  • New Hampshire Backcountry Nordic Skiing To An Off-Grid Cabin. Fischer S Bound OTX 112
    Alright, welcome to winter in the mountains of New England. We just got a huge snow storm totalling 41 inches in some areas and 2 feet of fresh powder where we went. A perfect opportunity to get out on our Fischer S-Bound OTX 112 backcountry nordic skis (the best xc ski for beginners or experts looking to explore off trail.) and head up to one of many rustic off grid cabins in New Hampshire. There's nothing quite like the buoyant feeling these skis create while breaking your own trail in fresh pow, while floating through a silent wilderness. In the winter we "Live To Ski" as Fischer puts it. The dusks golden sunlight stayed just within reach, illuminating our path and highlighting the moose fresh tracks that seemed to have the same destination we did. A day spent in the woods of New England usually consists of finding some interesting old structures or artifacts from early settlers and the logging history of the region. As two people that used to put in upwards of 100 days on snowboards per season, learning to descend on a free heel ski can be quite amusing and also part to the fun. A new challenge is always welcomed and the intimate, wild places these skis take us has muted the beckoning call of a busy ski resort while the voice of nature has become beautifully clear.
    This is our first real go at a Nordic Ski episode and posed a new set of challenges in itself. The pace is much slower than the running or biking, for one thing but that's also the allure of the backcountry. It's patient and tranquil. I tried to capture a mix of emotions and add in some upbeat music to keep it lively. But I'm thinking of trying one with no music and letting you all hear the relaxing sounds of the skis gliding along, the forest ambience, and maybe very little speaking. My goal with these Nordic videos is for you to have a submersive experience but to also inspire you to get out and explore on skis or just go out in the winter woods. Let me know in the comments what you'd like to feel from these winter backcountry videos. We plan to be out filming quite often and have some amazing places to take you.
    Thanks For Watching

      Being a runner I think you would love Nordic. Similar experience to trail running and is an awesome crossover for building up your running muscles and endurance. We've both noticed a lot of benefits especially a nice clean stride and running uphill for longer mountain runs. Perfect for getting you up Pierce and Eisenhower😉 . Two of our favorites btw. I hope you get to go run soon enough but runs after an unplanned rest day can be some of the best. Thanks for watching

      We are just as excited as you are Seth. Stoked for your new setup! That's going to be an unstoppable combination for whatever winter brings to the Nor'East. We'll be doing some tours in Vermont and Maine this year in additiin to New Hampshire. Going to start checking off sections of the Catamount Trail especially after riding sections of it in our latest bikepacking series. Vermont has some of the best snow quality in the country so you're in a great place to enjoy on those skis. Cheers to the snow falling soon!

      Ha ha that's a fair observation. Nikki has renauds syndrome so her hands get brutally cold at times and that was actually what you were seeing there so she was looking forward to stopping for a hot beverage at the top. As long as she has her carbs handy she can go for days like on our bikepacking or running trips. I've never seen her bonk energy wise but the hands thing is something we've learned to navigate with warmers, multiple glove choices, and hot drinks seem to really help her and putting her cold hands in my warm arm pits...hopefully for her sake, I'm wearing deodorant that day ha ha. Thanks for commenting and watching.

    I backcountry in upstate NY, we have gotten some great snow also!! I went with an AT set up for my backcountry set up. Madshus annum and another pair of madshus eon, both with dynafit speed turn bindings that can lock in my atomic backland boots. As a lifer downhill skier, I wanted the ability to ski the way I know how on steeper downhills. Sometimes locking down like a downhill set up has saved my butt as well as put a big smile on my face!

    • @ThatMountainMoment
      @ThatMountainMoment  3 года назад

      Backland is a great boot and dynafit is a proven reliable performer for sure. I came from ski race and snowboard background and there are definitely times where locking the heel down is a "butt saver" for sure ha ha. The setup we have is definitely more favoring the touring efficiency over the steeper downhill control. It feels like ice skating even in 2ft. of snow. A very buoyant gliding sensation. Your setup sounds awesome! I have a lot of experience with those products from my years in the ski shop industry and the backland was a hit as soon as it came out. Im not as familiar with Madshus though. Stoked you're getting some snow. What part of upstate?

    Interested to hear your impression of that ski and binding combo in less than ideal snow conditions.
    Great trip!

    • @ThatMountainMoment
      @ThatMountainMoment  3 года назад +2

      Yes! Ha ha, we just started to learn the art of the Tele turn. Really fun movement. So to describe these skis in various conditions it would go something like this: powder or even a fresh inch fallen on hardpack they are blissful and feel very docile and right in thier element. They buoyantly break trail and keep you right on top. A feeling hard to describe unless it's felt firsthand because of how frictionless and light they actually glide along in deep stuff. Get them on firmer groomer type conditions and they hold thier own very well albeit less efficiently than a traditional or skate ski but still fun and make for a great day they don't track quite as straight due to the sidecut wanting to engage a turn where a straight ski would be superior still. Super firm bordering icy and the metal edges dig in well on off-camber sidehilling but when flat they are constantly searching for guidance from you to keep them on a straight heading and the extra width at that point can feel clunky and unnecessary. I will say, as with any gear you just learn to adjust yourself to the gear but yeah on firm days we woukd suggest just heading to a Nordic center and go skate or traditional or just skip it and watch movies at home in pajamas😉. There's always a proper tool for the job I suppose. They bust through crust really well too. The added stability from the width is noticeable. In just about any scenario. Your question inspired us to put together a review video very soon, thanks for that and for watching. What else would you like to know?

