get others hurt for his own amusement.

Also, you should make a video of why Boruto sucks compared to Naruto/shippuden 😯
The washed out colours of the early seasons actually gives the illusion of the show being underwater!
Made me get Splinters episode vibe.
did you ever watch the broadway musical of spongebob?
Season 6 had like one good episode throughout the entire season being sand castles in the sand, which is surprising considering season 6 is filled with so much garbage like squids visit, boating buddies, THE SPLINTER, cephalopod lodge, choir boys, etc…
It’s literally the one good episode of a season of absolute trash
@@ninjafrog6966 krabby road, chum bucket supreme, Kristen krushers and not normal are some good episodes that came out of season six. Not defending it tho it still sucks as a whole
i love your video.
honestly everything you've said in the video is what i feel and what i think everythime i watch modern spongebob episodes

Also btw can u make the degradation of no mans sky? And then the rise of it?
@@angelrod7689 I’ll definitely add it to my list of ideas
@@angelrod7689 hey man. I haven’t actually played no mans, so I don’t think I’ll get to it. However you’ve given me the idea to do this with other topics: gaming, other shows, etc. really appreciate the suggestion!
I remember watching the actual premier for the first Spongebob episode in 99' on my parents giant box TV that weighed more than a small car...Those were the days
They've adjusted SpongeBob to account for tiktok attention span brainrot.
Loving the videos so far, just wish they were a bit longer. You pretty take the words out of my mouth in this video with how I feel about SpongeBob
Spongebob in now in days is not bad I really like both modern and old spongebob but I kinda see what you mean about the expression
The old seasons will forever be the goat of Spongebob. The new seasons don't even come nearly as close
Old SpongeBob was actually good, normal animation but New SpongeBob is dynamic... A little too dynamic. It feels like im watching Gear 5 fighting Rob Lucci
