  • Deep powder snow, warm crackling fire, surrounded by the mountains...ahhhhhh. The moon rose full and bright and cast moving tree shadows on the blanket of pure white snow as it travelled in the starry sky. It was for sure a beautiful silent night in the peaks without another soul around for miles.

Thankful you enjoyed it & thanks so much for the kind comment! Winter is incredible, the way the snow silences everything is so peaceful and how it blankets and turns the forests & mountains into a white canvas is awesome. And to be on the fun sticks exploring through beautiful landscapes & carving turns…nothing better! All the best for 2023! 🏔🎿⛺️

Hi Jessica, thanks for your kind comment and for watching the films!
Backcountry Winter Camping Tips (do at your own risk, be careful out there)
-2 mats to sleep on, one air and one foam if possible, warmer and than have backup if air mat gets a leak
-good quality down filled sleeping bag rated for cold winter camping temperatures
-headlamp with new batteries & a spare headlamp & spare batteries
-gloves/mitts of varying thicknesses & materials, I like about 5-6 pairs so digits don’t get too cold and prevent damage to nerves and/or get frostbite, insulated leather gloves work great for blocking wind and tending fires or handling hot items, gloves/mitts with removable liners dry out easier
-down jacket, waterproof shell, light shell, thermals (merino wool works great as breathes well and doesn’t hold odours), beleclava, toques of varying thickness, waterproof & breathable pants with side zips
-fire starter in case need to build fire in emergency
-insulated sleeve for Nalgene bottles and boil water prior to going to bed than store inside Nalgene bottle in insulated sleeve and tuck in sleeping bag to keep yourself warmer
      -bearspray year round, could come
in handy if bear decides to wake up from hibernation or for cougars, etc
-utility knife and tools for your gear to fix it if need be and get back to your vehicle
-not sure what type of activity your doing but highly recommend Avalanche Safety Training (AST) Level 1 course as minimum, many people without training get themselves into avalanche terrain/situations without realizing it, go with experienced people
-I carry Garmin InReach mini which enables me to text via my cell phone via satellites, has SOS button, can text just with device if need be for help etc. Would come in handy if need rescue.
-down booties for camp with bit of grip on bottom, be careful as can be slippery (camping on mountain slope), I put foot or hand warmers in booties to keep my feet warm overnight in sleeping bag
-tramp down snow with boots than with ski’s or snowshoes to make nice firm level spot for tent
-put reflective ground/survival tarp inside tent to keep mats and gear dry and reflect some body heat
-leave trip plan with reliable person
-wood sticks work great for tent guy wires to bury in snow and pack down
-dig pit in vestibule which makes easier to get boots on/off just be careful when exiting/entering tent to remember pit is there as I’ve heard stories of people getting injuries due to pit in vestibule
-keep electronics warm (near body) as batteries don’t last long in cold
      -thermos with tea
-not sure if any allergies but I like having coffee, chocolate, nuts, dried mangos, cheese, food that won’t freeze and high energy as burn lots of calories in cold
      -bring extra food/clothes just in-case
-when setting tent if in forest have good look around that no dead trees or snags that could come down on your potential tent/camp spot
-good sunglasses to protect your eyes and goggles with 2 lenses (one for sunny and one for flat light), goggles very good to protect eyes if gets windy with snowstorm etc
      -don’t go solo if possible
-cook/eat outside your tent or animals may come looking for food and rip into your tent and store food and toothpaste, brush & floss & anything smelly somewhere else where animals can’t get to it
That’s all I can think of right now, hope that helps and hope you enjoy a safe winter camp trip. For sure it’s beautiful out in creation, just respect it as it’s a powerful humbling place. All the best!

    • @airoutthere
      @airoutthere  Год назад +1

Hi Dan! Thanks for watching another film & the encouragement again! That’s a tough question regarding favourite piece of kit as all pieces are equally important and useful in their own way. I think for winter camping having a solid sleeping bag is key. My bag is down, compacts well & lightweight. Also having enough insulation underneath the sleeping bag is important to prevent snow or cold ground from sapping one’s heat. I double up hiking air pads in the winter which works well. You can buy winter rated pads that are very thick but I’m trying to use what I have for now. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