    • @ThatMountainMoment
      @ThatMountainMoment  3 года назад +2

      I would say where you can gain the biggest upgrade in control is going to a stiffer boot like an Alfa Skarvets full leather or Alpina's backcountry offering. These boots from fischer are mega comfortable out of the box and a really great lightweight touring boot that definitely prioritize the tour over descending control but still do okay. Great for all day exploring of the wilderness but not something to be making quick adjusting turns in tight situations if the speed picks way up heading down. We'll have some more videos of many different situations once the snow starts falling again. Lost a lot with the rainfall recently.

      Just got these skis. Would it be stupid to mount a NNN binding/boot combo to this? I have the Alpina 1550 NNN BC boot and wanted to try this, as I feel a 3 pin is overkill for what I want to do with this set up, as I won’t being doing much downhill. Great video!

    • @ThatMountainMoment
      @ThatMountainMoment  3 года назад +1

      Hi Seth, We use the NNN Magnum BC bindings on these and they're Awesome. Actually what fischer suggests for them. We've had zero issues with them. The BCs are Very sturdy laterally due to the wider profile of them. I would say the biggest upgrade for control with an NNN is a stiffer boot from Alpina or Alfa Skarvets. We prioritize the touring over the descents so the nnn/fischer touring boots make a very light and efficient setup and very comfortable out of the box compared to a 3 pin setup. We also like to unclip and walk around if we are camping or setting up in an area so the nnn boots are nice for that too. Thanks for the question and for watching. Please feel free to ask more questions, happy to help if I can.

    The Fischer S-bounds are the best bush skis i have tried. When I see people on skinny ski's I just want to slap them to make them see the light! I ski in northern Ontario. I have the Easy skins but the Otx have fantastic grip without them.

    • @ThatMountainMoment
      @ThatMountainMoment  3 года назад

      They really are in a class of thier own! We would never go any narrower after owning these. They feel capable just about anywhere and you're so right about the otx having lots of grip. With a good pair of poles with powder baskets to help uphill the easyskins are almost not necessary until it gets extremely steep. Glad you love them so much. How's the snow in Ontario this winter?

      Those are interesting. Like having two snowboards on your feet ha ha. You know...fischer does make the s_bound 125s 😉. I've thought about getting a pair and putting an Alpine Touring setup on them. It would be a super efficient hardboot setup with more control on steeper descents. I've not heard of people trying this yet. What boot are you using with your 112s?

    • @TapioBlue
      @TapioBlue 3 года назад

      @@ThatMountainMoment I have the same boot/binding as you do, BCX 6 and BC NNN. I tried a pair of OAC KAR 147's but not crazy about them. Too slow, not enough float and tips dig in. My wife uses them and really likes them though. I have a pair of Rossignal 125's which do float a bit better than the Fischer 112's but their waxless base has very lousy grip. They turn way better though, even with the same boots. I get long skis for float and spanning over narrow gaps and sketchy ice.

    • @ThatMountainMoment
      @ThatMountainMoment  3 года назад

      Oh nice, the versatility of the 112s is beyond anything else out there I feel. I might try a stiffer boot next season but still really happy with the fischer boot as far as comfort and touring efficiency. It's well broken in now and more flimsy than it used to be but I've adapted to it's softer feel. Alfa Skarvets full leather looks sweet but seems to be a rough break in period and less fitting of all foot types.

      The skis are Fischer S-Bound OTX 112s. Boots are Fischer OTX Backcountry. Bindings are Rotefella Magnum BC nnn style. Very happy with this combo. I would say with that thus setup leans more towards faviring the touring vs the downhill but still very fun going down. It's a lightweight and efficient setup for li g days of exploring while breaking trail. Extremely buoyant in very deep snow. If you want to prioritize the descent I would upgrade to a stiffer boot like Alpine or Alfa but you gain some weight and efficiency loss while gaining more responsive turning control. Very durable setup that is hassle free and reliable when you're way out in all types of conditions. Could not be happier with how these perform. Please feel free to ask further questions about them. We're planning a review video so any questions are welcome.

    Awesome places! What are the best bindings setup for touring? nnn bc or 3pin?

    • @ThatMountainMoment
      @ThatMountainMoment  2 года назад +1

      I feel that it's definately a personal preference thiugh I've found that the nnn bc is less finicky in conditions where snow is deep as far as clicking into them is concerned but aside from that, as long as you have a boot with good lateral support both setups are very similar in how they perform. Working in a ski shop for many years, I've come to realize that the performance of any combination starts with the boot. If the boot fits properly, is warm, and offers good stiffness without being overly brutal to break in, the rest of the setup is complimentary to the overall experience. I personally love the nnn and have no reason to give them up. They are very rugged, simple, versatile, and they dont squeak like I've seen some 3 pins do in the past. Hope that helps.

      Yes this has definitely been a lower snow year for new England. Where we were is somewhat of a snowbelt about a half hour south of our home in Lincoln. We only got 8 inches at home and this place got over 2ft. The logging roads are the hidden gems of the winter for sure. What setup do you use for your ski tours?
